OK, I attempted to install and test the kernel, but it doesn't want to boot properly. Booting normally, I end up with a blank purple screen. In recovery mode, I get as far as this message: Starting TiMidity++ ALSA midi emulation... then nothing more. I can switch to VT1, and login, but if I try to start lightdm-session, I get: WARNING **: Cannot open display: There were also some errors from DPKG, I attach the output in the following file. First chunk is the text sent automatically to the file as per my terminal command, the second is copied from the terminal itself. Public bug reported: Most of the time with my Toshiba laptop, suspend/resume works OK. However, sometimes (around 1 time in 4) suspend fails (during going to sleep) with the following symptoms: - Screen goes dark, backlight off - Screen remains blank, backlight comes back on - No flashing caps or num lock - Increased fan activity after approx 10 seconds - Ctrl+Alt+Del , Ctrl+Alt+F1, short press on power button, REISUB all have no effect. - Only way to recover system is to hold down power button. Suspending from the console using sudo pm-suspend does generate some text, unfortunately, it appears on the screen too briefly to take a photo. I will attach dmesg and pm-suspend logs shortly. This did work in the past, however, it was some time (and several kernel versions) ago. With the -12 dbgsym kernel installed, I was able to run locatehang, which returned: $ sudo ./locatehang [sudo] password for charlie: Looking for function that matches hash from the Magic Number from the kernel log. Attachment added per instructions. I restarted g-p-m in verbose mode, then pressed each of the not working hotkeys (see above) in turn. Then I stopped g-p-m. Just to be clear- suspend to disk (as well as RAM) works fine from the menu. Unfortunately, I am having difficulty getting pulseaudio out of the equation- I edited /etc/pulse/client.conf to show 'no' instead of 'yes', but it still seems to reappear on resume, and when I kill it, too! OK, disregard the above comment. I managed to disable pulse, and suspend/resume. On resume, the Alsamixer terminal reported that the sound device had been unplugged (see screenshot), but on reselecting the device (F6), it appeared to be unmuted. Music played, but only through internal speakers- I'm not sure using alsamixer etc to change to external ones. However, after resuming from suspend, the desktop is barely responsive. The problem occurs after every resume, but worked without issue on Lucid. No flashing caps-lock. Changing to a terminal using Ctrl+alt+f1 works, but working with the terminal is still very laggy. Hi Unfortunately, this causes a serious problem on my laptop. As I have mentioned in various places, the Acer 5920 (G) laptop includes a set of Media Keys that are recognised by Ubuntu as another touchpad. It seems that these media keys are recognised as the first touchpad, and are the target of any tweaks or settings (eg by gsynaptics). Using your package results in tapping (but not scrolling via the right- hand-side of the touchpad) being disabled. As there are 2 touchpads, and the touchpad settings appearing to target the media keys, this combination could result in an unusable touchpad in Karmic. There are plenty of people with similar laptops, so I think it's very important that we address this issue- either by facilitating changing settings of both 'touchpads' or reverting to previous behaviour. Hi Christian I followed your instructions, and perfectly understand what you are saying, and was surprise when it did not work. There aren't many more details to give- just to note that every time I log in, Tomboy is present as an icon in the notification area on my panel. There is no .gnome2/sessions file. There is no entry for Tomboy in System Prefs Startup Apps either. The only way I have found to get rid of this behaviour is to uninstall Tomboy. Unfortunately, a .crash file does not seem to be generated- the /var/crash folder has some nvidia-glx files and an xserver-xorg file from some mucking about I was doing with the drivers. The OSD for brightness here is not quite right- it doesn't always agree with the actual brightness of the screen, particularly after quick multiple presses or holding the keys down. OK, that's all sorted with the new .fdi file EXCEPT for a glitch remaining in the brightness control. A quick thought on it, could you let me know if you are seeing the same thing, and if there are any more clues? When I adjust brightness, the screen looks like it goes to minimum (if trying to decrease the brightness) or maximum (if trying to increase) momentarily before reverting back to what appears to be the commanded level. Output from my lappy: ~$ cat /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness levels: 80 50 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 80 90 100 current: 90 Which all looks perfectly reasonable. Any more thoughts?
