[Bug 1854576] [NEW] An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade

2019-11-30 Thread Gus
Public bug reported:

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade

This was likely caused by:
 * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
Please use the tool 'ppa-purge' from the ppa-purge
package to remove software from a Launchpad PPA and
try the upgrade again.

2019-09-10 Thread Gus Hoppes
I ran into this and fixed it by simply running:

ldconfig

This updates the links that were created from the compile you did to
build c-icap.

[Bug 1821763] Re: Xorg freeze

2019-03-29 Thread Gus
I tried uninstalling the extensions and reinstalling gnome-shell, but it
froze again today.

I am attaching a new journalctl file, this time I booted in recovery
mode to get the file so judging by the log timestamp it matches the time
when it froze, so this one should be more precise.

There is an entry about killing process "TabNine" because it ran out of
memory, this is a VSCode extension that I installed today, so I don't
believe the other freezes were caused by it. Could it be that Ubuntu is
freezing when it runs out of memory?

I will leave dstat running and logging to a file so maybe I can get some
info about memory when it freezes again. Any other tips for debugging?

Thanks in advance for the support.

[Bug 1821763] Re: Xorg freeze

2019-03-27 Thread Gus
Hi Daniel, thanks for the reply! I am attaching the prevboot.txt file.

This time the freeze happened while the machine was locked and I was
away, when I came back the screen was black and mouse and keyboard
weren't working. I can't pinpoint exactly when it froze, but looking at
the logs I believe it was around 4:15 PM.

I tried to ssh to the machine but the client froze after asking the
password, so I'm not able to get any logs from it while frozen.

Looking at the logs I can see some entries about Gnome Shell, I have
these extensions enabled, should I uninstall them?

- Alt-Tab Switcher Popup Delay Removal
- AlternateTab
- Clock Override
- Dash to Panel
- NoAnnoyance
- Sound Input & Output Device Chooser
- Start Overlay in Application View

[Bug 1712575] [NEW] Upgrade from Ubuntu 12.04 LTS to 14.04 LTS Server. Can't bring up eth0. RTNETLINK answers: no such process [61709.025401] bnx2: can't load firmware file bnx2/bnx2-mips-06-6.2.3.fw

2017-08-23 Thread Gus Hoppes
Public bug reported:

Hi. I just did a do-release-upgrade from Ubuntu Server 12.04 to 14.04
LTS. After the upgrade eth0 does not exist. Networking fails on boot.
Its on a Dell PowerEdge 2950 with one network connection and one static
address on eth0 only (dual nics, 2nd is not being used).

Here is the error I'm getting when trying to ifup eth0.

RTNETLINK answers: no such process
[61709.025401] bnx2: Can't load firmware file "bnx2/bnx2-mips-06-6.2.3.fw"
RTNETLINK answers: No such file or directory
Failed to bring up eth0.

If I check dmesg, I can see the same error that it can't load the
firmware file. I checked in /lib/firmware and the file is indeed there.

This could be a dupe of this bug. However, I was told to file a new one as it
is still an issue.

Hi. I just did a do-release-upgrade from Ubuntu Server 12.04 to 14.04
just as Jaap did. I got the same issue. The network card will not start.
Its on a Dell PowerEdge 2950 with a static address on eth0 only (dual
nics).

RTNETLINK answers: no such process

Is there a fix I can try?

[Bug 1602827] Re: NFS server "shutting down socket" during large file copies Ubunutu 14.04.4 LTS

2016-07-19 Thread Gus Hoppes
No this did not happen after an upgrade. I built 3 brand new ubuntu
14.04.4 LTS servers all pushing nightly backups to my NFS server. I have
no problem with the other two servers as their data is not large. They
still work fine. Its always the one with the large data that seems to
choke. Which of course is my main mail server.

I'll try the new upstream kernel and let you know how it goes. Thanks!

[Bug 1602827] [NEW] NFS server "shutting down socket" during large file copies Ubunutu 14.04.4 LTS

2016-07-13 Thread Gus Hoppes
Public bug reported:

This is very similar to bug 585657:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/585657
Difference is my server doesn't freeze, it closes the socket. System integrity
is still responsive.

I'm running NFS version 4 on Ubuntu 14.04.4 LTS and during large rsync
file copies (200MB+) they die midway. This is killing my zimbra email
backups :(. I haven't had the system freeze during this scenario but
what ends up happening is the copy fails on the client side and then my
NFS server shuts the socket down due to excessive failures. Smaller file
copies work perfectly fine.

Here are the client/server logs.

How can we fix this? I have a script that is broken now because of it.

