[Bug 1865499] Re: pulseaudio doesn't detect (new) USB headset

2020-06-08 Thread David Fraser
I think I have the same problem. In the last week, my USB headset
(Microsoft LifeChat LX-3000) is often only recognized as an output, or
only recognized as an input, by PulseAudio. When checking with
alsamixer, it seems that Alsa recognizes both input and output, but
PulseAudio doesn't...

This does seem like a race condition in PulseAudio, so those Alsa
changes don't seem like what's caused my problem. How can I confirm if
this is the same problem as reported or a different one?

[Bug 1546704] [NEW] Error connecting to VPN disconnects WiFi

2016-02-17 Thread David Fraser
Public bug reported:

The WiFi Configuration page has an option "Automatically connect to VPN when
using this connection". This is useful.
However, if an error occurs connecting to the VPN, my Wifi Connection is then
automatically disconnected by Network Manager. This is frustrating and doesn't
match the description of the option. An error connecting to the VPN should not
disconnect the WiFi connection.

[Bug 1480120] [NEW] xfce4 panel plugin does not show anything

2015-07-31 Thread David Fraser
Public bug reported:

I installed workrave-xfce, and tried to add the workrave item to the panel.
However, it does not show anything. On adding a single workrave item, the icon
is grayed out so you cannot add any more, and the item in the panel items list
indicates Workrave (external) but nothing is displayed. If I remove the item
from the panel, the executable xfce4-workrave-plugin is still running as a
process.
Running on Ubuntu 14.04 i386, with workrave 1.10.6.0

[Bug 1298567] Re: Please sync Asunder from Debian sid

2015-06-22 Thread David Fraser
Note that Asunder 2.5 is now available in later releases of Ubuntu. For anyone
interested a PPA containing the latest Asunder 2.7 is available here:
https://launchpad.net/~mc3man/+archive/ubuntu/cdda1.
Asunder 2.5 fixes some significant freezing bugs
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/asunder/+bug/791463?comments=all) so
a backport of 2.5 to 14.04 would be helpful

2015-06-22 Thread David Fraser
Note that the Asunder changelog
(http://littlesvr.ca/asunder/releases/ChangeLog) notes hanging issues
being fixed in 2.5. I've run a test of Asunder 2.7 on Ubuntu 14.04 using
the PPA at https://launchpad.net/~mc3man/+archive/ubuntu/cdda1 - this

[Bug 1433999] [NEW] ripoff doesn't load any plugins

2015-03-19 Thread David Fraser
Public bug reported:

As of upgrading 14.04 I've had a problem with RipOff (i.e. 0.8.3). I get

No valid RipOff encoding plugin could be found

Under Preferences/Plugins the list of plugins is empty. The Preferences
and About buttons under the empty plugin list are greyed out

I ran ripoff under strace and noted that it searches
/usr/lib/ripoff/plugins and reads the first block of each file, but
doesn't seem to attempt to load the files.

(As a separate issue, ripoff-mp3-plugin puts its plugin at /usr/lib/i386
-linux-gnu/ripoff/plugins/liblame.so and that directory is not searched;
symlinking liblame.so from /usr/lib/ripoff/plugins doesn't get it loaded
though)

dpkg -l '*ripoff*'

[Bug 1305371] Re: [Dell Inspiron 1525] suspend/resume failure

2014-05-28 Thread David Fraser
Same problem - after upgrading from 12.04 to 14.04, suspend works but
resume shows completely black screen and requires a hard reboot. Initial
testing seems to show that killing pulseaudio and running rmmod
snd_hda_intel allows a successful suspend and resume.

