[Bug 1507542] Re: pepperflashplugin-nonfree is not updated with google-chrome's plugin version updates

2015-12-11 Thread Hans Hellén
Yes, it is not very clearly stated or warned that the user of this package has
to manually update the plugin by commanding:
update-pepperflashplugin-nonfree

Or do you mean that although a new version has been released a couple of days
ago, still the plugin are not updated because it is not "verified" by the
packaged maintainer(s), what ever it means. Check:
http://people.debian.org/~bartm/pepperflashplugin-nonfree/latest-stable-verified.txt
that is where the updates are being checked. Currently it says 19.0.0.245.
https://people.debian.org/~bartm/pepperflashplugin-nonfree/latest-stable.txt
currently 20.0.0.228.

This Compal is sold as Serval Performance (SerP4).

According to http://knowledge76.com/index.php/SerP4, a minor (?) difference
System76's SerP4:

This Compal:

2014-07-23 Thread Hans Hellén
About bisect:
None of the kernels work from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D, that is v2.6.24 and
above

4.2.3-2ubuntu7)) #1 SMP Wed Feb 25 23:56:54 UTC 2009" no sound devices were
found and v2.6.15 could not be installed).

Hardy Heron installation media has kernel
2.6.24-26-generic #1 SMP Tue Dec 1 18:37:31 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux
Ubuntu 2.6.24-26.64-generic.

Regression in kernels from 2.6.25-020625-generic onwards., at least.

there be some effort to find some remedy to the symptoms? The bug still

[Bug 1338960] [NEW] [HDA-Intel - HDA Intel, playback] CPU hangs in almost every minute, display jams, sound fails after a while

Public bug reported:

The playback used to work back in Hardy Heron. I just tested it in live
session with kernel 2.6.24-26-generic i686 today. But then recording
through stereo mics of the laptop did not work. This bug has been there
at least since Lucid Lynx.

The kernel in Hardu was Linux ubuntu 2.6.24-26-generic #1 SMP Tue Dec 1

Waking from suspend broke something: graphics distortion, sound playback
did not work anymore, sound setting could not be opened anymore.

[Bug 882566] Re: [Compal jfl92] CPU stalls in almost every minute: all processing stops, display jams, sound is breaking up.

2014-07-08 Thread Hans Hellén
Yes, thanks, I will do it soon.

In the mean time, I just tested Ubuntu 8.04.4 "Hardy Heron" i386 live
session and the CPU does not hang and the playback works! Recording
through laptop stereo mic does not work (only crackling noise). Just to
guess, could the bug be related to some repair efforts related to mics?

I think System76 has sold these Compals or its' sister model a couple of
years ago. Could they know something about how to fix this bug?

The Hardy was supported until 12 May 2011 and I first reported this bug
against Lucid in the autumn 2011. So could it be said that there has
happened a regression between Hardy and Lucid?

What does regression-release mean? I have tested several installations
from 12.04.1 to 14.10 (daily 6th July) in the past couple of days and
the bug is in every single one of them.

Yes, it also happens in Quantal live session. The reason why I could not
earlier reproduce this bug in Quantal, has to have something to do with
a connected USB soundcard.

2014-07-07 Thread Hans Hellén
apport information

** Description changed:

In syslog I was instructed to announce ALSA-developers: snd_pcm_delay
returned exceptionally high value. In the same time my VLC player ate
all of the available ram and had to be killed.

A bug has come back to my Compal JFL92 in 10.04 (I cannot say, was it in
the time of release already) and occurs also in live-CD sessions of
11.04 and 11.10. If there is not a continuous input (moving
mouse/touchpad or pressing keys), the system kind of jams (in 11.10 my
screen jams like a freeze-frame: eg. seconds/minutes in the clock and
gnome-system-monitor are not moving) and the music I am listening sounds
like coming from a broken CD (skipping/jumping a bit back in 10.04) or
like a jammed phonograph/vinyl record (in 11.10). Quite amazing, isn't
  it?

It might have something to do with kernel and chipset/motherboard. I
remember, that In 9.04 the OS did not even continue loading if I was not
ready to start moving my finger in the touchpad during splash to release
  the jam.

[Bug 882566] Re: [Compal jfl92] CPU stalls in almost every minute: all processing stops, display jams, sound is breaking up.

2014-07-07 Thread Hans Hellén
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/PositionReporting did don't help. Actually,
adding tsched=0 in the end of
load-module module-udev-detect
at /etc/pulse/default.pa made music to slowly, unsteadily crawl forward
crackling, a bit like playing a vinyl record in too slow rpm (also total jams
occured, still).

