[Bug 787341] [NEW] Screensaver won't exit

2011-05-23 Thread Daedalus Prime
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: acpi

I came back to my computer while the screensaver was running, moved the
mouse, and was prompted for my password. Then after entering my
password, the screensaver came back on and neither mouse movement nor
keystrokes would stop it. I was able to CTL-ALT-F2 to bring up a
console. I ran dmesg and noticed the following near the end:

[ 39.684336] Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 128x48
[ 39.684363] fb0: inteldrmfb frame buffer device

Could that last line be a clue? How do I fix it?

[Bug 778283] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2011-05-05 Thread Daedalus Prime
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

After upgrading to natty, the screen saver freezes frequently.
Sometimes I can get a terminal with CTL-ALT-Fx, but other times it
requires a power cycle to recover. Browsing the log files, I noticed
the following 2 messages repeated every 1-2 seconds at the time of the
hang:

May 5 17:45:17 david-laptop kernel: [73747.356256]
[drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU hung
May 5 17:45:17 david-laptop kernel: [73747.356266] [drm:kick_ring] *ERROR*
Kicking stuck wait on render ring

Note that I was also having severe problems with Unity so have switched
to Classic, which is mostly usable

[Bug 732304] Re: [sandybridge-gt2+] Intel sandy-bridge dual-head GPU hang

2011-05-03 Thread Daedalus Prime
I am seeing something similar with the released 11.04 distribution. The
symptom is that I'll leave the computer running and when I come back it
is hung, either with a black screen or a frozen screensaver. The only
way I have found to recover is a power cycle. Browsing the logs, I see
the following two lines repeated every 1-2 seconds:

May 3 12:48:24 david-laptop kernel: [54980.004156]
[drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU hung
May 3 12:48:24 david-laptop kernel: [54980.004165] [drm:kick_ring] *ERROR*
Kicking stuck wait on render ring

Does this sound like the same bug or something new?

[Bug 499530] [NEW] Compiz randomly lockups

2009-12-22 Thread Daedalus
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

Hi! I have problem with Compiz Fusion on my Acer Aspire One AOA150 with
Linux Mint 8 Helena. Same problem experienced on Linux Mint 7 Gloria.
System randomly lockup then I use Compiz Fusion effects. It’s no matter
– extra or standart effects, it’s lock all system. No reaction on mouse
clicks or pressing keys on keyboard. But if I press Alt+F2 or something
system hot key, system starts responding and I can see all actions that
I perform previously. Next freeze may repeat for minutes or I may work
without any problem hours, days… Then I disable Compiz I don’t have any
lockups.

[Bug 292145] [NEW] Kopete: Syntek webcam still turned on after configuration

2008-11-01 Thread Daedalus
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kopete

Hello,
I have a Asus Pro-50VL, with Kubuntu Intrepid and this webcam (according to
lsusb):

Bus 003 Device 002: ID 05e1:0501 Syntek Semiconductor Co., Ltd WebCam,
Chipset DC-1125 similar to 174f:a311 - Asus F2F, F2J, F3J, F3T, G1,
Z53JA

Well, it works with Kopete, with some color alterations, but I wish to
notice another thing:

if you go in Configuration, the webcam led turns on, because webcam is
initialized. But, when you quit configuration window, or Kopete also,
the led is still on!

"modprobe -r stkwebcam" did nothing.

I report "lsusb -v" output about webcam:

[Bug 223108] Re: Wine black screen

2008-07-14 Thread Daedalus
I have a strange problem in wine that gives me weird resolution... I'm going to
signal it in Launchpad, but I think it could be also related to these "black
screen" bugreports.
Well, I have resolved by adding this to the end of /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

Section "ServerFlags"
Option "AIGLX" "off"
EndSection

Looks like there is a conflict between wine applications that required a
direct-something library and AIGLX.

Let me see if you can resolve by this.

[Bug 41746] Re: dapper kernel fails to do smp on pentium-d viiv

2008-06-20 Thread Daedalus
I write here because I encountered a bug that is very similar, or even
identical...

I can confirm the same behaviour with 2.6.24-19-386 (hardy-proposed) on
a Core2Duo processor, and the curious thing is the output of uname -a:

on this kernel:
Linux kubuntu 2.6.24-19-386 #1 Wed Jun 4 15:54:02 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

where uname -a on 2.6.24-19-generic or 2.6.24-19-rt reports:
Linux kubuntu 2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP Wed Jun 4 16:35:01 UTC 2008 i686
GNU/Linux

Like 386 kernel has no SMP support...

I think it is not possible to install a 686 kernel anymore: in Synaptic
the related package (linux-image-686) has this description "Upgrade
dummy package. Can be removed" and there are no 686 kernels in Hardy
repos.

[Bug 210308] Re: Bootsplash not getting shown in hardy, ATI Radeon x2300

2008-06-04 Thread Daedalus
Hi David,
you don't have a black screen, right? I read:

[quote]
I see the bouncing bar when the system starts up, it disappears just when it
should start to progress across the screen and instead I see the services and
daemons being loaded and started.
[/quote]

So, If I have understood well, you have the bouncing bar and, instead to have
the progression you have the text-mode loading, right?
If it is so, it's not a bug -- it's because there is a warning message during
the boot.

