[Bug 2063981] Re: Noble Numbat distribution upgrade failure too many errors

2024-04-29 Thread Captain
ran "sudo e2fsck -n /dev/ubuntu-vg/ubuntu-lv" on my encrypted lvm, it is
clean and there are no issues with the system files, or my system
operation prior to attempting the upgrade.

running "do-distribution-upgrade -d" will fail:

[Bug 1884104] [NEW] Ubuntu 20.04 Server "Losing" IP4 address

2020-06-18 Thread Captain Skyhawk
Public bug reported:

(Cannot figure out what package is causing this, so I'm filing it as a
bug this way.)

What version of Ubuntu?

Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

What I expected to happen?

Normal behavior.

What happened instead?

I have several VMs running on a host, all running Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. To
prepare for an eventual 20.04 upgrade, I upgraded one guest to Ubuntu
20.04.

Everything went smoothly, with no issues.

The next day, however, I try to ssh into the guest, and it is not
responding.

I use virt-manager to show a console window to the guest directly.
Everything seems fine, but when I do "ifconfig", there is no IPv4
address listed (the "inet" line is simply not there, and there is only
an 'inet6' version left). I do an "ifdown eth0 && ifup eth0", and the
IPv4 address is listed again.

Just to see what's going on, I add the following line to cron:

*/5 * * * * (/bin/date && /sbin/ifconfig eth0) >>
/home/webuser/log/ifconfig.output

I check the output later on, and I see that the IPv4 address was being
successfully returned by the ifconfig command, until the 9AM run of this
cron command, and then, the IPv4 address is gone again.

Any ideas? This behavior is only happening on the guest running 20.04
-- the 18.04 guests are unaffected.

The problem appears to go away after selecting the proprietary Nvidia
driver instead of the Nouveau driver. So it is at least an interaction
with the Nouveau driver, or possible the bug is in that driver. Should I
report it there?

[Bug 1775212] [NEW] Windows not painted completely since 18.04

2018-06-05 Thread Captain Chaos
Public bug reported:

Since upgrading to Xubuntu 18.04, the graphics on my desktop are broken.
It seems to affect all windows and menus, which are painted
incompletely, or with the wrong colours. It seems to get progressively
worse, to the point of making programs unusable because entire sections
of the user interface are missing, so this should have high priority
IMHO. I will attach a few screenshots as examples.

[Bug 1723105] [NEW] Upgrade to 1.28-1ubuntu2.2 fails because postrm script is a directory containing kernel modules

2017-10-12 Thread Captain Chaos
Public bug reported:

When trying to upgrade my Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS server using the command
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade, the upgrade consistently failed while trying
to upgrade libidn11 to version 1.28-1ubuntu2.2 with the following error
message:

unable to install (supposed) new info file
`/var/lib/dpkg/tmp.ci/postrm': Is a directory

I determined that instead of being a script,
/var/lib/dpkg/info/libidn11:amd64.postrm was in fact a directory! It
contained two kernel modules, llc.ko and llc2.lo. I will attach the two
files.

To get the package to install and the upgrade operation to proceed, I
renamed /var/lib/dpkg/info/libidn11:amd64.postrm to
/var/lib/dpkg/info/libidn11:amd64.postrm.bak, after which a renewed
dist-upgrade proceeded without any warnings or errors.

After the installation /var/lib/dpkg/info/libidn11:amd64.postrm once
again existed, and is now a script, as expected.

What gives? Is this a bug in either this or the previous version of
libidn? Is it now correctly installed? Was I hacked (I get a bit nervous
when executable files spontaneously appear in random places)? I scanned
the two files with virustotal.com, and it found nothing, but I don't
think that means much.

[Bug 1553172] Re: Wrong titlebar shown after switching full screen windows with task switcher

2016-03-04 Thread Captain Chaos
** Description changed:

- After switching between the open full screen windows of an application
+ After switching between the open maximised windows of an application
using either the launch bar (by clicking on the application icon) or by
spreading the windows (by pressing Super + W), the wrong titlebar is
displayed at the top of the screen. Instead of showing the titlebar of
the newly activated window, it shows the titlebar of the previously
  active window, greyed out.

This is especially annoying if you want to then drag the window you
thought you activated to another monitor or workspace, as it will
instead drag the previously active window. It also prevents you from
using the menubar of the newly activated window.

Note that underneath the titlebar it does show the contents of the newly
activated window, which also has the keyboard focus.

