[Bug 736930] Re: NM frequently disconnects mobile broadband and refuses to reconnect
Ah, sorry, but I can't tell. It was a USB driven Huawei. You know, this was a year ago. And the problem was with the internet connection. So repairing it was needed like water in the desert. I tried hard for about a month or two, but ultimately failed with solving it with that modem. So I switched to another connection method (DSL) at another internet provider, gave my 3G modem to a guy who used another OS, and forget about the whole problem at all. Probably I'll try to avoid anything from Huawei in the future. They should have a few developer working on native Ubuntu support for their products, don't they? [Bug 746078] Re: USB modem disconnects after a random time
I have similar issues with a Huawei E272 modem. After some time it disconnects, and I have to unplug and plug the modem again in order to connect again. Disconnection occurs much less often and also reconnection is possible without replugging the modem if there is some keep-alive network traffic trough the modem. So I usually run the following command in a terminal in the background: $ ping -i9 www.some-server-that-responds.com This generates some minimal network traffic every 9 seconds, and that is enough for some time to keep the connection alive. However, random disconnections do still occur. The modem seems to be hidden from the system for a second, as if it were plugged out and in again (but no such thing happens). [Bug 438150] Re: [karmic] Network-manager fails to reconnect to 3G network
I have quite similar simptoms here, with minor differences, with the Huawei E272 (which I heard about as a fast E220). First a minor issue, if the modem is connected during bootup, it is not recognised. So I disconnect it during bootup, and plug it in later. Than... The first connection to the network works perfectly. However, either I lose connection or disconnect manually, I am unable to reconnect any more. There seems to be high CPU usage during the connection attempt. I attach the tail of the syslog, which repeats a simple pattern of messages until I cancel the connection request. The only way to connect again to the network is to reboot my computer - first plugging out the Huawei, than rebooting, than plugging in the Huawei again, and than the connect may succeed. [Bug 414539] [NEW] Sticky Notes put onto workspace #2 appear on workspace #1 after reboot
Public bug reported: I am using 3 virtual desktops, aka workspaces, each for different purposes (ie. studying, working and free software development). [Bug 355086] Re: Wesnoth save game file format in jaunty is incompatible (1.4 - 1.6) and saves just vanish
OK, so saved games did not really vanish, but are unusable with Jaunty's version of Wesnoth - and you want to continue the campaign you already played a lot. If this is the situation, you have some resources at your hand, and you are not afraid of the Terminal, keep reading. ;-) If you want to play Wesnoth the way you did played in Intrepid, you need Intrepid. Fortunately, you can have Intrepid and Jaunty on your computer at the same time. The solution is called virtualization, and the tool I just used continue my campaign is VirtualBox Open Source Edition. These are the steps to play :-) : 1. install virtualbox-ose 2. Start VirtualBox and configure a new virtual machine. I gave it a hard drive of 8 Gigs, and an Intrepid LiveCD iso as CD-ROM. Also don't forget to enable audio among the settings (my choice was PulseAudio). 3. Start the new virtual machine. The livecd boots, and you can install Intrepid onto the newly created virtual hard disk. 4. Than, in your Intrepid virtual machine: 1. Install roughly the following packages : wesnoth dkms It took me about 90 minutes to reach this state. In theory, here you can start Wesnoth, but the display resolution may be to low to enjoy it. So here comes the harder stuff - and the Terminal. You will have to tell your virtual Intrepid that it is running in a virtualized environment to be able to change display resolution. dkms was required to make that easier. 2. From the tools menu of your VirtualBox window that displays your Intrepid, select Install Guest Additions. This will download a 18megs ISO file and mount it. Still in your Intrepid virtual machine, start up a terminal, and navigate to the mount point of the downloaded ISO file (it was /media/cdrom0 for me). There enter: ./VBoxLinuxAdditions-x86.run After this, you have to configure your virtual Intrepid's X server. So edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf like this: in Section Device set: Drivervboxvideo in Section InputDevice set Drivervboxmouse There should be NO alwayscore or sendcoreevents anywhere in your virtualized xorg.conf file. After the change, you have to restart the X server in your Intrepid. Simply logging out and back again probably solves this. Here, if you try to resize your VirtualBox window, and the Intrepid desktop resizes with it, than you are almost done. In case of problems, you still can ask for help :-). 3. Now you have Intrepid, Wesnoth, and can resize your display. The last thing to do is to copy your old, well played .wesnoth directory to this newly created virtual system. Simply copy .wesnoth from your non-virtualized home directory to the home directory on Intrepid - overwrite the .wesnoth dir that came with installing Wesnoth to the new system. Every setup information and every save game for Wesnoth is in the .wesnoth directory. In fact, I was unable to transfer data directly to the virtual machine. So I sent it to the Internet, and downloaded it from inside my Intrepid VM. With the .wesnoth directory in place, the last thing to do is go fullscreen with the VM, and launch Wesnoth. Voilá! It works. It is quite playable on my 1.6 Ghz Celeron (I have 1GB ram, that's needed, as I gave the Intrepid virtual machine 400MB). The whole process of setting this up probably can be done in about 2-5 hours depending on computer speed and network connection. Disk space consumed: 9GB. Network traffic: ~1GB. If you try this, and have problems, let me know. If you have success, let me know that also ;-) ! -- Wesnoth save game file format in jaunty is incompatible (1.4 - 1.6) and saves just vanish https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/355086 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 355086] Re: Wesnoth save game file format in jaunty is incompatible (1.4 - 1.6) and saves just vanish
