[Bug 484786] [NEW] Too easy to circumvent AppArmor using btrfs snapshots
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: apparmor I just realized that the btrfs snapshotting ioctl is usable by all users, not root as I previously assumed. This makes it concerningly easy for users on btrfs to defeat a path-based MAC framework like AppArmor. For example, consider the gdm-guest-session user. If I log into a gdm-guest-session on btrfs: (1) ls /home ==> Permission denied as expected, by AppArmor. (2) cd /tmp (3) btrfsctl -s test / (Make a snapshot of / in /tmp called test) (4) cd /tmp/test (5) Profit! Apparmor-unrestricted mirror of / in /tmp/test! As btrfs inevitably will become a mainstream filesystem, it's a good time to begin thinking about how to handle this situation. ** Affects: apparmor (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Too easy to circumvent AppArmor using btrfs snapshots https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/484786 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 481404] [NEW] Backport btrfs from upstream git head into Karmic's kernel
Public bug reported: The btrfs in 2.6.31 has some blemishes which have been addressed in Chris Mason's git (http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/mason /btrfs-unstable.git) pending merge into 2.6.32 Namely: * ENOSPC panics * Incorrect metadata reservation leads to disk full at somewhere around 70% of expected disk capacity * Huge performance increases due to smarter caching (for bootup, around a doubled speed) * Misc panics and oops The regression potential is minor: These are primarily bugfix releases backward and forward compatible for existing btrfs users, and btrfs doesn't touch anything in the kernel tree outside of itself, so there's no chance of regressions for non-btrfs users. In userspace, it'd be a good idea too to update btrfs-tools to Chris's git branch too, which adds the delete snapshot support in userland, but that's a much more minor concern compared to the kernel aspect of this. ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Backport btrfs from upstream git head into Karmic's kernel https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/481404 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Whether or not you feel Telepathy is "ready" is not the subject of this bug; the point is an uncaught exception allows Empathy to malfunction in an unexpected manner (the conversation in question will silently fail to transmit or receive messages), which is a remotely exploitable denial of service. temugen's patch is a great start to addressing the case that everyone is seeing, but in my opinion all the mentioned cases where an uncaught exception would bubble up to the conversation level should be addressed in a patch, then published to karmic-security. John, I am in total agreement with you that AA shouldn't be oopsing like this :) I will confirm that exactly what I did was on a stock AMD64 Karmic install, I unzippled that .zip into /tmp and ran ./epsxe. -- BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 0040 apparmor_bprm_set_creds https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/446164 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Umm, as a member of motu-sru, I'd hardly call it resolved. This bug was handled with no regard to the Stable Release Updates procedure. I do not see an ACK from someone on the team. [Bug 446164] Re: BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 00000040 apparmor_bprm_set_creds
I was getting it on a stock Karmic with no glib packages hackishly taken from Dapper. The bug seems to have something to do with UPX packed executables, as after unpacking with UPX, the oops no longer occurs. Interesting to note, I tried UPX packing a copy of everything in /usr/bin and nothing else seems to trigger this oops. -- BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 0040 apparmor_bprm_set_creds https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/446164 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 328089] Re: [Jaunty] splashy 0.3.13-3ubuntu1 fresh install conflicts with lsb-base
I just helped a confused user through this. It's important to note that none of the GUI package installation utilities is able to recover from this failure case to the point that the user can use the APT/dpkg subsystem any more without command-line twiddling. I understand and support the effort to fix lsb-base to make Splashy work, but at the same time I feel it's disappointing and just plain wrong that we are shipping two Ubuntu releases with an obviously known-broken package that will blow up the GUI package managers that non-technically-inclined users like to use. In the interim, can we agree on some mitigating solution to block users from installing the broken package? If we can't yank it out of the archive, SRU it without the lsb-logging-base.sh file? [Bug 445592] Re: Transmission Ext4 / data loss?
1 minute isn't an upper bound for the amount of in-transit data that can be lost; delayed allocation has to do with losing entire files (zero- size files), not just data. Nonetheless, I do agree with you that offering a persistent preallocation method like KTorrent does which tries to use FS-specific preallocation whenever possible is a good idea. -- Transmission Ext4 / data loss? https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/445592 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 410407] Re: flash does not recognise mouse clicks
Talk about the 64-bit native Flashplugin is off topic for this bug. It's not at all surprising that a flashplugin marked experimental by Adobe crashes, or that a crashed browser plugin without process isolation takes down the entire browser. [Bug 445592] Re: Transmission Ext4 / data loss?
No, that's likely not the case either. You lost data because it is in the writeback cache which hadn't been flushed to disk. Whether or not you fallocate(), the writeback cache is still used. To bypass that, you either flush to disk more often as a whole on your system, or have Transmission open its output file with O_SYNC. I wouldn't consider transmission downloads to be critical enough (unlike say saving an OpenOffice document) to deserve O_SYNC but if losing 100MB of in-transit data is a big deal for you, then you should definitely tune your VM subsystem to flush the writeback cache way more often. -- Transmission Ext4 / data loss? https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/445592 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 445592] Re: Transmission Ext4 / data loss?
Not surprising due to delayed allocation, if cache writeout pressure isn't high then this will happen. The "workaround" would be for transmission to periodically flush the filesystem but that'll just cause awful IO spiking latency and defeat the purpose of delayed allocation. If you'd rather not lose that much data, then perhaps you need a more aggressive dirty_writeback_centisecs value. -- Transmission Ext4 / data loss? https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/445592 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 410407] Re: flash does not recognise mouse clicks
I'd also like to point out, contrary to somewhat popular believe, this is not a "flash sometimes doesn't" or "once in a while"; for me and presumably most of the people commenting, this is ALWAYS the case. I am still unable to get any flash applets to register any mouse clicks. [Bug 410407] Re: flash does not recognise mouse clicks
That's an undesirable workaround through; the 64-bit Flash plugin is still marked experimental by Adobe, and you lose out on process isolation of nspluginwrapper; In addition, if you use any Adobe Air things, they won't work either. -- flash does not recognise mouse clicks https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/410407 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Now that WeeChat 0.3.0 is final and in Sid, IMO it would be a huge improvement to have over Weechat 0.2.6, especially since the upstream community has largely switched their plugin development effort towards the improved new release.
