[Bug 935713] [NEW] Can no longer drop tabs onto tabs area

2012-02-18 Thread Jani Uusitalo
Public bug reported:

With Chromium 17, I can no longer drag 'n' drop tabs to reorganize them
in an existing window: the tabs area no longer lets me drop tabs onto
it, so each tab I pick up gets a new window when dropped. Dragging the
tab from the new window into the old won't work either (cannot drop the
tab into where the tabs area should be).

[Bug 935681] [NEW] "Restart services during package upgrades without asking?" fails to honor --yes for apt-get

2012-02-18 Thread Jani Uusitalo
Public bug reported:

I left an old netbook to do an "apt-get -y dist-upgrade" overnight, and
when I returned to it the next morning, the upgrades were unfinished
because libc upgrade was waiting for me to respond to "Restart services
during package upgrades without asking?"

It looks like the question is prioritized depending on whether the
upgrade is done on desktop or not, and if it's not, the priority is set
critical. According to documentation [1], critical is for "Items that
will probably break the system without user intervention." I don't think
restart-without-asking satisfies that condition.

[Bug 926012] Re: With a -pae kernel, freeze during boot when wistron_btns loaded

2012-02-18 Thread Jani Uusitalo
With both 3.2.0-16 and 3.2.0-17, what I said in #8 still holds, with -16
and -17 behaving just as -15 did. 3.2.0-17 added something interesting
though: booting 3.2.0-17-pae in recovery mode "breaks" the -pae's like
(non-recovery booting) 3.2.0-14-pae does. To be sure, I tried recovery
booting other kernels going back to 3.2.0-14, and couldn't reproduce
this with them (not even with 3.2.0-14-pae!) . Recovery booting 3.2.0-17
non-pae also doesn't bring it on, it's just recovery booting
3.2.0-17-pae.

The steps to reproducing this freeze with 3.2.0-17 are:
1. Boot 3.2.0-17-pae in recovery mode.
2. In the recovery menu, select "root".
3. From the root prompt, just reboot.
4. Boot 3.2.0-17-pae (normally).

The "fix" also still holds: just boot a non-pae kernel once, and the
pae's again work.

[Bug 926012] Re: With a -pae kernel, freeze during boot when wistron_btns loaded

2012-02-11 Thread Jani Uusitalo
After dozens and dozens of boots with the 3.2.0-14 and 3.2.0-15 kernels,
here's what I know.

1. This *is* tied to wistron_btns as I reported. Without it, boot never fails
(the way I initially reported, though I'll redefine what "fails" means further
below).
2. With non-pae kernels, boot never fails.
3. With 3.2.0-14-pae, the boot always fails.
4. A cold boot with 3.2.0-15-pae never fails.
5. A re-boot with 3.2.0-15-pae after a *non-failing* boot never fails.
6. A re-boot of 3.2.0-15-pae, after a *failing* boot (of 3.2.0-14-pae for
instance), is *almost* sure to fail. I'd give it a 10% chance of not failing.

If you put it another way, this appears is pretty interesting:
1. You can "break" 3.2.0-15-pae by booting 3.2.0-14-pae first.
2. You "fix" a thus "broken" 3.2.0-15-pae by booting a non-pae kernel.

I suspect this brokenness is actually hidden in the hardware, in
something (the wifi key perhaps?) controlled by wistron_btns. Booting
3.2.0-14-pae puts the controller(?) in a "broken" state from which
3.2.0-15-pae can't recover, but a non-pae kernel can. And though
3.2.0-15-pae can't recover a "broken" controller, it also cannot put it
into that "broken" state (which is a good turn of development).

So now, about that "fails" part.

I discovered by accident that although the system appears to freeze in
boots I referred to as "fails", it has in fact been brought down to
*almost* complete halt, but *just* almost. If I'm patient enough to
wait, it does actually boot into LDM, from where I can switch to another
VT and log in... slooowly.

