[Bug 877002] Re: Applications Lens (and apps in the Dash) not immediately available after login

2012-01-21 Thread John Williams
Yup I am in the same boat. The lens works in other user profiles
immediately. I have tried reseting user to default settings to no avail.
Is there any work around to find apps? Help

2011-04-25 Thread John Williams
Update - after pulling the latest packages, the problem has shifted
somewhat.

>From what I can tell, nouveau is now behaving itself more gracefully in
its failure to grab the nvidia chipset, and no longer interfering with
suspend/resume which is working perfectly now.

Here's what I get from nouveua in dmesg now:

[Bug 299274] [NEW] Network Manager detects but cannot connect with Dell 5530

2008-11-17 Thread Barry John WIlliams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

The Dell 5530 integrated 3G card is detected by NetworkManager, it
displays 3 available connections after configuration, but neither of
them connect.

I've been able to get the card working on a stock Ubuntu Intrepid
(2.6.17-7) kernel with a wvdial.conf script. I'd rather be able to use
network manager for obvious reasons.

I refer to a thread in the ubuntu forums which contains the AT commands
to get the modem up and running on.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=979587

Ubuntu Release:
Description:Ubuntu 8.10
Release:8.10

network-manager:
  Installed: 0.7~~svn20081018t105859-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 0.7~~svn20081018t105859-0ubuntu1

 *** 0.7~~svn20081018t105859-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I expect the mobile broadband modem to connect after configuration.

It does not connect after configuration - no message explaining why
either.

[Bug 63989] Re: Orinoco_pci affected by re-enabled prism2 drivers

2007-11-06 Thread John Williams
Brent,

You should be able to add the NM-applet to the top bar. That gives a
rudimentary signal bar monitor.

Glad you got it working. I am having an occasional crash in hostap_pci
upon resume. Driver still sounds a bit unstable. Good thing is the
Ubuntu community will fix it quickly. Much better than the "other" OS...

[Bug 63989] Re: Orinoco_pci affected by re-enabled prism2 drivers

2007-11-05 Thread John Williams
Got it working!

I rebooted to 2.6.17-10 and finally got NM to accept the WEP key and it
works. Mine is the IBM T30 with the Intersil Prism 2.5 pci card. So I
rebooted to 2.6.22-16 and it works there also. ??? Not sure what is
going on. On my router, I run 128 bit enc. I used the 64/128 Hex key
option, typed in the hex string, and selected shared key and it worked.

So, seems to be working fine for me now...

upon reboot on my T30 with the Prism card. It sees my access point, and
shows signal in NM but does not accept the web encryption key and will
not assign an IP address. Double checked to make sure it is correct key.
It is. hostap_pci is loaded...

Go to System -> Preferences -> Main Menu and open the editor. Select any

insert a check in the box. Essentially, will not toggle the options
on/off and will not change the menu options after closing the applet.

[Bug 108928] Re: Scrambled Keys in feisty ubuntu desktop

2007-05-04 Thread John Williams
This workaround also worked for me. Feisty value was us-101, was blank
on edgy. Created new bogus value (easy since kbd is munged) of "c.b" and
removed us-101 entry. exited the editor. btw, to bring up the gconf-
editor, navigate thru the places menu to /usr/bin/gconf-editor and
double click it. navigate to /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd and
edit the layout field. Leave the kbd.sysbackup alone. log out of to gdm
screen and log back in...

[Bug 108928] Re: Scrambled Keys in feisty ubuntu desktop

2007-05-02 Thread John Williams
Is tightVNC better at determining the correct map? That was suggested as
something to try... Is this a vnc client or server issue? Is it
possible to bring up the control center to correct this. Awaiting an
upstream fix is a bit worrisome

What changed to cause edgy to work and feisty to not. In my case I am
running feisty in Dom0 (xen) and edgy and feisty in domU's. Edgy works
fine and Feisty fails. Followed the XenOnFeisty howto to hack gdm...

