[Bug 246268] Re: acpid eventually stops getting acpi events on hardy
Oh my, that was like 5 years ago :) I still have that laptop although I did upgrade twice since then, and I also switched back from Ubuntu to Debian for a long list of reasons. I wonder how this bug wasn't killed by the "eh, we never replied to your bug, but it's been long enough that the distribution you used is now obsolete, so we're closing it" bug auto-closer bot. Either way, if you work for canonical or volunteer for ubuntu, feel free to close as wontfix since hardy is now very obsolete. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/246268 Title: acpid eventually stops getting acpi events on hardy To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpid/+bug/246268/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 665789] Re: plymouth breaks 'read' in initramfs
It likely is the same, yes. Personally, I stopped caring. I got tired of ubuntu shoving things like plymouth down our throats and came to realize that it was my fault for realizing that ubuntu was not the appropriate distribution for my needs anymore. It's meant for people who don't tinker with their systems, like windows like interactions with their computer, and it's often hard to change its behaviour as well as being a WONTFIX to make the distribution more configurable (like making plymouth optional). So, I just went back to debian, and I'm happy camper. This doesn't fix this bug, but it fixes my problem :) As a side note, things like upstart and plymouth would have gone so much better if they had been carefully documented instead of being rolled out "mostly working and very undocumented" like they were. Thankfully at least upstart now has pretty decent documentation, so better late than never on that front. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/665789 Title: plymouth breaks 'read' in initramfs To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/initramfs-tools/+bug/665789/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 839157] Re: Bluetooth applet (OBEX send/browse) does not work anymore
I installed warty or something and upgraded since then. I have never re-installed. Mind you with ubuntu, you're usually going to end up with a better system if you wipe than if you upgrade, since they don't test upgrades that carefully and do not support 2 version jumps or partial upgrades. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/839157 Title: Bluetooth applet (OBEX send/browse) does not work anymore To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bluez/+bug/839157/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 839157] Re: Bluetooth applet (OBEX send/browse) does not work anymore
Oliver, first I do compile my own kernels, just to clear that up (not that it should make a difference). Second, I'm pretty sure it's not a kernel issue since the same kernel does work with karmic and not with oneiric. Then, since the fuse mount managed to use obex to talk to my phone, clearly the kernel bits work (especially since my non working app started working too at that time), it is userspace that broke in some way.
Сергій, thanks for the hint, obexftp still fails for me while, but obexfs actually works. gandalfthegrey:~# obexftp -b 3c:5a:37:83:7f:2a -l Browsing 3c:5a:37:83:7f:2a ... Connecting...failed: connect Tried to connect for 2ms The user may have rejected the transfer: Connection refused gandalfthegrey:~# mount -t fuse "obexfs#-b3C:5A:37:83:7F:2A" /mnt/mnt gandalfthegrey:~# bluetooth-applet browse files still does not work (it used to). Ok, now I have something very interesting: I have a custom app that talks over bluetooth and it wasn't working. It was getting: > ACL data: handle 12 flags 0x02 dlen 16 L2CAP(s): Connect rsp: dcid 0x scid 0x0041 result 3 status 0 Connection refused - security block Now, if I use mount -t fuse obexfs first, I can browse my files and my other bluetooth app also starts working magically. It seems that fuse manages to do auth better than other apps like obexftp and my custom app, and once that auth has been