[Bug 1267650] Re: fglrx causes segmentation fault on boot

2014-05-30 Thread Lukáš Chmela
The installation is just about running:
chmod +x amd*
./amd* --buildpkg Ubuntu/trusty
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

But you would need to install some build dependencies (exact steps
should be here:
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Trusty_Installation_Guide#Before_you_start).
Anyway, I tested all the official AMD versions except the recently
released 14.6 beta. None of them fixed the problem so I highly doubt
this one will make any difference.

Ge-org Brohammer have you also tried the new AMD Catalyst 14.6 beta
from official AMD's webpage?

[Bug 1267650] Re: fglrx causes segmentation fault on boot

2014-02-22 Thread Lukáš Chmela
I can confirm this behavior since fglrx 12.11 if I am right. The only
exception was fglrx-updates package from Ubuntu 13.04 repository which I
am using now (the fglrx package from the same repository causes system
freeze like all the other versions do).

Relevant (unsolved) threads are probably:
http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=831
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2200018

I have Acer Aspire 8943G notebook with AMD Mobility Radeon HD 5850
(Intel IGPU disabled in BIOS).

3.7.0-030700rc1-generic (there was only a problem installing fglrx but
the kernel has installed well).

** Description changed:

After fresh installation even stereo configuration is set. From the menu
can be selected 4.0 configuration making the rear left and right
speakers work, however, front center and LFE (subwoofer) do not emit any
sound in any application. They can be only tested (and they are working
  within this command) by `speaker-test -D default -c6 -twav`.

[Bug 839800] Re: 5.1 built-in surround detected as 4.0 on Acer Aspire 8943G with ALC670

2012-10-20 Thread Lukáš Chmela
Thank you for your advice, Christopher M. Penalver.

I have tried kernel version 3.6.2-030602.201210121823 (amd64) from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.6.2-quantal/ running on
Ubuntu 12.10. Version 3.7-rc1 from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v3.7-rc1-quantal/ is not installable for me because of the
missing *_all.deb package.

The bug still persists in the 3.6.2 kernel - I can only choose Analog
4.0 Surround Output from the system sound menu in the top panel (front
center and LFE speakers are not recognized).

I will run apport-collect once I uninstall the upstream kernel as it
needs the one from quantal repository.

[Bug 839800] Re: 5.1 built-in surround detected as 4.0 on Acer Aspire 8943G with ALC670

2012-10-20 Thread Lukáš Chmela
** Tags added: apport-collected quantal

** Description changed:

After fresh installation even stereo configuration is set. From the menu
can be selected 4.0 configuration making the rear left and right
speakers work, however, front center and LFE (subwoofer) do not emit any
sound in any application. They can be only tested (and they are working
  within this command) by `speaker-test -D default -c6 -twav`.

[Bug 348522] Re: gvfsd-gphoto2 memory leak

2012-10-20 Thread Lukáš Chmela
I have a Valgrind log using a wrapper for /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd-gphoto2 as
Sebastien adviced.
However, I have not managed to copy more than a 19MB (RAW photo file), thus I
am not sure if it will help. All bigger files (videos) ended up with time out
error as the Valgrind memchecks take probably too long (Nautilus seems to
require getting a response within 30 seconds after making a copy request).

Test run on Ubuntu 12.10 where the memory problem persists - I have
tried coppying a 1.7GB video file using gphoto2 protocol in Nautilus
(without Valgrind wrapper) and it begun consuming memory right after
entering the directory with the video file (for obtaining a preview) -
leaving the directory didn't stop raising memory usage - it raised
somewhere to 5GB of RAM (used only by gvfsd-gphoto2) after what I closed
the Nautilus window - this unallocated all the 5GB of memory.

After entering the directory again, there was the video file with default video
icon showing no video preview.
After pasting the video file into a local directory gvfsd-gphoto2 begun
consuming memory again but the Nautilus dialog showed 0 bytes copied. Then
after 30 seconds the copy dialog has been closed showing the time out error as
with Valgrind (this is new behavior, it didn't happen at least with Oneiric
where I was able to copy the file if I had enough memory - so now, I'm NOT ABLE
TO COPY A BIG FILE FROM A CAMERA AT ALL). After closing the error window
stopping the copy operation, however, gvfsd-gphoto2 continued allocating memory
up to the 1.7GB - then all the memory has been freed immediately.

Please ask if you need another information, I hope to get this very old
issue finally fixed - for now, I'm marking it confirmed.

Thank you in advance.

Oh my god.. I have no idea who from the kilometre-long list of
maintainers to contact. They really need a way to do it easier.

Could anybody familiar with kernel development report the bug upstream?

2012-09-08 Thread Lukáš Chmela
I can confirm that this bug still occurs using the kernel version
3.6.0-030600rc4-generic_3.6.0-030600rc4.201209011435 from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.6-rc4-quantal/ .

