2020-05-17 Thread Jonathan Lam
Update: performing the format worked for me (removing the read
protection removed the blk_update_request errors on Ubuntu). I'm not
particularly concerned about encryption, so I'll probably leave it off,
but maybe in your case you need some additional packages on Ubuntu to
support the self-encryption.

2020-05-16 Thread Jonathan Lam
Hi Timo and Rafael,

I'm not a sysadmin, but just a hobbyist who ordered a used SAS Hitachi
hus723030als641. I'm experiencing the same thing (`blk_update_request:
protection error` and `blk_update_request: i/o error` on Archlinux and
Ubuntu). Also, in Windows 10, I am able to view the drive, but have
trouble formatting it.

Does this have anything to do with the read protection on the SAS drive?
I was searching around and found the `sg_format` command. Running
`sg_format /dev/sdX` reports that the drive has read protection on. I'm
not entirely sure what that means, but I'm currently trying to format
the drives with `sg_format /dev/sdX --format` (which, if I understood
the manpages correctly, I believe will unset the protection bit). Will
let you know in a few hours when it completes. In the meantime, do you
know anything about whether this SCSI protection level business is
related to the error at hand? I don't understand it very well and I
can't seem to find much useful information on it on the web, so any
input would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jonathan

We should not change RELEASE_ALERT_WITH_MESSAGE() to unconditionally
print its message. That message is only meant to be used in debug
builds. But if you really want a message in a release build, you can
always check the condition first and print your message before doing the
RELEASE_ASSERT. I do not recommend doing this in the general case (for
performance reasons), but in your implementation here, it’ll only be
executed once. So checking and printing that error message won’t hurt
much.

One way around this is to disable this mitigation for those platforms
that cannot be statically configured: basically, on those platforms, at
runtime, check if page size is within acceptable limits (and whatever
other criteria you need), and if not, disable the mitigation and don’t
do the page freeze.

On platforms that can guarantee their page sizes, this option to disable
the mitigation should be #if’d out.

[Bug 1551972] [NEW] Installation fails, booted live CD from PXE

2016-03-01 Thread Rodolfo Alexis Lam Figueroa
Public bug reported:

Version: Ubuntu 15.10 Release 15.10

Ubiquity Version: 2.21.37

Lubuntu Live iso booted from network in PXE mode using Serva application

Desktop loaded successfully and system works as normal.

Install started from built-in GUI installer. Threw an error about unable
to verify CD-ROM signatures or something like that. Possible cause might
be no CDROM is used at all. System is running from RAM.

Make commitSize at least as big as the page size

View in context:
https://bugs.webkit.org/attachment.cgi?id=266795&action=review

commitSIze is only needed when "#if !ENABLE(JIT)". Let's put it in the
appropriate sections.

> Source/JavaScriptCore/interpreter/JSStack.cpp:46
>  static StaticLock stackStatisticsMutex;
>  #endif // !ENABLE(JIT)
>
> +static size_t commitSize;

Move the commitSize declaration just below committedBytesCount above.

> Source/JavaScriptCore/interpreter/JSStack.cpp:58
> +commitSize = std::max(16 * 1024, getpagesize());
> +
>  #if !ENABLE(JIT)

Move this initialization below the #if !ENABLE(JIT).

Also, it may not matter much but the commitSize value should only be set
once, not every time we construct a new JSStack. Perhaps it would be
better to have static function and use that instead wherever you use
commitSize currently in JSStack.cpp:

static size_t commitSize()
{
static size_t size = 0;
if (!size)
size = std::max(16 * 1024, getpagesize());
return size;
}

This is affecting us too. Moving from 1.4.24-2 to 1.4.24-2ubuntu0.1

[Bug 1318934] Re: F9 shortcut doesn't work after pressed in builtin terminal

2015-01-27 Thread Adrian Lam
I am still experiencing this bug in Ubuntu 14.04 Geany version 1.23.1
Note that the embedded terminal is the one within Geany in the Message Window
(can be activated by View -> Show Message Window). There are some tabs in the
Message Window, e.g. Status, Compiler, Messages, Scribble, Terminal. I am
referring to this Terminal.
Also note that the embedded terminal will only be visible if the package
libvte9 is installed. So perhaps the bug is within libvte9 instead?

[Bug 1311316] Re: After locking screen there is no input field to type password for unlock

2014-09-03 Thread Benton Lam
Happens for me on Lenovo T420 frequently. At work, I hook it up to the
second monitor.

