[Bug 2081997] [NEW] sudo apt install texlive-fonts-extra never finishes

2024-09-25 Thread Linda
Public bug reported:

I ran

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
sudo apt install texlive-fonts-extra

the last lines in /var/log/apt/term.log were

Selecting previously unselected package texlive-fonts-extra.
Preparing to unpack .../52-texlive-fonts-extra_2017.20180305-2_all.deb ...
Unpacking texlive-fonts-extra (2017.20180305-2) ...

The terminal sat at this line, stuck at install 51% for almost an hour.
In another terminal I could see from "df" that a disk size was
increasing, although I didn't know how to find where the install was
putting the files. Finally, I just left it run all night.

The next morning (16 hours later) the terminal was still at 51%.
Nothing had changed. It had hung.

I opened another terminal window and saw some processes (I think the apt
install) in ps -aux, and I tried kill -9 on all of them, but one of them
(maybe the apt install) would not die. This is on WSL, Ubuntu on
Windows, Ubuntu 18.04.6 LTS. I don't think the original terminal window
was responsive at this point - I couldn't close it. So I shutdown
Windows, from the regular Windows shutdown menu, and the machine
stopped. After a half a minute I rebooted.

Then I did

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

and it said something like it was going to upgrade two things. I was
wondering if it would be corrupted or show packages that needed to be
cleaned up or purged, but weirdly, it seemed like it cleaned itself up
and recovered on its own. Then there were a lot of lines that seemed to
be a continuation of the texlive-fonts-extra install, like

Setting up libjs-jquery (3.2.1-1) ...
Setting up texlive-latex-recommended (2017.20180305-1) ...
Setting up texlive-fonts-extra (2017.20180305-2) ...
Setting up fonts-gfs-neohellenic (1.1-6) ...
...
Processing triggers for ...
Running mktexlsr
Running updmap-sys
Running mktexlsr /var/lib/texmf ...
Processing triggers ...
Log ended

Then I ran pdflatex, because this whole thing started when it couldn't
find an .sty file, and now it works. Strange. It shouldn't be this
time-consuming. I'm not sure what happened.

[Bug 1916364] [NEW] gnome-control-center won't install in Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS

2021-02-20 Thread Linda
Public bug reported:

I wanted to possibly change my sleep and suspend settings, but I could
find no Settings, or Control Panel, or any type of basic system
settings. I saw Tweaks and suggestions to install new apps about Power
& Battery, etc, but isn't there supposed to be some sort of main system
settings? Every other computer, other Linux flavors, and previous
incarnations of Ubuntu had a settings console.

Also, in the top right if I click on the drop down arrow, then the right
arrow beside "Fully Charged", then "Power Settings", nothing happens.
Similarly, if I click on the right arrow beside "On", then "Bluetooth
Settings", nothing happens.

[Bug 1871456] Re: Files on desktop don't use custom icon

2020-12-31 Thread Linda
When I upgraded from Ubuntu 18.04 to 20.04, this happened.

Before upgrading I had one file on the desktop with a custom icon.
After upgrading, the custom icon was no longer showing, and it showed a
general-looking text file icon. When I right-clicked and opened its
"Properties", it showed the icon, and if I clicked on the icon,
navigated to the icon file, and clicked "open", nothing changed.

I went to Dash -> Tweaks (gnome-tweaks) and toggled the Extensions ->
Desktop Icons to on, and I rebooted.

The custom icon still does not show on the desktop. After the reboot, I
again right-clicked on the file, went to "Properties", and reassociated
the file with its custom icon. But still, it doesn't show the icon on
the desktop. As the original poster of this bug mentioned, it's
possible to get the icon to show in the file browser.

2020-04-20 Thread Linda
A thing noticeable about the diff of the working and broken internal
microphone is that the one that's not working shows the processes that
are accessing the sound card (pacmd list-clients) includes libcanberra.

The other thing I wondered about is that in the broken one, the IRQ pin
numbers reported by "cat /proc/asound/cards" and "lspci -vvv | grep -A9

cat /proc/asound/cards

I don't know if this has anything to do with why this internal mic stops
working. I wonder what is calling libcanberra.

