[Bug 927515] Re: Thunderbird stuck at 100% CPU

2013-03-21 Thread Andrew Frank
i experience the same probelms - very annoying on an old computer with little
cpu power. i use
Release 12.04 (precise) 32-bit
Kernel Linux 3.2.0-39-generic-pae
GNOME 3.4.2

the high cpu is regularly after starting tb and goes on for quite a while (15
minutes +), it seems related to IMAP synchronization in a quite large mail
account.
closing teh message pane did not reduce the cpu load.

please fix!
thank you - andrew

libreoffice is installed should produce a descriptive error message and not
appear to work!

[Bug 697580] [NEW] after rotation screen is cropped/shifted

2011-01-05 Thread Andrew Frank
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

if i use xrandr -o right (or rotation the screen with the gnome monitor
tool) the contents are shifted up (the width is ok, it shows the
reformated applets band at the bottom of my screen). it seems that the
full screen is there - i can move windows which are partially shown down
and use them. at the bottom is a black band - about the height of what
is missing on top.

i have produced a xorg.conf and have added
Section Monitor
#af
Identifier Configured Monitor
EndSection

Section Device
# addition af
Identifier Configured Video Device
Option RandRRotation On
EndSection

rotation of stylus input works (great job!) and on the rotated screen is
seemingly correct (i.e. about an inch lower than the button i want to
hit - reflecting the shifting of the display).

perhaps connected: this is a new install of ubuntu 10.10. it did
recognize the wacom serial stylus input automatically but did not allwow
the xrandr to work.

thank you for the progress with xorg for tablets!

[Bug 697580] Re: after rotation screen is cropped/shifted

2011-01-05 Thread Andrew Frank
the bug is related to compiz - if i switch the display effects of (in
system-pref-appearances-visual effects NONE ) the rotation works
perfect.

remaining questions: why is
Section Device
# addition af
 Identifier Configured Video Device
 Option RandRRotation On
EndSection

not automatically produced? and why does compiz introduce a shift?
hope this helps!

[Bug 551790] Re: lucid update-grub wrong root=UUID=

2010-12-30 Thread Andrew Frank
i have a fresh install of 10.10 - with all updates, but i see exactly
the same behaviour. other partitions with ubuntu (say 10.04) are
correctly found, but the UUID for the root is set to the one grub-update
is run for (or the one, the installation is made for). this makes it
impossible to run with the previous installation.

any workaround? - any fix?

[Bug 458453] Re: beam.smp uses lots of CPU on desktopcouch contacts lookup

2010-12-29 Thread Andrew Frank
i just installed 10.10 - and it seems unusable. intermittently beam.smp comes
up and the system is completely unresponsiv. cpu load is not visibly high, but
interaction is essentially stopped.
gui behaviour is changed - clicking does result in 'attached document to
pointer' (with +, means copying?),

it seems a serious problem - in the sense that it is a SHOW STOPPER for
anybody installing a fresh system (possibly having a large collection of
contacts or many files on ubuntu one, which is my case)

[Bug 507837] Re: Desktop Effects prevents any window from stretching across dual monitors

2010-08-27 Thread Andrew Frank
even if there are technical reasons for the feature - it needs to
be fixed such that the user action (resizing the window with the mouse)
is carried out without requiring a special command when it goes beyond
the screen. i have seen new graphics cards which allow 6 monitors!
anybody having used two monitors when coding will not go back and the
current feature is in the way of flexible use. i have turned
compiz off, but not everybody will be willing to do this.

[Bug 619192] Re: sync is slow, no current transfers

2010-08-24 Thread Andrew Frank
i am surprised that
- ubuntu one is not usable - it does not sync files as advertised
- bug reports seem not to draw attention to problems; this bug report was filed
a week ago and not even looked at

i am frustrated. i was planning to use ubuntu one and go for a paid
subscription; i will look now for alternatives. winning customers back
is harder than capturing them initially! ubuntu one had an advantage,
coming with ubuntu.

advertising and offering a service that does not deliver is bad
publicity!