I have the same problem here; but I don't think that it is an upstream problem, in fact, I think it is an Ubuntu special problem. I had this kind of problem before, when updating Ubuntu from 8.04 to 8.10, and for now I see it to be not a Wesnoth specific problem. It affects the whole Ubuntu lifecycle, and probably many applications. In those times I was upgrading to Intrepid, I was learning using the Gimp from it's help files. I was learning day by day, always working myself through more and more chapters from Gimp-help. During the update to Intrepid, Gimp version has changed, a rather nice upgrade: from 2.4 to 2.6. But the help package was not ready, and offline Gimp-help stopped to work at all. So after the distro update, I was not able to continue my learning experience the way I was doing it before. I filed a bug-report, thus. These days I played Wesnoth. I enjoyed it and was involved in a campaign (like Gerfried). After the distro upgrade, the experience is lost: I cannot continue along the path I was going. Version incompatibility. I played some other games, such as SuperTuxKart, which works terribly after the distro upgrade - the problem is with Intel video performance, a well documented bug, although. I knew I would have problems after the upgrade. But I am a free software enthusiast, and I was very interested in the work my other enthusiastic fellows did worldwide. So I upgraded. There may be always pains and losses as the world I live in change. Now I try to do my best to cure those problems that arose from the change - not only to myself, but to the whole Ubuntu community. In my spare time, I probably will start another Wesnoth campaign, or simply try playing online - a thing I was not brave enough to do before. Meanwhile, thinking about how to make distribution upgrades less a pain and more a joy seems an important task if Ubuntu seriously wanted to conquer desktop market majority ;-) ! -- Wesnoth save game file format in jaunty is incompatible (1.4 - 1.6) and saves just vanish https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/355086 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

For me, 2.6.28-11 fails the same way as 2.6.27-13. So I went through the debug process with Andy's kernel. [I'm sorry for doing this so late; I was a bit afraid of installing such a custom kernel; later I realized that I was simply paranoid :-(, as Andy had put online the sources of the changes and he is likely to work at Canonical anyway - it's just that thing that if you don't understand sg, you afraid of it - and a matter of general trust. So I am sorry.] The exact happening is this: the computer suspends (led is blinking), on keypress the computer begins to wake up but immediately, before any video activities turns off or suspends again (led is blinking), after about 1 or 2 seconds it begins to wake again (fans are started), but after another second it remains in a steady state without video output: than turning it off is the only option. [Bug 325563] [NEW] Balazar installs ttf-dustin and therefore makes Office packages hard to use
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: balazar Balazar Brothers depends on the ttf-dustin package, a package with 20 different fonts in it. Adding 20 unwanted fonts to the system makes office applications hard to use: the font selector lists become unusable for common people. It is extremely annoying in such countries where the language requires such subsets of the ASCII that are not included in the fonts in the ttf- dustin package. In such languages, ttf-dustin is perfectly UNUSABLE. It is trash. It seems even more feasible that some networking problem causes the freeze: without an active network connection, it never occured. I am using a Huawei E272 cellular 3G modem connected via USB. [Bug 306033] [NEW] Inaccessible offline GIMP documentation in Intrepid
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gimp On Hardy, I installed the gimp-help package, and GIMP automatically knew to show up the offline docs on clicking Help. However, when upgrading to Intrepid Ibex, the GIMP also upgraded to 2.6 - but the gimp-help package is still about 2.4. It would be not a problem, thus, because the docs always lags behind the new features, and are still quite useful. But: in the new GIMP 2.6 if I click Help, and ask for the manual, I am redirected for the online version. The offline docs does not show up anymore - even when the gimp-help package is installed. ** Affects: gimp (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Inaccessible offline GIMP documentation in Intrepid https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/306033 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 304597] Re: [2.6.27-9] Occasional freezes during suspend-to-ram
Hi Leann, I have little or no experience with 2.6.27-7. The bug must have a hiding nature because the freeze sometimes occurs and sometimes not - I was not able to determine the exact circumstances needed for repeating it. It had occurred at least three times with 2.6.27-9, I took photographs of the second and the third (the traces are quite similar). I have tried 2.6.27-10 from intrepid-proposed, and there are bad news there, but it seems to be another bug: the system goes down to suspend but does not wake up from that state, instead powers off itself. This was the default behavior in Hardy, thus. :-( So in 2.6.27-9 the suspend works about 9 times of 10. Especially if I stop every network activity before - but this is just a guess, ie. I cannot reproduce the freeze with doing networking and ordering suspend meanwhile. -- [2.6.27-9] Occasional freezes during suspend-to-ram https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/304597 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 158528] Re: AccessX : mouse keys forget state on reboot
Dear J.C., I have tested this now with Ubuntu 8.4, and it works fine, so it seems fixed. The only difference is that at by the time of reporting I used an Apple MacBook, on which the problem occured, but now I use an Acer laptop, on which the problem seems solved. I have no access to an Apple MacBook with Ubuntu installed onto any more, so I can't tell if mouse keys work on it or not. Also, I was using the mouse keys feature because of the lack of a secondary and third mouse button on the Mac. [Bug 1] Legal barriers and possible solutions
Lot of legal problems occures related with media codecs. Please see this for ideas and brainstorming: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/multimedia-packages-policy In a nutshell, we would need a patent royalty broker (or other solution) to be able to legally serve media-codec libraries - in some - highly computerized - jurisdiction, at least.