  Possibly relevant information:
  * I have three monitors
  * I have focus follows mouse enabled
  * I have the menubars of each window in their titlebars instead of at the top
of the screen

2015-01-06 Thread Captain Chaos
This bug is still alive and kicking. Trying to scan from the ADF of an
Epson XP-810, via the network, hangs the scanner. It loads the document,
but when it is about to start the actual scan, the Epson starts flashing
all its lights and has to be turned off, and xsane reports:
Error/Failed to start scanner: Error during device I/O. Simple-scan
fails with a similar message. Scanning from the glass plate works fine.

[Bug 1003950] Re: launcher does not show minimized update manager while clicked

2014-12-04 Thread Captain Chaos
This is still happening on 14.04. I too have multiple monitors, with the
middle one being the main monitor. There have been other programs which
can't cope with that, perhaps it has something to do with this problem
as well?

It would be quite nice to have it confirmed for trusty. It only shows as
nominated above. I don't know what that means, but it definitely isn't
fixed on 14.04...

2014-11-03 Thread Captain Zlog
Been doing some more investigation on this problem. Looked in System
Settings-Security Privacy and found on the Security tab that both
Waking from suspend and Returning from blank screen were both
checked, indicating password required in both cases. Unchecked both
items and the problem has now gone away - functionality is now as
expected. Not sure if these items were checked under 14.04 and just
ignored when resuming from suspend or whether the upgrade to 14.10
actually set these items. Bug can now be closed.

[Bug 1387562] Re: Touchpad settings ignored

2014-11-03 Thread Captain Zlog
Been looking into this further and found that it only affected affected
one account on the computer - the other accounts worked as expected.
Eventually found that the impacted account had a syndaemon command
running at Startup to disable the touchpad whilst typing, as this
function didn't work in System Settings. However, the setting to Disable
touchpad whilst typing was still set in System Settings. Turning off
this setting seems to have cured the problem. Obviously the original bug
that causes the Disable touchpad whilst typing system setting not to
work still needs to be addressed.

[Bug 1327820] [NEW] Multi-monitor - Maximized Firefox windows cast shadows on adjacent monitors

2014-06-08 Thread Captain Chaos
Public bug reported:

I don't know if this is a Firefox bug or a Compiz one. Feel free to
reassign. What happens is that maximized Firefox windows with the
keyboard focus cast shadows on windows on adjacent monitors on a
multimonitor setup. It appears to happen only with Firefox, I will
report if I see it happen with other programs.

This is reported as fixed in bug #928807, so perhaps it wasn't (fully),
or it has regressed. Or maybe this is an unrelated problem. I'm seeing
it in Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit on a laptop with an NVidia GeForce GTX 765M.

Attached is a screenshot showing the problem. I have three monitors,
with the launcher placed on the middle one. The editor window is on my
third monitor and as you can see Firefox is casting a shadow on it.

Reinstalling the nvidia-331 package appears to have solved it. Still
not sure what caused the first build to fail, though.

I saw the comment about completing a check list, but unfortunately it
doesn't actually contain any links. If someone will point me to it I'll
happily follow a check list, although given the amount of information
I've already provided I wonder whether it will tell anybody anything
they couldn't already know from reading my bug report.

[Bug 1310414] [NEW] cut does not separate any fields if newline is set as the delimiter for -d

2014-04-20 Thread Captain Obvious
Public bug reported:

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
Release:14.04

$ apt-cache policy coreutils
coreutils:
  Installed: 8.21-1ubuntu5
  Candidate: 8.21-1ubuntu5
  Version table:
 *** 8.21-1ubuntu5 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

The cut utility is no longer separating fields if newline is used for the
delimiter. I grabbed cut from my precise installation backup and put it in my
home directory to compare it to the current one in /usr/bin. I have an example
set up:

$ echo -e monkey 1\nmonkey 2\nmonkey 3
monkey 1
monkey 2
monkey 3

This is cut run with precise's version:

$ echo -e monkey 1\nmonkey 2\nmonkey 3 | ./cut -f 1 -d'
 '
monkey 1

or, if you're snazzy like me, you use:

$ echo -e monkey 1\nmonkey 2\nmonkey 3 | ./cut -f 1 -d$'\n'
monkey 1

That's what I expected to happen with this version. Instead, I got this:

$ echo -e monkey 1\nmonkey 2\nmonkey 3 | /usr/bin/cut -f 1 -d$'\n'
monkey 1
monkey 2
monkey 3

$ echo -e monkey 1\nmonkey 2\nmonkey 3 | /usr/bin/cut -f 1 -d'
 '
monkey 1
monkey 2
monkey 3

[Bug 1232016] [NEW] Can't scan from Brother ADS-2100

2013-09-27 Thread Captain Chaos
Public bug reported:

I'm trying to use my new Brother ADS-2100 double sides document scanner
with ADF in Ubuntu 13.04 64-bit, but having no luck. Scanimage reports
that it sees the scanner, but when I try to scan a page it says
sane_start: Invalid argument. sane-find-scanner does not report seeing
the scanner at all. Simple-scan sees the scanner, but gives an error
message when I try to scan.

I know the scanner works and the problem is not with the cable or
something like that, because it works in Windows. I have also tried
another USB cable.

The output of scanimage -L is:

device `brother4:bus2;dev1' is a Brother ADS-2100 USB scanner

The output of sudo scanimage -L is the same (but it takes longer). I
will attach the output of sane-find-scanner and sudo sane-find-
scanner, but both report not finding *any* USB devices, which is
strange, because doesn't scanimage also use libsane to find the scanner?

lsusb does find the scanner:

Bus 003 Device 021: ID 04f9:60a1 Brother Industries, Ltd

It does not matter which USB port I use (I had it on a hub at first, but
it doesn't work on two different USB ports on the machine itself
either).

Simple-scan does report seeing the scanner (as a Brother ADS-2100,
which is correct), but when I try to scan something it works for a while
and then gives a red error bar saying Failed to scan/Unable to start
scan . I will attach screenshots and the output of simplescan
--debug.

I followed Brother's instructions and installed the brother4 driver
using the deb from their website
(http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/download_scn.html#brscan4_ads),
as well as the deb they provide for setting the udev rules to allow
scanning by regular users
(http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/instruction_scn1c.html#u13.04).

I have already tried various potential solutions I found around the web:

* adding lines to /lib/udev/rules.d/40-libsane.rules or
/lib/udev/rules.d/50-udev-default.rules
* adding myself to the lp and scanner groups

None of it seemed to make any difference, and also I think Brother's
debs already take care of those things. In addition, if the problem was
with device permissions, scanning would work as root, right?

Please let me know what other information I can provide or things I can
try to get to the bottom of this!

The output of scan-image -T is as follows:

scanimage: rounded value of br-x from 215.9 to 215.88
scanimage: rounded value of br-y from 355.6 to 355.567
scanimage: sane_start: Invalid argument

All indications are that there is *some* communication with the scanner,
but then something goes wrong.

I tried the latest development release (as of 27-9-2013), but it won't
boot at all on my Optimus laptop, even with no external monitors
attached. It crashes with a divide error: [#1] SMP somewhere in

[Bug 1225646] [NEW] Ubuntu hangs when booting laptop with HDMI and VGA monitors attached

2013-09-15 Thread Captain Chaos
Public bug reported:

I have a bto 15CL58 laptop, a Haswell laptop which has integrated Intel
graphics as well as an NVidia GTX765M with the Optimus system for
switching between the integrated and discrete GPU.

When I try to boot Ubuntu 13.04 on it while having an HDMI monitor as
well as a VGA monitor attached to the laptop, Ubuntu hangs. It shows the
graphical Ubuntu logo with the dots underneath and then just sits there.
Windows has no problem with this configuration, so I know the hardware
can do it. If I remove the VGA connection Ubuntu does boot (and allows
me to use the integrated display as well as the HDMI monitor).

Please let me know what I can try or what more information I can provide
to help solve this problem!

Note that after upgrading the kernel to 3.11 (from ~kernel-ppa/mainline)
and installing the updated NVidia proprietary driver packages from
~xorg-edgers (since after the kernel update the kernel module doesn't
compile), it *does* work!

[Bug 1065236] [NEW] Unknown traffic reported as FTP

2012-10-10 Thread Captain Chaos
Public bug reported:

The version of ntop provided with Ubuntu reports certain unknown traffic
as FTP, which is not very useful and renders the statistics it
generates for my server (which has no FTP traffic, yet the bulk of the
traffic is reported as FTP by ntop) pretty much useless.

