[Bug 1247189] Re: [13.10] Ubuntu freezes completely when switching user

2013-12-28 Thread Daniel
I am experiencing this issue since I upgraded to 13.10 from 13.04.
No nVidia card but Intel:
Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics
Controller [8086:0116] (rev 09)

The system does not hang. From my experience it just get stuck trying to open a
new VT.
It fails to switch to the Greeter and a black screen is shown, but you can go
back to your previous VT (CTRL-ALT-F7) or to a new one (e.g. tty1).

Versions:
lightdm 1.8.4-0ubuntu1  amd64
kernel 3.11.0-14-generic
All packages up-to-date as of 20131228.1000-UTC

WORKAROUND:
The problem solved after updating lightdm to version 1.8.5-0ubuntu1, available
in saucy-proposed repository.

After the lightdm upgrade I experience some performance issues related
to plugin xfce4-xkb-plugin when switching between users. Seem to be
resolved removing the plugin from all panels.

[Bug 1261129] [NEW] [SVF13N1L2ES] keyboard and touchpad do not work after resume from suspend

2013-12-15 Thread Daniel
Public bug reported:

This has happened for the first time now, all previous cycles had no problems.
Will update report with info on frequency of issue. Not working means that
laptop shows no response to keypresses or touchpad use. No response to hotkeys
either (i.e. Fn-x presses). Volume rocker at the side of the laptop doesn't
work either. However, touchscreen and digitizer continue to work.
A second suspend-resume fixes the issue. I'm attaching a dmesg log from after
the second resume.

apt-get install wine1.4
  The following packages have unmet dependencies:
   wine1.4 : Depends: wine1.4-i386 (= 1.4.1-0ubuntu5) but it is not installable

Exact problem:

* wine depends on wine1.4
 * (not relevant:) wine1.4 (i386 version) only depends on wine1.4-i386
 * wine1.4 (amd64 version) depends on both wine1.4-amd64 and wine1.4-i386
  * wine1.4-amd64 is available
  * wine1.4-i386 is only available for i386, but is also needed by wine1.4
(amd64 version)

Is this the way that each Ubuntu user should go? I never saw this command
before and I think it should not be necessary for packages from the universe
repository.

> Note that this is not the same issue described in this bug report.
probably. But I think the 'solution' of this bug is the origin of my issue.
Your efforts to solve the bug are responsible that wine cannot be installed
anymore on amd64

[Bug 1227838] Re: gthumb doesn't display thumbnails correctly on UG 13.10 + Gnome 3.10

>"Hi,
>Tested with the W8 test ppa. I do confirm gThumb 3.2.3 works well with UG
>13.10 + Gnome 3.10."

Hi, @Romuald (romu70)! Sorry, maybe a stupid question, but where did you
get gThumb 3.2.3? In this W8 ppa
(https://launchpad.net/~nilarimogard/+archive/webupd8/+index?batch=75&memo=75&start=75)
I can only find packages for Ubuntu until 13.04
(3:3.1.2-0~webupd8~raring2).

This W8 test ppa (comment #7) seems to be deprecated and also does not contain
any gThumb package.
Thanks for help!

[Bug 1378592] [NEW] i3-wm floating child dialogs mess up global fullscreen windows

2014-10-07 Thread Daniel
Public bug reported:

When I have windows in full-screen mode, if they open up child floating
views (like dialogs), these appear over the fullscreen window, which
seems like the correct user experience.

However, when I am in global fullscreen, the child dialogs seem to cause
an issue, because the window that is globally fullscreen in no longer in
focus (I can't focus on it either, no click or keyboard events go
through), but I cannot see the child window. I have to toggle the
global fullscreen to see the child window, which is then in fullscreen
as well.

It seems like the child dialog/window has the focus, but it is not
displayed correctly.

RESEARCH

I tried to find information about fs/nfsfs which looks like a file
system driver, but even google didn't find a result for this. I know nfs
(the network protocol) but it is not in use on my system.

FURTHER INFORMATION

- My video card is a Hauppauge HVR-1300. This device already made problems in
the past, but these problems were about startup and initializing.
- The only one connection which I see between these two application are audio
and probably direct graphics output. For audio I would expect some helpful log
messages, but there is not more information than the kernel stack trace and the
i2c message.
- I think there is somthing in the initialization sequence of chromium. First I
thought it's the pepper flash plugin but I have the same problem when I remove
the plugin.

