[Bug 1932485] Re: [MIR] libportal

2021-09-21 Thread Jeremy Bicha
The API stability question was answered sufficiently for the Debian
maintainer to release his package to Debian unstable/testing.

The discussion was at https://github.com/flatpak/libportal/issues/33

[Bug 1927149] Re: Irrelevant translatable strings

2021-09-19 Thread Jeremy Bicha
The package move suggestion wasn't about this bug. If the file ought to
be in the -dev package and we think it's important enough, we can do the
move.

We once discussed this idea for policykit's .its file, which is included
in policykit-1 instead of the -dev package.

[Bug 1822156] Re: Cannot parse m3u8 playlist

Sorry for the very late response.

I verified your sample file works with totem-pl-parser 3.26.5-5ubuntu1
on Ubuntu 21.10 (development). That version of totem-pl-parser is also
available in Ubuntu 20.04 LTS so it probably works there too.

[Bug 1927149] Re: Irrelevant translatable strings

2021-09-19 Thread Jeremy Bicha
We have done big transitions before. If we wanted to move the file, I
think it could go like this:

Step 1: Have libappstream-glib-dev depend on appstream
Step 2: File bugs against all the rdepends to change their Build-Depends
Step 3: After all the rdepends are fixed, move the file and drop the dependency
we added in step 1

[Bug 1943367] [NEW] Please remove rust-rustls from impish

2021-09-12 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

rust-rustls is preventing several rust related packages from migrating
out of -proposed.

https://people.canonical.com/~ubuntu-archive/proposed-
migration/update_excuses.html#rust-base64

"rust-base64 (0.12.1-1 to 0.13.0-1)

Migration status for rust-base64 (0.12.1-1 to 0.13.0-1): BLOCKED:
Rejected/violates migration policy/introduces a regression
Issues preventing migration:
migrating librust-base64-dev/0.13.0-1/amd64 to testing makes
librust-rustls-dev/0.18.0-1/amd64 uninstallable"

The rust packages in Debian use a complicated Provides system and none
of my usual ways to look up reverse dependencies handle dependencies on
those provided names. There are about 22 names to look up. You could
probably pipe them all to `apt-cache showpkg ` . Sorry, I haven't done
this.

See https://bugs.debian.org/975191 for a blocker bug to getting rust-
rustls fixed.

[Bug 1943032] Re: FFe: Sync devhelp 41~rc-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2021-09-11 Thread Jeremy Bicha
I updated the bug description with some logs.

The soname was not bumped. There was only minimal change to the library
part of devhelp. devhelp only has 2 reverse dependencies in Ubuntu:
gnome-builder and anjuta.

As far as I can tell, there are no changes breaking backwards
compatibility: only a new feature. Devhelp's own API docs were rewritten
using the new doc system. And the devhelp app had some UI changes.

I have run the new app and things worked ok. (Except for bug 1942951 but
that's unrelated to this update.)

[Bug 1942951] [NEW] devhelp doesn't display any help pages

2021-09-07 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

webkit2gtk 2.33.3-1ubuntu3

Test Case
-
1. sudo apt install devhelp libgtk-3-doc
2. Open devhelp and click the GTK+ 3 Reference Manual link in the left sidebar.
3. The manual should show in the main view area.

What Happens

The main viewing area stays blank.

Other Info
--
I manually installed webkit2gtk from Ubuntu 21.04 and Devhelp worked normally
again.
The Epiphany web browser works fine with the broken webkit2gtk version.
Ubuntu's packaging diverges slightly from Debian's. The changelog mentions some
dependency changes and disabling lto.
I haven't done any further investigation.

[Bug 1942150] [NEW] [impish] gtk4 build test failures on ppc64el

2021-08-30 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

gtk4 currently fails to build on ppc64el because the validate build test is
failing from
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/-/tree/master/testsuite/tools

In my PPA, 4.3.2 builds ok, but 4.4.0+ds1-2 and 4.4.0+ds1-3 fail at the
same spot.

The test passes on Debian's ppc64el builder.

I believe ppc64el is an unusual architecture in Ubuntu because it uses
-O3.

There are only 191 commits between 4.3.2 and 4.4.0.

The 4.3 releases were development snapshots on the way to a stable 4.4
release series.

[Bug 1929477] Re: Won't build gtk4 debs on arm64

2021-08-30 Thread Jeremy Bicha
I don't believe this is something we are going to do since gtk4 builds
fine on arm64 on the official Debian and Ubuntu builders.

You can easily extend the timeout. Look for "arm" in debian/rules and
add "arm64". If that still doesn't work, you can tweak the
test_timeout_multiplier on the next line.

