[Bug 1970292] Re: ubuntu failed upgrade from 21.10 to 22.04
Thank you. I do not know which exact mirror my system used because "Software & Updates" merely identified it as in Canada. When I google "how do i tell which mirror is used" all I get back is how to get the fastest mirror. If I have a problem with a mirror how do I know WHICH mirror I had a problem with? Why is there no message as part of the output of do-release-upgrade which identifies the mirror, especially when reporting that there is a problem communicating with the mirror? The error message: Connection timed out [IP: 91.189.91.38 80] nslookup 91.189.91.38 38.91.189.91.in-addr.arpa name = banjo.canonical.com. I am puzzled because that is not a Canadian address, yet I specifically requested a Canadian mirror. If I can identify the mirror how do I determine to whom I should communicate the fact that I had a problem? As soon as I selected the "Main mirror" "Software & Updates" detected that the system was out of date and refreshed, and apt required that I update and upgrade my software. It is entirely reasonable that some mirrors are not up to the very latest levels right now as demand will be low until the automatic upgrade is enable. My main interest in installing 22.04 on this one of my three computers is that it is a recent laptop from System 76 and therefore has some unique hardware and microcode requirements including very recent drivers which required that I upgrade to 21.10. My other computers were all still on 20.04 and can therefore wait until the dot release comes out. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1970292 Title: ubuntu failed upgrade from 21.10 to 22.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-release-upgrader/+bug/1970292/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

When I opened my laptop today the delete key stuck. Since the active window was displaying the directory of my home folder EVERY SINGLE FILE AND DIRECTORY was deleted. Just a reminder that I am waiting for instructions as to what documentation to collect for this problem. [Bug 1871914] [NEW] gnome does not complete initialization
Public bug reported: I installed Ubuntu 19-10 on a slightly-used Dell Optiplex 9020. When I boot normally Gnome does not complete initialization, so I am left viewing the blinking light logo and never get the opportunity to log into the system. I have applied every update to 19-10 as it has become available and the problem persists. The only way I can get the system to come up is to press the ESC key to get to the GRUB menu and then boot from the GRUB menu. In that case the system comes up normally. Also for some reason when I do get to the GRUB menu I am unable to select Advanced Options. Pressing down skips to Memory Test. This is only a minor annoyance but I would like to know what documentation to collect to understand why I can boot the system from the GRUB menu but not by default. [Bug 1660574] Re: IPv4 Address Lost 8 Days After Previous DHCP Allocation
I had this issue yesterday on 17.10. The IPV4 address for my Ethernet interface vanished. I could not find any option in the network portion of settings to ask the DHCP for the IP address, and sudo service network-manager restart did not recover, so I rebooted the system. This is obviously an extremely rare situation and I do not know how to reproduce it. [Bug 1477330] [NEW] open new folder in tab should put new tab on top
Public bug reported: In the files menu if the user selects the option to open a folder in a new tab it seems obvious to me that the user wants to immediately start working in that folder. However the new folder is opened behind the current folder, so the user must explicitly select the new folder to work on. I cannot think of any logical situation in which after opening a new folder the user would prefer to continue working in whatever random folder currently happens to be on top. I cannot find any tweak that controls this behavior. [Bug 1473794] [NEW] network response very slow
Public bug reported: For the last 48 hours all internet access has been extremely slow. Prior to that time there was no problem. I tried rebooting the modem but that only provided temporary relief. After the 3rd reboot I asked my ISP to replace the modem. That did not resolve the issue. I have two computers connected to the modem, a laptop running 15.04 vivid vervet kernel 3.19.0-22-generic which is connected both by Ethernet cable and wifi, which displays excessively slow response, and a desktop running 14.04 which is connected by Ethernet cable only which shows normal performance. There are also problems with the network manager app which frequently no longer appears when resuming from suspend and if it does appear shows no useful information and does not support connecting by wifi. These problems only started occurring about 48 hours ago, so I suspect the last package installed, which is webkitgtk. [Bug 1392460] Re: resume hang ubuntu 14.10 kernel 3.16
On a reboot the backlight is turned on very early in the process, before the driver is loaded, probably by the bios. This is obvious because grub is able to display, so on a reboot the driver does not have to turn on the backlight, it is already on, whereas on a resume the backlight needs to be explicitly turned on by the operating system since the bios is only involved to the extent of signalling the ACPI state. However even if there is a bug in the bios with respect to supporting whatever mechanism the driver is attempting to use to manage the hardware display state, on Ubuntu 13 and earlier the display was occasionally turned on by resume, whereas now it is never turned on. [Bug 1392460] Re: resume hang ubuntu 14.10 kernel 3.16
