[Bug 839019] Re: bringing up 10ec:8185 wifi module freezes the system

2014-11-01 Thread Eric Shattow
Same hardware here:

$ lspci -nn | grep 8185
01:0d.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8185
IEEE 802.11a/b/g Wireless LAN Controller [10ec:8185] (rev 20)

$ uname -a
Linux boss 3.16-3-686-pae #1 SMP Debian 3.16.5-1 (2014-10-10) i686 GNU/Linux

Mainline 3.18-rc2 same problems apply. Found a hack / workaround is to
wrap iowriteNN with udelay()'s ; or to use ndiswrapper will also make
the device functional. Distro should probably blacklist the driver until
a proper fix is decided.

Confirm this bug resolved fixed, I have tested kernel 3.11 and confirm
basic functionality is correct, and remains correct in mainline kernel
(3.12-rc5). I did not test surround sound mode(s) and will file a new
bug if needed.

[Bug 1195377] Re: [Inspiron 1420, SigmaTel STAC9228, Speaker, Internal] fails after a while or plug in and out headphones

2013-07-20 Thread Eric Shattow
For comparison I have observed the Windows XP and SigmaTel Audio Control
Panel for driver SigmaTel 2/19/2007 5.10.0.5401:

Front Panel
A. Headphones, B. Headphones, C. Mic

A. Device Connected: Front Speakers, Device Connected: Headphones
B. Device Connected: Center / LFE Speaker, Device Connected: Headphones
C. Device Connected: Line In, Device Connected: Mic, Device Connected:
Rear Speakers

A is left-position jack, B is middle-position jack, and C is right-
position jack.

With Takashi's patch v3 the assignments do not line up with the above
functions. It would be nice if Surround 5.1 is possible on Ubuntu
however I can test that here or file a new bug, which would you like?

I think headphones is the left-side phono jack, line-out is the middle

HDAAnalyzer and Linux 3.8.0-26-generic:

headphones
card-0/codec-0/Node[0x0d]PIN # OUT=1 never plugged, OUT=0 plug in headphones,
OUT=1 unplug headphones

HDAAnalyzer and Linux 3.10.0-2-generic:
card-0/codec-0/data[2] # 1 never plugged, 0 plug in headphones, 0 unplug
headphones
card-0/codec-0/Node[0x0d]PIN # OUT=1 never plugged, OUT=0 plug in headphones,

Using HDAAnalyzer to set card-0/codec-0/data[2]=1 and
card-0/codec-0/Node[0x0d]PIN/OUT=1 fixes the internal speakers to play sound
again.

2013-06-27 Thread Eric Shattow
Public bug reported:

Regression from kernel 3.8.x to 3.9.x alsa drivers. After upgrade to
Ubuntu+1 the internal speakers stop working randomly or when plug in and
unplug headphones.

Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:Ubuntu Saucy Salamander (development branch)

Changing this data[2] setting in hda-analyzer does not appear to have
any effect on kernel 3.10.0-0 running system. Must reboot to restore
sound functioning on speakers.

[Bug 850145] Re: Huge CPU usage of alsaplayer and Xorg even if not playing

2012-02-11 Thread Eric Shattow
This bug #850145 is most evident in the alsaplayer-gtk interface. If I run
alsaplayer-text then there is no problem with cpu usage. The high cpu usage of
alsaplayer-gtk is a real problem and not a perceived problem, as the high cpu
usage affects system usability and the windowing manager slows to a crawl.

2010-11-25 Thread Eric Shattow
Fix has landed in Mainline 2.6.35.9:

commit 5ed216a908c5273995b2c65c14639c8b3448b065
Author: Johan Hovold j***...@g***l.com
Date: Thu Oct 21 10:49:10 2010 +0200

USB: mct_u232: fix broken close

commit 92ca0dc5ee022e4c0e488177e1d8865a0778c6c2 upstream.

Fix regression introduced by commit
f26788da3b342099d2b02d99ba1cb7f154d6ef7b (USB: serial: refactor generic
close) which broke driver close().