[Bug 1256467] [NEW] lxtask says a process uses 16777216 TB of "RSS" (memory) instead of 3, 3 GB (aprox.)

2013-11-29 Thread Gus
Public bug reported:

This is a display bug: I was running a game , and it was using 1,3 GB of
RSS. I started lxtask and it displayed correctly the game was using 1,3
GB. However, then I loaded a more complex level in my game and I think
it was consuming about 3,2 GB (because I was watching it as it was
growing) of RSS. But lxtask "glitched" and showed the game was using
16777216 TB (tera bytes) of RSS. It was the only number "wrong".

Additional info:

my processor is intel i7 (x86_64) and I'm using lubuntu in 32bit. I was
running a steam game, with the optirun -b primus %command% parameter.

lsb_release -rd prints:

[Bug 1205452] Re: Eclipse unusable in Kubuntu Saucy (almost immediate JVM segfault)

2013-09-21 Thread Gus Bourg
This appears to be the same as eclipse bug 317763. The work around for
that bug works for this:

1) Open System Settings
2) Select Application Appearance
3) Select GTK
4) Change the GTK2 theme to anything but oxygen-gtk

It then opens the workspace.

[Bug 1087794] Re: Synaptics touchpad registers single finger touches as multitouch

2012-12-21 Thread Gus
This bug may affect me as well.

I'm running 12.10 on an asus 1215t laptop. AMD based.

The specific behavior in common is that using a single finger will
sometimes cause the page to scroll as if I had used two fingers. I was
on 11.04 previously and did not have this issue. Although I didnt use
multi touch then either.

I'm still trying to narrows the causes. There may be a relationship to
resuming from sleep with the behavior. I do not have any issues resuming
from sleep.

I plan to run: sudo evtest /dev/input/eventX > ~/evtest
the next time it misbehaves but wanted to lend another voice here.

[Bug 672978] Re: Installing Ubuntu 10.10 alternate gives Cd-rom related errors

2011-01-28 Thread Gus
This also affects 10.10 server 64 (and I believe 10.04 64 server as
well).

Looking at the downloaded file in winrar shows the same truncation. The
universal USB installer fails for the same reason.

I corrected the file names and was able to install successfully.

Universal USB installer appears to run some post installation scripts
and has settings for various ISOs. It might be possible to get them to
make corrections with their post install scripts.

Re: [Bug 584101] Re: Howto article fails to bring up Conversation Box.

2010-05-25 Thread Geoff Gus Stacey
Hi Mitch,

I have tried an earlier version of hplip and can get the "Conversation" Box
up and proceed right thru the Setup successfully. !

I felt that perhaps the installed version was at fault -- altho several
users insisted the already installed was the correct version.
But a later version pressumably could have been included in the upgrades I
recieved ?

This would explain how my notes show version 3.10.5 . . . wheras 3.10.2
worked for me.

Is this a Bug ?

[Bug 445849] Re: Highpitched Rattling like Sound with 5.1 Surround Configuration on Karmic Koala

2010-05-01 Thread Gus
Daniel, thanks for everything.

Is there anything else we can do to help get this moved forward?
Additional hardware profiles? I just did a fresh install of 10.04LTS 64
(with xfi audio). My sound started off muted. Unmuted and switched to
5.1 + mono in and had the same result.

Switching to 2ch and 1 mono in has restored sound for now.

Thanks again for sticking through this.

[Bug 480712] Re: 9.04-9.10 kernels on Intel D101GGC locks for 1-15 min, after unlock the date differs from hwclock

2010-03-05 Thread Gus
Same exact problem here with 9.10/Karmic Koala and the D101GGC. It's
been quite a while now - anyone else got any clues on this?

Thanks,

[Bug 445849] Re: Highpitched Rattling like Sound with 5.1 Surround Configuration on Karmic Koala

2010-02-17 Thread Gus
Sorry should have added: I have lost all sound once the desktop is
displayed. The ubu theme sound does not play. However the sound that
plays for log in (squeek tick sound?) does play. So sound is working at
some point.

[Bug 445849] Re: Highpitched Rattling like Sound with 5.1 Surround Configuration on Karmic Koala

2010-02-16 Thread Gus
I have lost all sound now. I'm unsure what happened. It seemed to happen
between reboots so it's possible a patch caused it. I'm debating between
doing a full install of 10.04 alpha 3 in a few days or installing 9.10
in my alt boot partition and then slowly adding patches up to current.

I suspect I have now tinkered with enough stuff trying to restore sound
that going forward is no longer viable in trying to help with a common
fix. Ugh.

