[Bug 1876184] [NEW] FreeCAD is missing PyQt5 dependency
Public bug reported: After upgrading from Ubuntu 19.10 to 20.04, FreeCAD is no longer able to open some workbenches, such as Arch or Draft. [Bug 1790094] Re: Calamares installer - "Erase disk" option is not available
Hi Walter I ran into this problem on two different machines, one with an SSD HDD and one with a regular HDD. Both machines had Lubuntu 18.04.01 installed. I also had the same problem today, where I installed lubuntu-18.10-beta- desktop-amd64. I did a manual partitioning and the installation completed. [Bug 930447] Re: Unable to start Ubuntu 12.04 live CD with syslinux loader on Pentium M x86 Laptop due to bug in PAE kernel, initramfs or syslinux

[Bug 930447] Re: Unable to start Ubuntu 12.04 live CD with syslinux loader on Pentium M x86 Laptop due to bug in PAE kernel, initramfs or syslinux
This is absolutly amasing news guyes, had lost any hope that this status on this bug would ever change. Thankyou to the most persistent advocats arguing this bug should be solved, and not least to Chris and others involved in figuring out howto... After reciving these great news, the first thing I did was to download the Kubuntu Trusty daily image (2014.03.06) from cdimages.ubunut.com. Used a 12.04.4 box an flashed the Trusty ISO to an USB stick, using the "Start Disk Creator" a so often before. Booting my good old ThinkPad R51 from the USB stick, just to eksperience the "your CPU i not supported ... no PAE". Restarded the R51 and added the kernel "forcepae" parameter to the syslinux parameter line. Things looked excactly the same as so often before, installing any sort of 12.04 ubuntu flavors. Back to the other ubuntu box, re-fdisk and format the USB, "Start Disk Creator" and then ever so often used grub2 installation to USB when creating 12.04.x USBs for older hardware: sudo grub-install --recheck --boot-directory /media/usb-stick/boot /dev/sdX nano /media/usb-stick/boot/grub.cfg menuentry 'Start Kubuntu' --class ubuntu --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os { recordfail insmod gzio insmod part_msdos insmod ext2 set root='(hd0,msdos1)' echo'Indlaeser Linux 3.13.0-16-generic-pae ...' linux /casper/vmlinuz file=/cdrom/preseed/kubuntu.seed boot=casper maybe-ubiquity quiet splash -- echo'Indlaeser startramdisk ...' initrd /casper/initrd.lz } Returned the stick to the good old R51, at it just booted from the USB like a charm - just amasing. So right now upgrades from Precise to Trusty should work correct ?, but the old syslinux "original" of this bug still persist right ?. So new users, and users unaware of this bug, will still experienc problems booting CDs or USB sticks created from ISOs, which with all the good work and all the posting above seems almost unbearable to me... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/930447 Title: Unable to start Ubuntu 12.04 live CD with syslinux loader on Pentium M x86 Laptop due to bug in PAE kernel, initramfs or syslinux To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/930447/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 930447] Re: Unable to start Ubuntu 12.04 live CD with syslinux loader on Pentium M x86 Laptop due to bug in PAE kernel, initramfs or syslinux
oliver, I agree with you entirely on your previous comments. The ThinkPad series were rather expensive hardware, and maybe on that account rather long lasting hardware. To this date I'm servicing 5 of these older ThinkPads running 12.04 *buntu, installed using the USB GRUB method described above in this bug. In later *buntus the kernel packages have been deliberately crippled by developers, so it isn't quiet as easy to work around, while you now have to fiddle with the kernel package for installation, and every time a subsequent kernel upgrade happens. I completely agree with the Ubuntu decision to let NON-PAE hardware go, but can't understand why hardware that works absolutely perfect with even the latest (kernel-fixed) versions of *buntu is left out this way. The change in the pre 12.04 kernel packages placing an OBSTRUCTION, is absolutely misplaced. The syslinux bug on the other hand demands bug- fixing work to be done, and we must accept if neither Canonical or the syslinux developer will spend time on that. But what I absolutely don't understand is, that the time used to make the *buntu kernel packages OBSTRUCTION, wasn't spent on fixing syslinux bug instead. A lot of people (ThinkPad among others) would probably have benefitted from this, and even those who don't find this bug rapport, and probably don't know what hit them when trying to install *buntu on their great hardware. Instead they may try another newer bad operating system from around 2007, and find that it just installs and works on their hardware - thus linux or *buntu is just a pain to use, which is hard for us who value open source and linux to argue against. So everybody, except you know who, looses out.