This driver uses non-standard semantics for the read urb which makes the
generic close function fail to kill it (the read urb is actually an
interrupt urb and therefore bulk_in size is zero).

[Bug 657081] [NEW] New firewire stack unreliable with Texas Instruments TSB82AA2 IEEE-1394b

2010-10-08 Thread Eric Shattow
Public bug reported:

Both controllers are tested okay working on an Ubuntu LiveCD environment
(kernel 2.6.28-4-generic) and the old firewire stack.

New firewire stack works reliably only for the Ricoh (internal)
controller. The TI (PCI Express) adapter appears to work but then I see
repeated messages filling up dmesg.

I'm able to reproduce the issue exactly.

1. Boot
2. Connect storage device to internal (Ricoh) firewire
3. verify that it is working by running command # dd if=/dev/zero bs=4k
of=/dev/sdb count=16k
NOTE there are no error messages yet
4. Unplug storage device from internal (Ricoh) firewire, wait for it to settle
5. Insert PCIE StarTech EC1394B2 (TI) controller, wait for it to settle
6. Connect storage device to PCIE StarTech EC1394B2 (TI) firewire, wait for it
to settle
7. verify that it is working by running command # dd if=/dev/zero bs=4k
of=/dev/sdb count=16k
NOTE that there are repeated errors filling up dmesg

...
[ 319.997795] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] CDB: Write(10): 2a 00 00 00 48 00 00 04 00 00

[ 320.511183] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] Result: hostbyte=DID_BUS_BUSY
driverbyte=DRIVER_OK
...

This is the most often case. Infrequently, when I boot there is no
problem using the TI firewire. After disconnecting and using the Ricoh
and then back to the TI again, there are problems.

[Bug 371434] Re: PCI ExpressCard hotplug requires pciehp.pciehp_force=1

2010-09-26 Thread Eric Shattow
Jordan, thank you for your interest in this bug.

With default configuration not using those settings, the card works only
when present during boot. If card is removed and added again, there is
an error, and it does not work again.

I confirm success with setting kernel options pciehp_force=1
pciehp_poll_mode=1 ; The card is then working in all configurations of
boot when present then remove/add, and boot with card absent and then
added after OS fully loaded.

Tested on Dell Inspiron 1420N installed with Maverick 10.10 beta (linux-
image 2.6.35.22.23) and StarTech EC1394B2 firewire express card.

Is there more information I can provide you?

[Bug 371434] Re: PCI ExpressCard hotplug requires pciehp.pciehp_force=1

2010-09-26 Thread Eric Shattow
P.S. Clarifying side note for the record, and unrelated to this bug, I
am experiencing *severe* data corruption with the new firewire stack
enabled in Ubuntu Linux kernel 2.6.35.22.23 in conjunction with the
StarTech EC1394B2 firewire express card. My definition above of
working is where I can plug and unplug a given express card and it is
correctly recognized again without a reboot.

Alternatively there is a PPA https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-
burning/+archive/ppa which can provide cdrtools. It needs some updates
for Karmic though.

[Bug 371434] Re: PCI ExpressCard hotplug requires pciehp.pciehp_force=1

2009-05-03 Thread Eric Shattow
** Description changed:

Using Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty as a reference, hotplugging an expresscard does
not work on my Dell Inspiron 1420n laptop computer. I can add
pciehp.pciehp_force=1 to the kernel cmdline options and then
  hotplugging will work.

[Bug 330824] Re: Soft lockups (freezes) when deleting files from ext4 partitions on 2.6.28

2009-05-03 Thread Eric Shattow
Confirm that 2.6.28-11.42 had the problem. I was able to reproduce the
issue 5 or more times by issuing 'rm -fr dirname' on an 80gb directory
hierarchy of files up to 5gb each. The system soft locked just like the
reported bug symptoms. Booting 2.6.30-020630rc4 resolves the issue for
me and 'rm -fr dirname' completed successfully.

