2009-06-22 Thread Joseph Smidt
Thanks for your bug report. Don't worry about being new to Linux, you
did good with the bug report. Could you open up a terminal and type
this inside:

alsamixer

This should tell you if your volume is turned up on your machine.
Please make sure the volumes are all turned up on your machine.

Also, while you are waiting for this bug to be fixed you should make
sure and ask for help on the Ubuntu Forums: http://ubuntuforums.org/.
They are usually able to find work arounds to get your system working
while the developers work on this bug.

2009-06-22 Thread Joseph Smidt
The sane-utils package is build with the sane-backends source code. I
don't see that this was recently built for Jaunty:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/jaunty/+source/sane-backends/. The latest
changelog entry is in March. This is why I wonder if you have some 3rd
party repository enabled supplying a sane-utils package that is not the
official Ubuntu one.

bugs.

[Bug 390372] Re: default terminal does not have an effect

2009-06-21 Thread Joseph Smidt
Thank you for this bug report. I believe that the terminal accessed by
Application-accessories-terminal is hard coded to be the gnome-
terminal. I believe the problem is setting xterm as default in the
preferred applications doesn't change this fact. I believe therefore
the solution to your problem is you need
Application-accessories-terminal to be whatever your preferred
terminal is and not just be hard coded to always be the gnome-terminal.

[Bug 390372] Re: default terminal does not have an effect

2009-06-21 Thread Joseph Smidt
What's going on is that the menu item Application-accessories-terminal
has a desktop file that tells that menu entry what to do when it is
pressed. It is told to launch a gnome-terminal.

I believe if the desktop file for that menu entry gave a command for the
terminal in your preferred applications your problem would be solved.
Therefore I am switching this bug to gnome-terminal since I believe they
handle the desktop file for this menu entry.

Ah, good, so the problem seems to be an issue with audacious. This same
bug was reported today here as well:

you both are using Ubuntu 8.04, an older version of Ubuntu than the
latest version of Ubuntu 9.04 I am running so it is hard for me to
confirm the bug. However, the fact that this other individual has had
this issue running Hardy leads me to believe this is an issue with
audacious in Hardy.

[Bug 319096] Re: Please upgrade git-core to 1.6.2

2009-03-12 Thread Joseph Smidt
Scott,

On Jan. 19, well before the feature freeze, a bug report was filed
to bring git 1.6.0.4 to 1.6.0.6 to fix bugs and the patch to do so was
even provided. You had some initial issues with the patch, but after
they were addressed you assigned yourself to the bug report on Jan. 20.

Then you decided to wait until after the feature freeze to say
None of these bugs seem severe enough to warrant breaking... Feature
Freeze.

Scott, is it standard practice for member's of Ubuntu's technical board
to assign themselves to bugs with patches submitted over a month before
the feature freeze then wait until after the feature freeze and say
sorry, can't fix bugs after the feature freeze. Perhaps this is why
Ubuntu has so many un-fulfilled confirmed bug reports.

Please:

1. Don't assign yourself to bugs of packages you have a public disdain
for [1] if you won't patch them.

2. Don't assign yourself to bugs with a patch, then wait until after
feature freeze to say sorry, it's now too late.

PS. To be fair, most other Ubuntu developers do upload your patches
when you get patches into the form they request when submitted a month
before the feature freeze.

[Bug 327608] Re: Flash does not work in Firefox 3.0

2009-02-10 Thread Joseph Smidt
Thank you for this bug report. Firefox-3.0 cannot by itself view flash
videos. You need to install a flash player. Flash Player 10 is
available to use for viewing flash videos and works quite well. To
install it go System-Administration-Software Sources-Third-Party
Software and the enable the partner repository. After this is done
install the package adobe-flashplugin. You will then have to restart
Firefox.

Now, if you have already installed a flash player, what package did you

[Bug 327019] Re: Tan(90°)=-8,618206661e+2 14

2009-02-08 Thread Joseph Smidt
Thank you for this bug report. The problem has been reported upstream
to the gcalctool developers:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=571007. This is a bug that
really needs to be fixed by these upstream developers, unless somebody
has a patch for it.

This message has been forwarded upstream:
Tan(90) is technically undefined (Though conceptually one usually thinks of it
as infinity). When you enter Tan(90) into gcalctool you get
Tan(90°)=-8.618206661e+214 which is a finite number. Though I understand a
number of this magnitude in practice, is though of as infinite, it would be
nice if the calculator returned the correct answer.

[Bug 327048] Re: Open Office's icons are all gone!

2009-02-08 Thread Joseph Smidt
Thank you for this bug report. Can you try to explain in detail what
the sequence of events were before you noticed this problem. Were the
icons there one day and gone the next? If so, what did you do in that
time? We need to see how we can reproduce this bug so as to figure out
what is wrong exactly.

In the meantime, this is the type of thing it is good to ask about on
the Ubuntu Forums: http://ubuntuforums.org/. They usually give good
advice about how to fix something that breaks.

[Bug 327030] Re: I can't receive any sound on my computer.

2009-02-08 Thread Joseph Smidt
Thank you for this bug report.

First, you said this bug affects Firefox. Is this the only program
having issues with sound, or are you having sound issues in general.
(With everything?)

Second, we need to diagnose what the problem is. Could you open up a
terminal and enter this command:

aplay -l

and cut and paste the results? Also, could you issue the command in a
terminal:

alsamixer -Dhw

and tell us if the volume is turned up all the way for all things?

In addition to submitting this information, you should go to the Ubuntu
Forums: http://ubuntuforums.org/. They are usually very helpful in
helping you fix your system. If in the process you discover what is
happening please let us know here too. Thanks.