I've been working on a script to suspend and resume pulseaudio; it
currently looks like this:

#!/bin/bash
case $1 in
suspend|hibernate)
echo module usage:
lsmod | grep ^snd_hda_intel
echo searching for pulseaudio sessions...
for p in /run/user/*/pulse/ ; do
ud=`dirname $p`
uid=`basename $ud`
echo unloading module for user $uid
sudo -u \#$uid PULSE_RUNTIME_PATH=$p -i pacmd
list-modules | grep -A1 'name: module-alsa-card' | grep 'argument:' | sed
's/^.*argument: \(.*\).*$/\1/' /var/run/pm-suspend-pa-alsa-arguments-$uid
sudo -u \#$uid PULSE_RUNTIME_PATH=$p -i pacmd
unload-module module-alsa-card
done
echo post-pulseaudio unload module usage:
lsmod | grep ^snd_hda_intel
rmmod snd_hda_intel
echo pre-suspend module usage:
lsmod | grep ^snd_hda_intel
echo hopefully ready to suspend
;;
resume|thaw)
echo resume module usage:
lsmod | grep ^snd_hda_intel
modprobe snd_hda_intel
echo post-modprobe module usage:
lsmod | grep ^snd_hda_intel
for p in /run/user/*/pulse/ ; do
ud=`dirname $p`
uid=`basename $ud`

arguments=`/var/run/pm-suspend-pa-alsa-arguments-$uid`
echo loading module for user $uid
sudo -u \#$uid PULSE_RUNTIME_PATH=$p -i pacmd
load-module module-alsa-card $arguments
done
echo post-pulseaudio load module usage:
lsmod | grep ^snd_hda_intel
;;
esac

[Bug 992582] Re: Unable to restore KeePassX after minimizing to tray

2012-07-06 Thread David Fraser
As noted on bug #842224, the easiest workaround in the mean time is to
add the following to ~/.config/sni-qt.conf:

[need-activate-action]
keepassx=1

In addition, if you have a window that has disappeared with changes to
the file, and you need to recover it, select Quit from the menu, then
Cancel when asked if you want to save changes - this will restore the
window.

[Bug 825041] [NEW] Dell Vostro 3700 kernel panic on suspend in 2.6.38-11.48

2011-08-12 Thread David Fraser
Public bug reported:

From kernel 2.6.38-11.48, suspend consistently produces a kernel panic on my
Dell Vostro 3700 (4/4 tests). Suspending in 2.6.38-10.46 and previous versions
works consistently.
I'm running in i386 using linux-image-generic-pae. I have the boot option
pcie_aspm=off to prevent problems suspending/resuming in battery mode (see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/656745)
In 2.6.38-11.48, the display goes back (seems to switch to text console) and
then the caps lock and num lock keys flash indicating the panic.

[Bug 820304] [NEW] xfce notification area icons judder/shake when pidgin flashes on message

2011-08-03 Thread David Fraser

[Bug 813904] [NEW] notifyosd shows repeated Don't show messages on connecting to WiFi on xfce

2011-07-20 Thread David Fraser
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 606825 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/606825

Public bug reported:

On Xfce, when a WiFi connection is established to my regular home
network, a message appears saying Connected to $networkname. Below
this there is a series of Don't show this message again buttons. It
seems as though each time the connection is established, an extra button
is added to the message (I have about eight or nine of them now). This
also happens when disconnecting

I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 with Xubuntu desktop packages installed, running
Xfce.

notify-osd is 0.9.30-0ubuntu4 - I presume this is what is displaying the
notifications?

Hmmm, but on natty, ubuntu-sugar-remix depends on sucrose-0.88, which as
of 0.88.1-4ubuntu1 in natty depends on sugar-log-activity-0.86, so I
can't install ubuntu-sugar-remix on natty :(

[Bug 526955] Re: NVIDIA X Server configuration not working

2011-05-04 Thread David Fraser
Re comment 6: I get this in Maverick too. I've found the advice in this forum
post helpful: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1047029
Basically you can use the command-line to tell nvidia-settings to reset which
displays are present. It then properly forgets about the old display and allows
you to use the dialog to detect the new one. I'm using the latest packaged
drivers (260.19.06-0ubuntu1)
Here's a short script that should reset to only using the laptop's local LCD:

#!/bin/bash
echo Current display status
nvidia-settings -d -q AssociatedDisplays
echo Configuring to only know about LCD display
nvidia-settings -a AssociatedDisplays=0x0001
echo Updated display status
nvidia-settings -d -q AssociatedDisplays

[Bug 644825] Re: screen unpredictably crashes

2011-02-23 Thread David Fraser
In #8, wrote:
I've had this occur a few times recently; I am using the default byobu
profile, on a 64-bit system with 4 GiB of RAM.