My comment was expected to become #98 as an comment on what Micah Gersten (micahg) #97 wrote. Further more I just wanted to comment the statement oliver (oliver-schinagl) made in #96 about it was either the squash image or the initrd.gz (initrd.lz I reckon). I know the first line mixes #97 and Oliver in an unintended way though. But anyway I was to long to commit my comment and you came first... That said, your probably right about syslinux, as I've just managed to put Grub2 on my USB stik too, and your absolutely right it now boots and install Kubuntu from exactly the same files that throw the error message with syslinux as bootloader.
>From what I understand Oliver is saying in #97, the problem is not that a non-pae kernel should be supportet, but that the LiveCD does prevent installation on boxes that run the -pae kerne just fine. I've successfully installed and used the -pae enabled kernel on a ThinkPad R51, on which I receive the the error message about the the CPU not supporting PAE when running the LiveCD. A clean installation was first carried out using the the non-pae mini.iso (http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/precise/main/installer-i386/current/images/netboot/non-pae/mini.iso) to perform a network installation. After the installation and a full online-update was done, the PAE enabled kernel (linux-image-3.2.0-24-generic-pae_3.2.0-24.39_i386) was installed. A reboot and a the non-PAE kernel ( linux-image-3.2.0-24-generic_3.2.0-24.39_i386) was removed. I've tried (like #96 suggested) to exchange the kernel and initrd in /casper on the LiveCD from USB (by startup-disk creator), with the working -pae kernel from harddisk. It bootet from the USB, but the error message about missing PAE capability was still thrown, why I believe it must be somthing in the squashfs image then. So the conclusion must be, like that of that the #91, that there is a bug in the LiveCD image, that prevent it from running the PAE enabled kernel even on some PAE capable hardware.

[Bug 930447] Re: Unable to Install Ubuntu 12.04 on Pentium M x86 Laptop due to PAE kernel
What a decision to make, leaving older but fine and working hardware out of acceptable simple install options - couldn't it had waited until pre- precise releases ?. Unfortunately I've only first become hit by this after the release, as I've been using (testing) Precise on this hardware type (non-PAE capable Intel) since before the beta1 releases and just been upgrading without noticing this change. This leaves me with a several boxes, for which I had decided that Kubuntu Precise should be the final upgrade, while it works like an absolutely charm (best compared to several previous releases including Lucid) and would become an LTS. Sorry for the late comment, but I had to make a statement - just in hope of a simpler CD/USB ISO install option would come around as more people now probably gets hit by this decision, when trying to install the final Precise release. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/930447 Title: Unable to Install Ubuntu 12.04 on Pentium M x86 Laptop due to PAE kernel To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/930447/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: On Kubuntu 11.10 it's impossible to create a new working connection to a non-broadcasting wireless network, without doing some CLI magic at the same time. When the connection once has been up and running, reconnection on reboots works fine. On (my dual-boot) Ubuntu 11.10 the CLI magic wasn't necessary, and you can connect fast and easy through the nm-applet GUI, using [Connect to a hidden wireless network] from it's main menu. The problem seems to have been solved upstreams though, as installing the Precis pre-alpha package on 11.10 solves the problem - as do installing Precise daily build 2011-10-22. The excact Precise pre-alpha package used to test was found at the bottom of: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/networkmanagement/0.9~svngit.nm09.20111023.ff842e-0ubuntu1/+build/2871626/+files/plasma-widget-networkmanagement_0.9%7Esvngit.nm09.20111023.ff842e-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb And the i386 package at: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/networkmanagement/0.9~svngit.nm09.20111023 .ff842e-0ubuntu1/+build/2871628/+files/plasma-widget- networkmanagement_0.9%7Esvngit.nm09.20111023.ff842e-0ubuntu1_i386.deb The plasma nm-applet now shows a entry field for in the list when the the button [show more] is pressed in the main screen. This problem is reported as a new