Thus I was able to find out what's going on that makes it so slow:

jani@amilo:~$ head dmesg.fail
stron_btns: Unknown key code 10
[ 1011.554522] wistron_btns: Unknown key code 10
[ 1011.554722] wistron_btns: Unknown key code 10
[ 1011.554921] wistron_btns: Unknown key code 10
[ 1011.555120] wistron_btns: Unknown key code 10
[ 1011.555320] wistron_btns: Unknown key code 10
[ 1011.18] wistron_btns: Unknown key code 10
[ 1011.555717] wistron_btns: Unknown key code 10
[ 1011.555916] wistron_btns: Unknown key code 10
[ 1011.556134] wistron_btns: Unknown key code 10
jani@amilo:~$ grep wistron dmesg.fail | wc -l
2520

Note that this is unrelated to pressing any actual physical buttons. It'
wistron_btns misbehaving under the conditions I described above.

[Bug 928448] [NEW] Spelling error in pae image Description: "more then 4GB"

2012-02-07 Thread Jani Uusitalo
Public bug reported:

jani@amilo:~$ LC_ALL=C aptitude show linux-image-3.2.0-14-generic-pae | grep

Public bug reported:

I have two computers affected by this and one that is not, each running
Precise. I've tracked down the cause, but I'm not sure which of the
components involved (friendly-recovery, resolvconf, postfix and upstart)
is the culprit, so I'll file this for friendly-recovery which is at
least severly affected. Feel free to correct the target with better
insight.

Steps to reproduce:
0. Have the 'postfix' and 'resolvconf' packages installed.
1. Boot into recovery mode.

What happens:
The boot proceeds in nonsplash (text) mode, but in the end the recovery menu
fails to show up. Instead the graphical greeter is brought up.

What I expect to happen:
For the recovery menu to show up so I can use it.

The cause:
For debugging this, I first enabled logging for friendly-recovery.conf. That
log implicated resolvconf, so I enabled logging for resolvconf, and that in
turn revealed this:

cp: cannot create regular file `/var/spool/postfix/etc/resolv.conf':
Read-only file system

So I checked, and indeed postfix wasn't there on my laptop which wasn't
affected. It seems that due to the read-only file system, the resolvconf
upstart job fails, which in turn leads to the resolvconf-dependent
friendly-recovery job to also fail.

The workaround:
Uninstall postfix if you can afford to.

[Bug 917668] Re: system freeze ("hard LOCKUP"), warn_slowpath_common+0x7f in sock_aio_read

2012-02-06 Thread Jani Uusitalo
While waiting for this to reoccur, now that I came to think of it: I
have radeon.audio=1 on my kernel parameters due to Bug #864735. Radeon
audio is considered too buggy by developers to be enabled by default, so
my force-enabling it definitely makes it a suspect here.

[Bug 927323] Re: [ATI RS690/780 HDMI] VLC audio becomes distorted without tsched=0

2012-02-06 Thread Jani Uusitalo
Hi David, thanks for responding. I tested fglrx just now and every time
I launched VLC with audio, or in this case even Totem with audio, the X
session went boom right before any sound came out. So if you meant "does
it work without tsched=0 when using fglrx", I guess the answer is no.
I'll attach the X log, although this crash is probably unrelated to this
report. (I only use the free drivers myself so I won't bother to report
this separately. It was pretty consistent and should be easily
reproducible though.)

I didn't know whether the radeon.audio=1 kernel parameter matters when
fglrx is in use, so I tried both with it and without it, with the same
result (X crash).

The only thing audiowise that didn't crash the session was PA's speaker
test (from the audio settings). It didn't make any sound either though.

Luckily, enabling Radeon audio in the kernel hasn't given me any
problems on this setup, at least such that I could link to it. I do have
Bug #917668 filed in, but it'll have to reoccur to get more data to see
if that's connected.

[Bug 927323] [NEW] [ATI RS690/780 HDMI] VLC audio becomes distorted without tsched=0

2012-02-05 Thread Jani Uusitalo
Public bug reported:

Bug #751265 describes the symptom: when VLC uses Pulseaudio for audio
output, the sound from it becomes garbled after playing for a while,
with heavy digital artefacts and echoing. Comment #23 in that report
suggests modifying /etc/pulse/default.pa so that load-module module-
udev-detect is followed by tsched=0. I've done that, and with it VLC
seems to work fine with Pulseaudio. Furthermore, in comment #30 @David
Henningsson prompted us suffering from this and with the tsched=0
workaround working to file our own reports for each specific hardware.
This is my report.

