[Bug 1767089] Re: totem cannot play h.264 on 18.04

2018-04-30 Thread Jay S.
Yes, Nvidida indeed. 750 GTX in one system, 970 GTX in the other one.

Oddly enough, the videos now play for me as well ...

I guess that would confirm your suspicions about the video hardware. My
apt history shows that libnvidia-390 was updated only three days ago. I
would not be surprised if it contained the fix that was needed.

I think we can call this one solved.

Thanks for the assistance!

[Bug 1767614] [NEW] 18.04 system with nvidia-driver-390 freezes when returning from console

2018-04-28 Thread Jay S.
Public bug reported:

Expected behaviour on exiting any console session:
1) the system keeps displaying the console until I manually select a different
tty (ALT + F key)
2) I can log in on that tty (text or GUI) without any problem

Actual (and consistent) behaviour with nvidia-390 installed:
1) as soon as I enter "exit" on any console, I get kicked out and directed to
GDM
2) GDM is completely frozen: the mouse pointer is stuck and most keyboard keys
are dead
3) I can enter ALT + Print Screen, but that only makes the screen turn black
4) I need to push the reset button

One more detail: the bug is effectively triggered by the act of exiting
- as long as all console sessions are kept open, the system behaves as
expected.

I estimate that this problem is caused by the nvidia driver because:
a) I am seeing the same problem on a second computer that has different
hardware but that is also using nvidia 390
b) the problem disappears as soon as I switch back to nouveau

Unfortunately, dmesg, Xorg.0.log and kern.log do not appear to offer any
pointers that might shed more light on this bug.

[Bug 1767089] Re: totem cannot play h.264 on 18.04

2018-04-26 Thread Jay S.
It appears to affect several h.264 encoded videos I have. I have
recently purchased a number of course videos consisting each of
individual clips - and none of those will play. They do play in VLC and
SMPlayer so I assume the clips are fine.

As for precedents, I cannot think of any. It is true I have had the
occasional h.264 video failing to render as a thumbnail (I believe that
started around 16.04) - but those were exceptions and it did did not
prevent those videos from playing. Now I get neither thumbnails nor
playback so it is worse. And it affects many more videos, too.

As requested, I have added a clip that is affected by the bug.

[Bug 1767089] [NEW] totem cannot play h.264 on 18.04

2018-04-26 Thread Jay S.
Public bug reported:

On a fresh install of 18.04, Totem fails to play recent h.264 video
(audio is fine). Obviously, that means failed thumbnails, too.

I have the whole set of gstreamer plugins installed (version
1.14.0-1ubuntu1), including the libav plugin.

[Bug 1762086] [NEW] libreoffice-writer 6.0.2: no default borderless tables

2018-04-07 Thread Jay S.
Public bug reported:

Testing the 6.0.2-0ubuntu1 release of LibreOffice included with the beta
of Ubuntu 18.04 (daily image of April 7th), I find that LO Writer 6
cannot create borderless tables by default.

Previously, one could get the desired result by simply unchecking the
"border" boxes under the "tables" nodes of Tools > Options > LO Writer
and of Tools > Options > LO Writer/Web.

Unfortunately, that does not seem to work for LO 6. Tables get created
with borders even so. More annoyingly, after I remove them manually,
they pop up again as soon as I make any edits to the table (e.g. insert
or delete a line or make any edits to the numbering).

The PPA versions of LO 6 available for 17.10 appeared to be suffering
from the same problem. But then it was easy to revert to the officially
supported LO 5.

As 18.04 is to be an LTS release and LO 6 looks like the official
version, I do hope to see the table bug solved sooner than later.

[Bug 1725948] [NEW] system hangs during boot when using a USB Keyboard

2017-10-22 Thread Jay S.
Public bug reported:

My USB Keyboard consistently turns off as soon as the boot process gets
past the GRUB menu. The system then hangs - indefinitely, unless I plug
the keyboard in again.

This behaviour was present in Beta 2 and manifests itself in the
official release - freshly installed - both in default and recovery
mode.

Dmesg reports:
watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 22s! [swapper/0:0]
watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#3 stuck for 22s! [swapper/3:0]
(Obviously, the number of seconds depends on the time it takes me to plug the
keyboard in again).