[Bug 1941965] Re: Sync gnome-desktop3 40.4-1 (main) from Debian experimental (main)

2021-08-30 Thread Jeremy Bicha
> How does that work, to generate a locale…

Sorry for being unclear. The locale was needed for a build test only. I
believe it was testing LTR and RTL support for the time format (as used
in the middle of the top bar in GNOME).

The feature used by Unity is a subtle tweak. If we dropped the patches,
Unity would still get the average color used by the desktop wallpaper
(since gnome-desktop upstream still includes that function). It just
wouldn't be weighted to the average color of the left side of the
desktop wallpaper.

Arguably, that tweak could be used in the modern Ubuntu desktop. It just
isn't currently and I don't know if it's worth the work to get the tweak
working in GNOME.

> how about including those in Debian?

Sometimes, some Debian GNOME members object to Unity/Ubuntu-specific
patches being pushed into Debian. Sometimes, we push the patches anyway
(because overall, it helps Debian if Ubuntu developers will upload new
versions of packages faster).

Off-topic, but there used to be a cool feature that enabled us to easily
selectively apply patches on Ubuntu only. Even though I only used it in
a few packages, it upset people enough that they got the practice banned
in Debian Policy. 

[Bug 1941965] [NEW] Sync gnome-desktop3 40.4-1 (main) from Debian experimental (main)

2021-08-28 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

Please sync gnome-desktop3 40.2-2 (main) from Debian experimental (main)

Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:
  * Merge with debian, remaining changes:
- Add 04_compute_average_color.patch: Compute the avergage color in
gnome-desktop itself, not in unity to fix some races (LP #963140)
- Add tweak_color_computation.patch, Patch from Gord, no patch header,
  no bug link.
- debian/control.in: Build-Depend on language-pack-gnome-he for build tests
- debian/rules:
+ Specify gettext domain for dh_translations.

- The language-pack dependency is not needed since the build tests work
fine without it. The build generates the locales it needs.

- I added the translation domain to Debian since we've added similar
overrides in Debian in libgweather and glib2.0

- That leaves 2 patches. Both of the patches take an existing function
to determine the "average" color of the desktop wallpaper and tweak it
so that it looks at the left side of the wallpaper since that's where
the Ubuntu Dock is. The patches are old. As far as I can tell, that
function isn't actually used by anything in Ubuntu excluding the
remnants of Unity. I checked gnome-shell, mutter, and both our default
extensions. I checked codesearch.debian.net. The patches are an
interesting idea but it's only helpful where a desktop wallpaper is
asymmetrical with different colors on the left side.

My opinion is that it's not worth maintaining a Debian diff for an
unimportant Unity tweak.

(One side note, the gnome-desktop patched code was copied into unity-
greeter and its 2 forks, arctica-greeter and slick-greeter. But it's a
code copy so it doesn't matter what we do in gnome-desktop.)

Changelog entries since current impish version 40.2-1ubuntu1:

[Bug 1917514] Re: Add support for AVIF images

2021-07-18 Thread Jeremy Bicha
gimp 2.10.22 supports AVIF. It is available in Ubuntu 21.04.

Ubuntu 21.04 is not a long term support release, so you'll need to
upgrade to 21.10 later this year and then to 22.04 LTS next year to get
back to a Long Term Support release.

Or you can try installing the snap release of gimp.

[Bug 1936718] Re: screen doesn't automatically lock when switching to a virtual workspace

2021-07-18 Thread Jeremy Bicha
It is intentional that the screen lock is inhibited (temporarily
disabled) when watching a video. That may happen if you're listening to
music too, and is probably intentional.

It sounds like you are requesting that your screen automatically lock
when you switch to a virtual terminal.

As a workaround, I suggest you lock your screen yourself when you want
it locked. There is a keyboard shortcut: Windows Key + L

** Summary changed:

- login screen can be bypass
+ screen doesn't automatically lock when switching to a virtual workspace

[Bug 1926047] Re: [SRU 缾] Update to 20201225 (to support missing emojis from unicode 13.0)

2021-04-25 Thread Jeremy Bicha

  [ Impact ]

Many new emoji supported by various social platforms are not currently

  ICU supports this version).

Emoji using a different composition not supported by 20.04 may show as
multiple icons instead than as a single emoji.

No emoji are shown when they used to be visible.

This is easily comparable using https://unicode.org/emoji/charts/full-
emoji-list.html where "Google" should match "Browser".

python3-nototools has no rdepends and the only one Build-Depend is
fonts-noto-color-emoji itself, so updating it has no effect either. Even
though in this case is not needed.

