[Bug 831308] Re: Evolution crash when copy/move contact between address books
Has just happened to me on 12.04LTS (encrypted home folder) after an extended period of non-use. Bug #822479 refers? Triggered by trying to move a contact from one address book to another (coincidentally prehaps, to the last address book on the alphabetically sorted list) Reproduced giving a message Ubuntu 12.04LTS has encountered an error - duly reported - twice within the past half hour or so before this report. The error killed Evolution but not the OS. Evolution was reloaded for the second try (from the top panel icon) so: If there is a memory leak it is leaking from the OS (ie when Ubuntu killed the running instance of Evolution it didn't get the memory back) On the other hand it could be Evolution not managing to move the address book entry for some other reason. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/831308 Title: Evolution crash when copy/move contact between address books To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution/+bug/831308/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

It is possible there was already a copy in the destination folder - impossible to know now. Trying again with Firefox open crashed Evolution (closed it) without triggering an Ubuntu error message. [Bug 1268297] Re: Topics not covered by help. (Improve this guide)
OK - it's all installed now, but it was nothing l;ike as easy as it is for a Windows user & that's the problem that concerns me. The fact that I can sudo and write console commands and pretty well know what I am doing isn't really the point. Would it be possible for a failed search for an application to point a windows-level user at an explanation of how non-supported popular software such as Google Earth is dealt with? Is there any way ythe console steps can be hidden from the user? I leave you with the thoughts - which don't need a response. II'm sure you've heard them before - just count me as yet another respondent on that score. Thanks for being there. [Bug 1268297] [NEW] Topics not covered by help. (Improve this guide)
Public bug reported: 1. By its very nature resolving #327770 might solve this too. I didn't find the How To. 2. Context - I am trying to install Google World. If that is not a supported process, and if you deliberately do not support the Google install it would be nice to have a pointer somewhere to that sort of possibility. 3. I could not find it in the Ubuntu store. I finally found it (for Ubuntu 64bit) using Google search. It downloaded (Firefox) & afteer some long worrying silences (not good) & some prodding (even worse?) the Ubuntu installer said it was installing. Google said thankyou (web page) 4. I have done a warm restart because I could not find it on my desktop. I still can't find it as a user. 5. If I sudo, find it and manage to launch it, it is not clear how I then would iconise the process. Ths bug report is explaining why I think the user guide will not meet the needs of a 'user' who would like to install Google Earth. A work- around would be very welcome but it is not the real point! [Bug 1249305] Re: Soffice Calc freezes
Thanks for the workaround but I'll stick with the released version for now (and on this 'production' system). Here are the initial versions of files and the final versions. I took the brief opportunity when all seemed to be working to restore VATform from the redone desktiop copy I made when it first looked like it was going bad. The copies you have are both from my Desktop. There was temporary data loss on VATform - with neither archive manager nor LibreOffice finding anything in the server copy but stat reported 40 blocks via putty. [Bug 620581] Re: Reduced screen resolution choices after update
Oops - misunderstanding ... The problem appeared - possibly as a result of a recent update. It affected the output from xrandr, and that, or some other effect of the problem meant I had an effectively unusable system. I have seen the same effect before on earlier versions - and had to reinstall to get round it. It is too rare for me to correlate it with version or particular hardware. The problem went away while I was investigating it - there was no update to make it go away; I think something I did cleared something. But since I cannot identify either something it doesn't help anybody much. But nor does a misunderstanding. My var/log/apt record shows the Xorg update that triggered the problem (dated 18 Aug) and the absence of any update since. I suspect something in the update caused my problem. ** Attachment added: "var-log-apt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/620581/+attachment/1511737/+files/var-log-apt.tar.gz ** Changed in: xorg-server (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid => Incomplete -- Reduced screen resolution choices after update https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/620581 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