Yesterday I rebooted, it came up in dual monitor mode, and it was fine
all day, including closing the lid, and the password box is there. At
the EOD, I close the lid, unplug the monitor. Came back in, plug it back
in, initial log in is ok. And then when the screen times out, both
screens doesn't have the password dialog.

End up doing a unity --replace on VT1

[Bug 1318934] [NEW] F9 shortcut doesn't work after pressed in builtin terminal

2014-05-13 Thread Adrian Lam
Public bug reported:

Package: /usr/bin/geany
Ubuntu release: Ubuntu 12.04.4 LTS
Affected Geany versions: 1.23+dfsg-1~hyper1+precise (from ppa),
0.21.dfsg-1ubuntu4 (from Ubuntu repository)

Details:
If anyone of the shortcuts F5 (execute), F8 (compile), F9 (build), Shift+F9
(make) and Ctrl+Shift+F9 (make custom target) is pressed in the embedded
terminal, then even after switching the focus back to the main editor, these 5
shortcuts still do not work.

Expected to happen: The sourcecode being executed, compiled, built or made
What happened instead: Nothing

Remapping these keys to other shortcuts does not work, but the buttons
and the options from the Build menu work fine. Other shortcuts also
work, including F1, F2, F4, F6, Ctrl+C etc.

This can be "fixed" by unchecking the "Override Geany keybindings"
option in Edit -> Preferences -> Terminal, but this will disable all
shortcuts for the terminal (e.g. Ctrl+C for SIGINT).

Steps to reproduce:
1. Create an empty file with .c extension
2. Press F9 (works, brings you to the Compiler tab)
3. Go to the embedded terminal and press F9 (the ~ character should appear)
4. Switch focus back to the main editor and press F9 (nothing happens)

This has been reported to Geany
https://sourceforge.net/p/geany/bugs/1032/ but they say this is a Unity
bug that they won't fix. I hope this is the right place to report this,
if not please let me know.

2014-04-27 Thread Leo Lam
I am running Lubuntu 14.04 on my PowerBookG4 (PowerBook 3.5) and I am
having this problem too.

I have already followed the advices in PowerPCFAQ
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCFAQ#Why_do_I_have_no_sound.3F) to
configure the /etc/modules and /etc/modprobe.d but it cannot solve the
sound problem.

I am going to give up 14.04 and install 12.04 to have a try!!

[Bug 1275053] [NEW] Network Manager should not offer to create a hotspot if the interface isn't ap capable

   resources: irq:46 memory:f240-f2401fff

When opening network > wired, click at Use as Hotpsot, it would show the
hotspot's AP name and password, but in about 30 seconds or so, it
disappears, and reconnect to any valid AP, with *NO* error messages at
all.

This is extremely confusing to users, and the app could do something

only offer it if it is capable.

[Bug 1046820] [NEW] touch support seems broken since qt4-x11-4.8.1

2012-09-06 Thread Canmor Lam
Public bug reported:

I found that touch examples of QT (under /usr/lib/qt4/examples/touch/)
works well on Ubuntu 11.10(with qt4-x11-4.7.4) but not on Ubuntu
12.04(with qt4-x11-4.8.1). On Ubuntu 12.04, touch examples of QT such as
"dials", "fingerpaint", "knobs" and "pinchzoom" seems cannot get any
touch event.

Then I download the source code of qt4-x11 by 'apt-get source' and debug
it. I found that there may be a mistake in file
"debian/patches/kubuntu_28_xi2.1.patch". Look at the codes near line
714:

702 +QApplicationPrivate::TouchDeviceInfo tdi;
703 +
704 +for (int k = 0; k < devices[i].num_classes; ++k) {
705 +XIAnyClassInfo *xiclassinfo = devices[i].classes[k];
706 +if (xiclassinfo->type == XITouchClass) {
..
712 +} else if (xiclassinfo->type == XIValuatorClass) {
713 +XIValuatorClassInfo *v = (XIValuatorClassInfo
*)xiclassinfo;
714 +tdi.numValuators++;
..
728 +if (is_touch)
729 +touchDevices[devices[i].deviceid] = tdi;

Thease codes is the initialization of `touchDevices', note that `tdi' is
allocated from stack without any initialization, the initial value of
`tdi.numValuators' is uncertain. Its value is always a negative number on my
machine, even after couples of post increase(line 714).
Trouble comes when program reaches to function `QETWidget::translateXI2Event',
Look at the codes near line 563:

562 +double *values = dev->valuators.values;
563 +for (int i = 0; i < qMin(dev->valuators.mask_len * 8,
tdi.numValuators); ++i) {
..
617 +}

As I mentioned earlier, `tdi.numValuators' is always a negative number, program
*never* will enter this `for' loop. As a result, application cannot get any
touch properties except tracking ID. That is the trouble.
I add a initializint statement for `tdi.numValuators':

702 +QApplicationPrivate::TouchDeviceInfo tdi;
703 +tdi.numValuators = 0;

The problem is solved.