[Bug 882566] Re: [Compal jfl92] sound is breaking up

2014-07-06 Thread Hans Hellén
apport information

remember, that In 9.04 the OS did not even continue loading if I was not
ready to start moving my finger in the touchpad during splash to release
  the jam.

[Bug 496256] Re: 0421:0610 Nokia CS-15 USB modem does not work in Karmic - Raring depending on modem make

2013-12-24 Thread Hans Hellén
** Summary changed:

- 0421:0610 Nokia CS-15 USB modem does not work in Karmic - Raring depending on
modem firmware
+ 0421:0610 Nokia CS-15 USB modem does not work in Karmic - Raring depending on
modem make

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: network-manager
+
+ lsusb -vv reveals that there are different kinds of CS-15 out there. One
+ type does not react at all when plugged (see comment #60).

Installation done in Jaunty does not work anymore in Karmic. Also
installation (like in Jaunty) from a .deb file shipped within the USB
modem itself can not be done, because partition in the USB modem is not
mounted automatically and cannot be mounted via Nautilus. This leaves
  user without internet connection.

[Bug 992639] Re: Regression: Nokia CS-15 not working in 12.04

2013-12-24 Thread Hans Hellén
Interesting, the CS-15 stick with *smaller* IMEI can be used to
establish an internet connection using the workaround found above.

The stick with bigger IMEI does not show any sings of life.

Using 12.04 (precise) 64-bit, Linux 3.5.0-44-generic.

[Bug 992639] Re: Regression: Nokia CS-15 not working in 12.04

2013-10-06 Thread Hans Hellén
There seems to be different kinds of CS-15 modems out there. For two of my
devices lsusb -v gives
"wMaxPacketSize 0x0040 1x 64 bytes" for a modem with bigger IMEI
and
"wMaxPacketSize 0x0200 1x 512 bytes" for a modem with smaller IMEI.

The differences in behaviour with some current kernels can be found in
reported bug #496256 in comment #60.

[Bug 496256] Re: Nokia CS-15 USB modem does not work anymore and can not be installed in Karmic, Natty, Precise, Raring somehow depending on modem firmware

2013-09-23 Thread Hans Hellén
More testing is still needed. One CS-15 stick got nicely mode switched
by kernel v3.12-rc1, but the other stick has to be physically pluged in
and out tens of time until the mode get switched. Could there be some
hardware differences within CS-15 modems? There is one visible
difference between the sticks: the better one has numbers printed
(090426) on the metal plate above SIM card (and the IMEI code of the
better stick is about 40 000 bigger).

After waking up from suspend to RAM the modem has to be physically
pluged out and in in order to establish a connection with Network
Manager.

The long time stability of connection was not yet tested.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: network-manager

Installation done in Jaunty does not work anymore in Karmic. Also
installation (like in Jaunty) from a .deb file shipped within the USB
modem itself can not be done, because partition in the USB modem is not
mounted automatically and cannot be mounted via Nautilus. This leaves
  user without internet connection.

[Bug 496256] Re: Nokia CS-15 USB modem does not work anymore and can not be installed in Karmic, Natty, Precise, Raring somehow depending on modem firmware

2013-09-19 Thread Hans Hellén
I tried usb live session of 32-bit Ubuntu 13.04 (Raring Ringtail) and
saw a segfault (kernel, usb_modeswitch_dispatcher, libc-2.17) when
pluging physically the CS-15 out and immediately within 1–2 seconds back
in. Two times the mode was switched! But then even more than ten plug in
and out attempts did not make the modem usable. So, pretty useless as a
modem still.

Log about segfault is from attached mode-switched-on-Raring.txt:
Sep 19 10:13:53 ubuntu kernel: [ 236.649206] usb_modeswitch_[4011]: segfault

[Bug 496256] Re: Nokia CS-15 USB modem does not work anymore and can not be installed in Karmic, Natty, Precise depending on firmware

2013-09-19 Thread Hans Hellén
Christopher M. Penalver (penalvch), thank you for your effort.

Could you elaborate what is the point in flashing the BIOS on laptop? I
can assure you, the malfunction of CS-15 is not dependent on the
hardware platform on witch the modem is tried to be used. The modem
could be used somehow with some 2.6.x kernels, although it has probably
always been unstable. By the way, the firmware on my CS-15 modems was
the current R2.17 when doing the tests earlier this week.

So, is there development going on to make this, still an efficient,
modem to be usable? Or is it finally time to say goodbye to Nokia?