And well before those lines comes:
pci :00:12.1: OHCI: BIOS handoff failed (BIOS bug?) 0184

When I watch the boot messages roll off the screen, I see the system indeed get
halted on a message about OHCI:
ohci-pci :00:12.1: irq 16, io mem 0xfe02d000

I doubt this is actually a BIOS bug because I have been using this same
board without a glitch for six or seven years now.

[Bug 729979] Re: [nvidia] Windows appear blank white

One place in which this is consistently reproduced for me is in the

Usually my remedy is to maximize then restore it, and the contents
appear.

[Bug 966698] Re: Freeze on logout with NVIDIA logo displayed

2012-03-31 Thread Jay S
apport information

** Tags added: compiz-0.9 ubuntu

** Description changed:

Sometimes when I log out these days, the screen goes blank, then a big
NVIDIA logo comes up on the screen, and the system freezes. I can't
Ctrl+Alt+F1 into a terminal, and no other input seems to do anything. I
have to hard-reboot the computer at this point to get back to the
  desktop.

Using Oneiric 32-bit with the NVIDIA 280.13-0ubuntu6 driver.

I'm really not confident that I'm filing this against the correct package.

[Bug 966698] [NEW] Freeze on logout with NVIDIA logo displayed

2012-03-27 Thread Jay S
Public bug reported:

Sometimes when I log out these days, the screen goes blank, then a big
NVIDIA logo comes up on the screen, and the system freezes. I can't
Ctrl+Alt+F1 into a terminal, and no other input seems to do anything. I
have to hard-reboot the computer at this point to get back to the
desktop.

Using Oneiric 32-bit with the NVIDIA 280.13-0ubuntu6 driver.

I'm really not confident that I'm filing this against the correct package.

[Bug 954496] Re: miro segfaults every couple minutes

2012-03-24 Thread Jay S
I've noticed this for a long, long time, and it's made Miro unusable. At
first I couldn't pinpoint the cause -- crashes seemed to happen no
matter what you were doing with Miro at the time -- but after removing
all my podcast subscriptions, it didn't crash for at least half an hour.
I added a couple audio podcasts from the Miro Guide, changed the podcast
"Check for new content" setting to "Manually," and it remained stable
for a while, even as I played a video I had manually downloaded with a
.torrent file. Then it crashed again, with the same terminal output.

I plan to leave Miro running with *no* subscriptions for a while to see
if that prevents it from crashing.

I've also filed an upstream bug:

[Bug 961689] [NEW] When dragging bookmark from address bar to bookmarks bar, nested menus close too easily

2012-03-21 Thread Jay S
Public bug reported:

This is a bit difficult to explain, so here goes:

1) Make sure you have a folder in your bookmarks bar, and that that
folder has at least one subfolder, and that that subfolder has half a
dozen or so items in it.

2) Drag the favicon from the address bar over the folder in the
bookmarks bar, and that folder's menu will open.

3) Continue to drag the favicon over the newly visible subfolder's name,
and that subfolder's menu will open.

4) Attempt to drag the favicon into the subfolder's menu by dragging
diagonally down and to the right. As soon as the cursor goes beneath the
bottom of the subfolder's title, the subfolder menu closers.

5) Compare this with choosing an existing bookmark from that subfolder;
moving the cursor diagonally down and to the right, even if it goes
beneath the bottom of the subfolder's title, doesn't cause the
subfolder's menu to close.

[Bug 948041] [NEW] When drop-down button is clicked, then loses focus, button text turns white

2012-03-06 Thread Jay S
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce (Ambiance theme):

1) Click the down-arrow on the "Write" button in the Thunderbird toolbar. (Or
the "Tag" Button)
2) Move the mouse cursor out of the area of the button.
3) The "Write" text on the button turns white, as though it thinks the button
has the inactive dark gray background.

Expected behavior:

The "Write" text should remain dark gray so as to be legible against the
light button background color.

[Bug 883800] Re: apps available to download section should blacklist certain items

2012-02-24 Thread Jay S
I like Alex's approach in his second paragraph in comment #5. In short:

1) Developers offer to mark their applications as containing "adult content" at
their own discretion.
2) Software Center has a toggle option to hide/show applications containing
"adult content."