Finally, I try to figure out the different between qt4-x11-4.7.4 and
qt4-x11-4.8.1. Look this commit http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~kubuntu-
packagers/kubuntu-packaging/qt/revision/279 :

@@ -699,17 +682,20 @@

 +XITouchClassInfo *t = (XITouchClassInfo *)xiclassinfo;
-+QApplicationPrivate::TouchDeviceInfo& tdi =
touchDevices[devices[i].deviceid];
 +tdi.deviceid = devices[i].deviceid;
 +tdi.directTouch = t->mode == XIDirectTouch;
 +tdi.maxTouches = t->num_touches;
-+} else if (xiclassinfo->type == XITouchValuatorClass) {
-+XITouchValuatorClassInfo *v = (XITouchValuatorClassInfo
*)xiclassinfo;
-+QApplicationPrivate::TouchDeviceInfo &tdi =
touchDevices[devices[i].deviceid];
++} else if (xiclassinfo->type == XIValuatorClass) {
++XIValuatorClassInfo *v = (XIValuatorClassInfo
*)xiclassinfo;
 +tdi.numValuators++;
 +if (v->label == ATOM(XAbsMTTouchMajor))
 +copy(tdi.xivTouchMajor, *v);

In the older version, `tdi' is create by `QHash::operator[]' implicitly,
which is allocated from heap directly, memory in heep may be clear than
stack I think. Anyway, adding a default constructor for struct
TouchDeviceInfo should be a beter solution.

Problem Reproduce Video (<1min): http://www.sendspace.com/file/wkt5n6
- Open some windows to check if spread window function works normally.
- Change some setting in ibus makes language panel shown.
- Click on launcher to check if spread window function works normally.

Expected result: It works normally as the video shown.
Happened instead: Nothing happened and I am bored to press Alt+Tab again.

[Bug 399974] Re: 'Keep Aligned' option always resets to 'true' after desktop reload

2012-05-04 Thread LaM
Actually I've seen that they did fix it at least on the >= 11.XX
distros, when unity, the new "interface" (if we can really call it that
way) has been released.

Sadly...looks like it's not for us...(i'm still on the 10.04 and 10.10)

Hope sit. will change...I do not want unity.

[Bug 989850] Re: nvidia driver causes console freeze

2012-05-01 Thread Michael Lam
I have a very similar issue with Nvidia driver as well. Mine is a 12.04
AMD64 machine.

The symptom is very similar. Everything worked fine until when I try to
logout (which I believe will go back to Framebuffer based lightdm) the
machine freezes.

Nouveau driver doesn't have the same problem and I think it is
blacklisted when you install the nvidia additional driver.

When I try to ping the machine, response coming up but with a extremely
high latency, which indicates that something is still running but is
using all CPU utilization.

I'm on a AMD fusion based machine with APU hence I reverted back to AMD
video. However would like to get Nvidia going as it offers way better
video decoding hardware.

[Bug 851553] Re: checkgmail does not login: Unable to find gmail_ik

2011-12-15 Thread Julian Lam
Contrary to Mikhail's post, the above posted patch does not work for me.

I am using the latest version as pulled from the sourceforge svn.

This error occurs:
patching file usr/local/bin/checkgmail
Hunk #1 FAILED at 920.
Hunk #2 FAILED at 936.
2 out of 2 hunks FAILED -- saving rejects to file usr/bin/checkgmail.rej

Upon investigation, I found that my install of checkgmail was in
/usr/bin/, but changing the patch file by hand to reflect this did not
work.

I then manually applied the patch, but this also did not work.