The internal stereo microphone doesn't react and built-in 5.1 speakers
are recognized as 4.0

[Bug 1046449] Re: Acer Aspire 8943G internal stereo microphone doesn't work

2012-09-05 Thread Lukáš Chmela
** Description changed:

The internal stereo microphone in the laptop doesn't work.

- A workaround is to mute one of the two channels - making the microphone
+ A WORKAROUND is to mute one of the two channels - making the microphone
input mono only - using e.g. hda_analyzer or possibly pavucontrol. I was
not able to get both channels working simultaneously - as one channel's
volume gets higher, the input volume gets lower and lower as if the two
- channels interferred.
+ channels interfered.

There is an existing bug #683901 filled about the stereo microphone.

-
- In addition, the built-in Dolby Home Theater 5.1 Cinematic Surround speakers
are recognized at best as 4.0 (unusing front center and LFE which is rear
center) - only if I select 4.0 from the list in System volume, default is
stereo (that's wrong, isn't it?!) . I was not able to get these two to work
even using hda_analyzer. There is also a bug filled about it as #839800 but, as
well as the thread at ALSA bug tracker, is dead. In the ALSA bugtracker, I was
advised to send a mail to the ALSA mailing list - I tried sending the mail
twice but was waiting a year for absolutely no response - the mail wasn't even
published in the list if I'm right. I have really no idea what more could I do
about it.

[Bug 1046449] [NEW] Acer Aspire 8943G internal stereo microphone doesn't work

2012-09-05 Thread Lukáš Chmela
Public bug reported:

The internal stereo microphone in the laptop doesn't work.

A workaround is to mute one of the two channels - making the microphone
input mono only - using e.g. hda_analyzer or possibly pavucontrol. I was
not able to get both channels working simultaneously - as one channel's
volume gets higher, the input volume gets lower and lower as if the two
channels interferred.

There is an existing bug #683901 filled about the stereo microphone.

In addition, the built-in Dolby Home Theater 5.1 Cinematic Surround speakers
are recognized at best as 4.0 (unusing front center and LFE which is rear
center) - only if I select 4.0 from the list in System volume, default is
stereo (that's wrong, isn't it?!) .
I have really no idea what more could I do
about it.

Tested on Ubuntu 12.10 - today's build (5th September 2012)

[Bug 969165] Re: hdparm: excessive Load_Cycle_Count with some WD "Intelli-Park" HDDs

2012-07-08 Thread Lukáš Chmela
I have a WD7500BPVT-22HXZT1 and the Load/unload cycle count in disk
utility increased from 12,000 to 13,000 within about an hour on battery!

hdparm -B doesn't have any effect on the frequency of parking of disk
heads up until 254 which completely prevents the heads from parking, nor
hdparm -S has any effect on the delay between individual parkings (if it
should have any).

The drive is a Western Digital Scorpio Blue.

[Bug 916906] Re: When gparted opens mounted internal Ext* volumes will then show as unmounted in nautilus "Devices" & be removed from unity launcher

2012-05-01 Thread Lukáš Chmela
I can confirm the strange behavior. The ext4 devices show as unmounted
in the Devices section in Nautilus when gparted is started and show up
as mounted in the Computer section in nautilus (so they are present
twice in the left Nautilus panel). They disappear from Unity panel
completely.

[Bug 819537] Re: O2 Micro integrated card reader doesn't work at all on Acer Aspire 8943G

2012-01-22 Thread Lukáš Chmela
Update: xD cards are still not recognized at all with this workaround -
logs don't show any new entry.

** Description changed:

The internal reader in my Acer Aspire 8943G laptop from O2 Micro
manufacturer doesn't work at all with Ubuntu 11.04 and 11.10. It doesn't
mount any memory card nor recognize that a card has been inserted
(system log doesn't show any new message when I insert or remove a
  card).

I have tried using A-DATA 16GB SDHC Class 6 and a very old 16MB long
  MemoryStick or whatever it was.

A workaround is adding "options sdhci debug_quirks=0x40" into a
configuration file in /etc/modprobe.d and then running `sudo update-
  initramfs -u -k all`.
+
+ This has made SD cards working but xD cards are still not recognized at
+ all.

[Bug 819537] Re: O2 Micro integrated card reader doesn't work at all on Acer Aspire 8943G

2012-01-15 Thread Lukáš Chmela
`sudo update-initramfs -u -k all` has to be run after that in order to
make the changes permanent - otherwise you would need to do modprobe -r
sdhci_pci sdhci && modprobe sdhci sdhci_pci after every boot.