I believe apport adds data about the hardware automatically. I'll add to
that that for me this only occurs with the Radeon HDMI output; through
the analog output (via headphones) the audio works fine. As Bug #864735
describes, Radeon audio is off by default in recent kernels, but I've
re-enabled it by passing the radeon.audio=1 kernel commandline
parameter.

If I switch to ALSA output for VLC (without tsched=0), VLC audio goes
mute after a while. After some time of silence it sort of fast forwards
itself to get up to sync with the video again. This keeps repeating, so
it's not really a workaround.

[Bug 926844] [NEW] netroot doesn't bring up network

2012-02-04 Thread Jani Uusitalo
Public bug reported:

After selecting netroot from the friendly menu, I do get root but no
network: only the loop interface is up. This happens even though the
laptop has in fact both wired and wireless net, both of which do work on
the system after a normal boot.

If I run ifconfig eth0 up and dhclient eth0 on the prompt, the wired
interface comes up fine, so that's a workaround.

Bug #572426 seems to have been repurposed for something that could make
this a duplicate of that. Bug #868748 also describes something similar,
but this isn't just about not getting an IP address; the interfaces
(apart from lo) aren't brough up automatically at all.

[Bug 926012] Re: Freezes during boot when wistron_btns loaded

2012-02-04 Thread Jani Uusitalo
Reopening, there's more to this than I thought.

I thought 3.2.0-14 brought with it a regression, but it turns out it's
now the -pae kernels that freeze during boot as I initially described.
The thing is, I could've sworn I already ruled this out and also that I
did most of yesterday's successful boots with 3.2.0-13-pae, since that
was the topmost and default in the Grub menu. So I'm not yet ruling out
some funky hardware fault, but for now I'll update the title to reflect
how it presently seems: the wistron_btns problem lies with -pae. Non-pae
kernels all the way back to 3.2.0-12 now boot fine.

I'm currently running memtest on the laptop just to be sure, although
I've done it multiple times before with no issues.

3.2.0-13.22 fixed this! Just did three consequtive reboots and a cold

hung during boot. Back to 3.2.0-13 and again no problems. Excellent!

[Bug 926007] Re: Panic, Attempted to kill init. ? printk+0x2d/0x2f

2012-02-03 Thread Jani Uusitalo
Okay, I've tested 3.2.0-13.22 and the results are... annoyingly varied.
Mostly the boots ended in a black, nonresponsive screen. On a couple of
such boots, I was able to ssh in and get some logs. I'll attach them.

On one boot, there was a Trace different from the panic I reported. I'll
attach a picture.

On yet another boot, the same panic was there just as in my shots above,
just after "Starting CUPS" this time. I'll attach a picture of that too
just for completeness' sake.

So the issue is definitely still there, either it just now manifests
itself in slightly more random ways or is clouded by others. I tried -12
again too and that immediately produced the panic, so it's more
consistent in that respect.

On a positive note, fbdev still Just Works.

[Bug 903831] Re: [i855] GPU lockup after 5 minutes playing video using VLC, etc. Works with fbdev.

2012-02-03 Thread Jani Uusitalo
@Bryce, this really is a messy one: I've so far dissected three
overlapping issues (Bug #926007, Bug #926012 and Bug #926028) which have
hindered my attempts to assist in debugging the one I originally laid
down in this report. :)

[Bug 926028] [NEW] Resume normal boot fails to launch X when using fbdev

2012-02-03 Thread Jani Uusitalo
Public bug reported:

Due to Bug #926007, I'm forced to use fbdev on this laptop in order to
use X. In normal use it works okay, but when I boot in recovery mode,
the resume normal boot option fails to launch X. Instead it launches the
low graphics mode dialog, and if I switch to VT-1, the screen becomes
garbled.

Xorg log says the problem is it can't open /dev/fb0: No such file or
directory. I'll attach the log below.