The design of some icons has been updated (compare browser with google
columns at https://i.imgur.com/HkA3kOz.jpg), overall the look is
consistent though and given that these are not part of any documentation
or relevant component it's not something that needs an UFe.

  --

Note: Building the package with focal version of nototools is fine
because fonts-noto-color-emoji depends on newer version only for tests
and metadata checks which is not needed by our builds.

This can be easily checked by diffing the resulting ttf extracting the
data with ttx, which is in fact matching (for what it concerns real

[Bug 1870794] Re: Update for Unicode 13

2020-10-06 Thread Jeremy Bicha
The workflow does have a bit of an awkward consequence.

It means that bugs that affect a stable release but are fixed in a newer
release (or development series) are marked as Fix Released, unless
someone volunteers to fix the bug quickly.

I believe it's also harder for users to browse and find bugs like this
that affect them on the supported release they are running.

So I think your workflow works fine during the development cycle but I
don't know if it's ideal for stable releases.

Yes, I know y'all have had this workflow for years. I have been
uncomfortable with it for years too. 

Anyway, I'm not yet volunteering to do this SRU.

The Emoji font was updated for Ubuntu 20.10 which will be released later

Someone might backport this update to Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. To get full support for

[Bug 1873355] Re: edubuntu-meta package missed in upcoming Ubuntu 20.04 LTS release

2020-04-16 Thread Jeremy Bicha
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1774473 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1774473

Edubuntu was discontinued 5 years ago. This change was intentional.

By the way, if you visit https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/edubuntu-
meta and click "View full publishing history" in the top right corner,
you can see why a package was deleted.

In this case, the reason is
"discontinued flavor; LP: #1774473"

so I marked your bug as a duplicate of that bug.

[Bug 1872598] [NEW] Please remove ipython-py2 from Ubuntu

2020-04-13 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

ipython-py2 was removed from Debian.

The package carries a Ubuntu diff to adapt to the python2 binary rename
but that isn't needed if we remove the package.

ipython-py2 is keeping 3 source packages from migrating to focal since
those updates drop python2 packages used by ipython.

Please remove ipython-py2 from Ubuntu, once bug 1872596 is fixed.

[Bug 1872596] [NEW] matplotlib should not Build-Depend on ipython

2020-04-13 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

matplotlib is the last package that has a dependency on ipython
(currently provided by source: ipython-py2). Once ipython-py2 is
removed, there are 3 packages stuck in the output report that will be
able to migrate to focal.

This dependency was fixed in Debian, so I'm backporting the dependency
update and filing this bug for the benefit of the Ubuntu release team
since matplotlib is a seeded package.

2020-04-13 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

ifupdown2 is the last thing in Ubuntu that depends on python-argcomplete.
python-argcomplete is no longer built by Debian's python-argcomplete source

python-argcomplete depends on python-wheel (source: wheel) which is no longer

Please remove pyrit from Ubuntu.

It was already removed from Debian Testing and Unstable.

[Bug 1867775] Re: Sync pagure 5.8.1+dfsg-3 (universe) from Debian sid (main)

2020-03-29 Thread Jeremy Bicha
This bug was fixed in the package pagure - 5.8.1+dfsg-3
Sponsored for Neal Gompa (ngompa13)

---
pagure (5.8.1+dfsg-3) unstable; urgency=medium

  * Correct mistake and make sure we create HOME under /var/lib/pagure.
In my last commit, I forgot to update the postinst files and make sure
that the new HOME is /var/lib/pagure, and not /srv/pagure.
  * Add libjs-highlight.js as a dependency.
This was a thinko; the dependency should have been added since the
beginning.
  * Perform user/group replacement on service files on dh_installsystemd.
There is no reason for us to keep various postinst scripts around just
to perform the user/group adjustment on systemd service files when we
can easily do that under the dh_installsystemd rule.

pagure (5.8.1+dfsg-2) unstable; urgency=medium

  * Mention pagure/utils.py in d/copyright.
  * Remove override_dh_installinit from d/rules.
  * Mark test B-D as "!nocheck".
Also, reorganize a few dependencies, and add "python3-bs4" to the
list.
  * Add Vcs-* fields.
  * Depend on httpd-wsgi3, instead of the Apache-specific package.
Thanks to Michael Fladischer (Closes: #952708)
  * Depend on mariadb | postgres | sqlite3.
  * Enable the testsuite, but make it always pass, for now.
The testsuite unfortunately contains several problems that need to be
fixed before we are able to run it "for real". Hopefully, these
problems will all be addressed in the next release.
  * Use /var/lib/pagure instead of /srv/pagure as HOME.
This is needed because Debian Policy explicitly says that /srv should
be reserved to the user, and no package must install files there.