[Bug 445849] Re: Highpitched Rattling like Sound with 5.1 Surround Configuration on Karmic Koala

2010-02-02 Thread Gus
I have this with a creative xfi on 9.10 64bit. Killing the the .pulse
dir resets the issue and I'm back to normal. However changing volume
seems to be causing it for me. Including setting the volume to max (via
the desktop slider).

I run at 5.1output with mono input. Previously to work around, one my
audio was corrupted, I would change to 4.1 output and that would work
until it got corrupted, then I'd change to something else. Once my
audio is corrupted though it stays corrupted (in that config). I get the
same rattle sound, although to me it sound more like high frequency
aliasing. Like when you try and record a 22khz sound when your sample
rate supports say only sound up 8khz. It sounds like artifacting. I
did not have this issue in 9.04.

There may be an issue with the flash plug in corrupting my sound as well
but I don't have a reproducible test case. Now that I can correct my
5.1 audio I should be able to add a test case. Thanks for all for
looking into this.

[Bug 482991] Re: Brasero hangs at "Get Size" process on 64bit Ubuntu 9.1

2010-01-20 Thread Gus
WORK AROUND same as #7.

I just ran into this. I had removed a cd by pressing the eject button on
the drive. The ejected cd's icon remained on the desktop.

I put my blank cd in. dragged in a few files, hit burn and got stuck on
size.

I clicked cancel on the requester (getting size) and then used the right
click menu on the desktop to unmount the previously ejected cd.

I then clicked burn again.

Worked.

Seems the bug would really be pressing the eject button on the drive
does not unmount the cd from the filesystem.

[Bug 119730] Re: Slow SATA performance

2009-12-23 Thread Gus
I have what I think is the same problem, and I think I've solved it by
installing the mainline kernel:

System:
AMD X2 3800+, 1GB RAM,
/dev/sda 1 TB
/dev/sdb 500 GB
/dev/sdc 500 GB

Symptoms:
Very slow reads (in particular) and writes to/from /dev/sda
hdparm -Tt reported /dev/sda as buffered reads at 50 - 60 MB/sec, however a cp
from /dev/sda to /dev/sdb occured at about 6 MB/sec, and a cp to USB occured at
1-2 MB/sec - during which the system was almost non-responsive - top showed
iowait at about 60%. Paging in/out of RAM is glacial.
I also tried adding various params to fstab (noatime, etc) and changing the
scheduler, to little effect.

Solution (please note, I'm running Ubuntu AMD64 with the nvidia driver blob!! -
your mileage may vary):
As recommended by guiguy (thanks!), I downloaded the mainline kernel. I also
needed nvidia drivers, so I followed the procedure here (post by Zeroth Eksaz
on 2009-06-12):
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-common/+bug/384639

In a nutshell, I went here
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/restricted/n/nvidia-graphics-drivers-180/
and downloaded
nvidia-180-kernel-source_185.18.36-0ubuntu9_amd64.deb
nvidia-180-libvdpau-dev_185.18.36-0ubuntu9_amd64.deb
nvidia-glx-180-dev_185.18.36-0ubuntu9_amd64.deb
nvidia-glx-180_185.18.36-0ubuntu9_amd64.deb
and installed them all with
sudo dpkg -i nvidia*185.18.36*

then I went here
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.32.2/
and downloaded
linux-headers-2.6.32-02063202-generic_2.6.32-02063202_amd64.deb
linux-headers-2.6.32-02063202_2.6.32-02063202_all.deb
linux-image-2.6.32-02063202-generic_2.6.32-02063202_amd64.deb
linux-source-2.6.32_2.6.32-02063202_all.deb
and installed them with
sudo dpkg -i linux*2.6.32*

I watched this process via iotop, and had disk reads and writes
generally less than 1-2 Mb/sec, with iowaits around 60% and the system
almost non-responsive. Booting into the new kernel (with nvidia still
working), I can now cp from /dev/sda to /dev/sdb at about 40 MB/sec
(though I've yet to extensively test it - it feels a lot more
responsive)

Now, I realise I'm running a newer kernel to that from before, so it's not a
like-for-like comparison, but I still think it's likely that guiguy's theory
(about the problem being with an Ubuntu kernel patch) is likely to be correct.
If people can suggest some tests for me to do that might help, I'll try and be
of assistance, but this is the main PC in my house, and is needed!
I'm certainly going to be wary about applying future ubuntu kernel upgrades!
(might try and stick with the mainline kernel - what a pain!)