It doesn't matter whether or not I use the other options the recovery
ncurses menu offers; X won't start properly unless I reset and boot
normally (i.e. not in recovery mode).

[Bug 926012] [NEW] Freezes during boot when wistron_btns loaded

2012-02-03 Thread Jani Uusitalo
Public bug reported:

With the recent Precise kernels (at least 3.2.0-[10-12] I think), the
system freezes during boot with the Ubuntu logo and colored dots on
screen (the dots stop progressing), when I have wistron_btns enabled in
/etc/modules. I need wistron_btns on this laptop for the wireless to
work, which is why I'd like to have it enabled.

This is unrelated to Bug #926007 which I also just filed: the
wistron_btns freeze happens even when I'm using fbdev. (With -intel, the
#926007 panic and this freeze take turns in who gets to mess with me.)

>From what I've gathered so far, it seems that wistron_btns works fine if
I manually modprobe it from my desktop, after booting without it. So
that's a workaround at least.

I can kill the freeze with Alt+PrtSc+REISUB. I'll provide any additional
info needed, though I don't know how to produce logs when the system is
frozen.

[Bug 926007] [NEW] Panic, Attempted to kill init. ? printk+0x2d/0x2f

2012-02-03 Thread Jani Uusitalo
Public bug reported:

(Filing this a a separate issue as suggested by Bryce Harrington in
comments of Bug #903831.)

With the -intel driver specified in xorg.conf (or without an xorg.conf
so that -intel is used), booting Precise with the current 3.2.0-12
always results in a kernel panic. I'll attach a couple of shots I took
of two instances (although to me the panic looks the same in both
cases).

This began within the Precise cycle: with the early kernels I was able
to boot fine, although Bug #903831 did come up then.

I have yet to try 3.2.0-13 which has just been released. Once package
listings pick it up I'll give it a go and report back.

I'm able to boot by switching to fbdev in xorg.conf (the way I'm
reporting this now).

[Bug 780469] Re: Does not show list of files for multiarch packages

2012-02-02 Thread Jani Uusitalo
Bug #904853 is related: for a i386 package installed with --force-
architecture on an amd64 system, the Synaptic symptom is the same ("The
list of installed files is only available for installed packages" ). The
info files in /var/lib/dpkg/info don't have a :i386 in the filename, as
(I'm guessing) Synaptic figures for an :i386 package they should.

jani@saegusa:tmp$ ls /var/lib/dpkg/info/lightscribe*
/var/lib/dpkg/info/lightscribe.conffiles /var/lib/dpkg/info/lightscribe.list
/var/lib/dpkg/info/lightscribe.postinst

[Bug 742177] Re: Synaptic doesn't show any "installed Files" in properties window

2012-02-02 Thread Jani Uusitalo
This also concerns libsane 1.0.22-7ubuntu1 here. I don't think this is
Bug #904853, as I've not installed these packages manually, although I
can't vouch if --force-acrchitecture is used automatically by some
upgrades.

[Bug 842968] Re: Inconsistent ordering of "Report Problem..." and "Close" buttons

2012-02-02 Thread Jani Uusitalo
The two dialogs are very, very inconsistent: the dialog icon they use
(DIALOG_QUESTION in one, the DIALOG_ERROR in the other), the dialog
window title ("Application problem" vs. none), the dialog title and
explanation style (brief vs. verbose), the ignore option missing from
one... It's almost as if the engineers behind the two dialogs have
intentionally tried to make them as different from one another as
possible. (No offence intended, I just think it's funny although it is a
genuine accessibility problem as well.) Also, one dialog seems to be
minimizable whereas the other is not — though this doesn't appear in
Blair's screenshot; it may be something introduced in Precise which the
system my screenshot is from is running.

[Bug 924210] [NEW] Unlocking dialog says "Linux@Linux" where it should say $login@$hostname

2012-01-31 Thread Jani Uusitalo
Public bug reported:

I tested this in a VM I upgraded from 10.04 all the way up to 11.10, and
up until Natty the unlocking dialog still used the correct
login@hostname under my full name. In Oneiric, and in Precise which I'm
running on the host, it says Linux@Linux instead.