[Bug 348836] Re: ext4: panic working with large files

2009-04-09 Thread Eric Shattow
I will build and test, but there is no user case to reproduce. I've hit
(what I think might be) this bug maybe 5 times in 2-3 months of heavy
ext4 filesystem usage. There is usually file corruption afterward. My
own use case is BitTorrent, and so files are checksummed and lost data
is thrown out. I don't know if there is a user behavior that would more
quickly reproduce the bug described by Original Poster.

[Bug 348836] Re: ext4: panic working with large files

2009-04-08 Thread Eric Shattow
This could be related to
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=490026 EXT4 panic, list
corruption in ext4_mb_new_inode_pa.

I'm experiencing a fatal panic occasionally on interacting with large
amounts of data. The system hardlocks and I'm usually working in X11, so
I don't have access to the panic message to confirm. It does sound
similar to the reported issue.

[Bug 318133] [NEW] drive map module missing from Grub2

2009-01-17 Thread Eric Shattow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub2

Legacy grub contained a very useful routine 'map drive1 drive2'
which is missing from Grub2.

A functioning patch has been committed http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html
/grub-devel/2008-08/msg00375.html

The patch needs interested developers to clean-up for Grub2 coding
standards before it can be committed upstream.

Ubuntu needs this one if Grub2 is to be a suitable drop-in replacement
for Grub Legacy.

[Bug 281535] Re: gnome-sound-properties plays wrong sound

2008-10-21 Thread Eric Shattow
I confirm this bug. Log attached.

ii gnome-control-center 1:2.24.0.1-0ubuntu6

Same thing is happening here. The Sound Preferences applet loses its
mind when any change to the Sounds theme is made. Sounds will only play
if there is an unmodified Ubuntu Sounds theme loaded. Steps to
reproduce:

1) gnome-sound preferences
2) Sounds tab
3) Pick Sound Theme = Ubuntu
4) Try the | play button, sounds should work
5) Set the Alerts and 'Sound Effects - DesktopLogin' (or any other item) =
Disabled
6) Try the | play button, sounds do not work on any of the Default or Disabled
choices.
7) Pick Sound Theme = Ubuntu
8) Try the | play button, all sound choices work again.

The observed problem by a user is that Login/Logout sound choices are
not respected after a reboot. I noticed this when the Login noise that I
had disabled in an Ubuntu Hardy install began playing after an upgrade
to Intrepid beta (sometime in October 2008).

Re: [Bug 26689] Re: Device mapper devices have incorrect ownership and permissions.

2008-06-24 Thread Eric Shattow
I don't know how it does this. I thought it was the vgscan command that
created those /dev/vg* device nodes.

I'm remembering an early system I ran to use LVM. The /dev/mapper/* entries
existed when there were no /dev/vg* nodes. When I wanted /dev/vg* nodes I
had to issue a vgscan --mknodes command. It was a long time ago and early
in LVM2 development.

Since the /dev/mapper/* nodes have correct permissions, I must ask if
/dev/vg* nodes having incorrect permissions is really a duplicate bug of
device-mapper issues?

How is bug #235689 a clear duplicate? The /dev/mapper entries in bug

If your user has access to /var/run/libvirt/libvirt-sock then virt-
manager 0.5.3-0ubuntu10 (or newer) will attempt to connect to
qemu:///system automagically.

[Bug 202432] Re: Unable to use anything but usermode networking

2008-04-25 Thread Eric Shattow
A documented and GUI-accessible means of permitting users access to
virtiualization is needed. I suggest that an enhancement be made to User
Settings to control group access for virtualization. Automating the
access is not needed.

[Bug 202432] Re: Unable to use anything but usermode networking

2008-04-25 Thread Eric Shattow
The guide at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KvmVirtManagerEtc instructs us to
do:

$ virt-manager -c qemu:///system

Adding my username to the libvirtd group and initializing my view of
qemu (with the above command), all network configuration works as
expected.

The need to type in this command is counter-intuitive for the users. Two
simple enhancements would solve this bug:

1. Provide a UI for the user to add themselves to system groups 'kvm, libvirtd'
2. Provide a UI for the user to run virt-manager and connect to qemu:///system

I understand using the terminal to enter commands from a guide for
advanced settings. These are basic settings which should have GUI
accessibility.
