[Bug 768275] [NEW] Compiz effects slow and laggy on Natty with ATI card
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: compiz Sorry if this is filed under the wrong package. Under exactly the same hardware configuration, Maverick always ran very swiftly and smoothly. Since switching to Natty, graphics are now very slow and lagged. This is most noticeable when using compiz zoom, before it was very smooth, now it's very choppy and difficult to use. It's also noticeable on ALT-Tabbing, sometimes it takes 3 seconds for the dialog to popup. Scrolling in applications is much more choppy than before. Makes the system feel slow and lagged despite having a very low system load and plenty of memory. The same problems occur in Classic Desktop as well as Unity. [Bug 131094] Re: Heavy Disk I/O harms desktop responsiveness
Peter Hoeg: Mine behaves almost exactly like you're describing. I've found if I create a 512MB swapfile and every time it starts getting a bit laggy like it's about to freeze up, I tab over to a terminal window and run: sudo swapon /path/to/swapfile sudo swapoff -a Something about turning on the swapfile and turning it back off does something that usually buys me about an hour before it starts locking up again. I know it's not great, but it's better than rebooting several times a day. I really wish someone would fix this problem, it's been consistent for me and a daily struggle/annoyance on 3 releases now. [Bug 611494] Re: VLC emits "static", depletes available memory on certain MP3s
I'm attaching an MP3 file that triggers the bug, though it's not specific to this one file, I have hundreds that do it from different sources. I can reproduce this problem every time by: 1. Loading the MP3 in VLC 2. Start playing it 3. If I let it play it will play for several minutes, then the loud screeching "static" starts 4. It's exasperated if I move the slider to seek different parts of the file a number of times, but this isn't necessary to reproduce 5. Once the static starts, if I hit PAUSE, I can watch the VLC process in top going from 30MB of RES to 3.0+ GB within a few seconds. At this point the system runs out of RAM and swap and crashes. Gxine and Windows Media Player both play the file flawlessly. [Bug 611494] [NEW] VLC emits "static", depletes available memory on certain MP3s
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: vlc When listening to certain long (around 75 minutes) MP3s of radio broadcasts, randomly during the playback VLC will abruptly emit a horrible static type sound instead of the audio and promptly chew up all available memory (several gigs) until the system grinds to a halt. [Bug 611493] [NEW] Poor handling of Out of Memory condition
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: upstart Handling of out of memory conditions very poor in my opinion. Experiencing a bug where occasionally VLC player will have a memory leak and quickly go from using 30MB of resident memory to several GB causing RAM and small swap to fill up until there's no remaining memory (this same situation has happened with other applications as well such as kdenlive, but that's irrelevant) I'd expect the Linux Kernel to gracefully handle this situation by simply terminating the out of control process as soon as the memory limit is reached so I can resume work in other applications without any loss. What actually happens is nothing like this. As soon as the memory limit is reached, the screen and mouse cursor lock up so I can't manually kill the bad process. The system becomes completely unusable for about 5 to 10 minutes totally frozen. After this excruciatingly long time period, the kernel will start terminating applications. Unfortunately it never terminates the VLC process which is hogging several GB of RAM, but rather starts terminating processes completely unrelated to the problem, such as GTK window decorator, openoffice, firefox, etc. There's a delay of several minutes between each of these terminations where the system remain unusable. Eventually after a total of 10-15 minutes of this it will eventually kill the process which is using all the RAM, it finishes leaving the system in an unusable state needing reboot (no window title bars, compiz dead, all accessories closed), and all unsaved work is lost in applications that were terminated. The out of memory handling is very inadequate for a modern operating system. [Bug 131094] Re: Heavy Disk I/O harms desktop responsiveness
I feel your pain. This bug affects me just about every day. My computer which is a fast system with plenty of RAM starts out lightning fast and over the course of the day gets slower and slower until it's so unusable I have to reboot. When it slows down 'top' doesn't really show anything but a really high io wait (usually about 80%). I always have plenty of free RAM. I thought it was a bad harddrive, so I bought a new one and the problem is still there. I found if I create a very small swap file (like 32 megabytes) just so the system can see some swap space it will freeze slightly less often (I can sometimes go two days on this configuration), but the problem is still there. I'm having to reboot daily like I'm running Windows ME or something :/ -- Heavy Disk I/O harms desktop responsiveness https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/131094 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 438868] Re: Address bar autocomplete and search bar autocomplete doesn't always work after emerging from a screensaver or suspend
@Jonathan CrockettI believe that's a completely different bug than the one in this bug report. In this report you can type normally, it's just the awesomebar matching results don't pop up at all unless you first alt-tab to another window. With this bug there's no highlighting and no text being deleted. [Bug 438868] Re: Address bar autocomplete doesn't always work
Hilkus: the bug I'm having isn't as you describe. I can type just fine, it doesn't get overwritten. It simply that the autocomplete suggestions don't pop up. Sometimes as I type I can see them appear for a split second then disappear. I can't confirm this, but I think that gnome or compiz or something else is causing them to be drawn *behind* the Firefox window instead of in the foreground. Alt-TABing to another window then back to firefox fixes which window it thinks is in the foreground hence it works again. -- Address bar autocomplete doesn't always work https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/438868 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 494316] [NEW] Awesome bar can't be used after Firefox regains focus from screensaver
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: firefox-3.5 This can be repeated 100% of the time. Whenever I leave the computer long enough for the monitor to shut off with Firefox 3.5.5 as the foreground window, when I get back the Firefox awesome bar doesn't work anymore. Typing into it brings it up for a tiny fraction of a second and it disappears. Also, when this is happening it loses keystrokes, maybe every 4th or 5th letter I type. It can be resolved easily: if I give focus to another application window in Gnome and then switch back to Firefox it works flawlessly again but repeats the next time I step away. I've been getting this since 9.04 and the upgrade to 9.10 didn't fix it. I tried a complete removal/reinstallation which didn't help. Not sure if this is a firefox problem, a compiz problem, an nvidia problem, or a gnome problem.