bug, while is seems that the rather old bug #330811 (from Jaunty) can't be reopened or marked as New. The CLI workaround used to make the original released but buggy plasma-widget-networkmanagement_0.9~svngit.nm09.20110610.0c83d8-0ubuntu5 in Kubuntu 11.10 connect the first time is: sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid [Hidden ESSID Name] ** Affects: plasma-widget-network-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to plasma-widget-network-manager in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/893755 Title: Can't connetc to hidden wireless network To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/plasma-widget-network-manager/+bug/893755/+subscriptions -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs
[Bug 881846] Re: DrRacket has no icon in the launcher and cannot be opened from the Dash
I've never made a .desktop file before, but here's my attempt at fixing the bug: 1. Put the attached file in ~/.local/share/applications 2. Download the icon from http://eecs.northwestern.edu/~robby/logos/plt-logo-red-diffuse.svg and save it to /usr/local/share/icons/drracket.svg After doing the two steps above, DrRacket shows up in the Dash and has an icon on the launcher. [Bug 541511] Re: MASTER: [i855] GPU lockup (apport-crash)
Since this bug, as Geir Ove Myhr points out, is solved upstream, all we just need now, is that the Intel driver is enabled by default in Xorg in Oneiric (11.10) again - instead of the now default simple, featureless and faulty frame buffer driver. I've successfully been using Uneiric Alpha 1 & 2 and alle updates in between and after, with the intel xorg driver on i855 boxes - enabled by the Maverick workaround "Manually enable Intel driver" found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Mavericki8xxStatus. As the upstream bugfixes is apparently only applied to the latest kernels (3.0) and demands drivers from xserver-xorg-video-intel never than 2.14 (2.15 is in Oneiric right now), reenabling the intel driver will only work for Oneiric (11.10) at present time. Right now the bug is seems only "solved" by not using the Intel driver in Lucid, Maverich and Natty, which may be the best way for those releases, if the patches can't be applied to those kernels and and xorg drivers. But for Oneiric the patches are implicit and the fixed Intel driver only requires to be enabled by the Xorg packages, and wouldn't the Alpha period best suited for that purpose ?. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/541511 Title: MASTER: [i855] GPU lockup (apport-crash) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-release-notes/+bug/541511/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I'm affected by this bug on Lucid 10.04.1 and Maverick beta 3, no plymouth bootsplash on startup, but it works fine on shutdown. Further more this seems to affect a lot of (all ?) Regarding comment #170 I'm not sure if it's clear, that the brightness bug only applies to the default ubuntu kernels in Karmic and Lucid, not any of the mainline kernels used, nor is it present in the .35 kernel in Maverick beta jet (that is, mainline kernels don't need the workaround for brightness to work only for volume control and OSD). -- No notification when sliding audio volume, muting volume on ThinkPad X23, X24, X31, X32, X41, X60, T22, T40, T42, T60, R50e, R51, R52 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/357673 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

@Bruno (and Uwe) I do NOT agree with you, as volume control DO NOT cooperate with the KDE/Gnome volume control applet (and neither with the OSD indicator) on Lucid with a 2.6.33 kernel (found in ubuntu mainline kernels) - BTW same for .34 and .35. NEITHER does it work in Maverick beta 1+2+3, even if the keyboard bottoms is able to adjust the volume here too (like Uwe describes). I've done extensive tests on more of the reported boxes (from the bug-headline), and every test on new installations - apart from the kernel of course. The only thing that makes this (and on some boxes the also the broken brightness control and OSD) work, is adding: cp /sys/devices/platform/thinkpad_acpi/hotkey_all_mask /sys/devices/platform/thinkpad_acpi/hotkey_mask to /etc/rc.local And even though a big WARNING has been given by someone (was it Henrique), this just works every time and even in Karmic. >From what I understand from comment #112, only an alsa mixer was put in place in .33 kernel, which does not mean that KDE/Gnome uses this mixer - at least it seem that no buntu release does yet. So of course it would be pretty great if it could be fixed before Maverick is released. -- No notification when sliding audio volume, muting volume on ThinkPad X23, X24, X31, X32, X41, X60, T22, T40, T42, T60, R50e, R51, R52 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/357673 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 614199] Re: No mouse after kernel upgrade