I'll attach screenshots of the unlocking dialog in 11.04 and 11.10
below.

[Bug 917802] Re: gdebi-gtk crashed with TypeError in __new__(): object of type 'NoneType' has no len()

2012-01-29 Thread Jani Uusitalo
Here's the steps I can currently reproduce this with on my system:

0. Have Gdebi associated with .debs
1. Download
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/89242455/linux-generic_3.2.0.8.8_i386.deb in
Chromium
2. Click the downloaded file in Chromium's downloads bar to open it in Gdebi

This results in Gdebi launching and the crash triggering. If I then
close Gdebi, it triggers the same crash again (apport points me to this
report in both instances).

(I have yet to install the upgrades from this weekend. If any of those
change this, I'll report back.)

2012-01-26 Thread Jani Uusitalo
Public bug reported:

After yesterday's upgrades including libindicator7, unity-greeter
crashes repeatedly until failsafe kicks in, and even then, after
selecting low graphics mode for the session, it crashes. I managed to
get X working again by downgrading unity-greeter back to 0.2.0-0ubuntu4
which I'm filing this report with. The crashing update was version
0.2.0-0ubuntu5.

I'm attaching the crash file.

It seems I'm not able to reproduce this on my other computer (also
running up-to-date Precise), so I'll look for differences in the setups.

[Bug 921154] [NEW] Ignores --color=always in GREP_OPTIONS

2012-01-24 Thread Jani Uusitalo
Public bug reported:

(Doing this in reverse order, as I think the steps are best represented
by what I actually type in.)

Premise:
I'm a newbie who tries to do the nasty and make grep output always colored
using GREP_OPTIONS. I have a file called test, with numbers 1-9 each on its own
line.

What I expect to happen:
For all the numbers I grep from my file except 2 to be colored.

What actually happens:
Neither when preceding the grep with GREP_OPTIONS when I grep 4, nor when
GREP_OPTIONS is exported prior to grepping 5, is the resulting output colored.

What does work:
Passing --color=always as a genuine grep parameter. Passing (for example) -V in
GREP_OPTIONS either on the same line or exported.

Additional notes:
This crippling might be some kind of a safety measure to prevent all the
breakage that doing what I'm attempting to do risks inflicting on the system.
But I've not been able to find any documentation about such a design decision
having been made, and in contrast, the man page to my understanding implies
that this should, in fact, work.

Steps to reproduce:

jani@saegusa:~$ printenv | grep -i grep
jani@saegusa:~$ grep 1 test # colored
1
jani@saegusa:~$ grep 2 test | cat # not colored
2
jani@saegusa:~$ grep --color=always 3 test | cat # colored
3
jani@saegusa:~$ GREP_OPTIONS='--color=always' grep 4 test | cat # NOT colored!
4
jani@saegusa:~$ export GREP_OPTIONS='--color=always'
jani@saegusa:~$ grep 5 test | cat # NOT colored!
5
jani@saegusa:~$ export GREP_OPTIONS='-V'
jani@saegusa:~$ grep 6 test | cat # control

[Bug 903831] Re: [i855] GPU lockup after 5 minutes playing video using VLC, etc. Works with fbdev.

2012-01-21 Thread Jani Uusitalo
Robert, I tested your kernel. Unfortunately there's little to report:
here it still panics when bringing up X with -intel. Should I perhaps
file a different bug about these?

I'll attach a picture of the output. Looks like the freezing with just
the mouse cursor occurs about 1/3 of boots, in 2/3 it manages to switch
back to the logging terminal with the panic.

[Bug 918077] [NEW] 'Repeat Mode' loops MP4, MP3 files only twice, then stops

2012-01-18 Thread Jani Uusitalo
Public bug reported:

See Bug #907644 for a similar issue with MKV files.

With MP4 and MP3 files, with just one such file on the playlist and
looped (with repeat mode on), the file is played through twice with no
problem, then it just stops at the end. Restarting the video by double-
clicking on the playlist item works.