OK - more checks ... in the course of which something reset itself ... Switching to other accounts and back showed they were unaffected. They still had the high res options.. Browsing hidden files in home of the affected account (the first user created and the user first logged on to after updating) looking at those updated recently revealed nothing of interest. Right click desktop to change background displayed choices but selecting one had no effect. Theme install (never done that before) with my already preferred clearview still selected was cancelled when it asked for s directory. Visual effects (currently None) asked for drivers when changed to Normal mode, then went into a flashing loop when cancelled from not being able to find them. [Bug 620581] [NEW] Reduced screen resolution choices after update
Public bug reported: may relate to #500687 System - a reference lucid system from 10.04 lucid CD downloaded late July, all updates, no tweaks, mostly working to local servers but inevitably with a bit of local work accumulation. Following the latest update which included an X- package, my screen resolution is now limited to 800x600 - which many websites and many Ubuntu utilities no not support graciously. Previously (lucid release CD with all updates except the last batch) I chose 1024x768 from a list that included several higher resolutions, all of which worked on my MBO e-tron 770 monitor (17 inch CRT, 'Unknown' on the System-Preferences-Monitors utility) If really necessary I can reinstall and not update to get earlier diagnostics but I would want to be sure I am getting the right stuff for you, and that I need to, before tearing this system down. xdpyinfo includes the following - clearly not right for a 17 inch monitor: screen #0: dimensions:800x600 pixels (212x159 millimeters) resolution:96x96 dots per inch depths (7):24, 1, 4, 8, 15, 16, 32 root window id:0x102 depth of root window:24 planes number of colormaps:minimum 1, maximum 1 default colormap:0x20 default number of colormap cells:256 preallocated pixels:black 0, white 16777215 OpenOffice must get its screen information from somewhere else - its documents are displayed approximately 20% oversize. from lspci: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Rage XL AGP 2X (rev 27) Subsystem: ATI Technologies Inc Device 8008 Flags: bus master, stepping, medium devsel, latency 32, IRQ 255 Memory at d800 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16M] I/O ports at c000 [size=256] Memory at da00 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4K] [virtual] Expansion ROM at 2000 [disabled] [size=128K] Capabilities: [50] AGP version 1.0 Capabilities: [5c] Power Management version 2 Kernel modules: atyfb e...@lucid-eddy:~$ xrandr --verbose Screen 0: minimum 320 x 240, current 800 x 600, maximum 800 x 600 default connected 800x600+0+0 (0x109) normal (normal) 0mm x 0mm Identifier: 0x108 Timestamp: 1184102 Subpixel: unknown Clones: CRTC: 0 CRTCs: 0 Transform: 1.00 0.00 0.00 0.00 1.00 0.00 0.00 0.00 1.00 filter: 800x600 (0x109) 28.8MHz *current e...@lucid-eddy:~$ lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS Release:10.04 ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Reduced screen resolution choices after update https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/620581 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 420372] Re: OOo does not nest bullets with different formats
OK - I have just tried Lucid and discovered the promote - demote buttons which do it for me. Going back to my bug report - my (intuitive to me) method still doesn't work on Lucid. Going back to the original software version the results are the same - it does work now that I know how to work it! So there doesn't seem to be any significant difference between the two versions. The problem was my approach - and the fact that I am more at home with menus than with icons! Issue confirmed closed with just a tinge of embarrassment ... and a feature request that adding a bulleted list should always involve a demotion below any current bulleting level. -- OOo does not nest bullets with different formats https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/420372 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 532842] Re: gnome-screenshot crashed with signal 5 in _XError()