After further investigation, It's in fact the mouse curser that is disappearing or could you say it's invisible and missing. Moving the mouse around, and you can see things get highlighted, and your able to click the highlighted icon/entry like normal. The exact same happens to Lucid using the 2.6.35-14.19 kernel from the Kernel-PPA, while using the previous 2.6.35-12 (the .35RC6 kernel) from here just works too. I too found that this is somewhat hardware dependent, as this only seems to apply boxes (thinkpad laptops ?) using the Intel ICH4 chipset - it could of course be other miner hardware changes. But oddly X detects and register both mouses (touchpad and trackpad), and they are working as described, but why no mouse curser then. -- No mouse after kernel upgrade https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/614199 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 541511] Re: MASTER: [i855] GPU lockup (apport-crash)
@chis I've installed the module from your PPA on a cuple of new-installed boxes, and unfortunatly this seems to makes things even worse than the drivers released within Lucid until now. I'm able to get the boxes running installation and then running Lucid from harddisk, but ONLY by supplying the extra kerne parameter "i915.modeset=1" in Grub in both cases. Then after opgrading the installation from your PPA, I'm still not able to boot without this parameter - the boxes completly freeses just before X starts without it. Then supplying this kernel parameter while using the modules from your PPA, I got the boxes up and running, but with som odd experinces in the desktop enviroment (KDE) - like menu entries suddenly changing colours and making them nearly dissapear into the menu-background. Videoes now "playes" without imidiate X crash though, but without picture ever seen (black screen in the gecko-mediaplayer plugin). And after I've stopped the player X and closed the browser, X sometimes crashes completely. But I have a question though, why can I make an unmodified Lucid run perfect on those boxes by using the kernel image 2.6.32-17, 2.6.33-5, 2.6.34 or now 2.6.35 from the Ubuntu Mainline archive (http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/) ?. No kernel parameter needed, compiz and video playing runs fine and even functions like Brightness control, OSD (found ind KDE) for sound and brightness among other things (not seen working with the released Lucid kernel ever) just works. And then why was KMS disabled for i855 in_last_minute_before_release, just to make Lucid uninstallable to most ordenary i855 user, and making a lot of fuss when they try to upgrade (is this good for a LTS rel.) ?. I can't help wonder why workarounds for a bug, witch to me seems introdused/exposed by the Ubuntu specifik kernels (according to above), are hunted so bad in modules eksternal to the kernel. The real problem must reside in backporting things from the 2.6.33 kernel to the 2.6.32 kernel as both mainline kernel 2.6.32 and 2.6.33 seems working okay - and more people have in different i855 related bugreports replied that they use those kernels as a workaround, some from the backported kernel PPA (https://launchpad.net/~kernel-ppa/+archive/ppa) though. It would be great if Maverick isn't going suffer this fate, and it have until now (Alpha 1, 2 & 2+) been running okay on one of those (i855) boxes with its default 2.6.35 kernel... -- MASTER: [i855] GPU lockup (apport-crash) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/541511 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 463625] Re: Atheros AR5212 poor connection speed
