[Bug 187153] Re: totem doesn't load the subtitles
I've got some comment about the upstream choices: * Isn't it also a few people that looks for videos on remote servers? That argument is completely false since they used the same counter- argument at the end: for the benefit of a few. * What do they mean a few? because their mother tong is English, they don't use subtitles? What about the other people on the planet that doesn't speak English (or not enough to understand it without subtitles). They're just a few, that's it? * What about the culture? 2008/9/24 Mark Shuttleworth [EMAIL PROTECTED] No, if we want to use the Firefox brand, then we must work with Mozilla, and that's reasonable. If we don't want to use the brand, they have kindly given us lots of rights to the code they have so lovingly produced. I do more and more agree with you Mark. A company has the right to preserve its image (aka brand, logo, ...). I just wonder why Debian created Iceweasel then? I know Debian are real zealots about the free software, but I also trust them on this subject. So I'm a bit confuse here... Maybe I'm wrong, but I understood that they did few Debian-specific modifications. But as long as they modified Firefox, they can't reuse the name. If I'm right until then, why don't they send their modifications to Mozilla? Mozilla refused? Imagine you have an Ubuntu-specific feature to add to Firefox. Mozilla doesn't want it for some reason... What's your choice? Abandon your modification or change the name? Re: [Bug 269656] Re: AN IRRELEVANT LICENSE IS PRESENTED TO YOU FREE-OF-CHARGE ON STARTUP
Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Let's imagine we're *not* talking about Google and Mozilla. I definitely won't trust an Open Source software that is offered to me with a pre-accepted EULA. The reason is simple: it's only about trust. W'e ve seen, more than once, companies that suddenly made their patented technology into profit (GIF, JPG, MP3, ...). Thus as long as the company doesn't write clearly that it will keep its technology free as in freedom, we can consider it potentially closed. So, even if I trust Google and even more Mozilla, I still want to be reassured that what I'm using will not be suddenly shutdown or not free (as in beer). And the only way to do that is to have a compatible free software license [1]. Simple as that! That said, if the services are disabled by default but that the first Firefox page advices me to enable them. As far as I trust Ubuntu and that I know Canonical point of view about freedom, I'll do it! But this way I don't have the impression that someone is twisting my arm. Re: [Bug 269656] Re: AN IRRELEVANT LICENSE IS PRESENTED TO YOU FREE-OF-CHARGE ON STARTUP
I don't see any difference between asking my ISP non-free router's operating system where should my data go and asking non-free Google/Mozilla if some website is 'phishing'. The difference is that my ISP isn't pretending to be free. It can use free software as much as it wants to, but its services doesn't become instantly free. Thus the main difference is that I can use non-free softwares or services when I want and where I want, that's my freedom. But a software can't pretend to be free (as in freedom) if it has non-free parts in it that can't be removed by the user because eventually the user don't have the choice. -- AN IRRELEVANT LICENSE IS PRESENTED TO YOU FREE-OF-CHARGE ON STARTUP https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/269656 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 269656] Re: AN IRRELEVANT LICENSE IS PRESENTED TO YOU FREE-OF-CHARGE ON STARTUP
The solutions presented here by Mozilla seems definitely better! I might have missed something important, so please correct me if I'm wrong. I wonder about the non-free status of the Firefox binary. As everyone said, considering the Ubuntu code, only free binaries have the right to be in the main repository. So what for Firefox? I also wonder about the motivations of Mozilla to build a closed binary? Their web services really can't be opened? If I understood well, the AGPL licence is maid to ensure web services' openness. I don't know for you, but all this non-free stuff about Firefox strongly reminds me the XFree86 project that didn't want to hear the opinion of those zealots. Sorry to add another comment to this already too long list... I'd just say two things. - If I went to Ubuntu (after have been on Debian for some years), it's because it seems to respect the Free (as in Freedom) philosophy. This kind of agreement between Mozilla and Ubuntu is clearly against this philosophy. - If Ubuntu accepts this from Mozilla, what prevents other projects to do the same. I tried installing manually the 169.04, 169.07, 169.09 and 171.06 versions. The problem is still the same: it just can't read EDID and then falls back to the ugly 640x480 resolution. I also tried forcing the resolution with a modeline as recommended here: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HARDWARE_AL2216W But it was even worst, the refresh rates are completely messing up the display (the resolution is still something like 640x480, but