[Bug 811745] Re: Whole system freeze after safely remove external usb drive

2011-07-29 Thread Frodon
I would like to add to this bug report that the issue is not only about
not being able to unmount drives, the usb issue is more deep.

With the latest kernel transfer of large files ( 20Gb) will just crash
on my computer leaving the usb in an unknown and unusable state (lsusb
command will hang) with no messages in the log files.

As for others using previous kernel seems to work.

[Bug 671782] [NEW] Wrong colors displayed by eog on calibrated screens

2010-11-06 Thread Frodon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: eog

On a calibrated screen which use an ICC profile launched through
dispwin, Eye-of-Gnome display wrong colors. Indeed it seems Eye-of-Gnome
don't use well the ICC profile used by X.

On contrary all other apps like gthumb, GIMP, Fspot, firefox, ... don't
have this issue.

According to the following dscussion EoG needs to have some metadata in the
image telling that it is sRGB, however even with images containing metadata
telling that it is sRGB the colors displayed are wrong.
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/eog-list/2009-March/msg00010.html

Thanks to anyone willing to help with this. In such state EoG is just
unusable for photographers as it doesn't display the right colors.

Same issue here with Lucid Lynx and a acer 5720G, i tried the script

Can we expect a backport of the fix for Lucid Lynx for those who use LTS

[Bug 619875] [NEW] WhisList : field to set the battery threshold for auto-shutdown

2010-08-18 Thread Frodon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

This report belongs to wish list category.

The idea would be to have a field in the gnome-power-manager applet menu
to set the battery threshold (in %, time or both). This can useful as
the battery remaining time calculated can be sometimes a bit different
from the reality and one could appreciate to set a higher/lower
threshold easily.

To make it clear this field would configure the apps/gnome-power-
manager/thresholds entry of gconf and maybe also the
use_time_for_policy parameter in apps/gnome-power-manager/general to
choose % or time to set the threshold.

This is not much but i'm sure it would have a positive impact on user
experience (many ubuntu users are laptop users nowadays).

Feel free to modify/move the report if needed.

[Bug 382640] Re: xorg crashes (nvidia 180.51)

2009-08-10 Thread Frodon
Yep, same issue here.

It seems to happen only when playing with open office but i had the same kind
of issue with intrepid on my previous computer with completely different
hardware and the way to reproduce the crash was just to use gdesklet or system
monitor.
So, this is not a major issue for me as X don't crash often but for some other
users it's a real nightmare.

I have to say that this bug is the most annoying and frustrating i've ever had
with linux as the message in the log just tells nothing about the root cause
and we have had this issue with every ubunbu release.
This is the only reason why in my mind linux is a bit less stable than other
OS, X souldn't crash like that without giving useful info about the root cause
of the crash, this is just frustrating.

Hope something can be done to enhance the log with useful infos when X
crash.

[Bug 382909] [NEW] Installing stuff with wine alters .dmrc and /home/username rights

2009-06-02 Thread Frodon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wine

This is now a known bug we are many to have on a regular basis.

Basically installing wine and apps through wine alters /home/username
and .dmrc file rights leaving the user with an error message after
logging:

User's $Home/.dmrc file is being ignored. This prevents the default
session and language from being saved. File should be owned by user and
have 644 permissions. User's $Home directory must be owned by user and
not writable by other users

Obviously the solution is to chmod 644 the .dmrc file BUT also the
/home/username rights which have a conflicting +w right for group and
others.

As a significant amount of users are having this issue, although it is a
rather armless issues, i think it would help digging on this trying to
understand why wine have the bad habit of doing this. Maybe this should
be forwarded to wine development team.

[Bug 152648] Re: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error

2008-11-16 Thread Frodon
Let me join the group.

I experience xsession crashes with intrepid ibex with nvidia driver 173 and 177
present in the repos. For me this issue is not random and i have been able to
identify each time what to do to make session crash :
1- right click any Gdesklet
2- play with system-monitir

The strange part in my case is that if i enable metacity composite
manager then i can't reproduce the crash, it goes the same if i replace
metacity by xfwm4 the xfce WM.

Anyone tried the 180 driver and can confirm if it solved the issue ?

Glad to see that at least i'm not alone.

[Bug 296757] Re: Gdeklets unusable in intrepid - session crash

2008-11-12 Thread Frodon
Thanks.

Since dapper gDesklet is just working great and i never experienced any
issue upgrading since dapper so i really wonder why it crashes so badly
now with metacity and only with metacity.

As a side note xfwm4 have embedded compositing where metacity hasn't
(not activated by default) so i wonder if compositing has something to
do with this.