[Bug 623247] Re: xrand -o right gives badmatch opcode 149 on intel

2010-08-24 Thread Andrew Frank
the problem is partially resolved:
i used in xorg.conf a vesa driver.
since i have installed workaround b from
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes. now rotation and external
monitor works, as recommended for the 855 chipset. the remaining problem is
that the external monitor is very unstable.

i guess this bug can be closed.

[Bug 619192] [NEW] sync is slow, no current transfers

2010-08-17 Thread Andrew Frank
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntuone-client

i want to sync the files i currently work on (about a total of 100 MB. i
have a fast line (8Mb/sec) - but sync does not completely sync all files
in reasonable time. if i look at currnt transfers, i see 0 (despite the
fact that sync is typically 3 weeks !! behind.

i attach the log files zipped.

it would be a great tool - but i needs to be fast and reliable, so one
can forget about it!

[Bug 562437] [NEW] cannot set priner driver in GUI in last step (no forward button)

2010-04-13 Thread Andrew Frank
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cups

i try to set the printer driver for a new printer (kyocera fs-1050d). i
select from the list the printer and then select the driver. independent
of which driver i select, i am asked a question if i want to merge with
previous driver detail or not. independent of the answer i do not get a
'forward' button to select. thus the process is aborted and no printer
set.

this is a regression bug (it worked in earlier version)

related bug (i can report as separate bug if desired): if the printer is found
with 'search for network printer' then the printer driver is set to raw local;
this is not good, because it does not allow (for example) to print two pages
facing on one sheet.
(this is a new bug - because the search for network printers did not work in
the past for me)

i like lucid... few small bugs to iron out! good work!

[Bug 557923] Re: calibration utility is missing for touchscreen

2010-04-12 Thread Andrew Frank
the touchscreen is handled correctly but the calibration package needs
to be included and fixed to understand where to find the touchscreen -
it uses HAL and must be changed (i am sure that other input devices
needed to be changed from HAL to the new system). where is a descriptiv
document on the replacement of HAL? i would then fix the
touchscreen_calibration.sh - i have looked at the code before and
improved/fixed it before. for this i need an understanding what replaces
HAL.

[Bug 557906] Re: lucid - keyring is not unlocked automatically, no option to set

2010-04-12 Thread Andrew Frank
i think nothing should be automatically unsecure or secure (i understand that
some defaults are necessary and i do not see a point in discussing what
defaults should be), but the user should have the options to set his level of
security as he sees fit.
thus:
automatic login does what it says: it logs the desired user in when the
computer starts. this is currently working well.

what is not possible at the moment (at least i have not managed to
achieve it): that one of the keyrings is automatically unlocked when i
am logged in. at the moment there is a connection between how i was
logged in (automatic or not) and the automatic unlocking of a keyring.
this connection, which is not transparent to the user and not
controllable by the user is what is the issue.

suggestion: keyring should honor what the interface says 'unlock this
keyring whenever i am logged in' (no tacit assumption how the login
happened). a blank password is not the option - the point is not
avoiding to type but avoiding to be asked, which means processes (e.g.
the network connection, and thus mail download) do not start
automatically unattended.

at the moment i see a bug in the difference between the keyring interface text
and the behavior. i suggest to modify the behavior.
the result will be that users can decide how secure their systems should be and
how often they should be asked for passwords.

[Bug 561548] [NEW] WARNING: at /build/buildd/linux-2.6.32/kernel/softirq.c:143 local_bh_enable_ip+0x61/0x90()

2010-04-12 Thread Andrew Frank
Public bug reported:

i did switch the /home partition (i.e. changed fstab). i had copied the
.dot files to the new home partition, but there might be some remnants
from 9.10.

i also saw when i was starting that it said 'resume : libgcrypto version 1.4.4'
and then was a long wait.
the system started normal and seems to work normal.
i will try to restart

[Bug 560171] Re: suspend does not switch off computer (lucid beta)

2010-04-11 Thread Andrew Frank
i marked this as 'not a regression' bug, but when i checked, i found that it
did not occur in kernel 2.6.31-21 which i was using with 9.10. it is a
regression error. suspend did work correctly before. i hope this helps!