done, other things just happen to work. As soon as I unmount fuse/obexfs, then things stop working agagin. Clearly, it does something better than the other apps and once it has authed with my phone, other things start working. < HCI Command: Create Connection (0x01|0x0005) plen 13 bdaddr 3C:5A:37:83:7F:2A ptype 0xcc18 rswitch 0x01 clkoffset 0x Packet type: DM1 DM3 DM5 DH1 DH3 DH5 > HCI Event: Command Status (0x0f) plen 4 Create Connection (0x01|0x0005) status 0x00 ncmd 1 > HCI Event: Connect Complete (0x03) plen 11 status 0x00 handle 12 bdaddr 3C:5A:37:83:7F:2A type ACL encrypt 0x00 < HCI Command: Read Remote Supported Features (0x01|0x001b) plen 2 handle 12 > HCI Event: Command Status (0x0f) plen 4 Read Remote Supported Features (0x01|0x001b) status 0x00 ncmd 1 > HCI Event: Read Remote Supported Features (0x0b) plen 11 status 0x00 handle 12 Features: 0xbf 0xfe 0x8f 0xfe 0x9b 0xff 0x79 0x83 < HCI Command: Read Remote Extended Features (0x01|0x001c) plen 3 handle 12 page 1 > HCI Event: Command Status (0x0f) plen 4 Read Remote Extended Features (0x01|0x001c) status 0x00 ncmd 1 > HCI Event: Max Slots Change (0x1b) plen 3 handle 12 slots 5 > HCI Event: Read Remote Extended Features (0x23) plen 13 status 0x00 handle 12 page 1 max 1 Features: 0x01 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 < HCI Command: Remote Name Request (0x01|0x0019) plen 10 bdaddr 3C:5A:37:83:7F:2A mode 2 clkoffset 0x < ACL data: handle 12 flags 0x00 dlen 10 L2CAP(s): Info req: type 2 > HCI Event: Command Status (0x0f) plen 4 Remote Name Request (0x01|0x0019) status 0x00 ncmd 1 > ACL data: handle 12 flags 0x02 dlen 16 L2CAP(s): Info rsp: type 2 result 0 Extended feature mask 0x00b8 < ACL data: handle 12 flags 0x00 dlen 10 L2CAP(s): Info req: type 3 > ACL data: handle 12 flags 0x02 dlen 20 L2CAP(s): Info rsp: type 3 result 0 Fixed channel list < ACL data: handle 12 flags 0x00 dlen 12 L2CAP(s): Connect req: psm 1 scid 0x0040 > ACL data: handle 12 flags 0x02 dlen 16 L2CAP(s): Connect rsp: dcid 0x0040 scid 0x0040 result 1 status 0 Connection pending - No futher information available > ACL data: handle 12 flags 0x02 dlen 10 L2CAP(s): Info req: type 2 < ACL data: handle 12 flags 0x00 dlen 16 L2CAP(s): Info rsp: type 2 result 0 Extended feature mask 0x00b8 > ACL data: handle 12 flags 0x02 dlen 10 L2CAP(s): Info req: type 3 < ACL data: handle 12 flags 0x00 dlen 20 L2CAP(s): Info rsp: type 3 result 0 Fixed channel list > ACL data: handle 12 flags 0x02 dlen 16 L2CAP(s): Connect rsp: dcid 0x0040 scid 0x0040 result 0 status 0 Connection successful There you go, it got through. [Bug 839157] Re: Bluetooth applet (OBEX send/browse) does not work anymore
To add some info, with a 3.1.0 kernel, I have BT working on an old thinkpad with karmic and my 3 android phones. I can browse with obex no problems. With the same 3.1.0 kernel on my now upgraded oneiric laptop (where things used to work with lucid and maverick), I am able to pair with my phones, I have a custom app that's able to talk bluetooth once with my phone, but after that, I see: connect(4, {sa_family=AF_BLUETOOTH, sa_data="*\177\2037Z<\31\0\0\0\0\0\0\0"}, 10) = -1 ECONNREFUSED (Connection refused) And again, phone and laptop are paired, unpairing/repairing works but only helps my app working once, after which it fails (and it used to work just fine with older ubuntus, and still fine with karmic), and browsing with obex fails reliably (while it works with karmic too). browse files with bluetooth-applet still gives me: Failed to mount OBEX volume: Connection refused for my 3 devices that are otherwise paired fine. ** Also affects: gnome-bluetooth (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: gnome-bluetooth (Ubuntu) Status: New => Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/839157 Title: Bluetooth applet (OBEX send/browse) does not work anymore To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bluez/+bug/839157/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 745011] Re: "info: unrecognized option '--convert-db'" on upgrade
