[Bug 1864061] Re: PCI/internal sound card not detected

2020-05-10 Thread John Hart
I have had this since I upgraded from U18.04 to U20.04. I am using kernel
5.4.0-7626-generic #30~1588169883~20.04~bbe668a-Ubuntu. I can get my sound/mic
input to work after using the following command: sudo apt install --reinstall
alsa-base alsa-utils pulseaudio linux-sound-base libasound2
sudo alsa force-reload
pulseaudio --start
That makes it work until i LOG OUT, then it is all gone and when I restart I am
back to Dummy Output.
This is frustrating. What is the patch or fix?

[Bug 792355] Re: gwibber don't start after the latest update

2011-09-03 Thread John Hart
I am using version 3.1.0 which on this site has not been released yet? What is
going on with Gibber? The home web site is touting version 2.3.
Well my ver 3.1.0 will not update the page so I do not get new posts.

Is there anyone who knows how the code in Gwibber works and can fix it
so it works. This is really frustrating and kind of make one want to
just uninstall the whole kit-n-kabootle.

It appears as if the developers have gone many different ways with all
these versions and incorrect web pages. I suggest pulling it all
together and straighten it out so it is a workable application.

[Bug 659104] Re: suspension in ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick)

2011-01-06 Thread John Hart
My laptop will not suspend or hibernate. When I press the Fn + F4 key

I have a dual boot computer (Ubuntu 10.10 and Win7), and the Win7 will

suspend and hibernate, and that Ubuntu OS has a bug or problem with it.

I do not know how to figure out how to correct this problem.

 Hi John,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try
with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are
 available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid.

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a
 Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal). It will automatically
gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

 apport-collect -p linux 330335

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would
be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the
issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once
you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-
testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon
next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and
deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your

 Thanks in advance.

To finish authorizing the application identified as apport-collect to
access Launchpad on your behalf you should go back to the application
window in which you started the process and inform it that you have done
your part of the process.

I have done my part.

[Bug 505688] [NEW] Netbook will not hibernate

2010-01-10 Thread John Hart
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook Remix. Acer Aspire One AOA150, with 1.5GB RAM.
When I shut the netbook up it should hibernate but it does not. The
screen stays illuminated and the fan continues to run, and I presume
that the unit is continuing to operate. When I try to restore
operation, the screen is locked up and there is no cursor movement and
none of the keys are recognized. I am submitting this report using a
computer other than the netbook so I cannot provide the requested info.

[Bug 255651] Re: floppy disk drive not detected (module not loaded) in Intrepid and Jaunty

2009-12-23 Thread John Hart
I keep seeing that this bug has been fixed. I would like to see the fix
so that I can FIX it on my computer. Maybe someone can help me with
it as I have tried most all of the suggested fixes and none have worked
yet.

Maybe a ask me to look at X and report what I have, then offer the
next step based on the response. Somehow it has to be made to work.

Thanks.

[Bug 271019] Re: kernel does not detect card reader if card is inserted in reader before boot

2009-12-13 Thread John Hart
Updated BIOS (to ver0.3310) did NOT correct problem. But I did learn
how to update the BIOS. I would like to know more about how the updated
BIOS correct the problem as I now have the most current version of the
BIOS and I still have the problem.

I guess now I will have to do the grub update method to get the right
media slot to be hot plugable. The left slot has always worked fine. I
do not like leaving an SD card in the right slot as it sticks out too
far. The left slot the SD card is almost flush with the netbook case.

From the ACER web site: How to update the BIOS

Create a recovery USB drive to update the Bios on the unit. The specific
steps to perform this recovery with the USB drive are:

   1. Download Extract AS1_BIOS_3310.zip
   2. Rename the Bios name from 3310.fd to ZG5IA32.FD. (Note use all CAPS in
the file name)
   3. Copy ZG5IA32.FD and Flashit.exe to USB flash drive.
   4. Start the restoration process:

  A. Plug the AC Adapter into the unit.
  B. Insert the USB flash drive into a USB port.
  C. Press and Hold down the Fn and the Esc keys together.
  D. Keep these keys held down and press power.
  E. When the unit's power light comes on release the Fn and Esc keys.
  F. After the keys have been released the power light will start to blink.
  G. Let the unit run and after approximately 1-7 minutes, the unit should
reboot.
  H. Video should now be restored.