[Bug 549997] Re: VPNC connection consistently fails to connect (no shared secrets)

2010-04-11 Thread Andrew Frank
i run lucid and encounter behavior that seems similar as described above. the
error message is consistently 'no valid VPN secrets' (the passwords are saved
in the setup. they are correct and work with a 9.04 ubuntu) -- i seem to
remember a similar bug earlier in 9.10.
this is a regression bug!

[Bug 461158] Re: Link to Quirk-Checker script broken

2010-04-10 Thread Andrew Frank
could somebody provide something similar to the quirk-checker script for the
new setup (for lucid) without HAL? it was useful...
i, for one, have a problem with suspend and hibernate and would like to fix
it... quirk-checker helped with this!

i have sent in bug reports, but being able to do something oneself and
not burden others is nice!

thank you
andrew

2010-04-10 Thread Andrew Frank
Public bug reported:

when i want to suspend then the operations seem to work, but at the end
(the screen is black) the computer does not switch off. there is no way
to resume, other than forcing to switch off (long press on powerbutton).
what can i do to help fix this problem?

thank you!

work!).
how can i get rid of the 'resume' message? i expect it originates in a 'not
yet' satisfied error to resume from when i shut down forcefully.

any suggestions? i run a fujitsu siemens p1630 with a duo core.

[Bug 557923] Re: calibration utility is missing for touchscreen

2010-04-09 Thread Andrew Frank
in karmic: the calibrate_touchscreen.sh is a link to
../lib/xf86-input-evtouch/calibrate.sh
the code there cannot be executed, because
Could not initialise connection to hald.
Normally this means the HAL daemon (hald) is not running or not ready.

and it produces a nice error message

No evtouch capable device found, if you are sure you have
an evtouch capable touchscreen, please mail the resulting file of the command
lshal evtouch_hal.out to the
bug url https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/317094, so support for your device can
be added.

i hope this helps in tacking down the problem, which is crucial for
lucid to support touchscreen devices!

thank you
andrew

[Bug 557894] [NEW] hibernate does not shut off computer

2010-04-08 Thread Andrew Frank
Public bug reported:

the command hibernate (from menu) seems to execute properly, but fails
to switch of the computer at the end. there is a black screen after some
disk activity, but the power light stays on. i need to manually switch
off (power switch long depressed). later ubuntu starts normal (not from
hibernation).

problem existed already under karmic (but sometimes ok), with lucid it
seems always to be the case.

[Bug 557906] [NEW] lucid - keyring is not unlocked automatically, no option to set

2010-04-08 Thread Andrew Frank
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: seahorse

under lucid (and automatic login swtiched off) the default keyring is
not opened automatically - as a consquence, networking is not enabled. i

please fix also that it opens automatically when autologin is on!

why is keyring management under application and not under system

[Bug 557574] [NEW] install lucid sd car - no kernel support for mmc device?

2010-04-07 Thread Andrew Frank
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: live-initramfs

i installed lucid (beta 1) from a usb stick on a sd (mmc) card. the
installation went ok and seemingly used the latest files (connecting thru
network fine). the resulting system did not start, because the sd card was not
found (it should be /dev/sdb).
it seems that the installatin system does not detect that i was installing on
an sd card and did not produce the initramfs with the correct settings (i think
that sdhc sdhci_pci mmc_block).
can this be fixed (or at least a warning produced with some instruction how to
proceed)
thank you - i look forward to test further!

[Bug 459928] [NEW] display manager does not allow to switch a display on if screens are mirrored

2009-10-24 Thread Andrew Frank
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

the method to select a screen and then to switch it on or off (or to change
resolution) is based on clicking on the corresponding screen in dht display in
the applet. this is not intuitive and could perhaps needs a sentence of
explanation in the GUI.
the bug however is, that when one ticks the 'mirror screen' on then the two
displays are shown as one and it is not possible to select one or the other
from the gui. this is a bug in the gui that needs a fix (eg add a drop down
list to select one or the other display, or similar).

thank you for a fine GUI!

i have not seen it happen again - so it seems to be solved (but not the

[Bug 456356] [NEW] enable wireless is not available in pop up on network applet

2009-10-20 Thread Andrew Frank
Public bug reported:

the network applet pop up menu does contain the 'enable wieless' choice, but it
is not availble to be ticked on (grayed out).
this happens after the network was switched off and is not switched on again
(hardware).
there is no othe place to enable wireless - thus this is necessary.