[Bug 1840725] Re: Microphone not working in Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS on new hp-spectre-x360-convertible-15 laptop

2020-04-19 Thread Linda
Sorry to post so much - I wish I could consolidate or edit all these
posts. The next day I came back and it didn't work in Zoom. I tried a
bunch of things listed on the following web page, starting with simplest
first, from

https://support.system76.com/articles/audio/

until finally I did

sudo apt install --reinstall alsa-base alsa-utils pulseaudio linux-
sound-base libasound2

then I rebooted and

sudo alsa force-reload

and it worked. Which is weird, I think, because I just did this
reinstall of these modules 3 days ago. I don't think the versions of
these modules changed. I don't know what's going on. My guess is that
it breaks because something changes a configuration file. And then I
guess it's fixed when the configuration file is re-initialized by re-
installing these modules. I wish I could pinpoint it.

[Bug 1840725] Re: Microphone not working in Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS on new hp-spectre-x360-convertible-15 laptop

2020-04-16 Thread Linda
The internal microphone is not working for
System76 Gazelle gazp9 which is a Clevo laptop under the hood.
Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS bionic

I think I did a Zoom interview a few years ago, and it worked, but the
microphone hasn't worked for the last few months.

This is an old laptop with two input jacks, one for microphone, and one
for head phones. My headphones have a combo mike in the cord. Maybe if
I had a separate microphone, it would work. Or if I had a splitter.

But when nothing is plugged into the mike jack, the internal microphone
does not work. The input settings have an orange bar that is supposed
to oscillate if it picks up sound, but nothing is shown on that when I
speak. If I put my combo cable in that jack, it briefly oscillates, but
that's like a fluke. Something is live there - maybe the device is
recognized - but it's not working.

[Bug 1777070] Re: firefox plugin libwidevinecdm.so crashes due to apparmor denial

2019-09-07 Thread Linda
Yes, this fixed it for me, too, but I couldn't get it to work, just on
the explanation above. Here's a little more detail. Follow the
instructions at:

https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=295649#p1644426

Worked on Firefox Quantum 69.0 (64-bit) on Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS bionic.

Now I can watch the Great Courses and other movies on Kanopy for free
through my local library account. Yay! Only 6 hours after my first
attempt, LOL.

[Bug 1798999] Re: firefox windows are black in Ubuntu 18.10

2019-01-24 Thread Linda
Similar thing happened to me in Ubuntu 18.04. Today is the first day of
my installation of 18.04. At first Firefox worked fine. Then I was
tweaking a few things after the system upgrade to 18.04, and added the
date to the top menu bar / task bar by typing "sudo gsettings set
org.gnome.desktop.interface clock-show-date true" in the terminal window
at the bash prompt. It didn't show the date, so I rebooted, and then it
showed the date. Then I clicked on Firefox. And it was not a black
screen, not a white screen, but a clear screen. That is, a transparent
screen.

"sudo apparmor_parser -R /etc/apparmor.d/usr.bin.firefox" fixed it for
me.

Thank you Olivier Tilloy (osomon) !

I have edited /etc/apparmor.d/usr.bin.firefox in the past when Firefox
gave a black screen, after updating to Firefox version 51.0.1 two years
ago. What fixed it the black screen then is described here:

  https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1334748#c7

but now my copy of usr.bin.firefox is the same as usr.bin.firefox.dpkg-
dist

which I think means it's the same as the current distribution file,
although I'm not sure, so I don't know what's going on or why this
happened.

Re: [Bug 1380419] Re: scanner recognized but says sane_start: Invalid argument

2016-09-04 Thread Linda
Hi Christopher,

I don't remember what this was about - probably at first my Brother printer
did not work with Ubuntu. But a year ago or so, Brother updated their
scanner drivers, and that fixed it.

Best,

Linda

[Bug 1003950] Re: launcher does not show minimized update manager while clicked

2014-11-14 Thread Linda
I haven't experienced this bug in a while, but the only similarity in my
set up to Justin's is the multiple monitors. My setup was a laptop and
external monitor. I might have had them configured to show the dock on
both screens, but I've changed it to show only on the left, external
monitor screen.

Same here. I have both USB3 and USB2 on my computer, and connecting the
scanner to the USB2 port didn't fix it.

Re: [Bug 1380414] Re: sane_start: Invalid argument on Brother DCP-8155DN scanner

2014-10-12 Thread Linda
Hi Christopher,

Thank you for your email. I'm sorry, I'm afraid of messing up my
computer, which I use for work. My regrets.

If there is some way to put debug statements into some code for Ubuntu
14.04, and print the results, I would be glad to do that.

[Bug 478761] Re: failed to start scanner: Invalid argument

2014-10-12 Thread Linda
I have a problem getting "invalid argument" from a Brother DCP-8155DN
scanner that's working on Debian 7.6 (32-bit) but not Ubuntu 14.04
(64-bit). I tried changing from the USB 3.0 port to 2.0, but it didn't
help.