I am really desperate to resolve this problem. I installed xbacklight, closed my laptop, reopened the laptop, saw the disk activity that indicated the system had resumed from suspend. I entered Ctrl-Alt-T blindly, entered xbacklight -set 100. Nothing happened. Entered vbetool dpms on. Nothing happened. I previously tried both commands while the system was running normally and saw nothing to indicate that they didn't work. However both tools are dependent upon the driver working to implement the standard interfaces that the tools use. All I want is a command that I can issue to turn on the bloody light bulb! If I had such a command I could add it to the script that runs when the lid is opened and I could get off everybody's back. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1392460 Title: resume hang ubuntu 14.10 kernel 3.16 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1392460/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

On 11/28/2014 12:32 AM, Christopher M. Penalver wrote: James Cobban, as the article now more specifically advises, one would have to uninstall bcmwl first before installing the mainline kernel. As well, the article does not advise to run linux-headers-3.18* to uninstall a package. It advises to do the exact package name on a per package basis. OK. I removed the bcmwl proprietary driver. I downloaded the 3 .deb files for amd64. You provide no procedure for performing that download in any obvious way. For example how am I supposed to obtain the proper names for a wget command or to download them by ftp to a specific directory. In Firefox double clicking on each entry downloads it into the Downloads directory, not into the recommended separate directory. This is part of what I mean when I say your documentation is vague. I installed, and booted. The system now boots on kernel 3.18-rc6. There is no observable change in behavior from kernel 3.16. The system displays disk activity consistent with normal resume processing, but the back-light on my display is not turned on, so I have no choice but to manually reboot even though the system is completely operational in all other respects. For example I can ssh, ftp, even http to the system. Kernel 3.16 seems to have resolved all of the actual suspend/resume problems I had on previous releases. But at least most of the time the earlier kernels and drivers would turn on the back-light when they felt like resuming at all. I would stop bothering the kernel group and the X.org team if someone would just give me a manual command to turn on the damn light! I can ssh into the system to issue the command. -- Jim Cobban webmas...@jamescobban.net mailto:webmas...@jamescobban.net?subject=Email%20Message Web-site: www.jamescobban.net http://www.jamescobban.net/ 34 Palomino Dr. Kanata, ON, CANADA K2M 1M1 +1-613-592-9438 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1392460 Title: resume hang ubuntu 14.10 kernel 3.16 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1392460/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1392460] Re: resume hang ubuntu 14.10 kernel 3.16
I am trying to follow the instructions for installing these kernels, but there is clearly something wrong. Firstly the installs all fail with the following known bug: bcmwl-kernel-source 6.30.223.248+bdcom-0ubuntu1: bcmwl kernel module failed to build [error: macro alloc_netdev requires 4 arguments, but only 3 given] Edit Ubuntu “bcmwl” package Bugs Bug #1358966 This is obviously a simple error which could be fixed in a minute. I suspect it is the failed installation that causes the resulting system boot kernel panic because of a missing init. Secondly when I issue the specified command in the web page to remove the 3.18 headers and kernel the following happens: sudo apt-get remove linux-headers-3.18* linux-image-3.18* Reading package lists... [Bug 1392460] Re: resume hang ubuntu 14.10 kernel 3.16
I have tried to upgrade the microcode. I rebooted into Windoze and ran the .exe. I see no difference in the value of microcode in /proc/cpuinfo, so I don't know that it took, but I did run the upgrade command, and sat there while it displayed its progress indicator. I tried installing the 3.18 kernel but it failed, as I reported, and nobody has got back to me to suggest what I did wrong in the installation. I have tried using the proprietary ATI driver. If I manually suspend the system and restart it does recover correctly with the proprietary driver. However with the proprietary driver if I close the lid and then reopen it the system does not resume at all. That is the only result is that I hear a clunk after the lid is opened, so obviously the BIOS recognized that the lid had opened, but there is no disk activity, and the keyboard is not enabled so the only recover is holding down the power button. With the open source driver the system reliably recovers on Ubuntu 14.10 kernel 3.16 (which it did not do on 14.4 with kernel 3.13) However the backlight is not turned on so I cannot do anything. I have been having that problem with the Xorg driver for several years now and when I ask their development group how to give the driver a kick to turn on the backlight their response is the driver should do that for you. So I ask them again and every time the response is the driver should do that for you. Why they cannot just add a command to turn the gd light on I do not understand. I guess they are purists. I have even tried reformatting the partition and reinstalling 4.10 from scratch. I am encountering input problems with the Nvidia ---185 driver on my laptop. The symptoms are not exactly like those described by others on this thread. The mouse moves the graphics cursor, but pressing a mouse button has no effect. Most keyboard input still works. For example to shutdown an app I can Alt-F, use the up and down arrows to select the quit item, and then press Enter to select the item. However the Ctl-Q shortcut does NOT work. Ctl-Alt-F1 switches to the console. But since I am a newbie I don't know what I should do in the console. I can telnet into the system with the frozen UI and nothing looks at all unusual. top shows everything running fine, with the various processes as idle as you would expect when no input can get into the processes from the keyboard or mouse. When the freeze occurs the only thing I can do to recover is sudo reboot. I have examined the logs and from my limited experience of linux I can see nothing whatsoever out of the ordinary. In the main message log, for example there are typically no