OK - did a bit of an experiment. Taking care to keep all windows within the screen boundary and a smaller target window - Next try - crashed again. Then thought - I hadn't actually clicked in the target window to make it current. Did so, then inadvertently did a full screen screen shot - which worked. Then tried again, set the targeet window as current, screen shot just the current window, it worked. So does the problem occur if there is not a current window defined? (eg when what was the current window has been closed) I'm really sorry but I'm having to get some work done, so I have to pass this one over for now. [Bug 532842] Re: gnome-screenshot crashed with signal 5 in _XError()
Screen shot target was current window. First try at a screen shot was unsatisfactory due transparency issues not visible on the original. The unwelcome shadows were from the screen shot dialogue which had overlapped the original window. Second try involved moving the target to the extreme bottom left, renaming the first try, then trying again with the screen shot dialogue fairly high up on the right hand side - then bingo - the crash. Environment was Dell Dimension 4700 with only 512k of RAM, live CD to test Ubuntu, not install it. I had three text documents (852 bytes, 14.7Kb and 35.4Kb) already on the desktop, and the first screen shot was 96.4k - as would the second have been. For what it's worth (and so as not to lose it, because I may have limited storage here) all this current desktop content is attached. The .tgz is another 100k on the desktop so it looks as though the problem is not one of available storage. ** Attachment added: "Desktop contents including (renamed) target window" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/45210484/Ubuntu-10.4%20on%20Ld.tar.gz -- gnome-screenshot crashed with signal 5 in _XError() https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532842 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

OK - but log.smbclient is 618.8 Mb.I have grep-ed it down to show that there is no match in the log for the file names that were not backed up. The upload includes the 200 lines preceding the occurrence of each file that was backed up from the directory in question. If 200 isn't enough I can easily extend it. [Bug 469116] Re: Error in Sudoku time keeping.
Why do you open a bug if you know it's a duplicate? Last time I had a similar error message I did not have the presence of mind to keep the 'elapsed time' message on screen. I just cleared the dialogue and went to Help - report a bug. I realised later that the collected information may have been deficient in something useful, like the source of the cleared error message. This time I ran ubuntu-bug (help is not available with the dialogue box open) while the error box was still live. Ubuntu-bug did not pick up the duplicate, and I did not want to lose any of the evidence - so I went along with it and opened the new bug. But I tried to do it helpfully If the evidence I have managed to collect is no more useful than that already available, then this bug can be closed as a duplicate with nothing to add. -- Error in Sudoku time keeping. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/469116 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 437944] Re: Samba session request failure when using IP address
Chuck - see the upload. The test script (called test) first uses the netbios name redirecting its output to the file ntserver3, then uses the IP address redirecting its output to file IP91.249. I ran it three times. The netbios calls all worked as I would expect, and as you can see on the file ntserver3. All three of the IP calls showed the same "access denied" error - see IP91.249. FYI and to help you to assess things, I also have a record of an isolated failed overnight backup. The problem with that sort of event is its unrepeatability, so it is not really suitable bugfix fodder. But interestingly (IMHO) the unrepeatable backup failure also included error messages similar to the access denied messages on the IP smbclient output; the very much longer path and file name "session request to" field was progressively curtailed over several successive reports. So within this reproducible issue are processes that were also present in my unrepeatable backup failure. If you wish to follow up on the backup failure I will go over the records and get more detail for you. [Bug 436041] Re: Access Denied but TSC confirms it should not be.
