On my laptop Ubuntu 10.04 freezes randomly in the same way as 9.10 did. There are no consistent log messages but I think the main problem seems to be the ath5k driver/chipset. The wlan disconnects and reconnects very often. In Jaunty I installed madwifi instead of ath5k for some time during which I hadn't any system freezes. My laptop also totally freezes (Alt-SysRq doesn't work) randomly without any log notification. In Jaunty the Intel GMA950 graphics was problematic and also the atheros WLAN chipset (ath5k module). The graphic driver seem to work now but the WLAN connection is quite unstable and randomly disconnects and reconnects. I also have to kill xsplash on my Aspire One netbook because it uses 100% cpu after gdm. In the background all other programs already started (netbook launcher, panel, network manager, mail notifier etc.).
