Re: [Bug 676166] Re: Screen corruption when resuming from suspend/hibernate

2011-09-29 Thread Eylem
I thought it was clear from above that it's NOT an Nvidia issue but
rather a Compiz problem. Let's not mix things here. If there was a
problem with Nvidia, Gnome-Shell, Kwin and all the rest would have the
same corruption problem.

@Jacopo I don't think a new bug should be opened because there are a lot
of people signed up for this bug and I can imagine they all use the
nvidia propriety driver and experience the same issue. Also reviewing
the history of this bug it seems that from comment #13 onwards it had
solidified into the Launcher corruption issue on Natty with a recent
deviation for the additional desktop issue on Oneiric.

Can we be certain that the Launcher corruption is an nVidia issue as the
whole-desktop corruption ended up being fixed in Unity.
However if this is an nVidia issue surely there should already be an upstream
report because this Launcher issue was reported while Natty was still in beta.

[Bug 676166] Re: Screen corruption when resuming from suspend/hibernate

2011-09-15 Thread Eylem
@Cory: I know. What I don't know is how come they dismiss this bug as
Invalid. So, it's not exactly Nvidia specific. It's rather
Nvidia+Unity, which affects Unity desktop. If Unity developers won't
implement a workaround, then at least someone should coordinate with
Nvidia to fix the problem. And it is a very serious problem, mind you. I
mean, we're talking about an OS that offers Nvidia proprietary drivers
(when detected), which when activated breaks the sleep/hibernation. Does
that sound right to anybody?

[Bug 838050] Re: Launcher has tile backgrounds that wash out many icons

2011-09-06 Thread Eylem
@John: This is more than an Opinion and it certainly needs re-
consideration of default settings. As it is, the backlight just obscures
the icons. All the contrast that makes an icon recognizable and
aesthetically pleasing is dead. This is blatantly true for icons with a
single dominant color (e.g. the new Ubuntu Software Center icon). Please
change this default behavior. By default, the backlight should be either
completely off, or some dark grey color/tint that matches the Launcher.

[Bug 782524] Re: Suggestion for a new Unity Menu Concept

2011-09-05 Thread Eylem
I don't know if there is any work being done to address/implement the
idea here but I must say, I really really like it.

I think the click-to-gain-focus is not an issue if the menu is shown on
hover for only active windows. That is, if there is an inactive
maximized (unmaximized) window at the back, and you want to click on the
title bar to put the focus on that window, the menu should not show on
hover or first click. It should show only after the window gains focus.
Of course, if the user made it so that focus follows mouse, then it
would obey that.

Also, I've been thinking about the length of menu for some programs, as
this is a real potential issue even for the current design for low-res
screens and some applications. What can be done is to show as many of
the menu items as possible, and stack the rest in a final drawer item
that looks like a pointer or an arrow; just like how Windows or KDE
handles system indicators. This must be done dynamically (so I'm not
sure how difficult the implementation would be) so that if the user
changes window size, or font size, or screen resolution, all should be
handled seamlessly.

[Bug 759724] [NEW] Suggestion for Workspace Switcher, Applications, Files Folders and Trash icons

2011-04-13 Thread Eylem
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

I've been using Unity since Alpha 1 and it occurred to me that I'm not at all
using the Applications and Files Folders icons in the Launcher, I doubt
I'm the only one. This is partly because the same functionality is available in
the Dash but mostly because those icons are too far to the bottom. For me,
currently, they just sit there occupying space in Launcher.
The Workspace Switcher location is also too far to the bottom and you happen
to look for it, rather than just point and click. Another argument for hiding
the switcher button by default is that most users (while not me) do not use
workspaces at all and its existence by default would put many novice users off.
In summary, the problem for me is because Workspace Switcher, Applications,
Files Folders icons are ordered after the favorites and at the end, they do
not have a fixed position, something that would help to just point and click,
rather than looking for them.

The Trash icon is another story. I never used it, end of story. I know
it's there because it's been there in Gnome 2.x, which many people has
been using but this is a new Shell for God's sake. Why keep something
just for the memory of it? It just takes space in the Launcher.

So I suggest that
1) Hide all those icons by default and make them optional in CCSM, and

2-a) Make them movable in the Launcher, or
2-b) Leave the Trash position at the bottom but move the other icons to the
top, right under the BFB.