As in #907644, if you add another file (or another instance of the same
file) to the playlist and let it loop between the two, there's no
problem. But with the single file repeating the bug is 100%
reproducible. Not reproducible with VLC.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Load an MP3 or MP4 in Totem.
2. Set 'Repeat Mode' on.
3. Let the file play through two rounds.

What happens:
At the end of second play, the playing stops and does not start again by itself.

What I expect to happen:
For the file to repeat ad infinitum.

[Bug 907644] Re: Audio stops working on repeated play of MKV file

2012-01-18 Thread Jani Uusitalo
Actually, with the MP3 it's Bug #918077 (which I just reported). Could
be the same underlying issue, but I felt it best to report these
separately as the symptom differs slightly.

[Bug 917668] [NEW] Xorg freeze ("hard LOCKUP"), warn_slowpath_common+0x7f

2012-01-17 Thread Jani Uusitalo
Public bug reported:

I've had sporadic freezes on this system before since upgrading to
Precise, but I haven't had the resources to try and ssh in prior to
this, so I can't tell if this has occurred before. Now that I have an
additional laptop I can hopefully catch this again if it occurs.

I screwed up with the logs first, but then managed to salvage dmesg with
a Trace from terminal buffer. I'll attach it separately below.

I wasn't active on the desktop when the freeze happened (had my hands on
the laptop). At least Chromium, Transmission and Google Music were
running at the time.

(I'm not familiar with Traces so I'll just pick something from the first
line as title. Feel free to change it if needed.)

[Bug 916890] Re: "Waiting for network configuration" on every boot

2012-01-17 Thread Jani Uusitalo
You're right: it's announce-ip and another local script from
/etc/network/if-up.d/ (I'm attaching it here) that both seem to trigger
this if either is present. This other one's sort of like the opposite of
my announce-ip, there to update /etc/hosts with data from hosts
elsewhere on the net my server knows about (that announce themselves
with announce-ip). This combination used to work back with ifupdown
alpha but now with beta causes the wait.

To clarify: with both scripts removed from if-up.d the 60+ second wait
doesn't appear during boot, but with either script in place the wait is
there.

To be sure, I installed the latest ifupdown that's just appeared in the
repos (0.7~beta2ubuntu2) also, and there's no change compared to
0.7~beta2ubuntu1 (wait is there when the scripts are there).

The question now becomes whether I've initially designed the scripts
wrong with regards to how things in if-up.d should work, and it just
happened to work with the alpha, or did something in ifupdown's handling
of if-up.d change between alpha and beta so that things that should work
no longer do.

With my knowledge of things I'd bet on the former, but you can probably
enlighten me on this. My assumption's been that the scripts in if-up.d
are run after network interfaces have been brought up.

2012-01-16 Thread Jani Uusitalo
Sure. This script sources another local file for configuration, but
that one's just a one-line variable declaration for the $URL. (I'm
omitting that one because it has my password for the script's server
side.)

[Bug 917172] [NEW] Always picks subdirectory of previous directory if one exists

2012-01-16 Thread Jani Uusitalo
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
1. Take a screenshot, save it to Pictures. (Works.)
2. Create a subdirectory under Pictures, say Pictures/Test
3. Take a screenshot, save it to Pictures/Test (Works.)
4. Take a screenshot, try to save it directly under Pictures.

What happens:
The directory chooser always picks the 'Test' subdirectory.

What I expect to happen:
To be able to choose 'Pictures' as the directory to save my screenshot in.

Workaround:
In the directory chooser, click the pen icon to edit the path. Navigate to
parent directory of 'Pictures'. Click to edit the path, make sure you delete
the trailing slash (and anything thereafter) from after 'Pictures', hit enter.

Additional notes:
Maybe this is a general bug of the directory chooser, but without looking, I
haven't come across other apps that make use of it to verify it's not just
Gnome Screenshot that's affected.

[Bug 916890] Re: "Waiting for network configuration" on every boot

2012-01-15 Thread Jani Uusitalo
Thanks for taking a look Stéphane. Here's /var/log/syslog, the rest will
follow below. And do ask if you need more, it's no problem for me to
reboot or otherwise test things on this laptop, as I also have my main
desktop to work with.