The main thing I want to say here is that on someone's post, not sure if
it's in this bug, they said maybe the problem had to do with the fact
that lsusb and scanimage gave different dev and bus numbers. So I tried
this on my computer where the scanner is working, where lsusb and
scanimage gave different dev and bus numbers, too, so that's not the
problem. For instance,

lsusb:

Bus 001 Device 005: ID 04f9:0293 Brother Industries, Ltd

scanimage -L:

device `brother4:bus4;dev1' is a Brother DCP-8155DN USB scanner

Even though the bus and device numbers are different, scanimage -T
starts up the scanner, and gscan2pdf works fine, produces a nice image.
Also sane-find-scanner finds it:

found USB scanner (vendor=0x04f9, product=0x0293) at libusb:001:005

[Bug 1380419] [NEW] scanner recognized but says sane_start: Invalid argument

2014-10-12 Thread Linda
Public bug reported:

I'm not really sure which package this problem is in.This report is
from "ubuntu-bug sane".

I tried "ubuntu-bug libsane" but it went to sane-backends.

linda@gazelle:~$ scanimage -L

device `brother4:bus2;dev1' is a Brother DCP-8155DN USB scanner

linda@gazelle:~$ scanimage -T

scanimage: rounded value of br-x from 215.9 to 215.88
scanimage: rounded value of br-y from 355.6 to 355.567
scanimage: sane_start: Invalid argument

I originally reported the bug here (comments of elindarie):

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1312594

and here

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1380414

where I also uploaded some gscan2pdf log and config files. Gscan2pdf
also gives "invalid argument".

I installed the Brother drivers. The scanner is working with an older
Debian laptop (32-bit) but not a newer Ubuntu 14.04 (64-bit) laptop.

Added the following line to /lib/udev/rules.d/40-libsane.rules:

ATTRS{idVendor}=="04f9", ATTRS{idProduct}=="0293",
ENV{libsane_matched}="yes"

If someone could tell me what more debugging to do - where to put print
statements into a driver and recompile it into a development location
for testing, I would gladly compare its output to that from the working
Debian laptop.

Thank you.

[Bug 1380414] [NEW] sane_start: Invalid argument on Brother DCP-8155DN scanner

2014-10-12 Thread Linda
Public bug reported:

Not sure which package this is in.

Originally described in my (elindarie) comments at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1312594 (sane-backends).

But when I tried reporting it as "ubuntu-bug sane-backends" it said
something like "that package isn't installed".

So I'm trying to find what package the bug is in.

The scanner works with an older Debian laptop, but not the newer Ubuntu
14.04 64-bit laptop.

Output of scanimage -L:

device `brother4:bus2;dev1' is a Brother DCP-8155DN USB scanner

Output of scanimage -T:

scanimage: rounded value of br-x from 215.9 to 215.88
scanimage: rounded value of br-y from 355.6 to 355.567
scanimage: sane_start: Invalid argument

gscan2pdf doesn't work either, gives "invalid argument".

The scanner is connected in the USB 2.0 port.

I added the following line to /lib/udev/rules.d/40-libsane.rules

ATTRS{idVendor}=="04f9", ATTRS{idProduct}=="0293",
ENV{libsane_matched}="yes"

Is there some way I can print out more debugging?

[Bug 1312594] Re: 04e8:3441 14.04 won't scan via Samsung SCX-3200 Multi-Function Printer

2014-10-12 Thread Linda
I would be happy to help debug this bug:

Can someone tell me how and where I can get and build the scanner
software (in a development folder on my computer - a folder other than
the regular system location) so I can run it and step through it on both
my Ubuntu (where the scanner is not working) and Debian (where the
scanner is working) machines, to compare the output?

Thank you.

Christopher, are you sure you want this reported as a cups bug? I have
a multifunction printer/scanner, and the printer functions are fine, as
far as I can tell -- my only problem is scanning.

see bug 1312594 for my initial report, then one of the maintainers (?),

just not the scanning.

