[Bug 1912034] Re: At end of install process, installer said "fatal error"

2021-01-19 Thread Ken T
Thanks, Chris. I guess we can chalk this one up as an edge case, as I
imagine that most folks just install one (or maybe 2) OS's, and maybe
people who are doing multi-boot installs could be assumed to know enough
to easily sort that out without further prompting/guidance from the
installer itself.

I suspect that in my case, the easier option might simply be to back up
my data to an external drive, then obliterate the existing partition
table and just install Mate freshly over the top of it. A crude method
perhaps, but it should work easily enough.

Thanks again for your help - unless you want to comment further, I am
happy to close this ticket now.

Cheers,
Ken.

[Bug 1912034] Re: At end of install process, installer said "fatal error"

2021-01-17 Thread Ken T
Hi Chris, thanks for your reply. Can you point me to a link for some
"how-to" instructions on creating / resizing that partition, and any
necessary configuration of it? I haven't created a dedicated EFI/ESP
partition thus far, only what appears in the attached screenshot of
GParted.

Many thanks,
Ken.

[Bug 1912034] Re: At end of install process, installer said "fatal error"

2021-01-15 Thread Ken T
So, after the above, another dialogue box appeared which said "an
unrecoverable error occurred", and said that a desktop session would be
started so that I could investigate the error, which then booted me into
a MATE live session. As I didn't know how to investigate the issue, I
simply attempted to reboot into the MATE partition.

At this point, I got a black screen with white text saying:
"You are in emergency mode. After logging in, type 'journalctl -xb' to view
system logs, 'systemctl reboot' to reboot, ..." - none of the options
presented got me to a workable desktop.

Thanks,
K.

[Bug 1912034] [NEW] At end of install process, installer said "fatal error"

2021-01-15 Thread Ken T
Public bug reported:

...and yet another dialogue box said "Installation complete. You need to
restart the computer..."

This happened while installing Ubuntu Mate 20.10 onto a partition
alongside other existing partitions with Ubuntu & Linux Mint installed
on them. I nominated the new partition with Ubuntu Mate (sda5)
mountpoint as root, as the installer wouldn't let me continue without
doing so, even though I had done this previously with other installs
alongside this one on the same laptop, and Grub 2.x is already on this
computer & has worked fine at bootup.

Thanks,
Ken.

[Bug 1872392] [NEW] Ubuntu Studio Installer makes a mess of Ubuntu's "Show Applications" screen

2020-04-12 Thread Ken T
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
Install Ubuntu 20.04 beta (vanilla)
Install Ubuntu Studio tools via official installer

(See screenshot)
Before installing Studio's tools, the "Show Applications" screen showed actual
applications. Now, that screen has increased from 2 pages of apps to 10 (!!!),
and is cluttered up with a bunch of things that aren't stand-alone apps, for
example:
- AT1 / Zita AT1: can be clicked on from the "Show applications" screen, but
seemingly does nothing
- lots of things that I presume are audio or video filters, or other plug-ins
for Studio applications. These plug-ins have an icon that reads "LSP" and
include Analysers, Compressors, Delay Effects, etc.

Preferred behaviour:
1) Hide filters & plug-ins from the "Show Applications" screen, & display them
separately to apps. Maybe viewable under a dedicated tab?

2) Make it easily apparent to tell which filters/plug-ins are associated
with which app or apps.

Thanks,
Ken.

[Bug 1872389] [NEW] minor usability quirk at package selection screen

2020-04-12 Thread Ken T
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
Install Ubuntu 20.04 beta
Install Ubuntu Tools on top with official installer

On the package selection screen, select whichever packages you want from
the left-hand sidebar (I'm pretty sure I selected all of them, but
possibly not the bottom one.) Then press the "enable backports PPA"
button, and all the packages you've just selected are de-selected, and
you then need to go and reselect each package before proceeding. Not
difficult, but less than optimal.

Preferred behaviour:
If enabling the backports PPA needs to occur before selecting packages, make
that step precede package selection;
OR
retain present installer workflow, but don't de-select packages when the
"enable backports PPA" is pressed.

