[Bug 195822] [NEW] Hardy hdparm does not honour power management options, leading to premature disk failure
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: hdparm I have parallel installs of Gutsy Hardy on my laptop, and some time ago read about the load cycle count problem and how to stop the rapid increase in load cycles by disabling power management via hdparm. I immediately configured hdparm.conf and installed smartmon-tools to watch the count, and it seemed to slow the increase. At that point I was on approximately 130,000 cycles on a 6 month old hard disk. In recent months I've been using the Hardy Heron alpha, and on installation I configured hdparm and smartmon-tools in the same fashion as with Gutsy. I recently happened to check the count, and noticed to my alarm that my disk is now over 170,000 load cycles (disk failure becomes increasingly likely around 200,000 cycles). I immediately checked my hdparm.conf etc, noted everything was correct and then ran hdparm from the command line as follows: sudo hdparm -B 255 -S 240 /dev/hda (-B) setting the APM setting to 255, thereby disabling APM on the drive altogether (-S) setting spindown_time to 240 (i.e. after only spin down after 20 mins of inactivity I then ran: smartctl -a /dev/hda | grep Load_Cycle_Count to watch the counter. In spite of the hdparm command I'd given, load cycles continued to accumulate at the rate of several per minute (I could hear the drive quietly clunking each time). I can not continue to use Hardy until this problem is rectified. ** Affects: hdparm (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: disk hardy -- Hardy hdparm does not honour power management options, leading to premature disk failure https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/195822 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Just in case some here aren't aware, ndiswrapper is a 100% reliable replacement for the native rt61 driver. [Bug 92761] Re: resolv.conf overwritten no matter what I do
Exactly the same problem here. Network Manager (or one of its helpers) seems to assume that the DHCP server is *always* a DNS caching server (i.e. that it will accept DNS queries on 53/UDP 53/TCP, look up the results and return the resolved IP address to a client). This is by no means the case and is broken behaviour! The router in the Net Cafe where I work (a fairly common NetGear DG824M) does not have a built in DNS server, but issues its upstream DNS servers to DHCP clients. Network Manager (or one of its helpers) blindly ignores these and instead puts 192.168.1.1 (my router's IP) into /etc/resolv.conf. Meanwhile, Windows Mac wireless users connect effortlessly, whilst I have to edit /etc/resolv.conf each time I am allocated an IP address via DHCP. This is a serious problem - especially for those who roam networks - and it is still a problem on the most recent version of Gutsy as at today. The reason that there aren't more people reporting it is because most routers *do* act as DNS caching servers, but not all of them do and furthermore in some configurations this is not the desired configuration. Also, prepending DNS servers sounds like a horrible kludge which would get especially messy with roaming networks, requiring modifications each time one connected to a new roamed network (not to mention it probably incurs performance degradation in name resolution). We need Network Manager (or helpers) to do what the DHCP server tells it to which means to use the DNS server(s) it is given, and nothing else. -- resolv.conf overwritten no matter what I do https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/92761 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 92761] Re: resolv.conf overwritten no matter what I do
Please ignore my last comment in its entirety. I have just checked again and my laptop *is* getting the correct nameservers from the router's DHCP configuration. It is *not* over-riding this and trying to use the router itself as a resolver. Network Manager does take a little while to handshake, etc so perhaps this is why I thought it wasn't working. Public bug reported: Using Dapper, Edgy, Feisty and Gutsy on 2 almost identical Toshiba notebooks, I've found that almost without fail my computers' sound will stop working completely at some point during my sessions. This causes MPD (music player daemon) and any other multimedia applications to hang, although in general the computer is still responsive for non-media applications. I then have to reboot (or suspend, when I have working ACPI support, which I don't at present as I'm using Gutsy) the computer to restore sound capability. The most common precipitating factor seems to be receiving a message via Gaim/Pidgin whilst the sound card is already busy playing an MP3 or otherwise in use. It does not happen *every* time I receive a message, but 9 times out of 10 when the sound dies, it is coincident with receiving an IM. As mentioned above, I have 2 almost identical Toshiba laptops (Portege 3480CT 3490CT), and have now confirmed that the problem occurs with both of them. Although it could be a hardware fault specific to these models, I think it unlikely and have been unable to find any reports of this happening on Windows. I've just started a Gutsy Netboot install on my other laptop, which is a very similar Toshiba Portege 3490CT and from the start the text mode installer ran at an appalling speed; when the screen was cleared and a new page displayed the update could be seen proceeding line by line. Adding acpi=off to the netboot kernel parameters fixed the performance, but of course disabled ACPI support. This is not ideal as Suspend and several other power-related features do not work with APM support out of box, but have worked with ACPI on Feisty and earlier releases. ** Summary changed: - [gutsy] Gutsy performance lagging dramatically + [gutsy] Gutsy performance lags dramatically with ACPI enabled -- [gutsy] Gutsy performance lags dramatically with ACPI enabled https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/138423 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 138423] [gutsy] Gutsy performance lagging dramatically