[Bug 840512] Re: Files missing from package linux-headers-3.0.0.9

2011-09-12 Thread Alex Lam S.L.
Bug still exists on linux-headers-3.0.0-10

It is observed that whenever the Ubiquity installer is out-of-date, i.e.
it bundles an earlier version of linux-headers than in the software
centre, I would have no problem building kernel modules simply by
installing:

  sudo apt-get install linux-headers-`uname -r`

Once Ubiquity is updated to the latest linux-headers, I will need to use
the workaround:

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-3.0.0-10
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-`uname -r`

[Bug 840512] [NEW] Files missing from package linux-headers-3.0.0.9

2011-09-03 Thread Alex Lam S.L.
Public bug reported:

After installing Ubuntu / Lubuntu 11.10 Beta 1 from Ubiquity /
Alternative methods, the following files are missing:

/usr/src/linux-headers-3.0.0.9/KBuild
/usr/src/linux-headers-3.0.0.9/KConfig
/usr/src/linux-headers-3.0.0.9/Makefile

Even though the linux-header* packages are installed. As a result, any
compilation of kernel module projects would fail.

The only workaround I have so far:

sudo apt-get remove linux-headers-3.0.0.9
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-`uname -r`

NB: this bug has appeared and disappeared momentarily around Alpha 3,
and has now come back to haunt us

[Bug 822533] Re: "Failed to fetch"file k3b install on ubuntu studio 11.04

2011-08-08 Thread Hai-Lam Bui
Try hitting reload in synaptic (upper left corner) or running

sudo apt-get update

in a terminal, then try it again.

Background information:

The package list on your system is outdated. Sometime since it was
updated the last time and when you tried to install k3b, a library k3b
needs was updated in Ubuntu, but your system does not yet know about it.
It still tries to fetch the old version, but old versions may be removed
from the Ubuntu servers in certain cases (such as this one).

[Bug 820247] [NEW] linux-headers broken after installation

2011-08-03 Thread Alex Lam S.L.
Public bug reported:

After installing recent daily builds of Lubuntu (25 Jul and 1 Aug), I
notice that "linux-headers-3.0.0-7" is marked as installed, yet there
are files missing:

/usr/src/linux-headers-3.0.0-7/Kbuild
/usr/src/linux-headers-3.0.0-7/Makefile
/usr/src/linux-headers-3.0.0-7/Kconfig

I discover this as a result of trying and failed to build some kernel
modules using CMake.

Workaround:

sudo apt-get remove linux-headers-3.0.0-7
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-`uname -r`

[Bug 784574] [NEW] gedit instance not used by nautilus when auto-started

2011-05-18 Thread Julian Lam
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

After upgrading to 11.04, I noticed that if gedit is present in the
"Startup Applications" list, the gedit instance that opens on login is
no longer used when a text file is opened from nautilus. I don't have
any details about SIMILAR use cases, since mine is kind of an edge case,
but here are the reproduction steps:

1. Using non-Unity GNOME...
2. Put gedit into the startup applications list (System -> Preferences ->
Startup Applications)
3. Put a nautilus sftp session into the startup applications list (path:
nautilus sftp://...) [This may or may not be necessary]
4. Reboot/Re-login
5. Gedit and Nautilus should open up. Using the Nautilus window, open a text
file (.php, in my case)

[Bug 661450] Re: Support for multiple monitors broken

2011-05-07 Thread Hoi Lam
I can confirm that this occurs to me using the "final" production
installation (11.04) as well. The secondary screen has black areas which
seems to be available to opened applications but I cannot see. Please
find five screenshots attached explaining what is wrong:

1. Setting both monitors to their native resolution results in black areas
which seems to be there but I cannot see (laptop: 1280 x 800; external monitor
1280 x 1024)
2. Setting my external monitor to the correct resolution (1280 x 1024) and the
laptop monitor to a slightly lower resolution (laptop: 1024 x 768) does not
solve the matter
3. Set both monitors up as 1024 x 768 (the highest resolution denominator
between the two screens) which seems to have made it work-able BUT the toolbar
animation is not redrawn correctly and you can see "ghost"
4. More animation errors.
5. Switching back to just using one monitor (the laptop) resulted in an area of
the monitor on the right not being accessible.

My set up is as follows:
Laptop Sony VAIO VGN-SZ60MN
Monitor Dell 19" (1280 1024)

All these worked in Ubuntu 10 and I have to say that being a newbie to
this I did not expect production release to be this buggy. This has
really dented my faith in Ubuntu and no doubt many other newbie as well.
This is such a shame as I was just building my confidence up in using
Linux instead of Windows.

I really hope that this will be given a high priority and fixed soon.