Do you run successfully gDesklet through metacity without compositing ?

I will try to do some more testing once at home, as for compositing i
don't use it with metacity so i should be in the same configuration than

I will check too in gDesklets options (gdesklets configure) if I've not

I've searched everywhere users with similar issue and the only similar thing

Be ready for the irony :

If i enable metacity compositing gDesklets works with no issue through
metacity (with compositing) then if i disable metacity compositing and
restarts gdesklets then it crashes.

It might be related to transparency or compositing only since for
metacity i have verified that activating compositing fix the issue or at
least it is true from my quick testing.

[Bug 296757] Re: Gdeklets unusable in intrepid - session crash

2008-11-11 Thread Frodon
I confirm this too as it is session which crash and not gDesklet it
seems.

Right clicking any gDesklet of any sort makes xsession to explode and go
back to login screen immediately.

I've made an interesting experience which leads me to the conclusion
that metacity is the problem.

Because if i replace metacity by xfwm4 (xfce WM) then i can use gDesklet
without any issue so this as to do with metacity in some way i am now
sure.

[Bug 21668] Re: evolution won't clear its cache

2008-10-12 Thread Frodon
Same goes when you delete a bunch of messages to free some space the
result is that you delete mails through evolution but you get no free
space.

Seems to be basic feature but it's still not there, lets cross our
fingers for solution or at least a workaround.

[Bug 130132] Re: dot-thumbnails gets huuuuuge

2008-10-06 Thread Frodon
I'm bumping this thread, we are many to long for an automatic cleaning
of old thumbnail.

This is a real pain to get almost 1Go of thumbnail, a good part of them
being unneeded and outdated.

What can we do to get this bug report taken in consideration for a new
additional feature to be included to ubuntu or nautilus itself ?

This doesn't look as difficult to implement, i already saw some users
using bash script on cron job as quick and dirty fix.

[Bug 157780] Re: gnome-session-save scew up session file

2008-08-15 Thread Frodon
Yes, i guess this impact only users playing with WM so maybe we can
safely consider than someone playing with WM is able to fix WM related
issues even though it would have been better to autodetect the WM while
generating the session file.

Anyway we can still re-open the bug latter if some users confirm this as
an annoying issue, so lets close the bug report.

[Bug 238788] [NEW] Still poor IDE performance, bug exist since feisty

2008-06-10 Thread Frodon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.24

Hello,

I think it's time to put this on the table again as this annoyance exist
since feisty and nothing as moved on this. Hope this can a day get the
attention it deserves.

Since old IDE drivers has been dumped we are many to issues slow
transfer rates with IDE drives and this despite the fact that hdparm -tT
reports really correct values.

On my desktop computer the problem appear like that :

- hdparm -Tt reports Timing buffered disk reads : 76Mb/s which is really good.
- If i plug an external usb drive i can transfer at 30Mb/s which is good too
and the same as in windows.
- If i move a bunch of videos from one internal IDE drive to the other internal
IDE drive i get a transfer rate of 8Mb/s and this happen every time i do such
transfer and only when i do such transfer.

There's definitely something wrong in the new driver which create slow
transfer in some cases. I truly hope someone will have a serious look at
this, after more than a year without any move on this i'm a bit
desperate and scared than no one care about it.

[Bug 231669] [NEW] Partimage not present in Hardy liveCD

Public bug reported:

As you should know partimage is not included in ubuntu liveCD which
gives an install/test only purpose to the ubuntu liveCD whereas we are

Partimage inclusion in the liveCD would be very interesting as many

[Bug 213889] Re: Missing laptop_mode documentation

2008-05-06 Thread Frodon
Hello Dougie Richardson,

I agree with your point and was myself more thinking about community
documentation inclusion. I always felt uncomfortable advising the use of
laptop_mode to solve head parking issues as there wasn't any documentation to
support it.
laptop_mode is a really powerful and useful tool which would deserve more
popularity IMO.

Being French i can provide support for translation of this page, but i
think we may need agreement for this first right ?

Anyway if you are willing to spend time on this i would be happy to give
you a hand.

[Bug 119258] Re: K3B is freezing system AFTER burning DVD

2008-04-14 Thread Frodon
Thanks Gareth for your links, hope someone can provide a useful
backtrace for K3B.

My personal experience led me to the conclusion that K3B doesn't not play well
on some configurations, i have now burnt about 10-15 DVDs with gnomebaker
without any issue so for me it is definitely related to K3B and the way it uses
the drive.
I can also confirm from my past experience that the best way to create such
crashes is to burn using the K3B verify feature.
Can someone with the problem confirm this trying gnomebaker or brasero instead
of K3B ?