it's also horizontally shifted). It seems like it's not the nvidia driver, but more the last xorg update that has broken the EDID module. (Maybe it's my monitor or my graphic card that is broken, but I hardly believe that only the EDID module would crash if there was a hardware problem, in any case, if someone has an Acer AL2216W monitor running on the last Ubuntu 8.04 beta, please say it here!) ** Attachment added: Xorg.0.log -- log with the 171.06 nvidia driver http://launchpadlibrarian.net/12826132/Xorg.0.log -- [Hardy] Screen detection problems with xorg, nvidia and an Acer AL2216W https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/205093 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 205093] [NEW] [Hardy] Screen detection problems with xorg, nvidia and an Acer AL2216W
Public bug reported: It makes now almost 6 years that I'm on Linux, and I can say that I never had such problems with nvidia/xorg and my screen until now. Even though I had some really hard one back on my old Debian and all the kernel recompilation stuff. That was just to say that, even if I'm not an expert, I know few stuff about how to get my screen recognized by the xserver. But this time, it feels like the whole xorg/nvidia/acer combo is broken. This bug appears one week ago (after an update which included the xorg and linux kernel packages) and each day nights until then I tried to solve the problem, which I didn't have. So it's really my last chance here... To be sure it wasn't a complete mess in my configuration files that was the cause of this problem, I've just reinstalled a whole new Ubuntu 8.04 beta, freshly downloaded and burned. The result is the same: can't get my screen detected with nvidia driver enabled. It wouldn't be a real problem if the nv driver was capable of detecting wide resolution screens. I could wait until the next nvidia or xorg release. But here I'm writing on a 22 screen with a 1280x1024 resolution. Might as well say that I'm even considering to switch back to Windows (and I really don't want to!), but I need to work on my computer... Here is what I tried for now: The biggest resolution I can have with the nv driver is 1280x1024. The biggest resolution I can have with the nvidia driver is less than 640x480. Each time I tried a resolution above, the screen was displaying a completely wrong resolution (like taller than wider) and the screen was like vertically shifted down. I tried nvidia-settings to configure my xorg config file. I tried writing my own config file, with the appropriate modelines gathered from google searches. I tried configuring with the gnome-system-monitor app. Using preset generic screens (LCD Panel 1680x1050, LCD Panel 1920x1080, Monitor 1600x1200, and all with or without wide screen checked). I tried also adding a configured screen using the .inf file of my LCD (Acer AL2216W). I tried with generic or 386 version of the 2.6.24-11 and 2.6.24-12 kernels. I also tried to install the driver with the envyng app. I'm sure I tried other stuff, but I can't remember. At least I can say that I tried! :) It feels like the last nvidia driver or the last xorg release (or both) can't detect my screen anymore. Here is the packages installed: * linux-images-2.6.24-12-generic (v2.6.24-12.22) * xorg (v1:7.3+10ubuntu7) * nvidia-glx-new (v169.12+2.6.24.11-12.31) (I repeat, this is a freshly new installation from this morning, so I don't have 10 different configs that could be in conflict anymore, but the result is the same) I'll attach my xorg.conf, and the other I tried and the xorg log. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- [Hardy] Screen detection problems with xorg, nvidia and an Acer AL2216W https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/205093 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hi! I've already answered on the other bug report (#200160) and seen that it was a duplicate. Exactly the same here. First scim has the same problems as its equivalent in Windows. Problems which has the power to drive me crazy and that I was glad to let aside by running on Linux. It's clearly not a step forward to me. Fortunately, I could remove it. Which I did and since I can't write accentuated letters as Zenigata said (who I thank by the way, I didn't know the AltGr+key shortcuts). Hope it'll be fixed shortly, it's really annoying. But Ubuntu is still the best! [Bug 195035] [NEW] rhythmbox won't play a specific track if crossfading is activated
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: rhythmbox I've ripped the last White Stripes album (Icky Thump) in Ogg (quality=0.6). The first track won't play in rhythmbox if crossfading is activated (0.0s, fade between tracks of the same album, 256Ko). It works like a charm if it isn't. I can give you the file if you ask me, but I'm not sure it's a good idea to attach it here :) I haven't tested on another computer, but the bug is reproducible at 100% here. If someone can, at least, try at his place, that'd be great! Public bug reported: Binary package hint: totem I'm sure few weeks ago totam could load subtitles, but since last update apparently it doesn't anymore.