[Bug 110024] xen pciback fails to pass device to domU

2007-04-25 Thread John Williams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xen-image-2.6.19-4-generic

The problem is that I am trying to pass my pci capture card (bt878) to
domU. I used pciback on the boot cmd line and blacklisted as much bttv
stuff as I could.

blacklist is -

# blacklist video drivers
blacklist bttv
blacklist bt878
blacklist snd_bt87x
blacklist dvb_bt8xx

I see a dmesg saying the device is being seized.

[ 0.447738] pciback :02:02.0: seizing device
[ 0.447805] pciback :02:02.1: seizing device

But when I bring up the guest I get this in the dom0 dmesg

pciback: vpci: :02:02.0: assign to virtual slot 0
pciback pci-1-0: 22 Couldn't locate PCI device (:02:02.0)! perhaps already
in-use?

lsmod is -

[Bug 66254] Re: empty CD not correctly recognized by hal

2007-04-20 Thread John Williams
In thinking about this some more, I am wondering if this problem is
related to the change from PATA to SATA drivers in 2.6.20. I wonder if
the old IDE driver has some special code to handle older drives that
gave bogus data. That is the only reason I can think of to be causing
this sort of problem between edgy and Feisty

[Bug 66254] Re: empty CD not correctly recognized by hal

2007-04-18 Thread John Williams
Thorsten, does cdrecord work properly? In my case, cdrecord works but
CD-Creator does not.

My read of the hal code is that it is at the mercy of the drive firmware
(or device driver). It performs no added value other than issueing the
ioctl and mapping the content appropriately.

[Bug 66254] Re: empty CD not correctly recognized by hal

2007-04-18 Thread John Williams
Both good points. Here is my view/opinion on how to proceed. BTW, this
will have to be fixed upstream in Gnome...

First, cdrecord probably does not check the capacity prior to recording,
and will fail if the eventutal amount of data to be copied to the drive
exceeds the capacity of the cd.

So, it appears that we have an issue with older drives that cannot
accurately predict the size of an unformatted media. It could be a mini-
disk of 200meg or so, a 650 meg disc or 700 meg disk. Newer drives
probably have a better shot at predicting the size of the media.

My recommendation is to change the way that CD-Creator prompts for the
message. If the drive says it is blank but the size is 0 or very small,
say that they are unable to determine the capacity of the media, do you
want to proceed? If the drive is blank and the capacity is non-zero,
proceed as is now done. i.e. make it a soft error, not a hard one.

[Bug 66254] Re: empty CD not correctly recognized by hal

2007-04-17 Thread John Williams
BTW, This drive is a CDWriter IDE 8432. This was a fairly common drive.
Bet that most of these type reports are due to the various rebadged
drives of this type. This one was made by BTC for CDWriter, I think.
Best to defer this bug and recommend that they upgrade to newer hdwe. No
firmware avail for this old of a drive.

[Bug 66254] Re: empty CD not correctly recognized by hal

2007-04-17 Thread John Williams
I think this may be due to buggy cd rom firmware, if my rusty code
reading skills are still valid. In probe_volume.c, it appears that the
ioctl data back from the driver is bogus for blank media. For sure, the
disc.type field is being marked as unknown. If I put in a non-blank
disk, I get valid sizes. A blank disk gives bad info... Only way that
probe_volume.c gets this is from the ioctl.

So, my opinion is that this is a driver problem, not a hal bug.

My drive is an old IDE CD_ROM Writer. cdrom links to sr_mod.

Could this perhaps be related to the ide to sata changes of late?
Probably still a firmware bug...

[Bug 96511] Re: Feisty beta1 raid is broken

2007-04-13 Thread John Williams
I am seeing this problem as well...

To continue the boot, I mount -t ext3 /dev/md0 /root and hit CTL-D, then
the system boots. I installed the alternate beta, and installed all of
the updates. The mdadm update ran a update-initramfs command to update
the initrd.img files, but still fails the same way. Was hoping that the
dailys would be better, but based on the above comments, that appears
not the case.

I see that it complains about a missing /etc/fstab. Could that be the
problem? How can it mount root if it does not know where it is?

John