If I may Scott, this is an answer one might except from microsoft telling you you can't upgrade from XP to W7 without going through Vista. Obviously you know of ubuntu bug #1. I could understand "sorry, we don't have the resources to test upgrades from any release to any release, but let me see how I can fix this bug", but not "eh, you upgraded wrong, now udev and therefore your entire system won't work, sorry" I realize writing upgrades so that they work from older versions of the package takes more time, but debian has been doing it for 15 years and been doing a pretty good job of it. May I recommend trying to emulate them a bit more here? Back to this issue, if others get bitten by it, the workaround of udevadm.upgrade did not work for me. I had to edit the postinst script and comment out the udevadm info --convertdb line for things to continue. Obviously this means whatever udev DB that might be important to my system will not have been upgraded, but at least I get a better chance of still having a usable system after I reboot it than leaving things as is :-/ -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/745011 Title: "info: unrecognized option '--convert-db'" on upgrade To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dpkg/+bug/745011/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 665789] Re: plymouth breaks 'read' in initramfs
Sorry, I'm going to re-open this because this is still an unaddressed bug: - plymouth breaks initramfs' cryptsetup. - it grabs stdin away from its shell scripts with no rationale as to why or how to turn it off - i t is utterly undocumented whch is unacceptable for a core piece of the system (please point me to docs if I was unable to find them somehow). - it breaks cryptsetup's keyscript=/sbin/cryptgetpw At the very very least "you can add a file to /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/ that sets FRAMEBUFFER=n to override the inclusion of plymouth in the initramfs" needs to be documented somewhere if breaking cryptsetup functionality in initramfs is absolutely necessary. ** Changed in: plymouth (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid => New -- plymouth breaks 'read' in initramfs https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/665789 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[not sure if you get a reply on closed bugs, so Cc just in case. Why are you not > using the standard cryptsetup initramfs script here instead? The > cryptsetup hook is *why* plymouth was pulled into your initramfs. I've been doing encrypted filesystems for almost 5 years and reading with 'read' just fine without any help from plymouth which obviously didn't exist. I am using the cryptsetup initramfs script (and by that I'm guessing you mean cryptroot), and I am using its keyscript feature. cat /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/cryptroot source=/dev/sda2,keyscript=/sbin/cryptgetpw I diffed cryptroot between karmic and maverick and do not see anything that changed and would 'plug with' plymouth, nor do I see what plymouth adds to the equation besides breaking keyscript in cryptroot for me. I also did not find any documentation on what plymouth changes in the I/O system, why it has to do so in initramfs (obviously things work without it, actually only without it for me right now), and I was hoping that its lack of documentation would be improved in maverick, but no: gandalfthegrey:~$ man plymouth No manual entry for plymouth See 'man 7 undocumented' for help when manual pages are not available. gandalfthegrey:~$ man plymouthd No manual entry for plymouthd See 'man 7 undocumented' for help when manual pages are not available. I'm not going to fork this bug as I'm not certain it's actually 'invalid' since I have a valid use of cryptsetup and keyscript that was broken by plymouth, but in case anyone ends up on this bug from google looking for anwers to plymouth issues: - plymouth is unfortunately still badly documented, and last I checked, removing 'splash' does not stop plymouth from messing with boot messages. Last I tried, one also needs to add the