The above worked for me. It actually worked on the second try, so if it does
not work at first try several times.

[Bug 271019] Re: kernel does not detect card reader if card is inserted in reader before boot

2009-11-09 Thread John Hart
Thanks dni, but I am confused, I looked at both of the web sites you
listed and the authors used different methods for flashing the BIOS.
Which is correct or which works? Or are there two (or more) ways to get
there? and both work. BTW my AOA 150-1249 has the V0.3114 Version of
the BIOS.

I Googled and did find more ways, that is what has me wondering which
of the ways should be followed.

[Bug 255651] Re: floppy disk drive not detected (module not loaded) in Intrepid and Jaunty

2009-11-02 Thread John Hart
My BIOS has the floppy drive selected, so it should know that a floppy
drive is present. Also my OS has loaded the floppy kernel on my desktop
(the computer with a floppy drive), The same OS has not loaded the
floppy kernel on my laptop. That indicated to me that the OS detects the
floppy drive, and when found loads the kernel for it, but the OS cannot
for some reason access it.

I know floppy disks are old technology, but it should not be that much
of a problem to get them to work with a modern OS. Of course as soon as
I can access my floppy disks, I will move the data to CD-R's and be done
with it. I just want to get my old data files (image files, documents,
and other files)

Since I have two desktops that exhibit the same lack of being able to
access the floppy drive, one PC being over 5 years old the other newer,
at least one of them should be able to access the floppy drive.

I am sure the older Linux distros could access the floppy drive, so why
can't that access be recreated?

Re: [Bug 349519] Re: Switch Desktop Mode corrupted settings

2009-08-15 Thread John Hart
I am not a Pro, but I will try to help. First make sure you have
installed GDebi Package Installer from the Add/Remove Applications menu.

Then down load to your desktop the patch.

Open the patch with GDebi Package installer. (right click on the file on
your desktop, it should default to open with the GDebi Installer).

I think then, you can reboot and try the switch again and it should
work.

[Bug 366874] Re: netbook remix - icons overlap in 9.04 jaunty NBR release on Asus EEE1000

2009-05-20 Thread John Hart
Mine cleared up after shutting down and rebooting. The event has not
reoccurred since.

Maybe your problem will be solved by a shutdown and reboot. By the way
I shut down for the night and rebooted in the morning, which put 10
hours between.

Re: [Bug 271019] Re: kernel does not detect card reader if card is inserted in reader before boot

2009-05-07 Thread John Hart
Thanks: I used your number one Option and all is well. I did get some
text during the boot about not being able to recognise pcie02 or
something. It went by so fast it was hard to read it all. My Acer ONE
will now recognize media cards when inserted after boot. Actually I now
believe everything works on my Acer ONE. Even the WiFi switch will turn
off/on the WiFi and the WiFi LEDs will blink on WiFi signal traffic.
The onboard camera works. The speakers work, the earphone works. I
believe that the Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 is a winner.

By-the-way everything works on my Acer Travelmate laptop, with the
exception of the WiFi LED, which stays on ALL the time the computer is
on, no matter whether or no the Wifi is on or off. And with 9,04 the
WiFi switch will work like it was supposed to do. I also have two
desktops using 9.04 (one is primary, the other a standby)

Now for the personal stuff: Thanks to you and all of the Launchpad team
that help us out here in the field to get our computers to work. I know
I appreciate all the help I get from the Launchpad. One thing I have
found is that when one person takes the time to send an email with good
instructions, then I have gotten good results. Sometime the posts on
the Launchpad assumes that everyone is as experienced and knowledgeable
about Ubuntu GNU/Linux.

Sorry I haven't been back for a few days.

