I'd completely forgotten about that, sorry! If I had remembered, I would
have fixed it and not reported this bug.

[Bug 864270] Re: screensaver starts immediatly when on 'Never'

2011-10-01 Thread Lambros Lambrou
This is really irritating. As a workaround, I've removed the gnome-
screensaver package, in the hope that'll prevent the screensaver ever
kicking in.

My problem is, I want to play full-screen OpenGL games, possibly for
longer than 1 hour at a time :) I can't trust that the game will
inhibit the screen-saver, which is why I always disable it. This is
apparently not possible in Oneiric, due to this bug.

[Bug 533213] [NEW] closed Evolution: yelp crashed, signal 5 in _XError()

2010-03-06 Thread Lambros Lambrou
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

Can't quite remember exactly what I was doing, but it was something like this:
Opened Window preferences tool (System->Preferences->Windows)
Pressed Help
Browsed around a bit.
Opened Evolution ("Mail" from the new envelope drop-down thing in the panel)
Read and deleted an e-mail
Closed Evolution

I originally thought it was Evolution that had crashed, since the
reporting tool appeared as soon as Evolution closed.

I don't know if this is reproducible, or if it has the same cause as
many other similar bug-reports.

[Bug 273837] Re: USB mouse acceleration reset when plugged in

2009-04-03 Thread Lambros Lambrou
I'm using Jaunty now, and my xserver-xorg is at version 1:7.4~5ubuntu16.
Just to confirm: I am still no longer experiencing the original problem
I reported (mouse sensitivity reverting to an incorrect setting on USB
disconnect/reconnect).

However, I can reproduce Aseem's problem: if I run "xmodmap -e 'pointer
= 3 2 1' " to swap my mouse buttons, and then disconnect/reconnect the
USB mouse, I find that the pointer mapping is undone. So I concur with
MarniX's assessment - Aseem's problem should be raised as a separate bug
report.

I'm sorry to hear Musthafa is having similar problems to what I
originally reported. I'm afraid I can't offer any explanation (it works
fine for me now).

[Bug 273837] Re: USB mouse acceleration reset when plugged in

2008-11-29 Thread Lambros Lambrou
I'm pleased to report this problem is no longer affecting me. I have
absolutely no idea what update has fixed it, but it is nonetheless now
fixed for me! :-) I just confirmed it by setting my mouse sensitivity
really slow, unplugging it, then re-plugging it. X server correctly
kept the slow setting.

Many thanks,

Lambros

[Bug 273837] Re: USB mouse acceleration reset when plugged in

2008-10-10 Thread Lambros Lambrou
Steps I took to create this Xorg log file:

* Unplugged the USB mouse.
* Restarted the X Server with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace
* Logged on, and waited for things to settle down.
* Plugged the mouse back in.
* Wiggled the mouse to confirm it was too sensitive (it was! :-)
* Took a snapshot copy of my /var/log/Xorg.0.log, to attach here.

A bit more background info: my mouse is a wireless device, with a
separate USB "dongle" that clips onto the mouse. When the mouse is not
in use, I keep the dongle clipped onto the mouse, because that stops the
battery from draining. Usually, I log in using just the keyboard,
before unclipping the USB dongle and plugging it in to the PC. I think
this problem would affect anybody who owns a mouse with a similar
design, as well as people using a KVM switch or similar.

[Bug 269120] Re: compiz.real crashed with SIGSEGV in paintOutput()

2008-09-30 Thread Lambros Lambrou
I have this exact same bug in Intrepid and it's reproducible every time.
In my case, I don't use Compiz (Desktop Effects) on my regular account,
because it interferes with 3D gaming. But I have the proprietary nVidia
driver installed, so I assume that, when I start up the Guest session,
it defaults to switching on Desktop Effects and therefore starts compiz.

>From the Alt-F2 screen, I can run gnome-terminal. Doing "killall
gnome-panel" gives me the panels back. And "killall nautilus" restores
the ability to get a right-click menu on the desktop.