According to this post this is a known problem which is fixed in the
latest release:

http://listgateway.unipi.it/pipermail/ntop/2012-February/016709.html

In addition, when you open the web interface of the version of ntop
provided with Ubuntu, it says Version: a minimally supported but OLDER
version - please upgrade at the bottom of the page.

Could the version of ntop included with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS please be
upgraded to the latest version (5.0.1)?

[Bug 1019454] [NEW] GKSUDO WINDOW LOSES FOCUS IF THE PASSWORD PROMPT IS RIGHT-CLICKED!!

2012-06-29 Thread Captain Obvious
Public bug reported:

I just realized what was going on today, although I've seen it happen
before -- but I don't remember if it was the same version of ubuntu (or
the gksu package). When the gksudo window pops up, supposedly
grabbing your keyboard, if a user were to RIGHT-CLICK on the prompt
line for whatever reason, two things happen:

First, the right-click menu appears BELOW the gksudo window. Perhaps
that was intended? Problem is, though, you only catch it if you either
have a keen eye or know it's gonna do that. So there's that...

Second, perhaps BECAUSE of the menu appearing BEHIND the gksudo window,
the window directly behind where you right-clicked is now in focus. But
you can't know until you start typing, because the cursor in the gksudo
window is still flashing, ready for input. By that time, you've already
entered a few letters of your passwd, if not the whole thing. If you
hadn't yet noticed a problem, or don't expect it to BE a problem
(perhaps because the TERMINAL version of sudo DOESN'T show the 's
for each key press), you've just sent your password to everyone in the
chatroom you were in. (if you're that unlucky, and that window was the
one that got focused).

What's worse, is that you CAN'T get focus BACK to the gksudo window
without knowing what's going on. You can still click cancel, but left
or middle-clicking on the actual prompt doesn't bring it back into focus
(although the cursor flashes as if it IS in focus). The only way to
bring it back into keyboard focus is to right-click again, THIS time the
context menu appears ABOVE the gksudo window. Now it's focused.
Moreover, further right-clicking doesn't go through the window like it
did the first time... i.e. it works as intended.

I tried this with multiple window managers, all do the same thing. I'm
using Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit, gksu version 2.0.2-6ubuntu1

[Bug 980715] [NEW] Menu bar is illegible grey on grey with GTK look and feel on default theme

2012-04-13 Thread Captain Chaos
Public bug reported:

On the default Ubuntu theme, using the GTK look and feel (the default
system look and feel on Ubuntu), menu bars are almost completely
illegible, to the point of being unusable. They use grey on a slightly
darker shade of grey. The menus themselves look fine, they use a light
grey background and dark grey text .

I assume it's picking up the wrong colour from the GTK theme. I haven't
actually tested other themes, it's possible that they would look better,
but it seems to me that it should be usable with the default theme.
Using other look and feels would also work around the problem, but
that's not a solution for similar reasons.

However, the headset is still identified as Speakers in the Sound

[Bug 978825] [NEW] Seeking disabled when starting podcast after downloading it

2012-04-11 Thread Captain Chaos
Public bug reported:

1. Subscribe to a podcast
2. Doubleclick on an old episode to download it
3. After it has been fully downloaded doubleclick it again to start playing it
4. The podcast starts playing, but the seek bar does not have a knob, leaving
you unable to seek within it. You have to start another (already downloaded)
podcast and then start the one you really want to listen to again to get it to
reappear

In case the specific podcast matters, I'm noticing this on the Skeptics
Guide of the Universe
(http://theskepticsguide.org/feed/rss.aspx?feed=SGU) (I haven't tested
other podcasts, but it seems unlikely to me that it matters).

Please let me know if you need more information or I can help in some
other way to debug this problem!

12.04 it is reported twice:

Digital Output (S/PDIF)
Sennheiser USB headset

Speakers
Sennheiser USB headset

Both have a headset icon. Only the Speaker entry appears to work
correctly; when I try to select the Digital Output (S/PDIF) entry the
selection usually immediately jumps to some other entry.

It's also strange that the icon is a headset, so it appear to recognize
that it's a headset, yet the label for the working entry is Speakers.
I don't think that is correct, it should be Headphones (as it is for
the headphones connector on my motherboard).

Let me know if you need additional information or if I can help in any
other way to fix this problem!