Maybe the behaviour during your pc shutdown is much likely to be related
of this bug.

When you are logged in, try CTRL+ALT+F1: if you can see the text-mode
login screen, you don't have problems (or better, your problems are not
related to this bugreport). If you have nothing but a black screen, we
are talking about the same bug. (then press ALT+F7 to return to X
session)

Just now I have realized that it is necessary to run update-initramfs to

David Vincent: try a working resolution that I have listed above, then,
after you have edited /etc/usplash.conf, run

$ sudo update-initramfs -u

then reboot and let us know what happens.

[Bug 235815] [NEW] Windows Live Spaces: strange behaviour using Mozilla Firefox

2008-05-29 Thread Daedalus
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

I have many oddities and error messages when I use and modify my personal page
on Windows Live Spaces with Firefox. This happens both on Windows and on Linux.
I have done some tests: I tried to create a blog article on:

Windows - IE7: no problem
Windows - FF3: I have many errors, including: "service unavailable" messages
after tried to publish an article, duplicated entries (because, besides the
error message, the article is published... 2-3 times!), duplicated comments,
"not retreiving contents" messages when I try to delete duplicated entries (but
it works, nevertheless the message), etc

Linux - VirtualBox environment with Windows and IE7: no problem
Linux - FF3: same as above
Linux - Konqueror: it works!! Even if some Spaces functions are missing or not
loaded correctly (i.e. the text editing bar).

I haven't tried Konqueror for KDE4 because I can't connect with it.

Can you confirm this and/or try to use other browsers?

I'm going to attach screenshots of my tests

2008-05-11 Thread Daedalus

/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-16-386 root=UUID=560308fe-21ef-47bf-
aff1-a91797394b47 ro quiet splash locale=it_IT

apt-cache show usplash

Version: 0.5.19

/etc/usplash.conf

xres=1280
yres=1024

I have done "sudo dpkg-reconfigure usplash" as you mentioned above, but with no
results.
I tried to tweak /etc/usplash.conf using 1024x768 and 800x600 and, with these
settings, I have a 2-second bootsplash in the final part of reboot/shutdown.
Nothing during system boot.

Thinking for a problem about fglrx (because it seems it appears only
with ATI cards) I tried to switch to vesa driver, but with no results.

If I remember well, I had this problem when I updated a fresh Gutsy
installation... might it be an issue related to kernel settings?

If you can confirm this, this bug might be considered as medium or high

In Medibuntu repositories there are ffmpeg and libraries debs with proprietary

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: desktop-effects-kde

If you have installed Compiz and you try to set a profile (standard effects,
extra effects, custom effects), it simply won't work.
If you run desktop-effects-kde4 from shell, the error message is this:
-
apply clicked

Traceback (most recent call last):

IOError: [Errno 13] Permesso negato:
'/home/deda/.config/compiz/compizconfig/Default.ini'

in Italian, "permesso negato" means "permission denied".

Of course, if you run "sudo desktop-effects-kde4", everything goes ok.

So, there are 2 solutions:
- configuration files could be modified by user
- desktop-effects-kde4 should run with root privileges (IMHO better).

[Bug 190516] Re: MUGEN doesn't start if Apparmor is running

2008-03-12 Thread Daedalus
Ok, I have upgraded to Hardy Alpha6 (kernel 2.6.24-12-386), this bug still
persists.
Come on guys, there is someone that could download MUGEN and try to run it
using apparmor profiles? And that could set this bug as "confirmed" or
"invalid" or something different than "incomplete"?? :-)

Confirmed with Ati-fglrx.
By the way, have you ever tried to move the panel to left or to right side of
the desktop? Aren't plasmoids' positions weird? Maybe plasmoids in the panel
should rotate too.

[Bug 190516] Re: MUGEN doesn't start if Apparmor is running

2008-02-13 Thread Daedalus
Well, I don't remember well which kernel version I used, because for another
reason I had to format and reinstall Gutsy. It was, however, the Hardy alpha 4
kernel for 386 (2.6.24-something-386...).
In the link mentioned above there are all log entries. I'll write here briefly:

I have created a profile for MUGEN (it is, in my case, in /home/deda/mugen)
and I have monitored /var/log/messages and /var/log/syslog (it seems that
entries related to apparmor are same).

I started MUGEN, ok it doesn't work.

Here is /var/log/syslog output:

Feb 6 15:22:45 kubuntu kernel: [ 1725.519674] audit(1202307765.222:6):

profile="/home/deda/mugen/mugen" namespace="default"
[ 1726.005974] AppArmor: aa_register: Failed to get filename

So I modified /etc/apparmor.d/home.deda.mugen.mugen (the profile):

#include
/home/deda/mugen/mugen {
  #include

  /home/deda/mugen/** rwUx,
  /tmp/** rwUx,
}

I restarted Apparmor, and tried to restart MUGEN. Now the only entry in
var/log/syslog is:

Feb 6 21:20:57 kubuntu kernel: [ 1606.641929] audit(1202329257.493:13):
operation="inode_permission" request_mask="Ux::" denied_mask="Ux::"
pid=11770 profile="/home/deda/mugen/mugen" namespace="default"

Stranger than before, there is no "name" field.

At the end, I tried modifying /etc/apparmor.d/home.deda.mugen.mugen this
way:

#include
/home/deda/mugen/mugen {
# #include

/** rwUx,
}

but the error still persists.

If you need to know other log entries I am here, but keep in
consideration that I am using Gutsy kernel now (2.6.22-14-386).

[Bug 190516] [NEW] MUGEN doesn't start if Apparmor is running

2008-02-09 Thread Daedalus
Public bug reported:

Hi there,
I'm talking about a closed-source 2d fighting game, however I want to submit
this "bug" (if it is a bug) because I saw that Apparmor is compiled into the
kernel in Hardy.

For now, it seems that the only way to run MUGEN is to kill apparmor, that is
not possible in Hardy. Just stopping Apparmor is not enough.
I tried to create a profile for it: you can read the entire process, with all
error messages encountered, here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=688655

As you can read, the strange thing is that MUGEN doesn't run even with
"Ux" permission into the entire filesystem!

[Bug 185433] Re: atheros wifi broken with gutsy update [madwifi]

2008-01-30 Thread Daedalus
Same here, either with Hardy.
BTW, which atheros card are you talking about? Mine is a AR5006EG (or a AR5007,
maybe it is badly recognized).
Works (but quite bad, sometimes connection hangs up) with ndiswrapper.

There is a patch on madwifi's site for my wifi card:
http://madwifi.org/ticket/1679
I don't know if it is already integrated in Ubuntu.

Cheers.

[Bug 155863] Re: Ctrl-X Ctrl-V doesn't work between Konqueror (the desktop) and KDE3 Dolphin

2008-01-23 Thread Daedalus
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 136695 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/136695

It's a duplicate of bug #136695. For the severity, we think (I and the others
that posted comments in bug described before) that it might be set to medium,
because:
- a so evident bug cannot be in the default file manager and it could damage
the trust in Ubuntu.
- if people thinks to move their files, but they are just coping them, this bug
can be a security issue. We must keep in consideration that not so many people
are able to use a shell session or even to change the default filemanager.

However, it is fixed in Dolphin-KDE4. So I set this bug as duplicate
because it is proved that it's a bug of Dolphin. Hope this helps :)

2008-01-22 Thread Daedalus
I can confirm: fixed in Dolphin-KDE4.
However, I fully agree with Christoph: it might reveals a security issue,
without taking in consideration that a file manager with a so evident bug can't
be the default choice
So, we need someone that takes the lead and fix this. (don't look at me, I'm
not a programmer :) )

[Bug 184807] Re: KDE 4 uses too much ram!

2008-01-21 Thread Daedalus
Thanks for the explanation :)
Really, it is as you said: on 600 MB, 350 are cached memory. This is not
distinguished from real memory in top nor in ksysguard (for kde3). but it is
distinguished in gkrellm and ksysguard-kde4.
Gasp, Akregator uses 10 MB of RAM!!! :)
I have tried to compare ram usage between KDE4 and KDE3 with Compiz. Ok, it
seems that KDE4 uses 80 MB much than KDE3. I think it is because in KDE4 it is
necessary to load QT3 libraries yet, infact we still need to use programs
compiled for KDE3

So, false alarm... sorry for the waste of time and for my bad english :
I'm going to set this bug as invalid.

Thanks anyway!

[Bug 184807] KDE 4 uses too much ram!

2008-01-21 Thread Daedalus
Public bug reported:

I have read that KDE4 uses less ram than KDE3, but it is not my case :-(
In my case, KDE4 can use from 500 to 900 MB of ram... sorry if I am generic
about this, but I have no idea about what is the bugged component (if there is
any).
It might be knotify4 (why uses 200 MB and more?)
Or maybe Composite (xserver-xorg) + fglrx closed-source driver... but why I
don't have this huge amount of consumed ram when I use Compiz on KDE3?

I wasn't able to try other video drivers, because "ati" doesn't work on
a Mobility Radeon X1300, and with "vesa" I'm not able to run KDE4. Maybe
this helps...

[Bug 136695] Re: Cutting and pasting files with Dolphin does not work properly

2007-12-07 Thread Daedalus
I have done some tests:

if you move a file by drag-and-drop and using "move here", all works correctly.
If you do the same via CTRL+X (or right click -> cut) and CTRL+V (or right
click -> paste), there are 2 situations:

- if it is done in THE SAME dolphin window, all goes ok
- if it is done in ANOTHER dolphin window (or in/from the desktop), so there is
the bug.

Hope this helps. By the way, I have read that KDE4 Dolphin is quite
different from the KDE3 one.