As for me i just don't use K3B anymore which solves all my burning
issues.

[Bug 213889] [NEW] Missing laptop_mode documentation

2008-04-08 Thread Frodon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

There's no laptop_mode documentation on https://help.ubuntu.com/ whereas
this would be extremely useful and would help a lot of users who are
reporting false bug reports regarding laptop_mode and head parking
problem.

Many users suffer the head parking problem but really few know that you
can fix it configuring correctly laptop_mode using BATT_HD_POWERMGMT,
LM_AC_HD_POWERMGMT and NOLM_AC_HD_POWERMGMT parameters.

A complete laptop_mode documentation with a part about the specific head
parking problem would be really a must to have as there's a constant
increase of users with head parking problems or users wrongly blaming
laptop_mode.

A complete documentation which cover quite well all the aspects of laptop mode
is available on the french wiki so maybe we could just get agreement from the
authors and translate it :

[Bug 119258] Re: K3B is freezing system AFTER burning DVD

2008-03-17 Thread Frodon
I'm using k3b for a long time on my computer (since dapper) and i have noticed
that under gutsy these hardware lock up are really frequent using k3b.
Sometimes it freezes before the end of the burn process, sometimes during the
verify written data process but at the end i have really some difficulties to
burn. If i bur a CD now under gutsy i have 40% of chances to get hardware lock.

However what is strange is that till use GnomeBaker i never got any
problem and already burned 5 DvDs. So from my experience it looks like a
bug related to k3b and the way it uses the drive.

Anyone has any infos on known k3b bugs which causes freeze or hardware
locks ?

2007-12-13 Thread Frodon
This has been confirmed by some users on the forum if it's what you want to
know.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=568995

If the autostart file is doing is job despites the presence of the item in the
session file then this is not an issue but more an unusual way to handle this.
I mean that i already checked that items unchecked in the session setting
window are well put to X-GNOME-Autostart-enabled=false in the corresponding
.desktop files (which BTW are not recognized in nautilus for weird reason).

Anyway it's been a long time this bug report has been posted and i don't
have time to test things anymore for the moment so maybe this bug report
can be closed as i won't be able to provide you more information than
the one i have already provided in the near future.

To conclude this bug seems a bit painless for me and i would have really
preferred that the other one i have reported about gnome-session have
been answered and fixed has the problem is more serious and the fix
simple.

Thanks you for your interest.

[Bug 162831] system preference sessions unchecked items still appear in session file

session (with gnome-session-save command for instance) then open your
.gnome2/session file you will see that bluetooth applet is still launched.

Where it becomes annoying :
Many users are experiencing long login time and loading things you don't need

[Bug 157780] Re: gnome-session-save scew up session file

2007-11-05 Thread Frodon
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gnome-session

+ gnome-session-save command don't look at the WM your are using but at the
desktop gnome application window_manager current Gcong key which may
not be up to date.
+ In my case the current key was wrongly set to /usr/bin/xfwm4 instead of the
standard /usr/bin/metacity therefore the generated session file will use xfwm4
as window manager (which is known to cause sometimes long login time).
+ Each person trying to change his WM may issue this kind of annoyance with the
session file.
+
+ This is either a gnome-session-save issue because it is checking the
+ Gconf key rather than the WM itself or a Gconf key update issue because
+ when changing your WM the current key is not updated.
+
+ To reproduce this:
+ 1- Change your desktop gnome application window_manager current
Gconf key to something else than your current WM and run the gnome-session-save
command. Then check the session file, it should use the WM set in the gconf key
and not the one you're using.
+ or
+ 1- change your WM and run the gnome-session-save command, then check your
session file to see if if it's using your old WM or the current one.
+
+ Old description (outdated now) :
After gutsy upgrade, each time i use gnome-session-save it result in a broken
session file. With this broken session file impossible to finish the gnome
login (waited 2 minutes).
To workaround this i had to put back my old feisty session file then it is
good again. I can reproduce this as much as i want, if i use gnome-session-save
command it brokes the session file each time.

[Bug 157780] Re: gnome-session-save scew up session file

2007-11-04 Thread Frodon
Ok here some more informations.

I discovered some strange behaviour about gnome-session-save. YOu can
see in the gutsy generated session file that xfwm4 is set as default
manager with no reason. However for an odd reason the desktop gnome
application window_manager current Gcong key was set to
/usr/bin/xfwm4 which could explain the error.

Anyway this clearly demonstrate that the gnome-session-save command is
not looking for the WM your are using but is looking to the Gconf key
which like i shown can be wrong.