[Bug 747706] Re: Window placement and window rules are broken after 3.8.2

2011-04-07 Thread Eylem
OK, I just updated to 3.8.4 and window placement seems to be fixed. That
is the CCSM plugin Place Windows can now successfully open windows to
fixed workspaces, something that had stopped working after 3.8.2, IDK
why.

However, the Window Rules plugin is still broken. It is a plugin that
is not enabled by default and when you try to enable it 1) Compiz/Unity
crashes, 2) the set rules do not work. I'm trying to use the Sticky
rule.

It is very easily reproducible for me: Just click enable check button
for the Window Rules plugin and watch it crash. After that, it acts
like its enabled but if you set any rule, it does not work. If you try
to disable the plugin, watch it crash again.

Again, both plugins worked before 3.8.2. Place Windows plugin was
recovered after 3.8.4 but Window Rules plugin is still broken after
3.8.4.

This was fixed in 3.6.6 but it was resurrected after 3.8.2.

Please look into this, there is a regression in 3.8.2 and this is not
the only regression I'm experiencing.

[Bug 734738] Re: Dash: Alt-F2 Pressing enter on the dash can start the first entry of the second group from the history

2011-04-03 Thread Eylem
OK, wrong alarm. It's not a regression of this bug. But it's a new one:
when you type fast and press return, the Results is too slow to act
and your command is not fully executed. It seems the problem is the
Alt-F2 overlay is not executing your command but executing what
Results box offers and when you type fast, your command is processed
partially and you don't get what you intended. In order to get what you
want, you have to wait for the Results box to display what you
intended.

To reproduce, press Alt-F2 and type gksu gedit very quickly and press
enter.

Should I report a new bug? Please advise, thanks!

[Bug 731790] Re: Multiple quick clicks on launcher icon with multiple windows completely crashes Unity

2011-03-17 Thread Eylem
I'm not sure if it's related by I've been experiencing this crash
incredibly often after 3.6.6. Sure a lot of things were fixed but
something got broken in the meantime. It's the same crash as above but
it's being triggered by the simplest of things kind of spontaneously.
Three times in the last hour! Once I clicked Alt-Shift-Up (Expo), once I
was customizing Thunderbird toolbar, once I clicked Alt-Left in
Nautilus.

Please take a look at this, I cannot be the only one...

[Bug 735704] Re: Scrollbar on gedit is not flush with screen edge in unity

2011-03-16 Thread Eylem
Scrollbar in Gedit is not flush with window edge in unmaximized mode
either, so I think this is a Gedit issue, not Ubuntu or Unity. The same
thing applies to Libreoffice too and I'm sure there are other software
out there with the same design issue. System Monitor or Synaptic for
example has the scrollbar even further inside the window.

2011-03-16 Thread Eylem
I did not say it has anything to do with color. My final comment was
just a side comment. You can use the steps I outlined to get your
favorite theme to have right-aligned window controls. As to the top
panel, you're right, it is only left-aligned at the time being. Your bug
description did not mention the top panel though...

[Bug 733333] Re: Natty/Unity needs obvious way to toggle between open/close full/partial screen dash

2011-03-16 Thread Eylem
I agree with a need for a button to revert the Dash size to small, and
remembering the user choice next time Dash opens.

For a close button, I'm not sure, I like lean, and pressing Esc or re-
clicking the button that initiated Dash should work. Oops, I just
noticed, if you initiate Dash by pressing Applications or Files
Folders, re-clicking those do not close Dash. It really should.

[Bug 731790] Re: Multiple quick clicks on launcher icon with multiple windows completely crashes Unity

2011-03-15 Thread Eylem
Jean-Baptiste, thank you for looking into this. I can confirm that I
experienced both cases 1 and 3 as you put in comment #7.

I had case 1 with Evince, Libreoffice, Nautilus, and Gedit, and it seems
like it doesn't matter what the application is.

I had case 3 with Evince, Libreoffice and Mathematica. Till your post I
hadn't thought they were related. But both cases are triggered by clicks
on the Launcher icons, and clicks don't have to be too many or too
quick.

