[Bug 1967651] Re: Unicomp trackball/keyboard not recognised in Xorg sessions

2022-04-26 Thread David Lang
adding the package xserver-xorg-input-libinput appears to have solved
the problem. According to the folks at freedesktop, it should have
defaulted to use the libinput driver, even without the 40-libinput.conf
file, but in my case it didn't

** Changed in: xserver-xorg-input-libinput (Ubuntu)

I was hoping that updates to the full release would fix this, but it
hasn't. Any suggestions on what I should try to track this down?

separate bug filed for wayland

note that for this bug I am not sure that it's only an input problem for
this bug. The system is unresponsive (inc numlock) so I can't tell if
it's only the input or if the entire system is locked.

[Bug 1967817] [NEW] display problems with wayland

2022-04-04 Thread David Lang
Public bug reported:

I upgraded from 21.10 to 22.04 pre-beta. xorg isn't working (separate
bug filed for that), so I switched to wayland. Using gnome, kde, and
ubuntu desktops under wayland is giving problems with chrome and brave
browsers. If I have a single window open, it's pretty good, but if I
have multiple windows open (a half dozen for brave, 33 for chrome is
typical for me), the screen frequently flickers and I get portions of
the different windows showing up.

In many ways this is similar to screen tearing (historically fixed with
vsync updating in X), but it doesn't have a clean edge to it, and it's
not a matter of top of the screen one image, bottom the other, instead
it's a band (~1/4 of the screen high, not always in the same location,
but tends to be ~1/3 down from the top more frequently) and in that band
I see portions of other windows that are behind the forground window.

apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected jammy ubuntu wayland-session

** Description changed:

after updating to jammy beta, xorg does not work for any desktop, in
every case the desktop comes up, but there is no response to keyboard or
mouse (not even numlock). I tried unplugging and replugging the devices
  with no luck.

All desktops do 'work' in the wayland version, but the display flashes
frequently, showing parts of other windows

[Bug 1967651] [NEW] jammy beta xorg no kb / mouse

2022-04-02 Thread David Lang
Public bug reported:

after updating to jammy beta, xorg does not work for any desktop, in
every case the desktop comes up, but there is no response to keyboard or
mouse (not even numlock). I tried unplugging and replugging the devices
with no luck.

All desktops do 'work' in the wayland version, but the display flashes
frequently, showing parts of other windows

ubuntu=bug gathers information, but does not open the browser window
after reporting that it's uploaded the data.

[Bug 1967047] [NEW] upgrade failure from 21.10 to 22.04 due to PPA

2022-03-29 Thread David Lang
Public bug reported:

I had the kubuntu-backports PPA enabled and when I did do-release-
upgrade -d from 21.10 to 22.04 the system crashed partway through the
process. After rebooting, X would not start (white screen with a
frowning computer telling me the system had a problem and I should
contact my administrator)

after logging in from the command line and fixing broken/pending
packages via apt, the system would boot, but only to the command line
and startx would trigger the white error again.

when I attempted to do apt install kubuntu-desktop to try and fix
things, I got the following error

Building dependency tree...
Reading state information...
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Depends: libtaskmanager6 (= 4:5.24.3-0ubuntu1) but
4:5.24.3-0ubuntu2~ubuntu21.10~ppa1 is to be installed
Recommends: appmenu-gtk3-module but it is not going to be

I reported it to the kubuntu mailing list and they asked me to file a bug

[Bug 1446865]

2015-07-09 Thread David Lang
Thomas, if you start lots of sessions without anyone logging out, you
quickly run out of system resources for all the running apps.

But even with a single user on a laptop, I have to deal with the pain or
restarting sessions regularly because the laptop doesn't stay plugged in
all the time and doesn't have an infinite battery.

Personally, I prefer that Firefox/Chrome not startup until I tell them
to because I may not have network connectivity and 40 firefox windows
with a couple hundred tabs all reporting "connection failed" is not
useful.