 @dnl

 Sure, here is my information:

 Model: AOA 110-1698 (8.9)
 BIOS: v0.3301
 SW: ubuntu-9.04-netbook-remix-i386.img
Status: exhibited issues until 'pciehp.pciehp_force=1' was used in the kernel
boot command. After this it worked perfectly, minus the display of extra
kernel messages during startup and during wake-up after suspend.

 @John Hart

Hi! Yes, if you apply the 'pciehp.pciehp_force=1' only during the Grub
edit screen it will only work that one time. This is good for testing,
but not great if you want to include that boot option permanently.

The 'sudo vi' routine mentioned above works,... just as long as you know
how to use vi. I for one do not so I just prefer to use gedit (the real
 name for Text Editor). :P

Now as for how to modify the file in /boot/grub/menu.lst, I offer three
options. Pick the one you're most comfortable with. :)

 OPTION 1:
Open the Terminal via AccessoriesTerminal and then type (or copy-n-paste)
the line sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst. It will likely prompt you for a
password. After which, the menu.lst file will open -- if you drop all the
way to the end of the file, you should see the boot options available (the
first line should start with something like title Ubuntu 9.04,
 kernel 2.6.28-11-generic).

You will want to append that code right after the kernel line, which
ends with ro quiet splash so that it becomes ro quiet splash
pciehp.pciehp_force=1. Then save and reboot your Acer.

 OPTION 2:
Same as OPTION 1, but instead of going through the Terminal, you can just
press ALT+F2 to bring up the Run window and type in gksu gedit
/boot/grub/menu.lst to open the file automatically. Or just put in gksu
gedit if you want to open the Text Editor with Root access only and then
navigate to /boot/grub/menu.lst yourself using FileOpen.

This is particularly handy if you don't like hanging around terminal
windows -- but by the sound of it, you don't seem like someone who's
 afraid of the CLI. :)

 OPTION 3:
This is a bit dangerous, but in the same ALT+F2 Run window, you can type in
gksu nautilus. This will open up your file manager with Root Access. Here
you can navigate your entire system being able to add, edit, or delete
anything with absolute impunity. Just go to the /boot/grub folder, open
menu.lst, make your changes, save and you're done! :)

Just be sure not to TOUCH anything else while in this mode as this is
the perfect environment to,... *cough cough*... accidentally delete your
one and only kernel. This is only recommended if you want the absolute
comfort of a GUI option, are very very careful, and/or want the
educational experience of navigating the inner recesses of your file
 system. ;)

And that's all I can offer, the rest is up to you. Good luck! :)

[Bug 271019] Re: kernel does not detect card reader if card is inserted in reader before boot

2009-05-07 Thread John Hart
This problem has a solution: see the post by C-quel above. Those
options will work. I used OPTION 1 and my system is good to go now.
Just as he reports, both media card readers will read media cards
inserted after boot.

I now can report 100% complete operation on my Acer Aspire ONE.

I now have Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 on four computers and working good on
all four. 2-desktops, 1-laptop, 1-netbook. IMHO Jaunty is the best
yet for Ubuntu. Yes I know there is a slight regression in the full
screen video playing, but that will soon be correced by the fine folks
on the Launchpad Team.

I have to give a BIG Thanks for C-quel for his excellent instructions on
the media card fix. THANKS!

[Bug 255651] Re: floppy disk drive not detected (module not loaded) in Intrepid and Jaunty

2009-05-06 Thread John Hart
I have read through this bug thread and I sure am confused as to the
fix. I have not been able to use a floppy drive with Ubuntu 8.04, 8.10
and now 9.04.

Would someone publish the fix so that the floppy drives will work.

In the thread I read that someone else has the floppy drive light on all
the time. The response was that the cable is backwards. That is not
the truth, as I have two desktops with floppy drive lights that are on
all the time. I have tried the cable in all four ways and it stays on.
I have made sure the red indicator strip is towards the number one
terminal. In short I have done all the physical things one can do and I
still have the led staying on, in two (2) different desktops.

I tried to add Floppy to my /etc/modules file and I got a message that I
did not have authorization to make a change. So I know I was not doing
it correctly. Some instructions in that area would help me. Thanks.