[Bug 273837] [NEW] USB mouse acceleration reset when plugged in

2008-09-23 Thread Lambros Lambrou
Public bug reported:

Description:

When the X Server starts up and the login screen is shown, the initial
sensitivity of my USB mouse (acceleration and/or threshold) is very high
(the mouse pointer moves a long way with small movements of the mouse).
After I log in, the mouse sensitivity usually, but not always, gets
automatically adjusted to my preferred setting. One problem I'm having
is: this adjustment sometimes doesn't seem to happen. I often have to
run the Mouse configuration applet, move one of the sliders and move it
back, to correct the problem. The second problem (which seems closely
related, and perhaps causes the first problem) is: if I unplug the USB
mouse and plug it back in, the sensitivity goes back to being very high
again, as it was on the Login screen. This second problem reproduces
reliably.

Steps to reproduce (second problem):

On the login screen, mentally note the mouse's sensitivity (roughly).
Log on, then run the Mouse applet and set the sensitivity to be very different
from what it was on the logon screen (that is, slide the "Acceleration" slider
all the way to the left or right, whichever is most noticeably different from
the Logon screen behaviour).
Unplug, then reconnect the USB mouse. Move the mouse around to get a feel for
the sensitivity.

Observed behaviour:

The mouse sensitivity reverts back to what it was on the Logon screen.

Expected behaviour:

The mouse sensitivity should be set according to the Acceleration slider
position, and should feel the same as just before the mouse was
unplugged.

Notes:

The "xset q" mouse acceleration/threshold values do not change whilst I
unplug and replug the mouse. For example, if I move the sliders all the
way to the left, my mouse is very slow (as I'd expect) and the "xset q"
values are "acceleration: 3/10threshold: 1". When I unplug and
reconnect the mouse, the observed sensitivity changes to being very
high, but the "xset q" output remains the same. If I then enter "xset m
3/10 1" (the exact same numbers as in the current "xset q" output), the
mouse becomes very slow again.

System affected:

I'm using Ubuntu Intrepid (64 bit version), updated only a few days ago.
xserver-xorg-core is version 2:1.5.0-1ubuntu1. Machine is Dell Inspiron
1720 laptop, with nVidia graphics and proprietary "nvidia" driver in
use. I will try re-testing with "nv" driver. USB mouse is Logitech
wireless, "lsusb" output shows it as "046d:c50e Logitech, Inc. MX-1000
Cordless Mouse Receiver".

Interesting to know that getting rid of the "InputDevice" sections cures

[Bug 164942] ekiga crashes in tinyjpeg_idct_float, dell inspiron 1720

2007-11-25 Thread Lambros Lambrou
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ekiga

This is happening quite often for me: when I run Ekiga, it segfaults
during startup. This seemed to start happening after I tried to make a
video call to another Ekiga account, connected on the same LAN behind a
NAT router. This action caused Ekiga to crash, and I noticed that if I
restarted Ekiga shortly afterwards, it would crash on startup.

Prior to this crashing behaviour, I successfully made several test calls
to sip:[EMAIL PROTECTED] without incident. It was only after attempting to
call another Ekiga SIP account that this problem started happening.

Ubuntu version is 7.10, x86_64, freshly installed on a Dell Inspiron 1720
laptop.
Software is up-to-date as of Sat 24 Nov, with all repositories enabled
(including proposed-updates and backports).
Ekiga version is 2.0.11-1ubuntu1

In order to get sound working on this laptop, I installed
linux-backports-modules-generic.
In an attempt to fix webcam issues with Skype, I compiled and installed (from
latest svn trunk) the uvcvideo kernel module.
In order to get my webcam to work in Ekiga, I have to choose the "V4L2" video
plugin - the default "V4L" does not work at all on this system.

This problem appears to be very similar to Bug #128481, which is
reportedly fixed. I will attach more detailed info, including
backtraces which I got by following the instructions found here:

2007-04-18 Thread Lambros Lambrou
I did have libxine1-ffmpeg installed (1.1.4-2ubuntu3), but not
libxine1-plugins

So I've tried installing the latter, which has now added:
libxine1-console (1.1.4-2ubuntu3)
libxine1-gnome (1.1.4-2ubuntu3)
libxine1-kde (1.1.4-2ubuntu3)
libxine1-plugins (1.1.4-2ubuntu3)
to my system. But still no audio. And I'm having some crashes and lockups,
similar to Bill Hind, though I'm inclined to agree that's a separate bug.

usually I can't hear any audio, but the video looks OK. But if I play
the downloaded file with Totem, the movie plays just fine. I did my
testing after moving the .democracy folder out of the way, as requested
by Chris Halse Rogers. I have captured the stderr output of this
process, which gives us a clue: it doesn't know how to handle the audio
stream of type "audio/mpeg". Hope this is useful.

