[Bug 1773520] Re: After update to 4.13-43 Intel Graphics are Laggy

2018-05-31 Thread James Payne
Just to update, have tested the 4.15 kernel as well and that is also
working well and doesn't show the 40fps lag/slowdown issue

James

[Bug 1773520] Re: After update to 4.13-43 Intel Graphics are Laggy

2018-05-31 Thread James Payne
Hi Joseph

Linux hp-green 4.13.0-45-generic #51~lp1773520 SMP Wed May 30 17:15:11
UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Just tried that one and it fixes the issue, I haven't had a chance to
test the second yet, but will try later tonight hopefully

James

[Bug 1773520] Re: After update to 4.13-43 Intel Graphics are Laggy

2018-05-29 Thread James Payne
Hi Joseph,

Kernel 4.17-rc7 still has the same issue, been digging though and have
found a possible cause

(Ignore the name of the bug...)
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=103497

This came from the following post on a Manjaro forum
https://forum.manjaro.org/t/poor-opengl-performance-on-linux-4-14/35453

The drm-tip kernel does indeed resolve the issue for me bringing back
60FPS lock on the vsync'ed app I'm working on.

Regards
James

I've added kernel-fixed-upstream tag - though note that it's not the
head but the drm-tip branch which has the working kernel

[Bug 1597079] Re: AMDGPU Black Screen when Booting

2016-10-27 Thread James Payne
Hi Christopher,

How can I assist further with this? A lot of the original attachments my
system uploaded via the bug panel have been deleted from this report.

Just so you know the only way you can get the system to boot to being
usable is via nomodeset which I believe won't load the AMDGPU driver at
all (assuming this is valid with ubuntu as well
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AMDGPU)

I have cross posted this in the freedesktop bugzilla as well as I don't
believe this is an ubuntu specific bug.

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=97605

I have also tried with 16.10 recently but get the same results as 16.04
so it doesn't seem to be fixed in the later kernel :(

Regards
James

Can confirm I am now on the latest BIOS, F19 as of writing. Still seeing
the same issue, OS boots into a black screen, again ubuntu boot sounds
still are played so the laptop is working normally bar the graphics.

I've just ran a full update as of today and rerun the apport info

[Bug 1597079] Re: AMDGPU Black Screen when Booting

2016-07-05 Thread James Payne
Just to update I have tried the nomodeset parameter previously (sorry
hadn't put that in the description)

The OS does load and you get visuals but its using the software
rendering and will only allow 800x600 resolution and refuses to change
to anything other than that.

Just to note I have tried the AMDGPU-PRO beta driver v16.30 (just on the
off-chance) since posting, and it does allow you to boot with full
1920x1080 resolution to the logon screen. Attempting to log on either
causes a complete crash or display corruption though.

I will look at the BIOS update in the meantime :)

Any thing else I can do please let me know as this Ubuntu install isn't
doing anything else at the moment so I can play ;)

[Bug 1597079] Re: AMDGPU Black Screen when Booting

2016-06-28 Thread James Payne
Apologies... forgot to mention:

This affects ubuntu 16.04
uname -a

Linux hp-grey 4.4.0-28-generic #47-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jun 24 10:09:13 UTC
2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I have tried the following mainline kernels and they don't seem to have made
any difference

v4.7-rc5-yakkety/
v4.4.4-wily/

Running with nomodeset allows the GUI to show up in 800x600 but doesn't
allow any resolution change.

Output of xrandr --listproviders just says "Can't open display "

Please let me know if I can be of any further help

James

[Bug 1597079] [NEW] AMDGPU Black Screen when Booting

2016-06-28 Thread James Payne
Public bug reported:

For reference this problem is very similar to #1577074

However, the laptop is simply booting to a black screen on 16.04, the
backlight is on but there is no display. Sound is working so I can hear
the ubuntu logon noise and can SSH from another machine.

During boot the screen on the laptop looks as if it is flashing off and
on trying to set modes or something similar, I'm guessing this is the
looping shown in the output below

Errors from dmesg are as follows:

[ 40.744416] [drm:amdgpu_resume [amdgpu]] *ERROR* resume 4 failed -2

I get a simliar issue to you on my A10-8780P, although on 16.04 I can't
even get it to boot without nomodeset as the blackscreen is as far as it
gets. Not even sure to know where to begin getting more info on that

It does seem to work with the fglrx driver on 14.04 (although even then I had
to boot using nomodeset before installing the fglrx driver as I had a similar
black screen issue there)

Are these issues related?

Hi,

I got rid of this system a while back but at the time it had GOS google
gadgets installed with no sign of the problem. Given that GOS is based
on ubuntu it seems likely its already fixed.

2008-12-02 Thread James Payne
Sorry,

but this was one of our developement PC's here and has now been setup to
use Suse. The problem appeared to be related to the change in XORG and
lack of supprt in the early releases of fglrx and configuration tools.

I don't have any other simlar hardware PC's running ubuntu currently so
I'm unable to confirm/ deny its current state.

[Bug 228333] Re: firefox 3 beta 5 z-ordering incorrect for embedded bjects in some pages

2008-05-12 Thread James Payne
I've done some more testing on this and it seems like its more likely a
bug in adobe flash. As the problem doesn't occur in firefox 2 or opera
in windows but affects both when run on Ubuntu.

The trouble is GNash etc aren't really pratical alternatives as the
version of flash they support is quite old.

** Changed in: flashplugin-nonfree (Ubuntu)
Sourcepackagename: firefox-3.0 => flashplugin-nonfree

[Bug 225193] Re: ubuntu 8.04 displayconfig-gtk not in menus

2008-05-06 Thread James Payne
That doesn't seem exactly intuitive especially for a new user coming
straight from windows. Also does the same apply for Xubuntu?
displayconfig-gtk doesn't seem to be in the menus there either.

Whilst manual configuration would probably work a lot of windows users
get a bit nervous at the thought of editing a system file in a text
editor. A lot of business setups probably use dual displays. We
certainly have around 35 PC's with dual displays at my company.

[Bug 225193] Re: ubuntu 8.04 displayconfig-gtk not in menus

2008-05-02 Thread James Payne
I take your point but the standard resolution tools don't give you the
ability to control dual displays i.e whether you have an extended
desktop or cloned display.

I thought this tool was a great improvement over the native gnome and
XFCE tools and it seems like a step backward to take it out.

bizzarely I can't make this happen with a differnet machine running the

Very strange because it did it consistently over a couple of tries I
eventually partitioned using Part ed magic Live cd.