[Bug 271019] Re: kernel does not detect card reader if card is inserted in reader before boot

2009-05-05 Thread John Hart
I still have the problem: With my netbook, If I start with an SC card
in the left slot on boot-up then the left slot will recognize card and
allow removal and it will still recognize it upon reinsertion. The
right media slot will not recognize a media card. If I reverse it and
have an SD card in the right slot then it will work fine, but the left
media slot will not recognize a media card.

I tried to add the pciehp.pciehp_force=1 to the grub menu, but it did
not persist past that boot. On the next boot it was not there. I then
tried to use the sudo vi method, but I could not make any changes to
the file. Maybe I need more instruction on using that method.

Re: [Bug 271019] Re: kernel does not detect card reader if card is inserted in reader before boot

2009-04-26 Thread John Hart
I am wondering if my problem is that I upgraded to the regular 9.04
instead of the netbook remix? In any case I have two computers that I
tried to upgrade and both have Partial upgrades. I noticed a lot of
repositories were disabled for the upgrade and one was the netbook remix.

Maybe you know of what I should look for to correct.

Maybe I should download the Netbook Remix from the Ubuntu site. I just
hate to put it on a USB flash drive, as I had a lot of problems doing
that the first time.

I just tried again to have the computer to see the SD card. I tried
both slots and still no recognition of a media card.

Thanks for your help

I do not know how to interpret this error. (I am only a 1/8 Linux geek,

Help would be appreciated, as I would like to upgrade via net as this
netbook does not have an optical drive.

I now get no sound at all.
I am not sure where to direct my energy on trying to correct this problem. It
would be nice to have sound on this computer.

I have PulseAudio and I have no idea of how to set up and use it. Maybe
that is the problem, I just don't know.

Some response would be appreciated. thanks

[Bug 115579] Re: Suspend (S3) not waking an Acer TM C110 in Feisty

2009-03-11 Thread John Hart
My Acer Travelmate also does not wake from Suspend. I am using Ubuntu 8.10
I have attached my dmesg output for review.

Situation: when I leave my laptop ON and go away from it for awhile it
goes to the Suspend mode. When push a key (usually I push the space
bar) my background will display without the panels. Nokey will work,
even the [Ctr] + [Alt] + [Backspace] sequence. My way out is to press
the ON button for long enough to shut down the computer, then I start it
normally.

[Bug 255651] Re: floppy disk drive not detected (module not loaded) in Intrepid Alpha 4 kernel 2.6.27-2

2008-11-11 Thread John Hart
I have had the same problem on two desktops. Both had Ubuntu 8.04LTS
and neither would mount the floppy drive and the light stayed on all the
time for both of them. On one of the desktops I have upgraded to 8.10
and I still have the problem I initially tried the floppy cable in each
of the four different configurations without any success. I now know
that the cable is connected correctly and that it is the OS. On the
desktop that still has 8.04LTS the floppy icon does show up in the
[Places] menu, but not on the 8.10 desktop.

I am hoping that the developers will find a solution for all of us in
this matter.

[Bug 254009] Re: Unable to mount floppy drives in Intrepid

2008-08-27 Thread John Hart
I have two PC with 8.04 Ubuntu and neither will mount the floppy drives
and the floppy drive activity light stays on the whole time. I have
tried different ribbon cables, change the hookup for different ways,
even got the floppy manufacturer to replace the new drive. On the new PC
no floppy shows up in the [Places][Computer] and on the rebuilt PC the
floppy drive shows up.

My main PC is a AMD Athlon 64 2X (operating at 32), 2 GB RAM, DVD-RW,
DVD-ROM, Floppy drive, media card reader, 320 GB HD, PNY GPU.

I have rebuild another PC by installing a new MoBo, case fan, and Power
Supply and using all the old drives case. I get the same floppy
situation with this PC also. Floppy light stays on all the time. The
unit is an old eMachine with a DVD-RW, CD-ROM, Floppy drive, media card
reader, AMD Athlon XP, 1 GB RAM, 120GB HD, D-Link WiFi.