[Bug 1341562] Re: indicator-printers not working on Ubuntu 14.04

2014-09-28 Thread Daniel
I would like to add that this can not be just 7 users. I run a small PC
support business and have several people on Ubuntu 14.04.1 and all have
this problem (including me).

[Bug 600631] Re: Password does not unlock screen

2014-08-15 Thread Daniel
I know this is an old thread, however this has just happened to me on ubuntu
14.04, I had not made any change to /etc/shadow myself, and this is a fairly
clean/new install. I came across this bug directed from here
http://askubuntu.com/questions/128785/lock-screen-password-incorrect
so this seems to be a common occurrence - is it worth reopening this and
investigating why the permissions on /etc/shadow keep changing?

[Bug 1312787] Re: "error: symbol 'grub_term_highlight_color' not found" in Ubuntu 14.04

2014-09-17 Thread Daniel
This bug did effect me as well.

After upgrading from 13.10 to 14.04 grub was broken and showed a »symbol
'grub_term_highlight_color' not found« error.

Tried all tipps from the original bug report (Boot Repair, dpkg-reconfigure,
grub-install in several variations):
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/1289977

I have a »Packard Bell imedia S - DT.U7HEG.037«. Boot Repair Log:
http://paste.ubuntu.com/7738222/

The system is using EFI, as stated above by Gabriel, .efi files are
located at all kind of places and Ubuntu/Grub picks the wrong one.

Found a solution on askubuntu and then stumbled upon this ticket:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/449680/upgrading-from-13-10-to-14-04-broke-grub/476765#476765
* Boot using »Super Grub« CD
* Copy the existing, correct Boot EFI file to the location which Ubuntu/Grub is
actually using: »sudo cp /mnt/EFI/ubuntu/grubx64.efi /mnt/EFI/Boot/bootx64.efi«

2015-05-04 Thread Daniel
@matv1
The above workaround works for me as well at FU Berlin.
But I may not have to mention the disadvantages of cleartype passwords in
config-files ;)
Looking forward to see the gui for this soon.
Thank you very much for this though.

Ok, my fault. No write permission for the group.

But anyway, I think there is no reason to not use both nosuid and noexec

[Bug 1450960] Re: dev file system is mounted without noexec

2015-05-04 Thread Daniel
That's not really true. On my system for example, the directory
/dev/vboxusb/ exists with permissions

drwxr-x--- 4 root vboxusers 80 Mai  4 09:09 /dev/vboxusb/

So all users which are in group vboxusers can write to this sub-
directory. I'm sure there are more cases like this...

[Bug 1284308] Re: Bogus "another operation in progress" error. Can't copy files from a bluetooth device

2014-05-16 Thread Daniel
Having this issue when connecting to a Nokia 6500. Additional
observations: I can, for example, open the pictures on my phone using
eog just fine. Also, when I use the shell to copy them from under

[Bug 34813] Re: gedit fails to save files over smbfs/cifs

2014-04-17 Thread Daniel
The problem still exists in Ubuntu 13.10 (Linux 3.11.0-20-generic
x86_64) with gedit 3.8.3-0ubuntu3

My fstab:
//ourserver.local/myshare   /mnt/mymount   cifs
uid=1001,file_mode=0600,dir_mode=0700,credentials=/myhome/.smbcredentials,iocharset=utf8,sec=ntlm,nounix
   0 0

I found an interesting link which assumes that the reason is a time-
synchronization problem:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-495454-start-0.html#3567475. This
makes sense since our NAS is a Netgear ReadyNAS with a time drift of
~20s per day and NTP doesn't seem to work on it. Latter means that I
cannot do any serious tests on it.

[Bug 1310855] [NEW] Bash Smart Completion expands to one file instead of all when using whildcards

2014-04-21 Thread Daniel
Public bug reported:

Using Bash Smart Completion, I found that sometimes when I use wildcards
and then press tab, not all existing files are consideres for expansion
but only the first one. This is a very dangerous behaviour because
people tend to think there is only one file matching the pattern.

