[Bug 382703] Re: Home Folder has 3 different names

2009-08-12 Thread Haz
+1 to username

The whole Home Folder concept is daft, because to me that means /home.
Although I know Home Folder is /home/*username*. If everyone turns to
Windows Vista (even though I hate it so much) it has changed My
Documents to *username* in the start menu and the sub-directories
inside of it is Documents, Music, etc etc...

You could have it *username* folder or just *username*... without
having the apostrophe s ['s], that way translation isn't a problem
because the name of the actual folder is *username* in the
/home/*username* location. Simple (right?). :)

[Bug 59361] Re: Icon folder browser doesn't show icons even as list

2008-05-14 Thread Haz
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 116443 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/116443

Sebastian, when I first reported this bug I mentioned the version of Nautilus
that my system had at that time, but I was not saying that Nautilus was the
package. I did not know the package involved.
The issue arose when trying to assign an icon to a launcher in the panel. bug
#116443 does seem to be the same as this.
I still have this bug in 8.04LTS Hardy.

[Bug 153702] Re: Dell Inspiron 530 SATA drive not detected in IDE mode

2008-04-28 Thread Haz
I can confirm a similar problem with 8.04 Hardy (LTSP Server) on Dell Vostro
200.
Had to use the 'all-generic-ide' boot option to boot.
I used hyphens - does it work the same with underscores (as quoted above)
rather than hyphens?

[Bug 94940] Re: Effect in Edgy

2007-11-12 Thread Haz
After setting up avahi in Edgy, a delay getting the password prompt was
introduced for ssh logins of about 7 secs.

Changing the hosts: line in Edgy (6.10) from:-
   hosts: files dns mdns
to:-
   hosts: files mdns4 [NOTFOUND=return] dns
per liquidweaver's suggestion, reduced the delay to under 1 second.

[Bug 3923] Re: Cannot change default character encoding

2007-11-07 Thread Haz
Above method does work reliably.
Only 1 of my Ubuntus will not accept it - but then it isn't reading the current
default locale of en_GB.UTF-8 either which is why its resorting to ANSI(ASCII).
I might try just reinstalling Gnome Terminal. The Ubuntu in question is a 6.06
LTS - but then others of these work OK.

Still it would be nice to have a Character Set option in GT Profiles.

[Bug 3923] Re: Cannot change default character encoding

2007-11-06 Thread Haz
A permanent config for the character set would be very useful. It has long been
a feature of PuTTY (Terminal Translation Chr Set).
It would be best set in Profiles (similar to PuTTY's saved session) rather than
globally, because its often required only for some specific purpose.

The only way I have been able to do this so far, as suggested in
http://osdir.com/ml/gnome.os.redhat/2002-10/msg00022.html, is to first setup
the required locale eg: via:
$ sudo locale-gen en_GB.ISO-8859-15
so that the new locale is listed by
$ locale -a
(as 'en_GB.iso885915').

Then I start GT like:-
$ env LC_CTYPE=en_GB.ISO-8859-15 gnome-terminal  ...  --disable-factory

But some of my Ubuntu's are resistant to enabling or using the new locale.
Although it is listed by 'locale -a' as above, when I try to start GT as
described above I get: gnome-terminal: 7773: ... locale not supported by C
library.
And yet I can select the same chr set from GT's Terminal Set Chr Encoding
menu!?
One of my GT's also shows its 'Current Locale' as 'ANSI_X3.4-1968' even though
this is not listed by 'locale -a' at all!?

Any helpful comments about these problems would be much appreciated.

[Bug 41147] Re: Wrong default paper size for printing

2007-09-19 Thread Haz
Thanks Georg - your advice to edit the PPD fixed the problem for me.

I have Dapper 6.06 LTS running OpenOffice 2.0.2 which was unable to
select A4 paper size for our Brother HL-6050. (My Edgy 6.10 running OO
2.0.4 doesn't have this problem) There is no newer deb from Brother, but
editing the PPD as you describe above did the trick.

[Bug 81694] Re: Abiword prints only once

2007-06-20 Thread Haz
I can confirm this bug in Xubuntu 6.10 with AbiWord 2.4.5.
I can print multiple times from gedit and Firefox, but only once each time I
open AbiWd - even with the same document. To get a second print from AbiWd I
have to close and re-open AbiWd, not just the document.

PS Jarno: you will probably need to install the package a2ps to allow
printing via Xfprint eg: from mousepad per Launchpad bug 41271.

[Bug 19101] Re: nautilus's clever anti-hax0r detection is really dumb

2007-05-05 Thread Haz
I had the same problems after a recent upgrade from Dapper 6.06LTS to
Edgy 6.10. It particularly affected HTML and XML files which I noticed
first in yelp - it opened these files in gedit. I also had similar
problems with icons like bug 41772. With .tar.gz archives I also got the
message No application suitable for automatic installation is available
for handling this kind of file.

The steps below fixed all these problems for me:-

It did not seem to be necessary to move or rename
~/.local/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache as reported by jefight for
7.04. I did actually do that first, but when I restored it again after
step 3 below, the problems remain fixed.

1. sudo update-mime-database /usr/share/mime

2. sudo dpkg-reconfigure shared-mime-info

3. $ killall gnome-panel
$ killall nautilus

[Bug 41772] Re: MIME misdetection makes file unopenable

2007-05-05 Thread Haz
I had similar, but not identical symptoms after a recent upgrade of Dapper
6.06LTS to Edgy 6.10.
Nautilus would not show me any icon images as an ordinary user, only as root. I
could not open them either. Nor could I see them in the icon browser (eg: via
launcher properties).
I also had similar MIME related problems with HTML, XML, and .tar.gz files as
reported in bug 19101 - the fix I detailed there cured all these problems for
me.

Happens every time try to Logout both from GNOME and XFCE. Ctrl-Alt-Bkspc

Add the kernel parameter 'clock=tsc' in GRUB (ie: to the 'kernel' line

[Bug 59507] gksu -u and 'Run as different user' (not root) problems

2006-09-08 Thread Haz
Public bug reported:

I'm not sure if this is a bug in gksu, a bug in Ubuntu 6.06, or just to
do with documentation.

In Breezy (5.10) I used to run several apps as another user on
the same machine via 'gksu -u other-username cmd'
(after giving the other user's password to gnome-keyring when prompted).
Now I've upgraded to 6.06 Dapper this fails. No prompt for password,
just the errors:-

Xlib: connection to :0.0 refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

unable to display :0.0

It works if I just do 'gksu cmd' to run the cmd as root, but not with
'-u username' to run the cmd as a different user.

Similarly, if I go via Gnome Apps System Tools Run as different
user, I can run commands as root, but not as any other user.

The solution I am using is to run 'xhost +local:' either manually from
the X session, or via Gnome System Prefs Sessions Startup Progs.
I'm not sure if this is the proper way to allow 'gksu -u' or if there is
a better way.

I did try creating /etc/X0.hosts (with a zero) and adding the line:
'local:', then restarting X. This seems to do part of the job: if I then
do 'xhost' it shows 'LOCAL:' as needed,
BUT if I do 'gksu -u otheruser cmd', or 'sudo -u otheruser xhost',
I just get the Xlib errors.
I've also tried lots of other possibilities in X0.hosts eg: 'localhost',
'username', '+local:', etc, etc.
I did make /etc/X0.hosts executable (755).

The password requirements have also changed: whereas I used to be
prompted by gnome-keyring for the pwd of the other user, now I just get
prompted (sudo - style) for my own pwd.

[Bug 59361] Icon folder browser doesn't show icons even as list

2006-09-07 Thread Haz
Public bug reported:

Choosing an icon eg: for a launcher via 'browse' opens a 2 pane 'Browse'
window. This browser is fine for getting to the folder you want, if you
know whats in that folder, but it only shows sub-folders not icons in
the folder. As you double-click down through the folders, and finally
double-click on a folder containing only icons it appears to be empty.
Once you understand this behaviour, you know to click 'Open' on any
folder that *might* contain icons, so that it opens the separate, single
pane 'Browse Icons' window, and shows whether there are any icons
there or not. Seems to me there are two problems with this:-

1. It is counter-intuitive, especially for newer users - you can easily
assume that a folder is empty when it is really stuffed full of icons.

2. It just makes finding the right icon so much harder that it already
is (because there are so many different folders to search).