I can easily say that both cases become more probable as the Unity
session uptime gets longer. I had reported another bug where long
uptimes causes the Launcher not to hide or dodge. Might be related if
there is some kind of degradation in Launcher (or Compiz?) as time goes
(I'm not a developer, but I'm sure you can put this vague sentence into
context).

I'm not sure what you mean by case 2. When it happens, window
decorations are still there but the top panel and Launcher are gone? I
don't think I had that one then...

[Bug 732438] Re: Launcher forgets to hide/dodge after long uptime

2011-03-10 Thread Eylem
Hey Paul, it seems it's related to bug #731872 but the persistent
behavior of the launcher in my case is not just for several seconds. It
stays there no matter what you do with the mouse, and indefinitely until
you restart unity. Even re-setting the hiding preference in CompizConfig
does not help.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: unity

- What happens is that after some time, the launcher stops hiding/dodging even
if it's set to do so. When it happens, the launcher boundary seems to have even
some edge resistance/attraction.
- This happens to me quite often as I leave my computer on for long times. The
only remedy (without any console commands) seems to logout/login.

[Bug 731790] Re: Multiple quick clicks on launcher icon with multiple windows completely crashes Unity

2011-03-10 Thread Eylem
Paul, your suggestion for a workaround does not work. I mean unity (or
compiz) does not start, the command (unity --replace) terminates with
segmentation fault and exits. So far I've been unable to recover from
this crash. It's very serious and it doesn't take much to trigger it. I
just had a crash when I had two Nautilus windows on two different
workspaces and I clicked once on the Nautilus launcher icon: boom.

[Bug 550625] Re: Alps touchpad is recognized but synaptics clients and scrolling do not work

2010-10-21 Thread Eylem
After almost any Kernel related updates one needs to redo the steps
described in #186. I'm saying this as a heads-up to people who don't
have success trying the psmouse.ko's attached here, and as an
explanation to why it stopped working all of a sudden.

What I don't understand is how is it that such a long standing bug is
not addressed by Ubuntu devs even if it's a temporary fix as this one.
Fingers crossed for a solid fix though...

Thank you to all who contributed in this!

[Bug 342447] Re: Bluetooth mouse connection in Jaunty not working at startup and drops when resuming from a low power state

2009-11-17 Thread Eylem
I put this bug report up more than 8 months ago, while playing around
with Jaunty's Alpha and I am sorry and equally puzzled to see that the
final version of Karmic has the exact same issue. I don't understand;
either there are so few Bluetooth mouse users that Ubuntu dev's decided
to ignore us or they just couldn't reproduce the problem. Please, I need
an explanation if anyone cares to give any. How come something that
works perfectly in 8.10 is broken in both 9.04 and 9.10, and how come
something so seemingly small but that takes away all the user experience
away is not fixed in 8 months? Thanks...

I tried Ubuntu Karmic Alpha 6 64bit and the issue seems to be resolved
there. However, I also tried the Xubuntu Karmic Alpha 6 64bit and
still having the same problem there: no mouse after sleep/wake.
Interesting... I'll try the final versions before install, in any
case... I never installed Jaunty just because of this problem.

I'm not sure if it's related to the applet or directly to the bluez stack but
 I guess the latter.
 Thanks!

Update: Bluetooth connection is dropped after reboot and log in/out, as well.

Anybody? This is very important for me (and I believe for many other
users) and will hinder me from upgrading to Jaunty if not solved.
Thanks!

[Bug 335567] Re: jockey-backend crashed with IOError: [Errno 19] No such device

2009-03-14 Thread Eylem
About the Display settings offering to use Nvidia's tool, I think it is
how it's intended to be. Meaning, you're supposed to say Yes. Just
like in M$ Windows, Nvidia settings tool takes over the control. What
needs to be done possibly though is to make this more clear and and
smooth, without a warning that might scare many users away from saying
Yes. Not a show stopper but hey Ubuntu just works, right?

[Bug 342447] [NEW] Bluetooth connection drops when resuming from a low power state

2009-03-13 Thread Eylem
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bluez

Version: Ubuntu jaunty (development branch) 9.04
Every time the computer resumes from sleep mode the bluetooth mouse drops

same mouse with Ubuntu 8.10 and didn't have this problem.
I'm not sure if it's related to the applet or directly to the bluez stack but I