Another improvement would see an option for "select all Ubuntu Studio
packages" (probably excluding gnome-branding), rather than having to
select each package individually. I think this might be like a "full
install / custom install" kind of option, such as seen in VLC, Libre
Office, etc.

Thanks,
Ken.

[Bug 1872386] [NEW] Minor cosmetic issues in ubuntustudio-installer

2020-04-12 Thread Ken T
Public bug reported:

1) One typo in a dialogue box, and 2) poorly-formatted text in another
dialogue box.

Steps to reproduce:
Install Ubuntu 20.04 beta (vanilla)
Install Ubuntu Studio tools on top of this, using the official installer. Both
dialogue boxes appear either near or at the end of the install process.

1) Typo:
(See screenshot) "All Ubuntu Studio packages are all ready installed" - should
be "...are already installed"

2) A dialogue box popped up at the end of the install process, saying
something like "restart computer in order to access Real-time kernel
functionality". I didn't grab a screenshot of it, but the text in this
dialogue box is poorly-formatted & in an odd, heavy font.

Thanks,
Ken.

[Bug 1870928] [NEW] Application Launcher: adding applications to panel works inconsistently

2020-04-05 Thread Ken T
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
- within Application Launcher, right-click on various apps, then select "Add to
panel (Widget)"

Expected outcome:
All apps should have their thumbnail appear on the panel.

Actual outcome:
The first three apps I added had their thumbnail appear AOK (Firefox, Dolphin,
LibreOffice). When I added Konsole to the panel (and then KSysGuard & others),
the panel visibly altered as if something had been added each time, but the
thumbnail for each was missing, and the hover text for each reads "Icon" and
nothing happens when I click there. I right-clicked on all the panel items I
added & deleted them all (including the first three) and then re-added them
using the same method as initially, but now none of them are added
successfully, and they all create the same blank spot on the panel with the
"icon" hover text. See screenshot.

Thanks,
Ken.

[Bug 1766758] Re: Gnome software can uninstall some programs but not others

2018-05-02 Thread Ken T
So, I've freshly installed the release version of Xubuntu 18.04 and
applied updates, and now Gnome-Mines uninstalls as expected.

However, the "SGT Puzzles Collection" which came bundled with Xubuntu
still refuses to uninstall properly. Gnome Software says it's removed,
yet that cluster of games still appears on the XFCE menu and is
launchable.

Cheers,
Ken.

[Bug 1747329] Re: Workaround needed to boot from USB stick - "gfxboot.c32: not a COM32R image"

2018-04-26 Thread Ken T
Hi sudodus,

I'm not certain exactly which machine I used to create the startup disk
which caused me trouble (I have a few *buntu machines around running
various daily builds, plus an Ubuntu 14.04 LTS one also). It's likely
that the program causing problems was the one on the 14.04 machine, as
this problem hasn't occurred with every startup disk I've made recently,
and I've made them from various machines, even the daily builds.

So, I'm happy to call this resolved...

Thanks!

[Bug 1747329] Re: Workaround needed to boot from USB stick - "gfxboot.c32: not a COM32R image"

2018-04-24 Thread Ken T
I've yet to re-test this with the Lubuntu daily build, but creating a
startup boot stick with Disks as described above resolved the same issue
I was having with a Xubuntu daily build.

So, USB Startup Disk Creator seems to have been at the core of the
issue.

Ken.

[Bug 1764932] Re: Xubuntu 18.04 i386 beta 2: After splash screen, installation hangs on black screen

2018-04-24 Thread Ken T
I can confirm that the latest daily build installed AOK for me (I'm
writing from it now). I won't be able to test it extensively between now
& launch, but it looks fine. I'm having some problems with Gnome
Software 3.28.1, but will investigate these and report separately.

It seems likely that the root cause of this ticket was the USB startup
disk creator after all...

Thanks,
Ken.

[Bug 1764932] Re: Xubuntu 18.04 i386 beta 2: After splash screen, installation hangs on black screen

2018-04-24 Thread Ken T
Hi Paul,

I'm downloading it now, and will report back.