Each time the crash has occurred, I'm exiting vim when signed in from SSH,
and the vim/screen session was started from the local desktop.

The following line appears in dmesg:

I've also had this when exiting vim, but not from SSH; I had reattached
to an existing screen session. And I get a similar segfault message,
although I'm on 32-bit:

I'm curious as to why apport doesn't pick up this segfault and write a
core dump. Any ideas?

[Bug 697710] [NEW] [i965gm] GPU lockup 7a4d7a3b (crash on attaching external projector)

2011-01-05 Thread David Fraser
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I disconnected my external screen, suspended, resumed, attached an external
projector.
The machine immediately locked up (unresponsive to switching virtual terminal,
no network response) - before I'd tried to change the display configuration etc
This usually works fine, so I think it's an intermittent bug

[Bug 449394] Re: Huawei E220 modem unable to connect under Karmic

2010-05-21 Thread David Fraser
I had this problem under Karmic. Then under Lucid everything seemed to work
fine, until yesterday ...
I tried following Damjan's instructions in #68, but they didn't work for me:
 * I added the rule to /etc/udev/rules.d and did a reboot
 * On plugging in the device, it seemed to initialize OK (light went flashing
blue), but I could not see any 3G options under the NetworkManager menu
 * I then tried killing udisks-daemon and upowerd. After that, I plugged in the
device again. This time, it showed up under NetworkManager and I got a
successful connection
 * Based on the logs (see below), it seems that until I killed udisks-daemon
and upowerd this wasn't registered as a GSM modem. But I didn't do a manual
modprobe usbserial, that was loaded automatically, but only after killing those
processes

Here's /var/log/messages from plugging in the device (initial timestamps and
machine name stripped):

[Bug 380186] Re: ndiswrapper (ntos_wq) tainted leading to kernel crash

2010-05-19 Thread David Fraser
I also have a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo (I think 1818). The WiFi card is a Fujitsu
Siemens D2301 WLAN.
ndiswrapper worked fine in jaunty. I kept my jaunty partition as a backup.
Since upgrading to lucid it won't work.
I've reinstalled ndiswrapper and recreated the /etc/ndiswrapper/ config.
I've tested with the 2.6.32-21 kernel, and the latest 2.6.32-22.
I also tried using the jaunty kernel (2.6.28) on the lucid partition, and the
freeze still occurs.
However I can reliably boot and use the ndiswrapper driver on jaunty using the
same kernel.

If I boot into recovery mode, resume the normal boot, and then modprobe wlan0,
the soft lockup occurs.
Once I got a traceback but unfortunately the disk didn't seem to sync properly
so I couldn't find it on reboot - but it did have KfAcquireSpinLock in it. (See
#526450)

Since the jaunty kernel causes errors on lucid too, this seems to point to a
problem in ndiswrapper...
Would it be worth downgrading ndiswrapper to the jaunty version and testing
that?

[Bug 461141] Re: ntop produces 100% CPU load after suspend

2010-02-15 Thread David Fraser
I had this when turning on and off the Wireless option from Network
Manager manually. I attached gdb to the process and got the attached
stack trace. I then continued execution, saw the CPU usage go up again,
interrupted and got exactly the same stack trace. So this should
represent at least some of what's going on in this situation.

