OK, I attempted to install and test the kernel, but it doesn't want to boot 
properly.  Booting normally, I end up with a blank purple screen.  In recovery 
mode, I get as far as this message:
Starting TiMidity++ ALSA midi emulation...
then nothing more.
I can switch to VT1, and login, but if I try to start lightdm-session, I get:
WARNING **:  Cannot open display:

There were also some errors from DPKG, I attach the output in the
following file.  First chunk is the text sent automatically to the file
as per my terminal command, the second is copied from the terminal
itself.

Most of the time with my Toshiba laptop, suspend/resume works OK.
However, sometimes (around 1 time in 4) suspend fails (during going to
sleep) with the following symptoms:

- Screen goes dark, backlight off
- Screen remains blank, backlight comes back on
- No flashing caps or num lock
- Increased fan activity after approx 10 seconds
- Ctrl+Alt+Del , Ctrl+Alt+F1, short press on power button, REISUB all have no 
effect.
- Only way to recover system is to hold down power button.

Suspending from the console using sudo pm-suspend does generate some
text, unfortunately, it appears on the screen too briefly to take a
photo.  I will attach dmesg and pm-suspend logs shortly.

This did work in the past, however, it was some time (and several kernel
versions) ago.  With the -12 dbgsym kernel installed, I was able to run
locatehang, which returned:

$ sudo ./locatehang

I must be missing something.  I am seeing the symptoms of this bug (high

I restarted g-p-m in verbose mode, then pressed each of the not working
hotkeys (see above) in turn.  Then I stopped g-p-m.

Just to be clear- suspend to disk (as well as RAM) works fine from the
menu.

Thanks for responding, Daniel.

Unfortunately, I am having difficulty getting pulseaudio out of the
equation- I edited /etc/pulse/client.conf to show 'no' instead of 'yes',
but it still seems to reappear on resume, and when I kill it, too!

OK, disregard the above comment.

I managed to disable pulse, and suspend/resume.

On resume, the Alsamixer terminal reported that the sound device had
been unplugged (see screenshot), but on reselecting the device (F6), it
appeared to be unmuted.  Music played, but only through internal
speakers- I'm not sure using alsamixer etc to change to external ones.

I hope that is some help.

I have a pair of Logitech V5 USB speakers connected (pretty much all the
time) to my laptop.  They work well, and are controllable through
Pulseaudio's Sound Preferences window.

However, whenever I resume from standby, the speakers are always muted,
regardless of the state they had been in beforehand.

This problem also existed on Lucid.

OK, so having a search for compiz resume bugs yielded the following
solution:

CCSM  General Options  Display Settings:
Disable sync to v-blank.

I don't know if this is a workaround or it's fixed.  Haven't seen any
other users with this issue.  Maybe it's just me!

Suspending to RAM appears to work OK, screen blanks, and power LED
flashes slowly.  However, after resuming from suspend, the desktop is
barely responsive.  One or a combination of the following are observed:

- the screen remains black
- the mouse cursor is not rendered
- Gnome panel system monitor pauses  for long (few seconds) periods.

The problem occurs after every resume, but worked without issue on
Lucid.  No flashing caps-lock.  Changing to a terminal using Ctrl+alt+f1
works, but working with the terminal is still very laggy.

Attached are dmesg from immediately after a resume from suspend using:
sudo sh -c sync; echo 1  /sys/power/pm_trace; pm-suspend
Also, lsmod.

Please give guidance on any further info required.

Hi

Unfortunately, this causes a serious problem on my laptop.

As I have mentioned in various places, the Acer 5920 (G) laptop includes
a set of Media Keys that are recognised by Ubuntu as another touchpad.
It seems that these media keys are recognised as the first touchpad, and
are the target of any tweaks or settings (eg by gsynaptics).

Using your package results in tapping (but not scrolling via the right-
hand-side of the touchpad) being disabled.  As there are 2 touchpads,
and the touchpad settings appearing to target the media keys, this
combination could result in an unusable touchpad in Karmic.  There are
plenty of people with similar laptops, so I think it's very important
that we address this issue- either by facilitating changing settings of
both 'touchpads' or reverting to previous behaviour.

Hi Christian

I followed your instructions, and perfectly understand what you are
saying, and was surprise when it did not work.

There aren't many more details to give- just to note that every time I
log in, Tomboy is present as an icon in the notification area on my
panel.  There is no .gnome2/sessions file.  There is no entry for Tomboy
in System  Prefs  Startup Apps either.

The only way I have found to get rid of this behaviour is to uninstall
Tomboy.

Notifications from Rythmbox and Pidgin show the same behaviour as with
Intrepid.

OK, what now works for me is:

Using Alkis' fdi, and adding:

acpi_backlight=vendor

to the boot parameters in menu.lst.  I guess that using that fdi
overwrites any changes I made by downloading the patch from Martin, but
there you go!  Now it's perfect.

OK, I tested this, and it sort of works OK.

Output from one brightness down followed by one brightness up press:

In practical terms, each press seems to give one or two steps on the
brightness scale, and a bit of a flicker.  It is usable, but a bit ugly.

Also, my bluetooth button effects one brightness increment, and if held
down smoothly increases the brightness; as such works slightly better
than the increase brightness button!

Any thoughts?  Standing by to provide more info.

From looking at the nv forums, it seems that the suspend/resume issues
with the current 180.xx drivers are quite widespread.  Until there is a

The issue has been recurring again today, a couple of times.
Unfortunately, a .crash file does not seem to be generated- the
/var/crash folder has some nvidia-glx files and an xserver-xorg file
from some mucking about I was doing with the drivers.

Is there any other way of providing debugging information for this?

I have just added the blacklist video fix, which I still need even after
today's hal updates.

The OSD for brightness here is not quite right- it doesn't always agree
with the actual brightness of the screen, particularly after quick
multiple presses or holding the keys down.  Anyway, that's a very minor
point.

Please let me know if there's anything to add/remove/modify.

OK, that's all sorted with the new .fdi file EXCEPT for a glitch
remaining in the brightness control.  A quick thought on it, could you
let me know if you are seeing the same thing, and if there are any more
clues?

When I adjust brightness, the screen looks like it goes to minimum (if
trying to decrease the brightness) or maximum (if trying to increase)
momentarily before reverting back to what appears to be the commanded
level.

Output from my lappy:

~$ cat /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness 
levels:  80 50 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 80 90 100
current: 90

Which all looks perfectly reasonable.  Any more thoughts?

Thanks for this.  Unfortunately, it didn't work for me.  I'm not very
good with xmodmap and things.  I am using your 30-keymap-acer.fdi file,
that fixed the hotkeys.  Attempting to follow your instructions, I made
/etc/rcS.d/S90eurodollar.sh, with the following contents:

#! /bin/sh
echo 'keycode 186 = dollar dollar dollar dollar dollar' | xmodmap -
echo 'keycode 185 = EuroSign EuroSign EuroSign EuroSign EuroSign' | xmodmap -

As per your instructions.  Owner=root, 'Allow executing file as a
program' checked.

Can you tell me what I've missed?  The $ and € keys don't seem to return
anything at all, not even in xev.

Ticking/unticking 'Stick to panel' rectifies the problem.  Compiz is
working with nvidia driver 177 applied.