[Bug 921276] Re: HUD appears every 30 seconds without any interaction (playing a fullscreen video in totem in particular)

2012-01-26 Thread Captain Chaos
I see this behaviour too. I make it twenty seconds before the HUD pops
up, whenever Totem is playing a video. The specific video on which I
noticed it was: http://people.canonical.com/~ories/HUD.m4v (in case this
actually has something to do with the specific video that is playing,
which seems unlikely but you never know).

It's not limited to full screen for me (in fact I did not even try full
screen).

It only happens when video is actually playing. When no video has been
started, or it is paused, the HUD does not pop up. It does not matter
whether Totem is in the foreground or in the background.

My bug #921689 was just automatically marked as a duplicate of this one
by the apport retracing service. I just wanted to check whether that
is actually correct, as my crash has a different stack trace:

StacktraceTop:

 abort () from /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libc.so.6
 __assert_fail () from /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libc.so.6

 XRenderCreateCursor () from /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libXrender.so.1

It occurred in XRenderCreateCursor(), not in XCreatePixmap(). Should I
leave it as a duplicate?

[Bug 918758] [NEW] QT incorrectly determines the default locale from the LC_* variables

2012-01-19 Thread Captain Chaos
Public bug reported:

QT 4.4, included in Ubuntu Oneiric Ocelot, incorrectly determines the
default locale, causing QT-based programs to use the wrong language for
the user interface, among other things.

There is already a bug report for this in QT:
https://bugreports.qt.nokia.com/browse/QTBUG-1313. According to that
report the bug has been fixed in version 4.8. Is it possible to either
upgrade QT to 4.8, or backport that fix?

The problem appears to be that QT incorrectly uses the LC_NUMERIC
variable to determine the default locale (when it should only determine
the number format to use), and ignores the LANG variable. My locale
settings are as follows:

LANG=en_US.UTF-8
LANGUAGE=en_US:en
LC_CTYPE=nl_NL.UTF-8
LC_NUMERIC=nl_NL.UTF-8
LC_TIME=nl_NL.UTF-8
LC_COLLATE=nl_NL.UTF-8
LC_MONETARY=nl_NL.UTF-8
LC_MESSAGES=en_US.UTF-8
LC_PAPER=nl_NL.UTF-8
LC_NAME=nl_NL.UTF-8
LC_ADDRESS=nl_NL.UTF-8
LC_TELEPHONE=nl_NL.UTF-8
LC_MEASUREMENT=nl_NL.UTF-8
LC_IDENTIFICATION=en_US.UTF-8
LC_ALL=

And yet QT based programs (in contrast with all other programs on my
computer) use Dutch for the user interface, when they should be using
English as indicated by the LANG variable. Setting LC_ALL causes them to
use English, but that is not an acceptable solution since LC_ALL
overrides all the other LC_* variables.

[Bug 727928] Re: Upon starting a program full screen with NVIDIA Xinerama, the window is immediately moved to the wrong monitor

2011-12-30 Thread Captain Chaos
 Why not Unity-2D?

Because Unity-2D doesn't work with Xinerama either. It puts everything
on my left monitor, and puts an identical copy of the screen on the
second and third monitors. If I try to drag something off the left
monitor it just disappears, and clicking the mouse on the second or
third monitor has no effect.

The *only* combination that (more or less) works for me (on a system
which is by no means old or exotic) is the proprietary driver with GNOME
Classic without effects. If that is the only thing that Ubuntu can offer
me, then it's not unreasonable to expect it to at least work correctly.

To the contrary, this is a metacity behavior, not by Ubuntu's design.

I get that it isn't by design. That's what makes it a bug. And I
understand that the bug is in metacity, that's why I filed the bug on
metacity.

I understand that Ubuntu doesn't have unlimited resources, but this bug
can't be that hard to fix. Note that the window is initially opened on
the *correct* monitor. But then (once it first receives the focus, it
appears to be, which isn't always immediately) something (presumably
metacity) moves the window to the wrong monitor.

It is active behaviour, probably a feature which is misfiring, which
can't be that hard to just turn off or disable, or at least make
configurable, for someone familiar with the metacity codebase. Perhaps
it even already is configurable, if only someone could tell me how!

I'd also like to point out that there is no evidence that this is
specific to Nvidia, or even Xinerama. The only way I can get multiple
monitors to work at all is with Xinerama, but for all I know the same
would happen without it.

@bilalakhtar: soulsource just added his similar experience with AMD, so
I don't think this is specific to NVidia.