Many Thanks,
Hoi

[Bug 691446] [NEW] gforge user visible in gdm

2010-12-17 Thread Hai-Lam Bui
Public bug reported:

gforge user shows up in gdm, even though it has no home directory.
Still, it seems weird to me that it is listed at all.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Set login manager to gdm, let it show list of users (default in new Ubuntu
and Xubuntu installations)
2. Install a fusionforge package (e.g. fusionforge-minimal)
3. Reboot

gforge will be listed there.

This happened with the current natty package, 5.0.2-5.

[Bug 689865] Re: systemsettings breaks comments in config

2010-12-16 Thread Hai-Lam Bui
You have a point. What I wanted to tell you is where the root cause is,
and that you should assign this bug (or file the more general one) to
the correct package. Which might be, although I might be wrong,
"kde4libs".

In the end, though, this has to be brought up upstream.

This behavior of overwriting config files is not just found in
systemsettings, but the KConfig system itself, which systemsettings very
probably uses. KConfig is part of kdelibs.

[Bug 578400] Re: Opening QCad manual from within the program fails on Lucid

2010-11-17 Thread Carlos Lam
Hi Scott,

I am a Ubuntu beginner and I have experienced the same problem with the
"Help" function in QCad and looked for solutions everywhere, until I see
your post.

I installed the fix package from your ppa (glad that you also posted the
commands, otherwise I wouldn't know how to do it). Initially QCad still
couldn't find the qcaddoc.adp file and showed the same warning message.
But since I saw the qcaddoc.adp.gz file inside the html folder, I just
unzipped it and it solves the problem completely. I use 10.04 by the
way.

Thanks!

[Bug 654288] [NEW] Tooltip stays active during scrolling of contact list

2010-10-03 Thread Julian Lam
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

When hovering over a contact's name, a tooltip appears with more
information.

However, when scrolling, this tooltip stays open until the mouse moves
out of the tooltip-triggering area. The tooltip covers part of the
contact list, so content behind (which I am looking to see!) is hidden.

Expected behaviour: When scrolling, the tooltip should be inhibited, and
re-enabled once scrolling stops.

Alternate expected behaviour: The tooltip should not cover the contact
list at all, choosing a location left or right of the cursor.

[Bug 652198] [NEW] "Dead space" in multiple monitor configs are accessible by mouse

2010-09-30 Thread Julian Lam
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I have a dual-monitor setup with the following resolutions:
1: 1920x1080 (left)
2: 1600x900 (right)

Therefore, there are 180 pixels of so called "dead space" underneath the
second (right-hand) monitor, which is explicitly not viewable due to
physical constraints.

The expected behaviour is dealing with this dead space is to not let the
mouse enter at all, meaning icons/windows/etc will not become "trapped"
inside. However, ubuntu will let the mouse wander into the dead zone,
which, to the unknowing, is quite jarring, as the mouse will have
literally "disappeared".

[Bug 644431] [NEW] Side effects when right clicking on bottom scrollbar while dragging

2010-09-21 Thread Julian Lam
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

In a gedit document with a bottom scrollbar, with multiple tabs open,
unintended side effects occur.

WHILE dragging the bottom scrollbar, right-clicking will switch the
current document over to the tab which is directly over the mouse.

The mouse pointer is at the bottom of the window, nowhere near the tabs.

This is reproducible every time. Create a document and open another new
tab. Insert enough random characters to make the bottom scrollbar
appear.

Start dragging it, and when your mouse is underneath a different tab,
right-click while still holding onto the primary mouse button. The tab
will switch.

[Bug 619281] [NEW] Empathy does not show inactive users who are online

2010-08-17 Thread Julian Lam
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

Specifically, I am talking about the MSN accounts

Expected behaviour: Users who are idle or inactive should show up on the
Empathy contact list as online (or idle).

Encountered behaviour: Idle or inactive users are shown as offline.

Note: This is not to be confused with users marked as away, just idle
users.

This bug can be reproduced at will:
1. Log into MSN Messenger/Meebo, and find an inactive (but online!) user.
Remember his/her name.
2. Log into empathy, and note that that user is not listed as online, but
offline.

hi,

what kind of information should I supply for future reports? the fields are

If you have a formatted drop menu option of some sort, that can guide me then
you should be able to direct your questions to get the information you need.

Let me know if this is possible.

Re: [Bug 540696] Re: Laptop suspends when power cord unplugged

Hey LJ,

The power indicator is actually full, and the issue persists irregardless of
power level. It seems as though whatever the battery level, once the AV
adapter is plugged in or removed, the battery level shows 0% for a split
second, triggering the automatic suspend.