[Bug 36812] Re: Keyboard layout change on hotkeys press instead of release and do not work well with shortcuts

2010-02-11 Thread David Fraser
Ah, my problem was misunderstanding the SCIM config

See http://www.scim-im.org/forums#nabble-td4554222|a4554222

Basically I found that in the SCIM Global Setup I had
Shift-Control-KeyRelease-Shift_L, Shift-Control-KeyRelease-Shift_R,
Shift-Control-KeyRelease-Control_L, and Shift-Control-KeyRelease-Control_R
defined. Removing these stops the Control-Shift trigger.
But I missed this even looking at the SCIM dialog multiple times because it
looks more complex than a Shift-Control keypress

So although the Control-Shift in scim is incompatible with Ctrl-Shift-*
shortcuts, I can disable it, so this isn't a problem for me know

[Bug 228343] Re: Ctrl-Alt-Tab no longer moves focus between panels with compiz

2010-02-11 Thread David Fraser
Re #1:
I can confirm this bug. However I think the real bug here is that the default
keybindings of compiz overwrites a default keybinding in the gnome desktop.
 Workaround:
 * open gconf-editor
 * change the value of /apps/metacity/global_keybindings/switch_panels
This doesn't seem to make sense. That's a metacity setting, but metacity is not
running when Compiz
However I did try adjusting the key bindings in the Gnome Keyboard Shortcuts
dialog box, and it affects this key, so Gnome is obviously storing the values
here.
I set cycle_panels to Ctrl-Alt-comma, and switch_panels to Ctrl-Alt-period.
Neither of these keys have any effect
I suspect that Gnome is writing the settings here for metacity, and Compiz is
reading some of them using plugins but not all...
For example, the compiz Gnome Compatibility plugin contains separate settings
for Show Main Menu and Run Dialog (Alt-F1 and Alt-F2 by default) - these modify
and reflect the global_keybindings under metacity and also in the Keyboard
Shortcuts dialog
The Expo plugin has an Expo key setting, and this modifies the Expo key in
Keyboard Shortcuts-Desktop-Expo key as well.

I have found that in the Application Switcher plugin there are Bindings for
Next Panel and Prev Panel that can be configured with either mouse or
keyboard. However:
 * The keyboard bindings do not connect with the corresponding settings in
Keyboard Shortcuts / metacity
 * The functionality seems bizarre. If I set the binding to Ctrl-Alt-period,
then pressing that fades out everything except the selected panel. However as
soon as I release Ctrl or Alt, the desktop restores to normal and my window
regains focus. If I set it to something like period, then the effect lasts for
as long as I keep the period key depressed. In addition, any keypresses during
the focus on the panel seem to be sent to the last active window, not the panel.
So in effect these key bindings seem to be absolutely useless... unless I'm
missing something.

[Bug 519195] Re: No focus using keyboard

2010-02-11 Thread David Fraser
Quoting from
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-accessibility/2010-February/004194.html
 for reference:
Actually this isn't quite true although the method for focusing them
isn't obvious, nor is it obvious that you are on the indicator applet.
Basically, tab around the panel until you hear menu bar one to the
left of the clock. Press the right arrow. You will then focus the
indicator applets with the keyboard. Note though that there are still a
 few issues here:
 1. Indicator is not identified as such, this would be easily fixable. It
is identified as menu bar instead which, while technically correct in
a sense as it does function similar to a menu, isn't descriptive enough
since there's already the main menu bar on the panel.
 2. While doing this, sometimes you get stuck on the panel and can only
tab between the indicator and the clock. The only way out of it I've
found is to click the mouse somewhere else. This is more nasty. None of
the task switching or panel switching keystrokes will work if you get
 into this situation.