Going by recent comments made on my other bug report (Bug #1747329), and
the pointer there to Bug #1325801, it would seem that this issue may not
be to do with Xubuntu (or Ubuntu) per se, but with my use of the "USB
startup disk creator" which comes with Ubuntu...

Thanks,
Ken.

Confirmed, insofar as I've had similar difficulty trying to identify
which package to lodge a bug against when it wasn't related to a

evident on that same build of Budgie. Will test again from the latest daily

[Bug 1764932] [NEW] Xubuntu 18.04 i386 beta 2: After splash screen, installation hangs on black screen

2018-04-17 Thread Ken T
Public bug reported:

Downloaded Xubuntu 18.04 i386 beta 2, checked sha256sum, created
bootable USB via a known-working ubuntu machine.

The first thing that appeared was an error message "gfxboot.c32: not a
COM32R image", but I pressed tab, typed "live" and hit enter, and the
installation proceeded. Xubuntu splash screen appeared with loading
animation. Once this disappeared, I saw a line of text flash up at the
top of the screen (too quick for me to read), then the installation
hangs on a black screen, with a grey bar faintly visible across the top
of the screen. I tried the install process again, but got the same
result.

Now, a few footnotes:
1) the error message "gfxboot.c32: not a COM32R image" is the same one I
reported on a daily build of Lubuntu 18.04 back in February under Bug #1747329,
with two important differences: a) in that case but not this one, the
installation proceeded fine after pressing tab then typing "live", and b) as
noted on that bug report, that error message is no longer apparent as of
Lubuntu 18.04 beta 2.

2) The machine I tried this install on is a 2005-era Dell Latitude D610
laptop, 1GB RAM, and I've successfully installed several *buntus on this
machine before, including 18.04 daily builds & betas for Lubuntu and
Ubuntu Budgie. I haven't been able to run apport on under Xubuntu
(obviously), but have attached apport logs to this ticket taken from
that machine during earlier bug reports.

Thanks,
Ken.

[Bug 1754907] Re: Chromium address bar flickers and renders oddly

2018-03-17 Thread Ken T
Hi Olivier,

sorry for my slow reply - am writing from another machine at present.
Will post the results of that test in the next day or so, but in the
meantime stopped by to report the following:

The other day I spent an hour in Chromium on the laptop on which I'd
reported this issue, and for reasons I'm not sure of, the screen didn't
flicker! Will do some more testing and report back.

Ta,
K.

[Bug 1754907] Re: Chromium address bar flickers and renders oddly

2018-03-13 Thread Ken T
I've just installed the snap, and got the following confirmation:
   :~$ snap install chromium
   chromium 64.0.3282.167 from 'canonical' installed

...and yes, the flickering is evident there as well.

[Bug 1754907] Re: Chromium address bar flickers and renders oddly

2018-03-13 Thread Ken T
Hi Olivier,
To answer the first of your three questions (I'll answer the other ones
separately), I'm using an old Dell laptop which probably has no discrete
graphics card, with the standard driver - i.e. no additional / proprietary
driver. Here's what my terminal says - I'm pretty sure that the several
references to "915GM" point to an integrated graphics setup.

[Bug 1754833] Re: Chromium complains that it's not the default browser when it is the default according to Gnome Settings

2018-03-13 Thread Ken T
Hi Olivier,
No, I hadn't tried to install chromium at all - I merely used the one version
of chromium which came bundled with Budgie.

The output of that command was:
firefox.desktop
...which is interesting, given that by default, chromium is the only browser
installed in Budgie - at least in the daily builds.

Thanks,
Ken.

Please note that another Ubuntu Budgie user has noticed this issue also

Further, this bug is possibly related to Bug #1726453.

[Bug 1754819] Re: Using Gnome Settings' search tool works for some but not all items located under top-level menu categories

2018-03-13 Thread Ken T
Jeremy, it seems that this issue has already been reported upstream, but the
issue has been closed and I don't yet know how to reopen it:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-center/issues/1

I'd edit the desktop.in.in files directly myself, but am a newcomer to
the process for doing so. Any pointers to how-to's, etc?