Hope this is helpful, and Merry Christmas :-)

[Bug 369885] Re: lightning-extension makes thunderbird crash

2009-06-04 Thread Gus
In fact, I have got TB to crash without googlecal provider installed
(removed via synaptic) - however, prior to crashing it brings up error
messages (presumably because I removed it in synaptic, without disabling
it in thunderbird).

But apport doesn't detect the crash, or give an opportunity to report
it...

[Bug 369885] Re: lightning-extension makes thunderbird crash

2009-06-04 Thread Gus
I have a desktop and a laptop, both 64-bit, using thunderbird. I have
what seems like the same problem (get segfault) but only on the desktop
machine. I have copied the profile from the laptop to the desktop with
no apparent help.

Ie. with an identical profile, the desktop crashes, and the laptop
doesn't.

"When that happens, I can't start it again (constant segmentation faults)
unless I wait about an hour or so."
This is essentially what I experience.

I am running thunderbird, lightning and googleCal provider from the
repos.

"File a bug using apport..."
I have enabled apport, and have succeeded in getting TB to crash, but only with
googlecal provider enabled. However, I don't get any opportunity to submit a
bug report.
(I enabled it by typing "sudo force_start=1 /etc/init.d/apport restart")

Any suggestions appreciated..

[Bug 322564] Re: Creative X-Fi card not found after installing recommended kernel 2.6.27-11

2009-03-21 Thread Gus
Fixed / Solved
Okay, after seeing Flarkit's response I decided to take a little action.

I was already using XFiDrv_Linux_Public_US_1.00 release version.

I simply went back to where the driver had untarred the first time and
did this (while booted in Kernel 2.6.27-11)

sudo make:
That got a lot of errors and most likely is not needed.

I then did:
sudo make install

At the end of that I heard a pop from my speakers.

I rebooted into 2.6.27-11 and I had working sound.

Hope this helps.

Re: [Bug 49052] Re: no hfs+ journal support

2008-02-07 Thread Gus
Hi Luis,

I'm pretty sure that Linux is able to read/write hfs+ partitions,
however it ignores the journalling (ie. it treats a hfs+ partition as
hfs). I have a feeling that Feisty removed the hfs functionality because
of instability fears. It may be that Gutsy has replaced it..?

Alternatively, you could recompile your kernel adding HFS support...

(I'm not very knowledgeable about this, so take it with a grain of salt
- I've reformatted my ipod to FAT ;-)

Good luck,

If you follow the recommendations of powertop and do,

You wont be able to burn CDs, Nautilus says that there's a problem with

blank CD.

OK, before leaving to the office i did what you said,

Then i started loggin tail -n0 -f /var/log/syslog > /tmp/syslog

walked 4 block with my laptop powered on (no suspend no, hibernate)

When i got to the office the only network on the list was my home

would be even better that when i get to work again, Ubuntu could
remember which level of brightness i was using.

[Bug 158141] Problems with list refreshing in nm-applet

2007-10-28 Thread gus
Public bug reported:

Im running ubuntu 7.10 on Thinkpad T60 with intel wireless (ipw3945). I
think i will have to go back to ubuntu 7.04 as nm-applet just dosent
work as needed.

The only working scenario for nm is, boot your computer and use only one
network then shutdown your computer.

NM has serious problems trying to refresh the list of networks. For
example, if i go to my office from home (it's only 4 blocks away)
without shutting down the laptop, when i get to the office i will have
the same networks as in my house. There will be no way to refresh the
network list but rebooting the computer. If i plug a Ethernet wire it
does seems to work, but wireless networking is a mess.

Scanning never worked 100 % in 7.04 but quality has dropped even more in
gutsy.

[Bug 92345] Re: OpenOffice 2.2.0 RC3 - (Kubuntu Feisty Herd 5) crash when paste html text From a Browser.

2007-03-14 Thread GuS
Heres the output:

ii openoffice.org 2.2.0~rc3~oof680m10-0ubuntu3
OpenOffice.org Office suite

So, the same version as yours it seems that happen more often when
you copy images to from the website cause if you copy only text,
does not happen... so, maybe images and tables, styles, etc.

This, as i said, happen in amd64 version too.

This with latest feisty update/upgrade. I dont know before today... i
didn't tested.

[Bug 85844] fglrx power saving

2007-02-17 Thread gus
Public bug reported:

I have a Thinkpad T60 with an ATI X1300. I just finished installing
Ubuntu 7.04 Herd 4. When i was in edgy i used to preform this
[https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Fglrx_lowpower]
small hack to save battery life.

Problem is the following two files are missing,

/etc/acpi/fglrx-powermode.sh
/etc/default/fglrx

Note: Actually when i unplug the power cord the gpu of my card does not
scale down it's speed and then my battery drys faster.