messages whatsoever for several HOURS prior to the message generated by the sudo reboot command. Ubuntu 9.10 release notes have details about disabling KMS (nomodeset) Have a nice day Before I start changing something in a system configuration file I really like to understand what I am doing. So bear with me. There is no grub.cfg file in my configuration. Rather the equivalent information appears in menu.lst. I believe this has to do with whether grub 2 or 1 is used. I don't know much about either version or what I would need to do to migrate. It has taken me long enough to learn how to manipulate menu.lst. I would rather not have to complicate my life by learning an alternative configuration technique. Looking at my copy of menu.lst I see the text that you suggest changing. Specifically the menu.lst entry for the Karmic Koala kernel is: titleUbuntu 9.10, kernel 2.6.31-14-generic root(hd1,0) kernel/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic root=UUID=f900070e-2701-4360-98c3-68bc817d012b ro quiet splash initrd/boot/initrd.img-2.6.31-14-generic quiet I see the release note item No Xv support for Intel 82852/855GM video chips with KMS which suggests nomodeset although the problems reported here are completely unrelated to what I am observing. It took me a lot of hunting around to understand what was actually being suggested, as the vast majority of relevant pages just assumed that everybody already knows what KMS was about. Please correct me if I am misunderstanding this: In Karmic Koala screen mode setting has been moved by default from X11 down into the kernel in order to fix a number of problems. However it would appear that there are some minor problems in the kernel code with respect to some Intel video chips. The chipset on my computer is even older than the ones mentioned in the 9.10 release notes. Changing the kernel setting to nomodeset forces the old functionality in X11 to be used rather than the new kernel code. -- Jim Cobban jamescob...@sympatico.ca 34 Palomino Dr. Kanata, ON, CANADA K2M 1M1 +1-613-592-9438 -- hang in Karmic Koala https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/477918 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I am not running a laptop, but I got this crash, and I would like to be able to suspend my desktop as a power saving feature. In previous releases I could not do this because there was a problem in the display driver with respect to the specific Intel graphics chip on my desktop, which meant that the display was always severely corrupted upon resume. With the upgrade to 9.10 the display driver now correctly restores the display on resume, however I have encountered a probably related, and separately reported, problem that the display hangs at some random interval between 2 minutes and 2 days after a restart. Although everything in the system is running fine (as evidenced by the ability to access server functions), the system is useless for local operations because the display is frozen. So far the only resolution I have is to power down the system. If I do not get a resolution quickly I will have to restore an earlier version of the display driver, but I do not want to do that in a hurry in case the support team asks me to collect some additional diagnostic information. However so far nobody has suggested anything I can do. So if the support team does not get back to me very soon, I will back out the driver and then be unable to help the community. -- [Karmic][Aspire 3620] Kernel oops during suspend... [Bug 477918] [NEW] hang in Karmic Koala
Public bug reported: The GUI hangs after running for between 5 minutes and 2 hours. There is no visible response to keyboard input. The cursor moves in response to mouse movements, but the cursor icon does not change as it is moved between windows. So far the only recovery found is to power-off restart the system. The underlying system is still running, as evidenced by responses from Apache and other servers to requests made from other systems on the local network. The only problem is the display. I suspect this is a problem in the Intel Graphics driver, as it is obviously hardware specific. I hope that ubuntu-bug collected information that is useful, but I will willingly collect any other info you need. [Bug 469101] [NEW] Select Lists not expanding on www.familysearch.org
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: firefox-3.5 On the page: http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/search_census.asp the selection lists do not expand. This page, and the rest of the familysearch site, works fine with firefox 3.0, and of course with IE. Even if technically there is a problem with the JS on this page, this is too important a site to be made inaccessable. Certainly I am forced to revert to 3.0. [Bug 377290] [NEW] Edit Paste Special cannot toggle Notes by ctl-O
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: openoffice.org On the Edit Paste Special dialog ctl-O does not toggle the Notes check- box. You must use the mouse to toggle Notes. Ben Crisford wrote: First of all - thanks for taking the time to report this bug :). Would you mind being a bit more specific? What openoffice program are you using? (i.e. writer? spreadsheet? draw? etc.) Cheers :D, Ben ** Changed in: openoffice.org (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete Thank you for the swift response. I am using spreadsheet. To clarify I can toggle any of the options except Notes by pressing either the underlined letter of the label on the check-box, or holding down Ctl and pressing the letter. [Bug 375488] [NEW] Resume after Suspend Screen Jitters
Public bug reported: On Intrepid Ibex and Jaunty Jackalope when resuming after Suspend there seems to be a timing problem in the display driver that causes the display to jitter horizontally whenever there is main processor intensive activity. Amount of jitter depends upon activity running from a few pixels up to 1/3rd of the screen width. The system becomes only marginally usable among other reasons because it is hard to mouse click on widgets that are small compared to the amount of jitter.