This approach addresses several concerns:

a) The Dash and Software Center can show fewer "adult" applications if desired.
b) Nobody has to moderate (what would inevitably be very, very contentious)
blacklists/whitelists in order to keep (a) true.
c) Nobody's "freedoms" are infringed upon; users still have the freedom to show
and install these applications; developers still have the freedom to have their
applications appear in Software Center, with the entirely voluntary option to
accommodate those (many) who would rather not see these types of applications
by default.

Should these apps be shown or hidden by default? Should the toggle be
such that "unchecked" means hide them or "checked" means hide them? My
opinion is that the checkbox label should read "Show applications
containing adult content," and should be unchecked by default. If
developers are taking the extra step to mark their applications as
"adult," there seems no harm in hiding them by default. Then again,
maybe hiding them by default would discourage developers from using the
option.

Maybe the option in Software Center could even be discoverable by
looking for specific search keywords, like "porn": "It appears that your
are searching for applications with adult content, which are currently
hidden. Would you like to show these applications?" This would be
trickier -- off the top of my head, someone might be looking for a
parental control / porn-blocking app by using search terms such as
these.

[Bug 298902] Re: Closing lid after telling computer to shut down results in hibernate

This still happens to me sometimes in Ubuntu 11.04 on a Dell Vostro V13.

I have my laptop lid close event set to Suspend, and when I manually
choose to Hibernate and quickly shut the lid, sometimes it only goes
into Suspend. I only find this out later, usually after the battery has
died.

Sorry I don't have more details, it doesn't happen every time.

[Bug 930201] [NEW] Messages sometimes aren't present in message window when opened from indicator

2012-02-10 Thread Jay S
Public bug reported:

Sometimes, I will receive a new message in Empathy from a contact who
does not already have a message window open. The messaging menu
indicator turns blue, I click on it, I see the contact's name beneath
the Empathy menu, and when I click on that, a new tab for that contact
opens in the existing message window, but the messages that they sent
are not there, even though I saw them go by in the notification area and
the messages are logged in Gmail.

I'm sorry I don't have more information about this at the moment, but
this is something I've noticed happening off and on recently. This may
be a duplicate but finding the right words to search for is proving
difficult.

Oneiric 32-bit with all updates. I will try to see if I can reproduce
and take better note of the circumstances surrounding this.

[Bug 914028] [NEW] Poor wording in alert when trying to install from unauthenticated sources

2012-01-09 Thread Jay S
Public bug reported:

When trying to install untrusted packages, the alert message reads:

==
Requires installation of untrusted packages

The action would require the installation of packages from not authenticated
sources.
==

The second sentence should definitely be something more like:

> This action would require the installation of packages from sources
that have not been authenticated

or at least

> This action would require the installation of packages from
unauthenticated sources.

(Note the changing of "The action" to "This action.")

The first sentence ("Requires installation of untrusted packages") is a
sentence fragment and is somewhat redundant. I'm not sure what the GNOME
HIG has to say about this, but it strikes me as clunky.

Also, the "Details" box that drops down isn't really self-explanatory.
Is it possible to change the word "Details" there? Maybe to "Untrusted
packages" or something?

I think it would make more sense overall for the first, large sentence
to explain broadly what is going on, such as:

> One or more packages cannot be installed

The next message should elaborate:

> One or more packages marked for installation come from sources that
have not been authenticated. Installation cannot continue.

Then the label on the drop-down arrow could read:

> Untrusted packages

[Bug 912557] [NEW] Spacing between checkboxes in "Ubuntu Software" tab increases when window height is increased

2012-01-05 Thread Jay S
Public bug reported:

The vertical spacing between checkboxes in the "Ubuntu Software" tab of
Software Sources increases in height along with the window. The spacing
of other widgets is increased proportionally. No change in spacing
should occur, except between the "Download from:" drop-down menu and the
"Installable from CD-ROM/DVD" text box; alternatively, the text box
could grow larger vertically while all other vertical spacing remains
unchanged.

See the "Updates" tab for an example of how this should behave.

[Bug 907953] [NEW] "[name] would like permission to see when you're online" message offers no action to take

2011-12-22 Thread Jay S
Public bug reported:

As described in this question:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/empathy/+question/176041

I got a notification that "[name] would like permission to see when

request, or possibly no way at all. The messaging icon didn't turn blue,
and I don't see anything in Empathy's menus.