Public bug reported: I have been running Ubuntu on my Toshiba Portege 3480CT since Dapper days, without problems. I am currently dual-booting Feisty and Gutsy on the laptop, and Feisty has no problems. Although the machine is used as a desktop, I use server mode install, and add my preferred packages for X.org, Xdm, E17, Abiword, Epiphany, Gnumeric etc afterwards. However, following a recent apt-get upgrade, I experienced extreme slowness in booting, and performance in general. Thinking this might be related to some cruft on the / partition I reformatted it and performed a fresh server install of Ubuntu Gutsy, but the problem persisted exactly as before. I do not use locate/updatedb and even an hour after the machine has booted the problem persists. 'top' does not show any process(es) using significant CPU time. I thought it was connected with laptop-mode-tools, because multiple laptop_mode processes were showing up in the 'top' process list, using more CPU than I thought they should have been. However I've now upgraded to ubuntu_laptop_mode and performance is still very slow, especially in X.org - moving a basic GTK application window (such as GMPC) around the screen takes CPU to 100% and screen refresh lags terribly. For example, the Epiphany window takes some 40-60 seconds or more to even appear after clicking the icon, so the problem extends beyond basic display lag. Firefox is even slower. On the other hand, if I boot into Feisty on the same machine, Epiphany starts in 5-10 seconds as normal. Watching top when the machine is idle, the CPU is ~ 95% idle. Today's upgrade from 2.6.22-10 to -11 did not help with the problem. The problem seems to be ACPI-related, as disabling ACPI using the acpi=off kernel parameter restores performance. This was unnecessary in Feisty and earlier versions. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- [gutsy] Gutsy performance lagging dramatically https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/138423 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I've now upgraded to Feisty and with the Serialmonkey drivers it seems to be working okay! -- airodump-ng is unable to set monitor mode https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/69698 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 57008] Re: Dapper Xdm login fails
Unfortunately I'm not using Dapper anymore so am unable to reproduce. Both Edgy and Feisty work fine for me. Is it best to close this bug and let someone reopen/re-report if they encounter the same problem? -- Dapper Xdm login fails https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/57008 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 37364] Re: backlight does not turn off with xset dpms...works with vbetool
This is still happening with current Feisty package for X.org 7.2 (package xorg v. 7.2-0ubuntu2) -- backlight does not turn off with xset dpms...works with vbetool https://launchpad.net/bugs/37364 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 81045] Re: [Edgy] Screen isn't switched off on energy saving
Michael, does 'xset dpms force off' turn off the backlight? If not, this bug is with X and not with gnome-power-manager -- [Edgy] Screen isn't switched off on energy saving https://launchpad.net/bugs/81045 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 41340] Re: X server (S3 Savage) freezing with DRI
S3 Savage DRI has now been fixed with Alex Deucher's patch for the Xorg 7.1 Savage module - see here: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6357 Can we possibly get this included for Feisty? -- X server (S3 Savage) freezing with DRI https://launchpad.net/bugs/41340 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 19410] Re: Laptop backlight does not turn off
Unfortunately the latest Edgy updates as at today have not not fixed this for me. I'm running a Toshiba notebook with S3 Savage. Running 'xset dpms force off' makes the screen go black but the backlight stays on (it doesn't even turn off for a second), and just a few seconds later the screen starts to increase in brightness and appears to 'display' the pattern of transistors making up the TFT panel itself. I am happy for you to close this bug, and I'll go and lurk in the other similar backlight bugs until this is fixed, e.g.: bug 71368 bug 37364 bug 37540 bug 41994 bug 40667 bug 30802 -- Laptop backlight does not turn off https://launchpad.net/bugs/19410 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 71368] Re: Laptop backlight stays always on
Any news of a fix for this? As with bug 37364, 'xset dpms force off' clears the display but does not turn it off. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg- video-i810/+bug/37364/ I have to use 'sudo vbetool dpms off' to actually switch off the backlight. This is troublesome, because on both Edgy Feisty at the time of writing xscreensaver never disables the backlight in accordance with your power management settings. I am thus forced to either close the lid or suspend to RAM before going away for any length of time if I don't want the backlight to carry on burning. -- Laptop backlight stays always on https://launchpad.net/bugs/71368 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