See also https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/228343
for issues with selecting the panel in the first place when using compiz

[Bug 228343] Re: Ctrl-Alt-Tab no longer moves focus between panels with compiz

2010-02-11 Thread David Fraser
Correction to my above post: the Next Panel binding does in fact select the
panel highlighted, and defocus the current window!
However there is no highlighting of the panel to indicate this, and in addition
actually doing anything with the panel is tricky.
So far if I:
 * Select the panel using Next Panel (e.g. Ctrl-Alt-period), the current window
is defocused and the panel is selected
 * Press tab to cycle through elements in the panel
Only some of the items in the panel show the dotted-line highlighting. It's
quite tricky to see when you've selected the indicator applet element for
example (see bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libindicator/+bug/519195: sometimes
pressing left/right seems to just select the username and icon, and sometimes
it drops down the menu) - the net result is you can get lost fairly easily.

Note in addition: Once the indicator-applet-session or indicator-applet
is selected in the panel, it swallows all keypresses it doesn't expect,
including the Tab and Shift-Tab keys you'd expect to get out of it. This
seems more consistent than what is described above

2010-02-10 Thread David Fraser
I've tried the patch and it allows me to use my Ctrl-Shift shortcuts,
but the SCIM dialog still pops up when I release one of Ctrl or Shift

where the Ctrl-Shift mapping is defined (it's not in GNOME shortcuts or

[Bug 412195] Re: ttf-tahoma-replacement makes some web-sites look ugly

2010-02-05 Thread David Fraser
My comment on comments in #45ཿ
 * the original bug report was about the embedded bitmaps - actually the
original bug said it makes sites look ugly in Firefox and other browsers
 * although the replacement tahoma font works fine for non-bold and bold on LCD
monitors, on LCD monitors with sub-pixel antialiasing, there is essentially no
difference between normal weight and bold weight.

Please see https://bugs.launchpad.net/baltix/+bug/50529

So although bug 514493 is about restricting tahoma to wine, should we
not also be reporting the LCD-bold issue upstream and getting that
fixed? Should this have a different bug?

[Bug 446146] Re: Several Huawei USB dongle don't work with kernel 2.6.31-12.40 (2.6.31.1 update related)

2010-01-27 Thread David Fraser
@madbiologist: I have been trying to track this for the E220. My lsusb reads:
Bus 006 Device 007: ID 12d1:1003 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. E220 HSDPA Modem
/ E270 HSDPA/HSUPA Modem
dmesg repeatedly shows option: option_instat_callback: error -108
So since this is the same error, and the upstream bug is still linked to this
report, should this be treated as the same bug or not?
It's unclear what needs to be done to clear this up for the E220 and whether
anyone is working on this or it's being treated as solved because it's a
different modem.

Also of interest is that the same modem works successfully on a friend's
machine with the same kernel on karmic (2.6.31.17.30)

2010-01-27 Thread David Fraser
@madbiologist: Brilliant, thanks for pointing me to the other bug. I've
delinked this from the E220 upstream bug and added a comment to the description
saying this bug does not apply to E220.
And yes, it was exactly the same modem (but I'll address that in the other bug)

** Bug watch removed: Linux Kernel Bug Tracker #14499
   http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14499

** Description changed:

  SRU Justification:

Impact: The Huawei modem (with a certain firmware it seems) claims to
support a certain sense data format, but does not do so.

Fix: Change to USB storage, which lets the device fallback to a shorter
sense format. This patch went into 2.6.31.5 (usb-storage: Workaround
  devices with bogus sense size).

I'm using a Huawei E169 USB dongle to connect to a GSM mobile broadband
network. It used to work out-of-the-box with Jaunty and previous
versions of Karmic (kernel 2.6.31-11 and previous). However the device
doesn't work any more with the latest kernel.

Dmesg gives me repatedly this message:

  dmesg:

[Bug 446146] Re: Several Huawei USB dongle don't work with kernel 2.6.31-12.40 (2.6.31.1 update related)

2010-01-19 Thread David Fraser
Note that the fix messages are only for Lucid, not for Karmic. This is
assigned to Andy Whitcroft, who last commented on this in November -
perhaps we could have a comment on whether the Lucid fix is definitive,
and if we can expect a karmic backport?