  Binary package hint: network-manager

Installation done in Jaunty does not work anymore in Karmic. Also
installation (like in Jaunty) from a .deb file shipped within the USB
modem itself can not be done, because partition in the USB modem is not
mounted automatically and cannot be mounted via Nautilus. This leaves
  user without internet connection.

[Bug 496256] Re: Nokia CS-15 USB modem does not work anymore and can not be installed in Karmic, Natty, Precise depending on firmware

2013-05-03 Thread Hans Hellén
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 992639 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/992639

Good news: Updating the firmware of CS-15 from R2.10 to *current* R2.17
helped. Now in Lucid Lynx the CS-15 is working out of the box, i.e. the
mode is switched automatically to 0x0612. If the connection turns out to
be unstable, I will report it here later.

With the older firmware CS-15 did not work in 13.04 Raring Ringtail
(live session, 32-bit). The mode did not change even by "eject /dev/sr1"
or "sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x0421 product=0x0612".

[Bug 992639] Re: Regression: 12.04 update breaks support for Internet Sticks (3G modems): Nokia CS-15, Nokia cs-17 and perhaps many others

2013-01-21 Thread Hans Hellén
Setting delay to 3 did not solve the issues for me on Lucid Lynx two
months ago.

As a workaround I bought a compatible WLAN station, to where the CS-15
is now attached. Those wireless access point devices cost about 30 €.

[Bug 882566] Re: [Compal jfl92] sound is breaking up

2012-11-14 Thread Hans Hellén
I tested this again today. No problems in Quantal live session using GUI.
Although, when I first time started to suspend by closing the lid, soon this
sound problem could be heard for about a second before suspending advanced and
the music stopped. It might be relevant, that during this first suspend stuff
was read from DVD, which did not happen during following suspend tests.

So, then I woke up the machine and continued the testing.

Interesting was that after pressing Fn + F3 music jammed for five
seconds. Fn+F3 should mean "Switch output display device", but actually
there is not a second display attached to this laptop. The five seconds
jam (both sound and graphical jam) occured every time those keys were
pressed. The jam lasted for five seconds even if I pressed some keys or
touched touchpad.

If I went to text based user interface (tty1) and pressed Fn+F3 then
this jam was like before: it could last more than five seconds and was
"randomly" repeated. On this occasion, touching touchpad or pressing
something on the keyboard released the jam.

All the above is at least double checked today.

If I first did not suspend, the jams could not be started. Pressing
Fn+F3 caused only a minor disturbance to music that was playing.

It might be relevant to point that iwl4965 Microcode SW error are
detected as the jam starts. There is some syslog attached.

Just to mention, the Ubuntu graphics shown during loading the OS, is
shown without disturbance/corruption when booting to Quantal.

The updated CS-15 was shown in lsusb but the mode was not switched to :0612, so

Strongly related to firmware version the CS-15 happens to have.

To sum up a CS-15 with an "original" firmware (x.62.40) does not work
anymore even in current Lucid Lynx (some kind of a regression). CS-15
with updated firmware works in Lucid and Precise, but is unstable, and
do not work in Quantal (live session).

[Bug 882566] Re: [Compal jfl92] sound is breaking up

2012-11-12 Thread Hans Hellén
I just tested the release version of Quantal Quetzal 12.10
(3.5.0-17-generic #28-Ubuntu SMP Tue Oct 9 19:32:08 UTC 2012 i686 i686
i686 GNU/Linux) as a live session. The sound was ok, but closing the
laptop's lid (without suspend option) and after opening it and going to
tty1 caused playing the music to jam as described above. Suspend itself
seemed to work, as I later tested it.

So what about tagging this as kernel-fixed-upstream-3.5.0-17?

[Bug 945582] Re: MythTV Status doesn't work with MythTV 0.25

2012-10-02 Thread Hans Hellén
When using the long-term support version 12.04 Precise Pangolin one
might find these lines helpful:

if /usr/bin/lynx -dump localhost:6544/Status/GetStatusHTML | grep -e "is

then echo "Recording Now";
fi

# In this year, 2012, one can use these funny lines to get the time of the next
recording in a decent format.
# You have to first do the complete conversion of mythtv-status as instructed
in the comment #4 above:
# scheduled next:
mythtv-status | grep " " | (read -n 19 i; echo $i;) | cut -c 12-16 >
~/recordings1-time.txt;
# Day
mythtv-status | grep " " | (read -n 19 i; echo $i;) | cut -c 5-6 >
~/recordings1-dd.txt;
# Month
mythtv-status | grep " " | (read -n 19 i; echo $i;) | cut -c 8-9 >
~/recordings1-mm.txt;
# in the end in a decent format:
