[Bug 1075193] [NEW] ndiswrapper is not loaded in ubuntu 12.10 amd
Public bug reported: I installed ndiswrapper from the Ubuntu store in 12.10 AMD to install windows drivers for a Toshiba C850 -F21E laptop with a Realtek Wireless adapter which works in Windows 7. When I try to install the driver it gives an error message saying the ndiswrapper module does not exist. I presume it is in the kernel. It loads the driver and says it found the hardware, buut is dos not work. I think there is a problem that the module is not included and does not install properly in the kernel. Yes, I followed the process in the reference above and checked that the utils 1.9 package and -common is installed. It gave me the outputs above and is not working. When I use the graphical package to install the wireless diver, it says it has a fatal error. ndiswrapper not installed When I close that comment, the driver is installed and the package says the driver sees the hardware but id does not work. Agree also on my 64 system. Packages like Google Earth and Skype which needs ia32libs cannot install in 10.04. ia32 libs needs urgent attention by the package managers for Ubuntu because attempts to install it fails as it is dependent on a range of packages which is not included in the Lucid repositories. This is when doing a clean install. When a upgrade is done ia32libs is there and google and skype works with it because it is the old version. There are many bugs reported in 10.04 which is a direct consequence of this packaging problem and it is urgent to fix it in my opinion. I can confirm that Grub only installs on hdo and provides not other options in the Lucid RC installer. I detects the Win7 drive , then changes the mbr so that win7 does not work and resets the computer if chosen. Choosing a linux kernel in grub works but win7 not. Can confirm it is still a problem with Kubuntu Lucid 10.4 RC. AMD 64 When I looked in System Monitor, I saw that the installer had only recognized one of my 4 processors and it was running 100%. It took about a hour to install and the quit before completion during the drive setup which could destroy data. I must disagree with Johnathan that this is acceptable. I imported contacts into the default resources ( named Personal Contacts by Akonadi) and that worked except for the cannot find resource agents proble which needs two restarts. I then created another addess book and imported another vcard file. I decided the second address book is the better one and deleted the first addres book. This resulted in two problems. 1. I now could not access any contacts in email. There is no connection between contcats and the email addresses. 2. I tried to create another addres book to import another vcard file and that timed out with message :Could not add address book: Agent instance creation timed out. I have just found a solution which works for my AMD 64 system and got skype working. I extracted the libs folder from the deb file Raphael mentioned above with ARK and then copied the contents to /libs 32 under root. I have 5 computers and run the latest Kubuntu Jaunty 64 on 3, Ubuntu Jaunty 64 on one and Vista on the last . The weird thing is I can see the vista and ubuntu shares in dolphin and nautilus and windows. I cannot see the kubuntu shares. I filed this bug in the wrong place first. See comments below. Comment from pfoo Try running samba using smbd -i (you might use sudo). I think you are going to get an error about pid file. Look into your smb.conf, pid directory is set to file:///var/run/samba wich is false. It must be /var/run/samba In my opinion, this is a bug in kdenetwork-filesharing (kde control module for samba). If you check in kde samba config (kcmsambaconf), tab advanced and select locking, you will notice that if you try to change pid directory the tool wants you to select a file instead of a directory ... So, when kcmsambaconf changes smb.conf (for me, it happened when i passed my security level from user to share) it will add an extra file:// at pid directory line. Was continuing the testing today whilst working and saw that the mouse is frozen but the keyboard was still working. Attached xorg.old. The mouse is a normal microsoft 3 button mouse. Only way to fix is to restart or shutdown with switch off button on computer. When restarting, all widgets added to plasma panel at bottom is gone and plasma panel is rescaled to smaller size as if it was a 1024 x 1048 screen. Here is the other files. I reinstalled the latest jaunty snapshot of today. I did extensive testing with all possible combinations this weekend and the bottom line is the 180.35 and 173.14.16 drivers crash when doing any type of operations with plasma on amd 64 infrastructure. I switched off any kwin effects and tried all the drivers including the 71.86.08. Yes Jonathan. I use the 180.35 driver which is in Jaunty and it crashes during boot after log in. Also, the driver does not load correctly with the the 2.6.28.8 kernel first boot line. I have to load with the recovery line by pressing resume normal boot. I also tried the 173 and 170 drivers, The 173 driver does not work. It says module missing when I run sudo nvidia-xconfig When I used it before, it loaded with the restore function, but crashed. Hallo Jonathan, I removed all the screen widgets and moved kdepim back to using the normal files (Not Anakondi) and it is now working like a charm. No crashes the whole day. I think the Plasma crashes was caused by some of the widgets. I know there is a definite problem with Anakondi integration with the calendar and contacts resources which caused the error messages. My kde 4.2 RC1 is stable and working well on my nvidia 64 today after the changes I made last night. I will wait for 4.2 in 2 days and see what is does and report back. Thanks for the support. Sebastiaan, Under updates I had all 4 tabs checked and I used the Ubuntu update manager which told me there where updates available. When it run it told me that it will remove Evolution. I thought that I needed to reinstall it again afterwards, but as can be seen from bug report it broke my installation and does not allow me to reinstall evolution at all. This is my primary PIM and I have all my contacts and hundreds of emails which is now inaccessible. I have done the same procedure many times before and am not alone in this. Ubuntu needs to take care of this situation because it has already broken many installations which did the same as I this today. It has catastrophic results and is a real crisis which locks ubuntu users out of their main application software. This needs a action now by Ubuntu bug or no bug. Jackie, The problem with open office is not the same driver problem reported here. OOO2.4 and OOO3.0 call a specific font which is sometimes missing in the system. I fixed the problem in Ubuntu by going to the system-preferences-appearance-fonts and changing the fonts there. Problem now fixed. There was a font file which OOO3 was looking for missing. I changed the systems fonts and the txt is back. OOO3 developers needs to make sure to use generally available open source font which is in all distros. Hallo Chris, what is a locale? I checked the -l10n packages and have 3 installed. common, en and za language support. I also upgraded the system today to openoffice 3.0 to see if it will help and the same problem still exist. It works correctly on all my other 5 computers with both 2.4 and 3.0 but not the one I have just reformatted and reinstalled with Ubuntu 8.10. ( All the others run the same operating system in both Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Xubuntu and it works) . It is a AMD 64 with Nvidia drivers and it worked before with OOO. So is 2 of my other computers. It seems that it has a common file missing. Could it be a font? There is no text in any of the menus anywhere. I checked and have made sure the language support and all packages I could see in the repositories is installed. I have now installed the 27.8 kernel with the pci=nomsi boot option. The standard kernel goes through the motions and then shuts the monitor down in Kubuntu. It works in Ubuntu and with the recovery option. I tried the pci=nomsi option and switcing of APIC, NOAPIC etc and it would not boot. I can boot slax 6.0 and dsl 4.4.3. The lspci output is attached. It seems there is no drivers in the Kernel for this system. I would like to run Kubuntu 8.10. The system exists with Kernel panic and after pci=nomsi it hangs by saying tty1 spawning too fast, stopped. After todays updates, I ran a test with the pclinuxos newsletter file and it still crashes with many instances of Konquerere trying to open in a unending loop. I am using kubuntu 4.1.2 beta with kmal 1.10.1. Also if i add a second sendmail server new, it does not send mail if i use the send queued messages. I think that once the sendmail system cannot send for whatever reason, it blocks the sendmail even if the correct server is added. The fault trace says it is soffice.bin which is crashing. So think it should stay with openoffice.org. Wish somebody would do something about this bug. Chris, I use Kubuntu and ran your procedure after switching on apport. It comes back with crash report is damaged. Same happens if I try to run backtrace after crash. Do I need to install or enable anything else? Yes Chris, The bug was introduced with the new download I got yesterday which is the version you mentioned. I tested it again and is happened with all the modules of open office when I close them.