Also, on the issue of Gnome having two upstream bugtrackers, I note that
according to the following link:
https://wiki.gnome.org/Initiatives/DevelopmentInfrastructure/
... they say that their plan is "Shortly after the new solution (Gitlab) is
setup, disable issue reporting in Bugzilla (as well as new accounts,
milestones, etc)."
So I guess we can just use Gitlab for issues going forward.

Thanks,
Ken.

[Bug 1754819] Re: Using Gnome Settings' search tool works for some but not all items located under top-level menu categories

2018-03-13 Thread Ken T
Jeremy, Daniel,

Thanks for your replies. As per Daniel's suggestion, I've run apport, &
have updated the bug title and description.

I'll also lodge a bug report upstream as Jeremy suggests, and report
back with a bug number.

Jeremy, you've suggested that there are potentially multiple bugs here -
I'm not sure I agree with this. I hope that by amending the bug
description that I've summed up the over-arching issue, and that filing
a bug report for each instance of the issue wouldn't be necessary.
Please let me know your thoughts on this.

With this in mind, I disagree with Daniel's assertion that the main
issue in this bug report has already been fixed.

Thanks,
Ken.

[Bug 1754819] Re: Using Gnome Settings' search tool works for some but not all items located under top-level menu categories

2018-03-13 Thread Ken T
** Description changed:

(As seen in the latest daily build of 32bit Ubuntu Budgie)

- See attached screenshot. Searching within settings is currently not very
- useful / intuitive, as it only finds results at the level of top-level
- menu entries / categories, but not the items within them.
+ See attached screenshot. Searching within settings is currently not as
+ useful / intuitive as it could be, as it finds results for some items
+ located within the top-level menu entries / categories, but not all
+ items.

- As an example, searching for "uni" brings up Universal Access, but the
- same search tool produces nothing when searching for items within the
- Universal Access category (e.g. "contrast", "screen", "cursor", etc).
+ Being able to find all menu sub-items from the search tool without having to
pore through individual menus is the ideal outcome, and is my intention in
raising this bug report - the individual examples below are merely instances of
this broader pattern. Please note that these examples seem to be changing
rapidly, as overnight updates have made some search terms return valid results
when only a few days ago they didn't.
+
+ Examples of search terms that don't work / work fully:
+ - cursor (no items found; should return "Universal Access")
+ - high (ditto)
+ - sound (only returns the "sound" menu; should also return "Universal Access"
+ - sharing (brings up some valid results, but not "Notifications" which
includes the item "desktop sharing".
+ - desktop (ditto)
+
+
+ Examples of search terms which do work properly:
+ - contrast
+ - screen
+ - size
+

  Thanks,
  Ken.

[Bug 1754918] Re: Budgie / Gnome file manager "unable to access" a USB stick that works fine under Linux Mint LTS

2018-03-10 Thread Ken T
I've just tried to plug in 3 known-working USB sticks into this UB daily
build, with content on the USB sticks that I access from other *buntu
machines, and with each stick I got the same result - "unable to access
 - read-only file system".

So that's a pretty significant bug, I'd say.

[Bug 1754819] Re: Searching within Gnome Settings only works for top-level menu entries

2018-03-10 Thread Ken T
This issue has been partially improved in the overnight update, but
inconsistently.

As some examples of the broader pattern I'm talking about here, searching for:
- "screen" now brings up a plausible list of options, including screenshot,
universal access, displays, etc.

- "contrast" brings up Universal Access. All good.

- "cursor" brings up no result, despite also being an option under Universal
Access.
- "sharing" brings up "sharing - control what you want to share with others",
but does not bring up "desktop sharing".
- "banner" brings up no result, even though "banner designer" is an option
under Notifications > Applications.

The same thing happened to me today, using yesterday's daily build of
Ubuntu Budgie 18.04 (32bit) with all updates applied, using Gnome
Software v3.27.92.

[Bug 1754827] [NEW] Gnome settings - color: No ability to add new color profile via GUI

2018-03-10 Thread Ken T
Public bug reported:

(As seen in the latest daily build of 32bit Ubuntu Budgie 18.04)

The "Color" page within Settings has a "Learn More" link, which points
to the Ubuntu Desktop Guide. Within this, I found a page called "How do
I test if color management is working correctly?", which suggests that
it's possible to click on a button called "Add profile" to enable a test
colour profile (and presumably other profiles also).