Please try to reproduce this on your computer, set the desktop gnome
application window_manager current Gconf key to something else than your
current WM and check that gnome-session-save will take in consideration your
Gconf key and not your current WM.
Then change your WM and check that the Gconf key (like i guess) is not updated.

I'm pretty sure to have located the problem now, thanks to anyone who
can confirm this.

[Bug 157780] Re: gnome-session-save scew up session file

2007-10-30 Thread Frodon
One more thing i would like to add and which is really weird to me is
the presence of these lines in my gutsy generated session file (the one
who don't work ) :

,Program=xfwm4
13,CurrentDirectory=/home/frodon
13,CloneCommand=/usr/bin/xfwm4 --display :0.0
13,RestartCommand=/usr/bin/xfwm4 --display :0.0 --sm-client-id
117f00010100011934840570061180003

I have xfwm4 installed but am not using it at all so this has really nothing to
do in my session file and i wonder how this came into it. I think this point is
showing that something is wrong somewhere with gnome-session-save and has
reported many time in the following bug report many are issuing long login time
so there's might be something ultimatly :

[Bug 157780] Re: gnome-session-save scew up session file

2007-10-28 Thread Frodon
Unfortunatly my old feisty session file is really different than the one
created under gutsy so it is hard for me to catch what could be wrong, in
addition i tried to delete my session file then start a new session and run the
gnome-session-save command with no apps opened and it results also in a broken
session file.
So for me it a bit surprizing that after deleting the session file and with no
apps opened the gnome-session-save command still brake my session file.
I think there should be something wrong in the way how gutsy write the session
file compared to feisty.

I join in this post the my old feisty session file which is working
correctly.

[Bug 113532] Re: kernel 2.6.20 disk write performance much slower than 2.6.17

2007-07-10 Thread Frodon
It seems that the problem may be related to the fact that the IDE drives are
now handled by the SATA drivers and thus in some cases hdparm can't set options
correctly on some drives.
As i said i have 2 IDE drives in my computer one issue slow down the other not
so feel free to ask me any output that would help you to find what is the
configuration option which make the second hard drives to work slowly.

For the record some have noticed also this slow down on suse with the
kernel 2.6.20 so there's really something with the way the 2.6.20 kernel
is handling IDE drives.

Hope this can be improved and a workaround released.

[Bug 124486] The gnunet version in the repository is outdated

2007-07-06 Thread Frodon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnunet

The gnunet version in the repository is 0.7.0e in feisty and 0.7.1c in gutsy
and these are really old versions and the guys on #gnunet barely offer support
for these version because many bugs have been fixed and things improved now in
the 0.7.2
So the version of gnunet in the repository is pretty much useless and will
surely slow the growth of this wonderful project within ubuntu because of the
difficulty to make this version working properly.

The actual version is 0.7.2 and the 0.7.3 is going to be realease next
month (august) so i think it is really time to fix this gap.

Hope this don't require too much job.

Thanks.

PS: if a new package is made for gutsy i would like to request as well a
backport package for feisty.

[Bug 68735] Re: Module mod-tls.c is missing in the proftpd edgy package

2006-11-23 Thread Frodon
You're completely right, the module mod_tls is compiled as a DSO module only in
the edgy and backport dapper package.
Thus all you need to use the module is to add this line in your proftpd.conf

[Bug 68735] Module mod-tls.c is missing in the proftpd edgy package

2006-10-27 Thread Frodon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: proftpd

The proftpd package provided in edgy (v. 1.3.0) isn't compiled with the
mod_tls.c module enabled.
This could be a big issue for those who run edgy eft and need TLS encryption
for their ftp server because without this encryption passwords and usernames
are transmited in plain text.
Since this module was enabled in dapper some users may not have noticed that
this module is no more enabled and thus make their FTP server vulnerable.

Here is the list of the modules enabled in the edgy package :
mod_core.c
mod_xfer.c
mod_auth_unix.c
mod_auth_file.c
mod_auth.c
mod_ls.c
mod_log.c
mod_site.c
mod_delay.c
mod_dso.c
mod_auth_pam.c
mod_readme.c
mod_cap.c
mod_ctrls.c

It may be a good idea to make this module enabled in the package
provided by the official edgy repository because for a professional
server install it doesn't make sense to run a FTP server without
encryption.

Same problem here.
But sudo update-initramfs -u -k 2.6.17-10-generic don't help because the

You may need (like me) to create it before running the sudo update-initramfs

sudo mkinitramfs -o /boot/initrd.img-2.6.17-10-generic 2.6.17-10-generic
sudo update-grub

A new initramfs-tools package has been released today, will test if it
solve the problem.
