[Bug 201493] Re: nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV in free()

2008-04-27 Thread Daniele Sapino
Final release update:

Now everything seems to work just fine, I managed to remove the
partitions with the underscore with a "sudo rm /media/partitionname_"
while the external hd was unplugged, then I plugged it with no more
problems... Thanks guys!

[Bug 201493] Re: nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV in free()

2008-04-05 Thread Daniele Sapino
After this morning update (tried yesterday late in the evening and it
did not work, so it is this morning) there is some consistent
improvement:

-Plugging the HD it is recognized, mounted, and Nautilus manages to show
the contents without crashing.

-The partition name shown on the desktop icon is right but the address
bar says partitonname__ with two underscores (one more than before)
instead of just partitionname

-'ls /media/' returns the following:
cdrom cdrom0 ntfspatition ntfspartition_ ntfspartition__ ext3partition
ext3partition_ ext3partition__
where only the entries with the double underscore are actually accessible, the
ones with no underscore are shown as empty ('ls' does not return anything) and
the ones with one underscore only are 'access denied' (even as root).

Needless to say that there are just two partitions on the disk and they
are the ones without underscores.

[Bug 201243] Re: Nautilus doesn't show partition on USB drive, instead diplays home or crashes everything

2008-03-12 Thread Daniele Sapino
Here is the file. But there's something odd about it: in order to
prevent "contaminations" I have moved the .xsession-errors I had to
another folder, then I caused the bug to occur. The result is that it
never creates any new .xsession-errors after the crash, so I don't know
if the original one contains anything useful either. I'm posting it
anyway, I hope that I have not compromised the results myself with this
initiative of mine.

Another thing, I have switched on the drive right after the log in,
everything went as usual but this time it crashed properly and I had an
automated bug report option. I filed it as bug #201493 because I did not
know how to attach it to this same report. I hope it helps.

Thanks.

[Bug 201243] [NEW] Nautilus doesn't show partition on USB drive, instead diplays home or crashes everything

2008-03-11 Thread Daniele Sapino
Public bug reported:

Set-up:
-Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop
-Ubuntu Hardy Heron updated 11/03/2008 h19.00 GMT
-LaCie 300 Gb USB drive partioned 120Gb NTFS, 180Gb ext3

When I plug the USB drive, the partitions are mounted normally and
Nautilus automatically pops up to show the contents. Here the problems
start:

a) No "import photo" pop-up shows albeit there are lots of photos on the ext3
partiton. Minor annoyance, I never use it anyhow.
b) Nautilus shows up, tries to display the content of the partition but fails,
shows home instead. Alternatively it freezes everything and I am forced to shut
down drastically and reboot. Same if I try to open Nautilus manually, and I
cannot understand what makes it freeze rather than display home, it seems
random.

I am suggesting a Nautilus problem because from the CLI the drive is perfectly
accessible and works (I'm watching a movie from it right now). Everything else
seems fine (including the NTFS partition on the same USB drive) and with Gutsy
it worked flawlessly too.
Unfortunately either it doesn't crash or it completely locks everythng, so in
both cases there is no automatic information gathering to submit, nor do I know
where to look.

Please don't hesitate to contact me to require further details.

[Bug 138070] Re: Dell Inspiron 1520 no audio

2007-10-16 Thread Daniele Sapino
I have set up linux-backports-modules-generic and it works but I still
have the same problem as Jesus with the speakers that keep going after
plugging the headphones. I have noticed that if I turn on the computer
with the headphones plugged I get the contrary: headphones functioning
but no speakers not even when I umplug them. Practically it does not
"sense" the switch after reading it in the first place. However it's a
minor annoyance and with the reboot trick, albeit not ideal, you can
still avoid annoying people when you enjoy a movie on the train, kudos
the support team.

[Bug 138070] Re: Dell Inspiron 1520 no audio

2007-10-09 Thread Daniele Sapino
Hi folks,

I got it working but I'm not sure exactly how I did it (luck of the
beginner one might think). I found a piece of info on some forum saying
to enter the commands below from the CLI:

sudo apt-get install module-assistant
sudo m-a update
sudo m-a prepare
sudo m-a a-i alsa

I am very sorry but in the ordeal of copy+paste notes on possible
workarounds I can't find the original author to give him the credit he
deserves (that's not me anyway). I copy+pasted these entries in this
order and after restarting it worked.

I ran a couple of other scripts before (among the others the one
signalled by Jairo Serrano before in this topic) but none of them seemed
to work, however I don't exclude that in my disordinate tweaking I might
have touched something else without noticing so I am not really sure.

I just know that now I have a working sound. Please let me know if I
shall upload any log for your pleasure to look into some mess :).

[Bug 138070] Re: Dell Inspiron 1520 no audio

2007-10-05 Thread Daniele Sapino
Hi everybody,

Please forgive my n00bness but I have an oddity to report about this
issue on the Dell 1520 with intel audio card. When I boot from the
normal desktop Gutsy live cd, audio works partially : the loudspeakers
are mute but at least there is perfect output from the headphones jack.
On the contrary, after the installation not only the sound is completely
off but the audio card is not seen at all. I have been trying to import
brute force the settings from the live cd session to the regular one
but, provided it can be done, it seems beyond my skill.

It's a tiny bit of information but I hope it helps...

Keep in touch,

Daniele

P.S. I know many people says that on the 1520 you should use the
alternate cd, but I got everything else working from the standard one
out of the box.

[Bug 138277] Re: Gnome settings daemon doesn't work

2007-09-17 Thread Daniele Sapino
Hi folks,

After the updates of today, on stratup I get the same error as in the
screenshot originally posted by LCID fire. I tryed to restart the gnome
settings daemon from the console and got one of those error messages
(see below) mine differs for some number too but I guess it just varies
from machine to machine. Rebooting or relogging doesn't seem to help in
my case, it never loaded right in some ten attempts.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ gnome-settings-daemon
The program 'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 1388 error_code 2 request_code 147 minor_code 35)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
[1190057791,000,xklavier.c:xkl_engine_start_listen/]The backend does not
require manual layout management - but it is provided by the [EMAIL
PROTECTED]:~$

Thanks for the attention and good luck (sorry, I'm just a diplomathics
student, can't help further).

but when I press "start indexing" the demon seem to arrest after a