Steps to reproduce (bash shell with smart completion enabled):

1. Create files a.x and b.x
$ touch a.x
$ touch b.x
2. Enter "ls *x" (without quotes)
3. Press tab
4.
Expected: Shell doesn't expand because there are two files matching the
pattern
Instead, the shell expands to "ls a.x"

Shell 'screenshot', to show the difference:

$ # smart completion is enabled
$ touch a.x # create test files
$ touch b.x
$ ls *.x
$ ls a.x  # shell expanded *.x to a.x

You can simply reproduce the expected behavoiur when you disable smart
completion:

$ complete -r  #disable smart completion
$ touch a.x # create test files
$ touch b.x
$ ls *.x
a.x  b.x
$ ls *.x

My System:

[Bug 1004197] Re: Opening new server opens to black the first time

2014-04-04 Thread Daniel
Similar problem in my installation (1.0.0-4ubuntu3): After connecting I
often only have a blank window with toolbar. It took a while to realize
that the session is there, but I need to resize the window. change its
width by 1 pixel is enough to make the session visible. The "1" button
doesn't work for me: It sets the correct width but double the height of
was is necessary. If I click again the height is again doubled and the
session itself is displayed outside of the range of my physical screen.
I attached a collage of screenshots.

[Bug 1061037] Re: Using .xpm icons on desktop may draw huge icon

2013-04-26 Thread Daniel
Same problem with Xubuntu on raring (13.04, also with the eclipse icon.xpm).
Previously I used 12.04 and everything was ok.
If I convert it to a .png using GIMP, everything looks fine.

[Bug 1406945] [NEW] Difference between lxc autostart from init script and manual lxc-start call

2015-01-01 Thread Daniel
Public bug reported:

According to
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lxc/+question/255408, there
seem to be a difference between `lxc start` and the autostart feature
lxc.start.auto.

On my Ubuntu 14.10, I have problem starting up containers manually, but
autostarting the same containers works without problems. I cannot see a
difference, the file /etc/init/lxc-instance.conf is very simple and
doesn't set any important additional environment variables.

The log output is as follows

ah i see. How do i fix it? Right now, after the last update, whenever I
boot I get a blank screen (i don't even get to the login screen). Seems
like my graphics drivers are all messed up.

Re: [Bug 1046258] Re: Certain applications ignore default locale character set

2014-07-31 Thread Daniel
I'm not sure whether I ever totally figured it out, but I found a fix that
works for me: I created a personalized ".XCompose" file in my /home
directory in which I replaced every "ć" I could find with a "ç". Strangely
some programmes wouldn't accept the new key combinations until I changed
"Language Support > Keyboard Input method system" from "ibus" to "none".
I'm not sure what the relationship is, if there is one, or if after that
point the dissident applications accepted my key combinations or reverted
to some other default, but since making those two changes I've had no
further problems.

[Bug 1218973] Re: [Dell XPS 12-9Q33] Touchpad not recognized

2014-02-01 Thread Daniel
C. Loose's kernel works for me (yay for two-finger scolling)!

$ xinput
⎡ Virtual core pointer  id=2[master pointer  (3)]
⎜   ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointerid=4[slave  pointer  (2)]
⎜   ↳ ATML1000:00 03EB:842F id=10   [slave  pointer  (2)]
⎜   ↳ Synaptics RMI4 TouchPad Sensorid=12   [slave  pointer  (2)]

C. Loose, you mentioned the track pad is no longer disabled when the screen is
flipped. This actually never worked for me on 13.10 on 3.11 before or after
being upgraded.

One quirk I have notice with this patch: When I click-to-drag, clicking
with one finger and dragging with another no longer functions. Instead,
I must move the same finger I depress the trackpad with to drag. Is
anyone else experiencing this?

[Bug 1276464] [NEW] evolution-ews missing dependency to gnome-keyring

2014-02-05 Thread Daniel
Public bug reported:

The Evolution EWS plugin is not able to work without gnome-keyring-
daemon running. But evolution-ews (3.8.4-0ubuntu1) has no dependency to
the package gnome-keyring.

In my case, I wasn't able to use evolution-ews until I found this link:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1278922

Problem without gnome-keyring being installed is as described:
Evolutions gets stuck after clicking "fetch url" with the message
"Querying autodiscover service". And after this, Evolution is not able
to terminate itself anymore.

$ lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:Ubuntu 13.10
Release:13.10
Codename:   saucy

$ uname -a
Linux 3.11.0-17-generic #30-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 17 22:26:34 UTC 2014 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Working configuration (after installing gnome-keyring):

Package: evolution-ews
Status: install ok installed
Version: 3.8.4-0ubuntu1

Package: evolution
Status: install ok installed
Version: 3.8.4-0ubuntu1

Package: gnome-keyring