@ashgtx Nope, madwifi is out of K/Ubuntu for good I think, and ath5k despite all the bug are the one non-hackers are bound to from the 9.10 release. The good news is that the ath5k module in compat-wireless-2010-04-19.tar.bz2 from: http://wireless.kernel.org/download/compat-wireless-2.6/ is easier and faster to compile than madwifi (just remember to do a "./scripts/driver-select ath5k" first), and that this particular bug (and probably many other ath5k's) finally been solved. Right now the only way to get this updated driver without compiling, is to use the K/Ubuntu mainline and precompiled 2.6.36 RC1 kernel image (and the 2 header) packages for your CPU architecture from: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.35-rc1-lucid/ The driver will according to the upstream kernel guys never come to the 2.6.32 kernel, which Lucid is based upon. What I think we_could_hope_for, is that someone will put this an updated compat-wireless stack in the repository as the "linux-backports-modules- wireless-lucid-generic" package (right now referencing to a NOT fixed/updated "linux-backports-modules-wireless-2.6.32-22-generic" package). -- Atheros AR5212 poor connection speed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/463625 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Unfortunately the patched kernel doesn't seem to make volume notification work. Further more as brightness was mentioned in the initial bug message, I have to add that adjusting this stopped working since the kernel upgrade from 2.6.32-18 (from Beta 1) to the latest update with the patched 2.6.32-19. Booting into -18 and brightness control (via the powerdevil in kubuntu) works fine, booting back on -19 and it's not working. [Bug 461419] Re: [Karmic Lucid] Atheros AR5211 - ath5k driver connection and performance issues
Finaly I think I've found a break through on the problem of certain ThinkPad adapters (MAC:0xa3, PHY: 0x61) recorded in this tread, regarding the issue that they doesn't work with the default ath5k module installed by *buntu. While trying to capture communication between the adapter and a AP, I changed channel of the AP from a high channel to a rather low one. Suddenly I was able to connect and transfer bandwidth was now perfect (above 18 Mbps). After further testing I've found that using channel 1 to 6 on the AP if okay, using channel 7 and 8 was somewhat suspicious, and channel 9 to 13 was unusable. So if you still experience the connection/performance issue and you have configuration access to your AP, you could try changing the channel to one between 1 and 6 (or 2.412 and 2.437 Mhz). This issue only concerns this particular adapter, while other Atheros adapters types I've used do not suffer from this excact issue. Find if your driver is "ath5k" using : "lsmod | grep ath" Find if your chipset is "MAC:0xa3 and PHY: 0x61" executing : "dmesg | grep -i phy" Find what frequency in Mhz is used when connected : "nm-tool" Please let us know if this solved the problem for you - thanks in advance. -- [Karmic Lucid] Atheros AR5211 - ath5k driver connection and performance issues https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/461419 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

For Kubuntu 9.10 on R52 I can confirm that "echo enable,0x00ff | sudo tee /proc/acpi/ibm/hotkey" (and mask 0x00fd too) works for volume control but NOT for brightness. Brightness buttons works but, but no OSD and slider in PowerDevil does not. -- No notification when sliding audio volume, muting volume on ThinkPad X23, X31, X32, X41, X60, T22, T40, T42, T60, R50e, R51, R52 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/357673 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 461419] Re: [Karmic] Atheros AR5211 - ath5k driver connection and performance issues
@davidyu Thanks, it seems you are using the same type of adapter for your T60, as I am having bad experience with on more ThinkPads from the R-series, and that too have been reported not working above. What is different is that you are probably using a Certificate (LEAP) and WPA or WPA2 Enterprice right ? - where my bad experiences with this adapter type (and the ath5k module) is based primarily on WPA and WPA2 Personal or Webbased auth. on an Enterprise Cisco network and partly WPA/WPA2 Personal on different types of other SMB/home routers. From this I wonder if the bug could be related to an issue with the supplicant instead, and I try to see if I'm able get expected performance with a WPA/WPA2 Enterprice setup. Are you able to get normal max speed (for 54G) around 18 to 22 Mbps (download) on your setup, or just as I experience less than 1 to 2 Mbps ? -- [Karmic] Atheros AR5211 - ath5k driver connection and performance issues https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/461419 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 461419] Re: [Karmic] Atheros AR5211 - ath5k driver connection and performance issues
@davidyu, Could you please post a "sudo lspci -vvnn" and a "dmesg | grep -i phy" from your working T60, there are still R/T60 with AR5212 based adapters not working without using the madwifi driver. What encryption are you using ?