hard to find 'noplymouth' to have a mostly normal boot (or you get a stupid text mode ubuntu with rolling progress dots instead of your expected boot messages). - in that 'as normal text mode boot as one can still get with plymouth', just yesterday, plymouth maverick did the following while I was debugging my system: * I finally got a single user prompt to fix a corrupted /usr partition, but only after /usr was already mounted and unmountable despite fuser -kvm /usr * After more tries (boot single), I got a root prompt where plymouth managed to multiplex my keyboard input to another process that was still asking for my root password to get me a 2nd root prompt, both processes stealing keystrokes at the same time. * Later, plymouth got into a code path where it decided to just fsck -f -y /usr without my approval, which scrolled a lot of messages I needed to see, and that were lost forever (a few ended up in /var/log/boot.log, but only the last hundred lines or so, everything else was lost). The problem I just described is not easily repeatable unfortunately, so I wasn't able to file useful bugs about it outside of "plymouth sucks and it prevented me from properly fixing an ailing filesystem". So, that's my plymouth rant (sorry, not shooting the messenger): it definitely only made linux worse and more undebuggable for me (and apparently many others). I'm not expecting you to act on the second part of this bug since it's not related, but I think it's at least useful for the relevant folks to hear that for at least of portions of your users, plymouth definitely made interacting with a booting system worse, much more than it made it better, and that it would be urgent by now to document all about how it changes your system, what it is trying to fix outside of eye candy that many don't like or want, and how to reliably interact with it or work around it when it's misbehaving. However, all that said, since plymouth breaks cryptsetup initramfs with keyscript, can you re-visit the first part of this reply and whether this bug is really invalid? [Bug 665789] [NEW] plymouth breaks 'read' in initramfs
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: plymouth In maverick plymouth 0.8.2-2ubuntu5. I'll skip the amount of grief plymouth has cost me in multiple places, it has been echoed by enough other people in bugs and blogs (long story short, I never upgraded to lucid because of plymouth). I eventually went to maverick and it's a tiny bit better, but as far as encryption and initrd goes, it of course grabs the console away and stops script that read input from working. My encryption script did a simple read PASSWORD feed password to cryptsetup read never works because of plymouth. I edited /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/init-top/plymouth and commented out #printf '\033[?25l' > /dev/tty7 #/sbin/plymouthd --mode=boot --attach-to-session --pid-file=/dev/.initramfs/plymouth.pid #/bin/plymouth show-splash I have no idea why this is there, what purpose it serves, but now that I removed them, I can read the encryption password from the command line again and boot properly. Please consider removing this if it's not absolutely necessary, and more generally when you design system enhancements, remember those who actually need boot messages and console access to work reliably and couldn't care less about splash screens and eye candy that removes access to the system when it boots. [Bug 66003] Re: Cannot paste from Eterm to KDE apps
For what it's worth, on lucid64, Eterm 0.9.5 still can't paste into konsole but this time it looks like it won't paste into konsole 2.4.2 but it'll paste into konsole 1.6.6 run remotely from a hardy system (kde4 vs kde3). I tried rebuilding Eterm from source on my lucid system, but that did not help. It looks like this time konsole is the problem (Eterm can otherwise paste in my other apps, including firefox, chrome, and gnome- terminal). Yet all my other apps can also paste into konsole, except for Eterm. [Bug 499361] Re: upstart randomly stalls boot on network-manager?