[Bug 819537] Re: O2 Micro integrated card reader doesn't work at all on Acer Aspire 8943G

2012-01-11 Thread Lukáš Chmela
There is a workaround from
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/605043/comments/7

Simply add a "options sdhci debug_quirks=0x40" line into a new file
(e.g. card-reader.conf) in /etc/modprobe.d

** Tags added: fix workaround

** Description changed:

The internal reader in my Acer Aspire 8943G laptop from O2 Micro
- manufacturer doesn't work at all. It doesn't mount any memory card nor
- recognize that a card has been inserted (system log doesn't show any new
- message when I insert or remove a card).
+ manufacturer doesn't work at all with Ubuntu 11.04 and 11.10. It doesn't
+ mount any memory card nor recognize that a card has been inserted
+ (system log doesn't show any new message when I insert or remove a
+ card).

I have tried using A-DATA 16GB SDHC Class 6 and a very old 16MB long
  MemoryStick or whatever it was.

- I have also tried some workarounds posted all over the Internet
- including adding "options sdhci debug_quirks=0x40" into a configuration
- file in /etc/modprobe.d but it didn't work. Somewhere in the Internet,
- there had been also a linux driver for the O2 Micro SmartCard reader,
- but I don't really think that it is suitable for my card reader and,
- anyway, as the driver was quite old, the download link didn't work.
-
- I tried Ubuntu Oneiric Alpha 2 daily build today and again, the card
- reader doesn't react on card insertion at all.
+ A workaround is adding "options sdhci debug_quirks=0x40" into a
+ configuration file in /etc/modprobe.d.

[Bug 856988] Re: totem cannot play quicktime file after upgrade to oneiric

2012-01-04 Thread Lukáš Chmela
Thanks, removing the ~/.gstreamer-0.10 directory did solve the issue for
me too.

[Bug 886559] [NEW] Unity displays in the background (loses focus)

2011-11-05 Thread Lukáš Chmela
Public bug reported:

Sometimes after some time of using Ubuntu Oneiric, Unity loses focus
completely displaying behind all opened applications as if they were
marked "always on top", even above the unity panel, dash, application
switcher etc.

It happens sometimes when I launch a full screen application in wine or
run a flash video in full screen, I can't really precise how exactly
does it happen.

[Bug 883025] Re: full screen failed

2011-10-31 Thread Lukáš Chmela
A similar thing happens to me when I click to write a new email (or to
response) - it opens in fullscreen but with no gaps and neither the top
panel is accessible nor application switcher (Alt+Tab doesn't do
anything) and if I move to another desktop, I can only see the wallpaper
but with no icons on it and no opened windows that are actually placed
on those desktops.

I can confirm this issue on Ubuntu 11.10 (upgraded from 10.04). I am not
able to close gnome-system-monitor the usual way by clicking on the red
cross in the top left corner, I have to kill it from the processes list.

[Bug 839800] [NEW] 5.1 built-in surround detected as 4.0 on Acer Aspire 8943G with ALC670

2011-09-02 Thread Lukáš Chmela
Public bug reported:

After fresh installation even stereo configuration is set. From the menu
can be selected 4.0 configuration making the rear left and right
speakers work, however, front center and LFE (subwoofer) do not emit any
sound in any application. They can be only tested (and they are working
within this command) by `speaker-test -D default -c6 -twav`.

[Bug 839788] [NEW] Changing the backlight level moves too quickly/much on one button press

2011-09-02 Thread Lukáš Chmela
Public bug reported:

When I turn the backlight level on my Acer Aspire 8943G laptop up or
down a notch by pressing Fn + left/right arrow key (these function as
backlight changers upwards/downwards), the backlight level of the screen
is adjusted by changing it by SEVERAL steps in just one arrow press
instead of changing it by one level.

[Bug 819537] [NEW] O2 Micro integrated card reader doesn't work at all on Acer Aspire 8943G

2011-08-01 Thread Lukáš Chmela
Public bug reported:

The internal reader in my Acer Aspire 8943G laptop from O2 Micro
manufacturer doesn't work at all. It doesn't mount any memory card nor
recognize that a card has been inserted (system log doesn't show any new
message when I insert or remove a card).

I have tried using A-DATA 16GB SDHC Class 6 and a very old 16MB long
MemoryStick or whatever it was.

I have also tried some workarounds posted all over the Internet
including adding "options sdhci debug_quirks=0x40" into a configuration
file in /etc/modprobe.d but it didn't work. Somewhere in the Internet,
there had been also a linux driver for the O2 Micro SmartCard reader,
but I don't really think that it is suitable for my card reader and,
anyway, as the driver was quite old, the download link didn't work.

I tried Ubuntu Oneiric Alpha 2 daily build today and again, the card
reader doesn't react on card insertion at all.

[Bug 819389] Re: [fglrx] screen goes black after logging in on ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850

2011-08-01 Thread Lukáš Chmela
No, with Unity 2D, I can only see the screen redrawing gradually with
three colors right after the login (it draws whole screen from top to
bottom in a color that I don't exactly remember, then in green and then
in blue or aqua) and after that the desktop can be seen normally.