[Bug 636814] Re: Library watcher doesnot add new files automatically

2011-11-28 Thread Jay S
Ah, I now see what the problem is. When the mp3s are first being
created, they have the extension ".part", then are renamed to have the
extension ".mp3". Banshee first sees the ".part" extension, believes the
file is in some format that it can't render, and doesn't change its mind
when the file's extension is changed (even though it does see that
change).

[Bug 896986] [NEW] "Copy file's location" menu item in file chooser dialog uses tick mark instead of apostrophe

2011-11-27 Thread Jay S

Title should be self-explanatory. When in a file chooser dialog, right-
clicking on a file displays a menu containing a command called "Copy

I'm also encountering this problem. I'm not sure what else I can say;
the extension is enabled, and I am putting files into the main music

How does "library watching" work, anyway? Is it meant to be realtime, or
does it check the directory for changes every X minutes?

[Bug 885824] [NEW] Modify/minimize default LibreOffice toolbar buttons for Ubuntu

2011-11-03 Thread Jay S
Public bug reported:

The sheer number (and, in some cases, indecipherability) of the default
toolbar buttons on most LibreOffice applications is very intimidating
and confusing, especially for new users. I'd like to suggest that the
LibreOffice packaging team come up with more streamlined default
toolbars for the LibreOffice suite.

As an example, I'm attaching the customized toolbars I'm using for
Writer.

[Bug 840875] Re: Empathy sends a notification "Password required" without any supplementary info

2011-11-02 Thread Jay S
Something that might be related to this is that sometimes when I shut
down or log out, a window appears asking me to unlock my keyring. I
thought my default keyring was unlocked when I logged in, but maybe it
isn't anymore? And maybe this is why Empathy complains? Though I
wouldn't then understand why I can connect anyway.

I couldn't connect to my Gmail jabber account at all under GNOME Shell,
and when I logged out of that session and the keyring prompt appeared, I
was able to enter my password and watch Empathy connect successfully
before the system had logged me out.

[Bug 883677] Re: Changing the default alert sound breaks desktop sound theme

2011-10-31 Thread Jay S
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected oneiric running-unity

** Description changed:

  Steps to reproduce:

  1) Open a terminal, dconf-editor, and the Sound Configuration window.
  2) Navigate to org.gnome.desktop.sound in dconf-editor. The value for the key
named "theme-name" should be "ubuntu"
  3) In the terminal, run the command:
   /usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play --id="dialog-question"
You will hear the expected "drum beat" question sound.
  4) Click on "Bark" in the Sound Configuration window to change the alert
sound.
   a) You will notice that the theme-name in dconf-editor has changed to
"_custom"
  5) In the terminal, run this command again:
   /usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play --id="dialog-question"
You will hear no sound and see the message "Failed to play sound: File
or data not found"
  6) Change the alert sound back to "Default" in the Sound Configuration window.
   a) You will notice that the theme-name in dconf-editor has changed to
"freedesktop"
  7) In the terminal, run this command again:
   /usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play --id="dialog-question"
You will hear no sound and see the message "Failed to play sound: File
or data not found"

In order to get Ubuntu's sound theme back, you have to manually change
the value of theme-name in dconf to "ubuntu".

  Expected behavior:

  1) When changing alert sound back to "Default," the value of "theme-name" in
dconf should revert to "ubuntu", not "freedesktop".
  2) When choosing an alert sound other than "Default", users will not
reasonably expect that many of their other system sounds will disappear. Only
the alert sound itself should change.

- More ideally, the selection should be among entire sound *themes*, like
- the moblin theme which is available in the repos.

[Bug 874671] Re: Empathy doesn't remember favorites, chat logs when ~/.local is a symlink

2011-10-30 Thread Jay S
** Description changed:

After upgrading to Oneiric, all of my Empathy favorites have been
forgotten. Setting them again doesn't survive a logout/login cycle.

I now think this may be due to the fact that I keep my /home/jay/.local
- directory as a symlink to /var/jay/.local on my SSD. This didn't used to
- be a problem in Natty, so I don't know what changed.

[Bug 874671] Re: Empathy doesn't remember favorites, chat logs when ~/.local is a symlink

2011-10-29 Thread Jay S
Ok, here's what I did.