My version of democracyplayer is exactly the same as Chris's, and I'm
also using Ubuntu Feisty on AMD64.

All works fine for me now. Many thanks to Ben Collins and the rest of
the Kernel team - you've done a great job in somewhat difficult
circumstances! :-)

[Bug 96430] Re: MASTER: Request for new-legacy nvidia drivers (9631)

2007-03-26 Thread Lambros Lambrou
I'm afraid I've also been bitten by this "upgrade". I have a 3-year-old
GeForce4 Ti 4200 card, and I've just found out nVidia have dropped
support for this card in their latest drivers. After installing the
latest feisty updates, the X server would not start.

In the Xorg log file, there was a message hinting that I needed to
install the legacy drivers. So I did "sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-
legacy" and rebooted. That gave me a working X server. But I then
found that 3D-accelerated apps would not run (some problem with finding
GLX visuals). After looking through the logs and doing some online
research, I found a solution: I added this line to the "Device" section
of my /etc/X11/xorg.conf :

Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "true"

Hope this information is helpful to somebody.

[Bug 93378] Cannot cancel downloading the list of artwork/themes

2007-03-18 Thread Lambros Lambrou
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-art

To reproduce:
  Run gnome-art
From the "Art" menu, choose Backgrounds->GNOME
Observed:
A lengthy download is automatically begun, and a progress dialogue is shown
("Downloading background 1/1078"). There is no Cancel or Abort button on this
dialogue, and there are no window-decorations either.
Expected:
Should be a method of aborting the download. Any progress-window should
appear with usual window-decorations.

I don't know whether this is by design - the missing window-decorations
makes it look like something is wrong. The application is effectively
"hung" when it is in this state, since there is no way to cancel the
download, which could take a long time (several minutes, even on my
broadband connection).

Another problem is: the download is begun even if I have successfully
downloaded the items previously. I can't just run gnome-app and view
the thumbnails that are already there. It insists on re-downloading
them every single time. I guess this is a separate issue, but it
wouldn't be a problem if I could quickly cancel the download and view
the thumbnails already there.

I'm using Ubuntu 7.04 on AMD64, gnome-art 0.2-5

[Bug 89031] Re: List views start with too-narrow name column

2007-03-09 Thread Lambros Lambrou
Ouch! I see what you mean, looking at that screenshot. I didn't notice
this problem with default new-user settings, but I think that's because
I'm using a fairly-high display resolution: 1152x864. Looks to me like
that screenshot was taken using a lower resolution setting (assuming
Nautilus chooses a fixed percentage of the display for the initial
window-size). If my theory is right, people with low-res displays will
be worst affected by this bug.

[Bug 89031] Re: List views start with too-narrow name column

2007-03-07 Thread Lambros Lambrou
It seems this bug is not apparent when default settings are used (such
as when creating a new "test" user). But if I log on as the new user,
and set the List View to show more columns, the bug appears.

A workaround, for now, is to:

Open the Nautilus file browser.
Go to Edit -> Preferences
Click on the "List Columns" tab
Untick all boxes, except for the top four - these are ticked by default for a
new user.

I find that the problem only occurs if I have too many columns enabled
for viewing. I think Nautilus is supposed to show all the selected
columns, and display a horizontal scrollbar when they are all too wide
to fit into the window. Instead, Nautilus is shrinking the "Name"
column to take up the slack. Nautilus is not enforcing a minimum-width
for this column.

And I concur with Mike Gratton - this problem has only surfaced in the
latest version of Feisty. I've been using Ubuntu since it began with
Warty, and have never seen this problem before until now.

Hope this is helpful.

[Bug 89031] Re: List views start with too-narrow name column

2007-03-07 Thread Lambros Lambrou
I was just about to report this as a bug, too! If I size my Name column
properly, and browse some other folders in the same window, it remembers
the width I set. But if I select "View as Icons", and then switch back
to "View as List", it forgets the width!

I tried creating a new "test" user account, and switching to it. The
problem does not seem to occur for this new user. So it looks like my
own user-settings have somehow got into a corrupt state.