Assuming 'this' is the Access Denied issue... I will check the server event log in the morning. The backup concerned is multi-gigabyte and takes nearly five hours. Needless to say it runs overnight. I will run it tomorrow with debug level 3 assuming my aged memory cells remember after work tomorrow. I don't know from memory how many thousand files are involved, and the problem is on the W folders at the back end of the alphabet. If you have any suggestion about how big the level 3 log is per 1000 files it might help me to make sure there is enough disk space on the client. I might need to relocate the log file away from the crowded 20Gb system drive onto the large backup drive. But I'll try anyway if you can't get back. I routinely use its IP address when accessing this server from my Ubuntu box. Windows, of course, uses DNS or netbios name resolution. I ran the smbclient -L test twice - once in each mode. I did this in a few spare moments at work, and have only just looked in detail at the results. The two results are interestingly different. If my memory cells hold out until Monday, I will run the test again to see whether the error messages on the IP-access try are repeatable, or whether they are the kind of ephemera that make bug-hunting difficult. I strongly suspect the CD reader. I have tried again tonight on the same hardware with CD No 1 used previously. I ran a launchpad hardware test which should appear somewhere with my email account attached. There were two defects: - one - the default English keyboard is the US keyboard. I am in the UK. (A colleague who installed from the live CD ended up with a US keyboard and had to be shown how to correct it.) - the second - no sound. I don't know whether this is a characteristic of this Dell model. The welcoming chime was loud and clear when I returned the machine to Windows and my wife. I would recommend putting this bug report in suspense unless/until either: - someone else has a similar experience or - a bug is found in the read checking logic of the live boot in either case, with my wife's agreement I will do my best to make the hardware really flakey (ie let it cool right down) and see if there is a detectable difference between this original version and any update. [Bug 366344] Re: gnome-panel crashed with signal 7 in panel_shell_register()
COLD BOOT - disk error message on two out of two occasions, offering to retry which invariably succeeds. The first occasion was when the CD was first loaded. The second preparatory to doing the integrity check. REBOOT - always (6 times now) reads OK as far as I know, including the disk integrity check. I have to give this hardware back to my wife for now. If others experience the problem and I need to return to it it will be possible, but for now I'm off to my own hardware to see what that does. -- gnome-panel crashed with signal 7 in panel_shell_register() https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/366344 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 366344] Re: gnome-panel crashed with signal 7 in panel_shell_register()
Reboot - I got an X-server error (not visible) with an out-of-vertical synch static black band across the centre of the display. The body of the error message was not visible. There was a choice (Retry or Continue I think from memory) but the keyboard was not working properly ( I got another retry button and other screen corruptions but neither option was properly selectable, and Return didn't). Ctrl-Alt-Del got me into a reboot. On the third attempt the live CD booted properly and I got panels and menus on the GUI. I cannot exclude the possibility of CD reader faults - yet. I will do a check on the CD and report back.. -- gnome-panel crashed with signal 7 in panel_shell_register() https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/366344 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 359700] Re: Inaccurate nautilus bookmark Help docs
Your point accepted - and thanks for the action. User Help is a delicate area - any user problem is a prima facie case for improvement! I got to the wrong (File-Open) context by searching for Bookmarks and selecting the 'Introduction to the Desktop' entry. The search was prompted by the fact that I could not find how to manage my bookmarks. I am now able to do so, but only by the indirect route of opening the bookmarked item, then editing it or whatever from the Nautilus menu. If there is a more direct route that works on the Desktop Menu list it would be really useful to have it signposted in the System Help route. If there isn't, I can foresee problems for users who need to delete a newly dysfunctional bookmark to a removable or network target. The workaround of using a working bookmark to get to the edit menu will not necessarily be obvious to the target audience for the Help documentation.. Having said all this, somebody who knows the system better than I do is better placed to know what to do about it - if anything. -- Inaccurate nautilus bookmark Help docs https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/359700 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 359700] [NEW] Inaccurate nautilus bookmark Help docs