[Bug 415903] Re: [FUJITSU SIEMENS LIFEBOOK E7010] suspend/resume failure

2009-10-16 Thread Andrew Frank
i am not certain, but i appears that the problem occurs when i close the
lid and the cpu goes seemingly to sleep and later i take the computer
out of the backpack and it is on. but in a state that is frozen (nothing
on visible desktop moves, no pointer, no reactions to input)

[Bug 442553] Re: evtoch calibration does not consistently work

2009-10-11 Thread Andrew Frank
i just installed the new distribution - the behaviour has not changed
substantially:
1. calibration is lost with every restart
2. calibration is after restart mapping any touch to the lower left corner
(opening trash)
- after recalibratin it is off (calibration shows 400/400 as min values
only after the second recalibration (which shows 400/1400 for min values) the
calibration is precise.
then it works --- till the next restart or even a hibernate/rewake makes it
loose calibration.

thanks for your attention

[Bug 447195] [NEW] cups system-config-printer no place to indicate paper size

2009-10-09 Thread Andrew Frank
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cups

i installed a new printer (Kyocera FS-1030) and did not see an
oppoertunity to set the paper size. the printer driver uses letter
(because my language is set to us-english) but i am located in austria
and use a4. (it is dangerous to derive too much from user prefered
language). in one of the tabs for printer option i should have the
possibility to set paper to a4 and this should then become the defaul.

[Bug 442553] Re: evtoch calibration does not consistently work

2009-10-09 Thread Andrew Frank
after another dist upgrade (fri oct 9 - i got seemingly only part of the
upgrade and ubuntu crashed in the process - compiz. report send) i found:
twice i had to do the calibration twice in a row. the first time, minx and miny
(the figure top left) is 4xx/4xx and remains in the 400 range for both (this is
wrong for myscreen, it should be 400/1400). after calibration, the cursor is
somewhere ...
when i do calibration immediately afterwards again, then it starts with
2000/2000 and goes quickly to 400/1400 range figures. then the calibration is
good after restarting the xserver with ctrl-alt-bcksp.

this is confusing and i hope you can fix it.

[Bug 446101] [NEW] sound produces 'static' for alerts

2009-10-08 Thread Andrew Frank
Public bug reported:

karmic (up-to-date) produces a loud noise (static) whenever an alert is issued
(probably - it is happening frequently, for example in a terminal hitting
backspace when at the left end of line - i.e. trying to backspace over left
margin)
the sound cannot be muted and is independent of the setting in the loudness.

(sound otherwise - e.g. youtube - works ok)

very annoying noise!
thanks for attention!

[Bug 446123] [NEW] evtouch calibrrtation fails with multiple monitors

2009-10-08 Thread Andrew Frank
Public bug reported:

i observe that touchscreen calibration produces a reasonable (but still
wrong minY) value config file, but when this file is used then a small
area of the touchscreen is mapped to the second screen. another small
area is mapped to the touchscreen itself. it is obviously a serious
miscalculation occuring when two monitors (not mirrored) are used . i
guess that the total envelop of the two screens is mapped to the
touchscreen area - and then only the two small areas are actually
controlling the cursor in a visible window. when i had a single monitor
configuration, it worked.

expected behavious: the touchscreen controls the cursor on the
touchscreen only - to go to the other screen a mouse is required.
principle for touchscreens: the cursor is under the touch...

thank you for fixing

[Bug 446246] [NEW] printing two files in a row makes wait for 'getting printer info'

2009-10-08 Thread Andrew Frank
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

when printing the first file prints immediately (without that printer status is
checked).
when printing a second file while the first is still printing then the printer
status is checked and users have to wait till they can click to print the
second file. this is different than in jaunty.

[Bug 442553] Re: evtoch calibration does not consistently work

2009-10-07 Thread Andrew Frank
afer some experimentation i found that touchscreen calibration sets the
value minY wrongly - it uses a value similar to minX, but it should be
different (in my case minX is 449 and minY is 1384.

i checked the code of the calibrate_touchscreen, but i cannot understand
the logic. where is some documentation found?