[Bug 1312594] Re: 14.04 won't detect common USB scanner

2014-07-27 Thread Linda
I'm confused about what is the sane frontend or backend, or whether I
should download/install another frontend or backend, if there is one.
I'm not sure, but from the following, it seems like, on Ubuntu, that
"sane" is the frontend, and "sane-utils" is the backend (???) .

dpkg -l | grep -i sane

ii libcommon-sense-perl3.72-2build1amd64 module that implements
some sane defaults for Perl programs
ii libsane:amd64 1.0.23-3ubuntu3.1 amd64 API library for scanners
ii libsane-common 1.0.23-3ubuntu3.1 amd64 API library for
scanners -- documentation and support files
ii libsane-hpaio 3.14.3-0ubuntu3.2 amd64 HP SANE backend for
multi-function peripherals
ii libsane-perl0.05-2build1amd64 Perl bindings for the
SANE (Scanner Access Now Easy) Project
ii sane1.0.14-9amd64 scanner graphical
frontends
ii sane-utils 1.0.23-3ubuntu3.1 amd64 API library for
scanners -- utilities

Also, the SANE website, http://www.sane-project.org, says the latest
backend is 1.0.24, as of Sept. 30, 2013. The Ubuntu Software Center
seems to have version 1.0.23 for sane-utils . If that is the same as
the sane backend, maybe upgrading to 1.0.24 would fix this. Their web
site says the changes from 1.0.23 to 1.0.24 have some bug fixes and
improved USB support, etc.

I don't know if it's possible, but maybe it would be simpler if the
names of the sane-related files on ubuntu were the same as those at the
www.sane-project.org.

[Bug 1312594] Re: 14.04 won't detect common USB scanner

2014-07-24 Thread Linda
I'm having a similar problem. I have an old 32-bit Debian laptop on
which my scanner is working fine, and a new 64-bit Ubuntu 14.04 laptop
on which the scanner is not working. The scanner is connected via USB
cable. It is part of a Brother DCP-8155DN (multifunction black and
white laser printer, copier, and scanner). The copier is working, and
the printer part is working with CUPS just fine as far as I can tell.

The scanner seems to be detected, but then gscan2pdf and Simple Scan
give errors, and sane-find-scanner can not find it. Scanimage sees it
but cannot produce an output image.I tried these as root and not
root.

I have sane 1.0.14-9 and sane-utils 1.0.23-3. The kernel is Linux
version 3.13.0-32-generic.

[Bug 1122454] [NEW] conf.d file uses deprecated comment indicator

2013-02-11 Thread Linda Knapp
Public bug reported:

When php-mcrypt is installed on 10.04 the file
/etc/php5/conf.d/mcrypt.ini is installed which uses the deprecated '#'
comment indicator. This causes php to start throwing errors if your
logging is set accordingly.

It appears most if not all of the other php extension packages installed
use the appropriate ';' comment indicator for the conf.d files.

[Bug 651808] Re: gnome_swallow applet fails to swallow the i8kmon window

2012-11-11 Thread Mike Linda
Is this bug a duplicate of Bug #44255 (and possibly Bug #351103)?

In any case, I am having the exact same intermittent problem as reported
initially by Carsten Heidmann. Once in a while (maybe 1 out of 10 log-
ins) the swallower applet doesn't properly swallow i8kmon. I am on a
Dell Inspiron 4150 (2.2 GHz Pentium 4, 1 GB memory), using Ubuntu 10.04
(i386, fully updated with the latest patches).

When I import MDP, I meet the same questions. But I don't know how to
solve it.

[Bug 740382] Re: gtk-logout-helper crashed with SIGABRT in __libc_start_main()

2011-05-07 Thread Linda Spencer
This happened after I installed 11.04 to a 16GB Toshiba USB stick, and
booted the stick - about 30 seconds after the Unity Desktop came up. I
hadn't tried doing a thing yet with the mouse or keyboard.

Please note: since an update to 10.04 Lucid, I've been unable to get
preboot and boot screens, and no amount of fiddling with grub2 made any
difference. The screen does come on after the default kernel is loaded,
but not at the proper resolution (16:10) for my wide screen, which
leaves fat vertical black stripes on either side of the screen.

My BIOS is the original version, and needs updating (all the drivers
too) - but I can't do the flash when the black screen prevents me from
getting into Windows and/or BIOS. Live CDs also show no screen, (Even
Windows XP), so the boot fails waiting for my input. This is a show-
stopper for me.

I wonder if this new bug is related to the firmware problems I just
described.

Confirmed for 945GM Intel graphiccard on a Thinkpad X60. Never had an issue

Everything works fine as long as the 2nd Monitor has same or less resolution
than 1st monitor.

2009-11-17 Thread Linda Halligan
I also got this error message when I ran "sudo apt-get install
virtualbox-ose virtualbox-ose-source" on my amd64 server.

It appears that the linux-headers-virtual package is not listed as a
dependency which is why the configuration of virtualbox-ose-source
fails.

Short term fix: Manually running sudo apt-get install linux-header-
virtual.