Public bug reported: re Daily build today - 11Apr09 at 15:22 utc 9.04 development branch Features frozen, these are user guide comments re System-Help and Support 2.5.3.6. Adding and Removing Bookmarks: 1. To add the current location to the bookmarks list, press Add would be better as: To add the current open folder to the bookmarks list, press Add 2. or right-click a folder in the file list and choose Add to Bookmarks. just doesn't work - delete this. 3. You can add any folder that is listed in the current location by dragging it to the bookmarks list. You can't - delete this. re Nautilus Help 6.6.18.2. To Edit a Bookmark: 4. Choose Places ▸ Edit Bookmarks, isn't there - delete this and the following 'or'. Leave 'in a browser window,' 5. Is there any way of reducing the overlap and linking the two help systems? ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Inaccurate nautilus bookmark Help docs https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/359700 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 318060] Re: OpenOffice hangs or freezes the system - Hardy
Agreed. FYI no further problems after removing Ooov3 at home but see below. OooV3 still in use at work on a similar box that has not exhibited the problem. (Job was too big to tackle in time slots available at work). The task was achieved at home by using a few greps on the csv then sorting and analysing the much smaller spreadsheets on v2.4. A few cycles of memtest revealed nothing, but no way of knowing whether it was the reboot or removing Ooov3 that stopped the activity. So all in all, evidence is inconclusive, closure agreed. -- OpenOffice hangs or freezes the system - Hardy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/318060 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 318060] Re: OpenOffice hangs or freezes the system - Hardy
Chris - FYI OOoV3 has enough advantages for me to have loaded it onto my work Hardy as well as at home. Now both machines are exhibiting instabilities - even without OOo running. They just hang or restart for no reason. Similar hardware - both running the same updates as they come out, so not independent problems. Can't get to grip with it so I'm reluctant to file a bug that might go nowhere. But the unofficial OOoV3 has to come off I'm afraid - at least for a while to establish whether it is implicated in the problem. All FYI only at the moment. [Bug 318060] Re: OpenOffice hangs or freezes the system - Hardy
Turned back after sending the above just as my Hardy box went to sleep. A nudge of the mouse brought back everything except the calc window and its options dialogue. %CPU at 99 and TIME+ at 34: so it's been racing for some time. Came out at TIME+ = 35:36.xx It looks like pretty consistent 12 second-ish loop.
Chris It is still happening after updating to the OOo-v3 I get with deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ubuntu hardy main deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ubuntu hardy main added to my /etc/apt/sources.list. As a precaution I also upped my RAM to 1Gb. So I'm looking a bit more closely at how little I can do to see the problem. If I decline the offer to repair the document loads and eventually runs away. If I accept the offer to recover the document, but do not acknowledge the successful recovery by clicking 'Finish' it still runs away. soffice becomes active in the top list, and starts to tick up mill time. It seems that after about 5 seconds of TIME+ as shown by top, something happens and %CPU rockets up into the high nineties. X seems to keep running, the console window with top continues to refresh every 3 seconds, all windows can be moved around. But whilst the other windows repaint after being obscured, the OOo window with the invitation to 'click Finish' does not - unless I wait for a very long time. After waiting for this very long time (as long as it has taken to write this report so far on a different system using only one finger per hand because I never learned anything better in my youth) I now note that the OOo window has refreshed, and the %CPU mostly sitting below 1%. So I will now click Finish . I'm at 12:03.xx of TIME+ soffice comes to the top of top and the %CPU starts to rocket - then after a second or so it falls back. I do the edit - deleting the block of lines. It completes - %CPU at 7% then rockets again for a long long time. So I'll wait and watch. TIME+ = 16:16 still 98% Start playing Freecell on the same machine so that I'm there when it emerges. I wipe the freecell window over the soffice window so that I will see it refresh. TIME+ = 23:52 Card playing interrupted by soffice emerging from its loop. It looks as tough the loop takes about 12 minutes. My Calculate options - Iterations unticked, Steps greyed out 100, Minimum change 0.001. Look like defaults. [Bug 318060] [NEW] OpenOffice hangs or freezes the system - Hardy
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: openoffice.org I am processing a small weekend one day squid log file, renamed as .csv and imported into OOo2.4 with space as merged delineator. I have had recurrent difficulties and the file has subsequently been saved a couple of times in OOo2.4 native format, so by now it is a genuine if untypical OOo file. I am using calc to condense the file to identify unexpected 24/7 background squid activity. I now have an OOo file that consistently hogs CPU a short while after loading - even when I am not doing anything with it! It will be uploaded with screen shots and some information from my environment. ** Affects: openoffice.org (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- OpenOffice hangs or freezes the system - Hardy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/318060 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