The current development version of Gnome, as seen in the latest daily
build of Ubuntu Budgie 32bit, has no such button visible within Settings
> Color. See screenshot.

Thanks,
Ken.

[Bug 1754823] [NEW] Gnome Settings is inconsistent with how it respects spelling differences due to locale

2018-03-10 Thread Ken T
Public bug reported:

(As seen in the latest daily build of 32bit Ubuntu Budgie)

See attached screenshot, which shows a couple of examples of this issue:

1) different spellings of the same word within the one screen ("color" and
"colour").
2) spellings of words according to British English ("Behaviour") and American
English ("maximized").

Ideally, all text strings would respect the locale / language settings
selected upon installation (in my case, British English / Australian
locale). This would apply to words such as (color/colour, words ending
in ized/ised, and any other words which are spelt/spelled differently
between British and American English).

Thanks,
Ken.

[Bug 1754819] [NEW] Searching within Gnome Settings only works for top-level menu entries

2018-03-10 Thread Ken T
Public bug reported:

(As seen in the latest daily build of 32bit Ubuntu Budgie)

See attached screenshot. Searching within settings is currently not very
useful / intuitive, as it only finds results at the level of top-level
menu entries / categories, but not the items within them.

As an example, searching for "uni" brings up Universal Access, but the
same search tool produces nothing when searching for items within the
Universal Access category (e.g. "contrast", "screen", "cursor", etc).

Ken.

[Bug 1754816] [NEW] Gnome: Under "universal access", trying to turn screen keyboard on doesn't do anything

2018-03-09 Thread Ken T
Public bug reported:

(As seen in the latest daily build of 32bit Ubuntu Budgie)

Under "universal access", various features work as expected (e.g turning
on high contrast, or large text). However, pressing the toggle button
for the on-screen keyboard has no effect.

Please note that another Ubuntu Budgie user has noticed this issue also
- see comment #5 from Bug #1687900, dated 6th October 2017.

Further, this bug is possibly related to Bug #1726453.

[Bug 1754813] [NEW] Software: searching for programs / packages doesn't work

(As seen in Software v3.27.92, as present in the latest daily build of

[Bug 1754812] [NEW] Software: default categories displaying very few entries

2018-03-09 Thread Ken T
Public bug reported:

(As seen in Software v3.27.92, as present in the latest daily build of
32bit Ubuntu Budgie for 18.04).

With "All" selected by default at the top of the screen, clicking on any
of the buttons for software categories (productivity, communication &
news, etc) reveals only a handful of entries, when there are usually
truckloads of them. See attached screenshot as an example.

However, clicking on "Installed" software shows 53 entries, so at least
that seems to be working OK.

Ken.

[Bug 1748115] Re: In Budgie Welcome / Getting Started, single-click install of web browsers fails without helpful notification

2018-02-23 Thread Ken T
Thinking more broadly, I'd suggest that this bug highlights an
overarching concept...

In terms of user-friendliness as a key design principle, it'd be a good
idea that wherever possible, any given error message does as many of the
following as is viable in that specific situation:

1) At a minimum, explain what caused the fault. As one way to illustrate
this concept, it's not enough for an image viewer to say 'cannot open
file' when trying to open an image file. Ideally it should say WHY it
cannot perform the desired task - e.g. 'file type <.XYZ> not supported',
'file size exceeds ', or whatever.

2) Suggest one or more troubleshooting steps in plain language, or some
form of alternative / workaround. Where needed, this may involve linking
to a URL for more info.

3) Enable a one-click automated error report / crash report, possibly
with the option for the user to add explanatory comments, to be sent to
the devs so as to better diagnose the cause of the fault, and to fix the
issue for everybody affected.

I'd point to both Firefox and Chrome, and particularly Firefox, as good
exemplars of the above principles. See for example the dialogue boxes which
appear when the browser hangs or crashes, or when you try to connect to URL
while offline.

Thanks,
Ken.