Long term fix: make linux-headers-virtual a dependency for virtualbox-
ose-source

[Bug 447440] [NEW] Upgrade of tzdata package resets timezone info

2009-10-09 Thread Linda Halligan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tzdata

During an apt-get upgrade on a server running Hardy 8.04.3 LTS the
tzdata package was updated.

The package version upgraded from 2008h-0ubuntu0.8.04.1 to 2009m-
0ubuntu0.8.04.

I expected that the system would keep it's previously specified timezone
information.

Instead the timezone was reset to EDT during the package upgrade.

This is a particularly bad thing in production environments where time
differences between the clock and file timestamps trigger alerts. This
also particularly bad when going through a patching cycle on multiple
servers, since it requires extra steps to be taken outside the upgrade
process.

2008-04-09 Thread Linda Polman
Hey Emil

I just removed the jumper from my harddisk, and guess what: kernel-15 loaded
like it should!
Even more: grub did not take 30+seconds for stage1.5 (it took ages to get into
the bootmenu ever since I had the sata disk in.. a friend said it's crappy
hardware, nothing you can do.. but removing the jumper helped).. Perhaps that's
the reason too that the openSUSE installer would not see my pata disk either..
just my sata disk..

anyways
It just booted up fine :D:D
not sure if you'll still need the dmesg, but I ran one for you just after
reboot.

Thanks again for your help :D

I'm ok with openening my case and all.. but I wonder if single drive mode is a
good thing to do in my rig?
I have a 160GB WD pata disk, on which I have my windows and kubuntu. and a
500GB Sata disk for all my data.
My mobo is a Asus K8V se Deluxe, with AMD64bits processor, I think the 3000+
(2GHz). I run Kubuntu 32bits though.

I will try the new mount option tomorrow, before I try the Hard disk
thing ^_^ I'll let you know what happens.

[Bug 213308] Re: Update from 2.6.24-12 to -14 or -15 results in changed uuid for root partition

2008-04-09 Thread Linda Polman
Ok, I just tried out what you instructed.. it recognised my card reader with
the sd-card in it.. dmesg said [numbers] sde :sde1
I did the mkdir /mnt and tried
mount /dev/sde1 /mnt

but I got an error: Failed Mounting /dev/sde1 on /mnt : Invalid Argument

So I rebooted.. got back in Kubuntu with the -12 kernel. Then I thought
well maybe I could make some screenshots then with my camera, so I
rebooted again to the -15 kernel.. but instead of the busybox I got
this:

[150.583498] ata3: SRST failed (errno = -16)

and nothing happened after that, no busybox..
I rebooted to try the -14 kernel, but there I got the ata3 error too, and no
busybox anymore either... guess I killed something?? :S

any hints would be helpful.. I'm pretty new to linux, very little
experience with console/shells.. I have no idea what the invalid
argument was, or why busybox is gone now..

[Bug 213308] Re: Update from 2.6.24-12 to -14 or -15 results in changed uuid for root partition

2008-04-09 Thread Linda Polman
Hi Emil,

I installed all the updates that Kubuntu found had for me, so I suppose the
latest kernel packages too.
I just gave the -15 kernel another try, but still nothing... so here's my fstab.

Cheers
Linda

And the cat /proc/version_signature > version.log
which the wiki said I should include too.

Hope this helps

[Bug 213308] [NEW] kernel 2.6.24-14 and -15 won't boot

2008-04-07 Thread Linda Polman
Public bug reported:

I run Kubuntu 8.04 with KDE3.. I got some updates recently, first kernel
-14 then kernel -15, but neither of them will boot.. I get the Kubuntu
logo with the blue loading bar.. nothing happens.. Alt+F2 shows me this

Starting up
Loading please wait

Check root= bootarg cat /proc/cmdline
or missing modules, devices: cat /proc/modules ls /dev
ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/9c60e178-a4eb-48d0-936e-26962c7f48e3 does not exist.
Dropping to a shell!

Busybox 1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-5ubuntu12) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands

(initramfs)_

Rebooting (Ctrl Alt Del) and delecting the -12 kernel in the grub menu
works fine.. Kubuntu loads and works right away..

[Bug 58095] Re: slapd cannot be stopped with initscript

2008-03-30 Thread Linda
I just setup my LDAP on my Ubuntu server, and I could only
"/etc/init.d/slapd start" I could not stop slapd using
"/etc/init.d/slapd stop". It give me "Stopping OpenLDAP: slapd.". I only
could use "kill -9 "

I have try changes the users and group of the related file, still
cannot. I am not using /etc/default/slapd file.

I could see the file in the /var/run/slapd/

Any ideal what happend?