I adapted the instructions from this comment:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/telepathy-mission-
control-5/+bug/816554/comments/4

adding "owner /var/jay/.local/share/telepathy*/ rw," and the like to
my /etc/apparmor.d/usr.lib.telepathy file, then running:

sudo apparmor_parser -r /etc/apparmor.d/usr.lib.telepathy

Empathy is now successfully saving logs, even though
@{HOME}/.local/share/telepathy*/ is a symlink to
/var/jay/.local/share/telepathy*/

Is it the symlinking that is causing this problem? I assume that it is.
Why does apparmor balk at this symlink?

[Bug 883691] Re: Warning Dialog sound does not play in gedit

2011-10-29 Thread Jay S
** Summary changed:

- (Most) Oneiric system sounds do not play
+ Warning Dialog sound does not play in gedit

** Package changed: gnome-session (Ubuntu) => gedit (Ubuntu)

** Description changed:

- I hope I'm filing this against the correct package.
+ Steps to reproduce:

- In Oneiric, very few system sounds play. I hear button-clicking sounds
- if I have those on, and there is a small "beep" when Thunderbird gets a
- new mail, and IM sounds from Empathy work. But more general, system-wide
- sounds aren't playing at all.
+ 1) Open gedit
+ 2) Type some text into a new file
+ 3) Attempt to close the file
+ 4) A warning dialog pops up but doesn't play any warning sound

- For instance, if I open gedit, type in some words, then try to close it,
- the warning dialog that pops up asking me to save isn't accompanied by
- the drum sound I expect.
+ Expected behavior:

- In dconf-editor, under org.gnome.desktop.sound, I do have the "theme-
- name" value set to "ubuntu", and I can play these sounds with canberra
- commands such as:
-
- /usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play --id="dialog-warning"
-
- But in practice there are few (if any) of these system sounds.
+ 4) The warning dialog pops up, accompanied by a warning sound

[Bug 883691] [NEW] (Most) Oneiric system sounds do not play

2011-10-29 Thread Jay S
Public bug reported:

I hope I'm filing this against the correct package.

In Oneiric, very few system sounds play. I hear button-clicking sounds
if I have those on, and there is a small "beep" when Thunderbird gets a
new mail, and IM sounds from Empathy work. But more general, system-wide
sounds aren't playing at all.

For instance, if I open gedit, type in some words, then try to close it,
the warning dialog that pops up asking me to save isn't accompanied by
the drum sound I expect.

In dconf-editor, under org.gnome.desktop.sound, I do have the "theme-
name" value set to "ubuntu", and I can play these sounds with canberra
commands such as:

/usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play --id="dialog-warning"

But in practice there are few (if any) of these system sounds.

** Affects: gnome-session (Ubuntu)

[Bug 883677] [NEW] Changing the default alert sound breaks desktop sound theme

2011-10-29 Thread Jay S
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1) Open a terminal, dconf-editor, and the Sound Configuration window.
2) Navigate to org.gnome.desktop.sound in dconf-editor. The value for the key
named "theme-name" should be "ubuntu"
3) In the terminal, run the command:
 /usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play --id="dialog-question"
You will hear the expected "drum beat" question sound.
4) Click on "Bark" in the Sound Configuration window to change the alert sound.
 a) You will notice that the theme-name in dconf-editor has changed to
"_custom"
5) In the terminal, run this command again:
 /usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play --id="dialog-question"
You will hear no sound and see the message "Failed to play sound: File or
data not found"
6) Change the alert sound back to "Default" in the Sound Configuration window.
 a) You will notice that the theme-name in dconf-editor has changed to
"freedesktop"
7) In the terminal, run this command again:
 /usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play --id="dialog-question"
You will hear no sound and see the message "Failed to play sound: File or
data not found"

In order to get Ubuntu's sound theme back, you have to manually change
the value of theme-name in dconf to "ubuntu".

Expected behavior:

1) When changing alert sound back to "Default," the value of "theme-name" in
dconf should revert to "ubuntu", not "freedesktop".
2) When choosing an alert sound other than "Default", users will not reasonably
expect that many of their other system sounds will disappear. Only the alert
sound itself should change.

More ideally, the selection should be among entire sound *themes*, like
the moblin theme which is available in the repos.

** Affects: gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