I am only experiencing many crash reports regarding aptd I think, unity
and zockey indicator (sorry for the names, I do not remember them
exactly as I am using Natty now, I could verify them next time I reboot
the laptop and eventually take a video of what happens with both Unity
3D and 2D after login) and somehow bizarre look of the dash but I think,
it is just Unity 2D's problem as it is probably not well-implemented
yet.

[Bug 819389] Re: [oneiric] screen goes black after logging in on ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850

2011-08-01 Thread Lukáš Chmela
** Description changed:

I tried to install the fglrx package manually through apt-get as jockey
failed during enabling it (see bug #819365).

After restart and logging in, the screen went completely black with only
a small rectangle where I could recognize the original desktop
wallpaper. Some rectangular areas appear for a while when the mouse
moves over the top or left panel in Unity and whole desktop (although
panels are not displayed properly or at all, only their shadow can be
seen) can be seen when a window (like Taking a screenshot or Unlogin) is
opened with some rectangular black areas over the window.

I also tried to run `sudo aticonfig --initial -f` after the reboot and
- additionally, I removed the xserver-xorg-driver-ati and xserver-xorg-
- driver-fglrx packages but neither one has any effect after reboot.
+ additionally, I removed the xserver-xorg-video-ati and xserver-xorg-
+ video-fglrx packages but neither one has any effect after reboot.

I attach screenshot taken with the Unlogin window opened as taking
screenshot of the black desktop itself with some rectangular areas drawn
always ended with whole black image.

I also tried to run `sudo aticonfig --initial -f` after the reboot and
additionally, I removed the xserver-xorg-driver-ati and xserver-xorg-
driver-fglrx packages but neither one has any effect after reboot.

I attach screenshot taken with the Unlogin window opened as taking
screenshot of the black desktop itself with some rectangular areas drawn
always ended with whole black image.

[Bug 194916] Re: libmikmod mis-renders ImpulseTracker (.it) files on amd64

2011-07-28 Thread Lukáš Chmela
I can confirm this bug in Ubuntu 11.04 too.

I have tried the package from Giuseppe Iuculano and I think that the
sound is better when racing (maybe correct), however, it still sounds
very weird in the main menu and even more in the Audio menu.

[Bug 813094] Re: Fn keys don't work when a context/application menu is popped up on Acer Aspire 8943G

2011-07-27 Thread Lukáš Chmela
I has also remarked that those keys don't work either when an
application is running in fullscreen! It is a major usability issue as I
am not able to change the volume then.

[Bug 701294] Re: Always show menu bar for non-maximised windows

2011-07-25 Thread Lukáš Chmela
I agree too, having the application menu in system panel for non-
maximized application windows that are even often far far away from the
top left corner where the application menu draws is really terrible,
especially if you have to move the mouse cursor all the way using
touchpad.

For maximized windows it is really useful as it saves some space by a
painless way.

And as for the graphical side, the fade out effect in long window title
that Johannes mentioned seems bad to me too, however, it doesn't appear
in menus for maximized windows, thus in those for the non-maximized ones
it wouldn't be problem if the menu was in its normal place - under the
window header :-)

[Bug 813094] Re: Fn keys don't work when a context/application menu is popped up on Acer Aspire 8943G

2011-07-20 Thread Lukáš Chmela
This also happens during boot and login screen - being not able to mute
sound or adjust the volume before the logging screen appears (or before
you log in) can be fairly annoying when the computer is turned on in a
quiet place. The same behavior can be seen when Application switcher
(Alt+Tab) or Workspace switcher (Ctrl+Alt+Arrow), etc. are active.

[Bug 813094] [NEW] Fn keys don't work when a context/application menu is popped up on Acer Aspire 8943G

2011-07-19 Thread Lukáš Chmela
Public bug reported:

When a context menu is popped up, pressing Fn + any sound function key
doesn't work at all. The other non-sound related function keys do work
properly when a menu is shown, however no libnotify message pops up as
normally (e.g. when changing brightness, enabling/disabling touchpad).
The others that are sound related (Play/Pause, Stop, Rewind, Forward,
Mute/Unmute) also with the Volume wheel do not work at all when a menu
is popped up (including Unit dash etc.).

I am running Ubuntu 11.04.

2011-07-19 Thread Lukáš Chmela
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected natty running-unity

** Description changed:

The internal card reader on my Acer Aspire 8943G doesn't work at all
with any memory card that I have. Inserting it makes no event and no new
entry is written in system log.

- According to a Linux thread, I have tried adding mmc_core, mmc_block,
- sdhci and sdhci_pci into /etc/initramfs-tools/modules and an output
- appeared in dmesg, however, it still doesn't react at all when I insert
- a card into the reader.