I discovered that there is a tool which is supposed to test for Unity 3D
support. I don't know if this is used to decide whether to fire up Unity
3D when you log in, but on my system it incorrectly reports that Unity
3D *is* supported, so that may explain why my system hangs when I try to
log in with the default session. Here is the output of
unity_support_test:

them, and Twitter unfortunately shortens every link using their own link
shortener, whether you want it to or not, and whether it actually
becomes shorter or not.

The behaviour I am seeing is that as soon as I paste a link into
Gwibber, it gets shortened (using is.gd, in my case), so before it is
even posted.

[Bug 896597] [NEW] windows jumps to the right when clicking on the menu bar

2011-11-26 Thread Captain Chaos
Public bug reported:

When I click on an empty area of the menu bar of gnome-terminal, the
entire window immediately jumps one screen width to the right!

This is on a three monitor system using Xinerama. Screen 0 is in the
middle, screen 1 to the right of it and screen 2 to the left. I will
attach my xorg.conf file.

[Bug 894132] Re: unity does not start after upgrade to oneiric ocelot

2011-11-24 Thread Captain Chaos
I tried it. unity --reset appears to kinda sorta work and start Unity
3D. However it is unusable, and logging in with it still doesn't work.

The first time I tried it Xinerama was still enabled. This resulted in
three mirrored copies of Unity, one on each monitor (which all acted as
if I clicked on them, any time I clicked on one of them). The desktop
background image was shifted to the right, and the mouse didn't click
where the mouse cursor was displayed, but one screen-width to the right,
which was extremely confusing and unusable.

I then tried again with Xinerama disabled. This time it looked a bit
better. However it only used my middle monitor. The left and right
monitors just displayed a white screen with a menu bar on top
(apparently a Nautilus menu bar) and no way to start programs. Again,
unusable. Also because since the mouse cursor does not stop at the left
edge of the middle screen it is *extremely* hard to get the Unity panel
to pop up.

None of this made any difference to logging in to a Unity 3D session
directly. That still didn't work, only displaying a menu bar (from
Nautilus, presumably) at the top of every monitor with no way to start
programs or even log out.

Man, multi monitor support gets worse with every release of Ubuntu. It
has now gotten to the point where it is unusable on *every* combination
of display driver or session. The only one that works at all (with all
monitors) is GNOME Classic (No Effects), with Xinerama enabled, but even
that doesn't work right. When I try to drag icons on the desktop, the
icons are suddenly transposed a full screen width to the left of the
mouse cursor!

What a terrible mess. Is Ubuntu even tested on multiple monitors at all?
Here is the long list of failures of Ubuntu to allow me to use all the
monitors on my system:

* I have to use the proprietary NVidia driver because the open source driver
does not support multiple cards.
* I have to use Xinerama because otherwise there is no way of combining all
screens into one desktop and be able to drag windows from one screen to
another. (Previous versions did at least work without Xinerama, with each
screen acting as a separate desktop, but that is no longer the case in this
version.)
* When Xinerama is enabled the ONLY session that works somewhat correctly is
GNOME Classic (No Effects). Every other one either will not start at all, or
has horrible bugs with mouse positioning, window placement, unusable second and
third screen, etc.
* And even that doesn't work fully correctly, as described above.

And this is not some exotic or ancient system. It's a modern PC with a 3
GHz quad core Intel processor, 8 GB of RAM and two NVidia Geforce 8800
GTX cards, two monitors on the first card and one on the second.
Something which Ubuntu should comfortably support.

[Bug 894079] [NEW] package man-db 2.6.0.2-2 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: subprocess installed post-installation script was killed by signal (Terminated)

2011-11-23 Thread Captain Chaos
Public bug reported:

The installation of man-db failed when upgrading my Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit
install to 11.04. It hung at Processing triggers for man-db... in the
terminal view. I waited for ten minutes, but it did not progress, and
there was no CPU or harddisk activity. I had to kill -9 the man-
db.postinst process to continue (it did not respond to a regular kill).

The installation then progressed, but then aborted at the end of
installing the upgrades with Could not install the upgrades/The upgrade
has aborted. Your system could be in an unusable state. A recovery will
run now (dpkg --configure -a).

The update then aborted without doing the clean up step, so I have no
idea what state my system is in now. I haven't rebooted yet to see if it
will boot.

The upgrade process should definitely be more robust when there are
failures, instead of just quitting and leaving the user to figure out
what the hell has happened and what state his system is in!