Mathieu, you are correct, upstart makes it hard to know what's hanging since it's happening in parrallel in a non deterministic fashion, and it's not like I can run ps at that time. I originally filed this against upstart, because quite franlky upstart does not make it easy to see what the problem is. I however think the problem is with the network-manager init script. I think when I had auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp It would sometimes bring try to bring up eth0 when it wasn't plugged in, and hang. Note that there are 5 pictures: boot with --debug http://launchpadlibrarian.net/37077999/100_upstart_picts.jpg http://launchpadlibrarian.net/37078016/101_upstart_picts.jpg boot without --debug http://launchpadlibrarian.net/37095414/StallPict1a.jpg http://launchpadlibrarian.net/37095417/StallPict1b.jpg boot that happened not to hang: http://launchpadlibrarian.net/37095427/NonStall.jpg I very seldom boot my laptop, especially now that it randomly does not complete booting, and honestly I can't tell for sure which process hangs upstart but it looks like it's network-manager -- upstart randomly stalls boot on network-manager? https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/499361 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

So, after around 2 years in being broken in various ways in each release after dapper, it seems to finally behave for me and do what it was supposed to. Not a moment too soon I suppose, although it doesn't close this bug for those sticking with hardy since it's LTS. -- New networkmanager null assert in Hardy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/227819 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: I start networkmanager I rmmod, insmod my iwl3945 driver and connect to a WPA network with a script I already had. Rocco, I just Emailed mej, the Eterm author/maintainer, and he said he never got patches from you. Do you know where they went? Either way he suggested to upgrade to Eterm 0.9.5 which I grabbed from intrepid and rebuilt from source on hardy64 and cut and paste now works. -- Cannot paste from Eterm to KDE apps https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/66003 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to kdebase in ubuntu. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

Not that it helps a lot, but I have the same exact bug on a 64bit hardy system too. While they aren't 100% identical, my 32bit hardy laptop does not exhibit this. Unfortunately, I can't quite upgrade the affected machine to intrepid. [Bug 246268] Re: acpid eventually stops getting acpi events on hardy
if I may, the importance is not that low. When this happens (which is more than once a week for me), shutting the laptop lid does not put the laptop to sleep since acpid doesn't see the event and the laptop can overheat by running at full bore with the lid closed. Of course, I also kill my batteries in the process. And once you kill and restart acpid, your laptop goes to sleep as many times as the sleep event was queued up, which could be 10mn of sleep restore cycles until you can recover your session. I'm hoping this doesn't happen to too many people (thinkpad Z61p here), but it's far from low impact to me. -- acpid eventually stops getting acpi events on hardy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/246268 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

from what I can tell, the networking pieces are working, unless I'm missing a side function that networkmanager was supposed to provide before it finds its null assert. Honestly, I didn't look at the code, I'm hoping the programmer didn't put NULL assert statements in there if they aren't important, but maybe they aren't. [Bug 246268] [NEW] acpid eventually stops getting acpi events on hardy
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: acpid This started happening after I upgraded my laptop to 1.0.4-5ubuntu9/hardy, it was working on the prior release I had. Problem is that acpid randomly stops getting acpi events from the laptop. What happens is that eventually I would close my lid, and the laptop would not go to sleep. After I re-opened the lid, if I restarted apcid, then it would go to sleep as many times as it missed lid events. I have currently successfully worked around the problem with: 1 * * * * root find /var/log -mmin -240 -name acpid | grep -q acpid || /etc/init.d/acpid restart The problem is somewhat serious since the laptop not going to sleep when the lid is closed and thrown in a backpack not only kills the battery, but can also severely heat up the laptop depending on what thermal protection it has. If I can gather some info on the stuck acpid before I restart it, let me know. ** Affects: acpid (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- acpid eventually stops getting acpi events on hardy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/246268 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 30995] Re: dm_mod causes false busy on mount attempts
well, I lost many hours over this too, and so did the many people who seem to have reported similar problems on the net, before I was able to find them. Most people give a fix as "apt-get remove evms" which is really sad, but understandable. I was of course also running an kernel.org kernel, like I have been doing for 13 years, and I was quite pissed that a dist upgrade removed lvm, installed evms and then broke my box so that it would not even boot (/usr /var different partitions, which therefore meant that my boot didn't get far, and all I got was the cryptic "/dev/sdax is busy, cannot mount or fsck) That evms upgrade can cause extended server downtime to the unsuspecting user, and telling people they should have been running the ubuntu kernel and/or apply the bdclaim patch to their kernel ( http://evms.sourceforge.net/install/kernel.html#bdclaim ) is a bad cop out for someone who just lost hours of work and potentially server uptime. Now that the harm has already been done, please consider removing the legacy devices grabbing section in evms.conf to stop hosing people who are running kernel.org kernels. I understand that this comment should be re-assigned to the evms package, but I'm not sure I can do that, so I'll let you do it.