The fact that KDE4 would detect when firefox was running at shutdown
(even when I start it manually from a shell window) is a bug as far as
I'm concerned. Go ahead and restart apps that I started through the KDE
menu, but don't try to detect apps that I start from the command line
and then start them automatically (especially when you do so without the
command-line parameters I provided)

2015-07-09 Thread David Lang
>> Go ahead and restart apps that I started through the KDE menu, but

> That's unfortunately indistiguishable.

only if you only do this by looking at what's running at the time you
shutdown.

If something is started from the KDE menu, then you can track that you
started it and the user hasn't exited it. restart those apps.

But if you are actually trying to restart all apps, then you are failing
miserably. I routinely have many apps running in terminal windows that
don't get restarted, as well as a few GUI apps (almost none KDE/Gnome
apps) that don't get restarted. Other apps that get restarted are
missing the context (what files they had open, etc) my terminal windows
get started, but beyond them and the browsers, not a lot more (and
currently all the terminal windws get shoved onto the first screen.

>> Thomas, if you start lots of sessions without anyone logging out, you
quickly run out of system resources for all the running apps.

> Risking a little OT, "which"?
> RAM? => https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Swap

swap is horrible to use, and it's still easy to run out of swap. You
actually don't want to have tens of GB of swap because the system will
become unusable if it is used. I run my systems with very little swap (I
only have one machine with more than 2G of swap, even if the system has
hundreds of GB of RAM). I've actually had a machine with 128G of RAM
that only had 120G of disk. My VMs for work typically have 40G of disk
or so, even if they have 32+G of RAM

disk space may be cheap, but only if you don't need to add a drive for
it and aren't using expensive storage (price the per-GB cost of EMC
storage for example, especially if you include replication of the
storage)

to the latest (20.0~a2~hg20130131r123843-0ubuntu1~umd1~quantal at the
moment) and it made no difference.

I can left click on links and tabs, but I cannot open menu items and
cannot right-click on anything

as far as extensions, adblock, flashblock, flash, java (I can't get a
full list without being able to access the menus)

[Bug 1015567] Re: upgrade failed: mixed non-coinstallable and coinstallable package instances present

2012-09-28 Thread David Lang
Dmitrijs,

The problem is that people who tripped over this bug cannot use the
normal methods to upgrade to get the fix. We greatly appriciate that the
bug is now fixed so this won't trash everyone else's systems, but the
question is how to fix the systems that this bug already trashed.

I got out of it by editing /var/lib/dpkg/status to add an arch entry
when one wasn't present.

However, most people are not going to be comfortable doing that, so what
can they do?

I suspect that this is going to require downloading a fixed dpkg binary
from somewhere, and then running something with that to get the fix
properly.

I could find the package, download it, extract it, and replace the
binary, but there is probably a much cleaner way to do this, but it will
take someone who knows the debian packaging internals better than I do
to identify what is the minimum safe thing to do.

[Bug 960160] [NEW] multilib problem between i386 and amd64

Re: [Bug 460738] Re: 100K log messages/sec with 9.10 amd64 on T61 laptop

2010-08-27 Thread David Lang
no, it turned out to be a bug because there were rsyslog modules from a
manual build competeing with the ones from the distro.

sorry I forgot to close out the issue after I found this.

[Bug 460738] Re: 100K log messages/sec with 9.10 amd64 on T61 laptop

2010-05-03 Thread David Lang
I found that in my case the problem was that I had an old version of
rsyslog installed and the new version was loading libraries from the old
one.

I had both /usr/lib/rsyslog and /usr/local/lib/rsyslog

[Bug 460738] [NEW] 100K log messages/sec with 9.10 amd64 on T61 laptop

2009-10-25 Thread David Lang
Public bug reported:

I upgraded to 9.10 beata on my T61 laptop on sunday 10/25

when it boots it generates ~100K logs a second that look like this

kernel: Cannot read proc file system: 1 - Operation not permitted.

by configuring rsyslog to not log these messages I can then boot and use
the system, but if I let rsyslog log these messages it fills the disk
_very_ rapidly