If not, we need some analysis of:
 * Which machines are fixed/broken
 * If they are running Lucid or Karmic
 * Which kernels they are using
 * Which modems they are using
 * What symptoms they experience
 * If the modprobe usb_storage trick works

I'm using a Huawei E220 and this is still broken for me on kernel
2.6.31-17 on karmic (as the status reflects). The ttyUSB devices are
created then torn down every few seconds. I can get a connection, but
the connection immediately drops when the device is destroyed.

2010-01-18 Thread David Fraser
I had the same bug on my Inspiron 1525 laptop with an Intel GM965/GL960 card.
I am suspicious that this is due to the Virtual screen size in the graphics
card being set to 8192x8192
Previously I have always set this to a maximum of 2048x2048 or less in
xorg.conf, to prevent running out of memory on the card and getting corruption.
However these settings seem to be ignored on Karmic; with the following
configuration:
Section Screen
Identifier Screen0
Device Card0
MonitorMonitor0
SubSection Display
Viewport 0 0
Depth 24
Virtual2048 2048
EndSubSection
EndSection

I still get this:

dav...@golg:~$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 3200 x 1080, maximum 8192 x 8192

(Note that my boot up resolution is smaller, at 1280x800, so that's not
what's adjusting the maximum)

[Bug 507799] [NEW] Ctrl-Fn shortcuts for switching windows sometimes have to be pressed twice

2010-01-14 Thread David Fraser
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

Since upgrading from karmic to jaunty, my Ctrl-F1 to Ctrl-F5 keyboards that are
defined for switching workspaces aren't working consistently
I have checked that they are still defined in the Keyboard Shortcuts window,
and tried redefining them.
It seems that applications are now receiving the events sometimes.
Symptoms are:
 * In Firefox, Ctrl-F4 initially closes a tab, then switches to workspace four.
Other keypresses behave similarly - the initial Ctrl sequence seems to be sent
to the application
 * In gnome-terminal, if I have been typing in the terminal, pressing Ctrl-F2
through Ctrl-F5 the first time yields character sequences like;5Q;5R;5S.
Repeating the keypress while Ctrl is held down (or pressing a different
Ctrl-Fn) actually switches workspace. When I first hold down Ctrl, the cursor
changes from solid rectangle to an outline. Pressing any key (e.g. Alt, Shift,
F1, etc) changes it back to a solid rectangle. Since Ctrl-Alt doesn't do
anything, the easiest way to avoid the problem is to hold down Ctrl, press Alt,
release Alt, then press Fn whilst still holding down Ctrl

I am using Compiz as the window manager, and I have the Gnome
Compatibility and Commands plugins enabled

I am using SCIM and it is configured with Ctrl-Space as the trigger and
Ctrl-Shift switches to the next language

^_Pepe_^: So since this is reproducible in karmic on my machine, should
it be tagged as karmic too?

[Bug 506248] [NEW] [i965] X/gdm produce blank screen on startup after karmic upgrade

2010-01-11 Thread David Fraser
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I have upgraded my Dell Inspiron 1525 from Jaunty to Karmic (I still have a
Jaunty installation on another partition).
The Karmic Live DVD works absolutely fine with my display.
However, in my upgraded Karmic partition I have been unable to obtain a usable
X display.
Immediately on startup X goes blank and seems to freeze.
I have tried with the failover config, with no config, with vesa config, all to
no avail
I have also run X directly with -logverbose 9 -verbose 9 to test. I can ssh
into the machine but it sometimes freezes after starting X so that my ssh
session dies (although at least once it was still pingable)
I noticed that in /var/log/gdm/:0.log there are errors about MTRR, and that
there is a difference between /proc/mtrr on jaunty and karmic, and also that
lspci -vv returns different information on Jaunty and Karmic
I will attach some of the logs I currently have...
