[Bug 375141] [NEW] closing notebook shuts down external display

2009-05-11 Thread Mark Dwyer
Public bug reported:

Just upgraded from Intrepid Ibex to Jaunty Jackalope (9.04) on a Dell
Inspiron 1420 notebook.

System>Preferences>Power Management> On AC Power is set to Do Nothing
when laptop lid is closed.

I switched to an external display only (turning off notebook display)
with

sudo xrandr --output LVDS --off --output VGA --auto

This works fine.

Now however, when I close the notebook lid, the external display is also
turned off. Under Intrepid, with these conditions, closing the notebook
lid would leave the external display on. This is what I expect to
happen. That is I expect that once Power Management is set to do nothing
when the lid is closed (on AC Power) that closing the lid should not
shut down the external display. I verified that I am running on AC
power. Instead, the external display turns off when the notebook lid is
closed.

[Bug 363892] Re: No sound in Dell Inspiron 1420 in Jaunty

2009-05-25 Thread Mark Dwyer
Thank you for these directions. I too lost sound under Jaunty on my
1420n. First I reversed a change that I had made to

/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

when I lost sound in upgrading from Gutsy to Hardy. At that point, I
had added the line

options snd-hda-intel model=auto

to the alsa-base.conf file. That seemed like an "snd-hda-intel model
quirk" so following the post above I removed it.

I then made the lanai-sound changes above and rebooted. Sound works
great. Thanks again.

[Bug 363892] Re: No sound in Dell Inspiron 1420 in Jaunty

2009-05-26 Thread Mark Dwyer
Actually after restarting the inspiron, I've lost sound again. Also
ever since I originally lost sound under jaunty I have had a really
annoying system beep that sounds like an electric shock and that isn't
controlled by the volume level. Any ideas where this beep came from and
how to get rid of it? Thanks.

[Bug 363892] Re: No sound in Dell Inspiron 1420 in Jaunty

2009-05-27 Thread Mark Dwyer
Hi Alex,

Thanks for the PC beep fix. Everytime an email arrived I felt like I was
being shocked. Is there a package that would allow me to replace the
electrocution sound with something like a gentle bell?

I checked the volume control settings you suggested. Everything is
turned up, but I still have no sound. I don't have Headphone, unless it
goes by a different name. The controls I have under HDA Intel (Alsa
Mixer) are: Master, PCM, Front, Surround, Center, LFE, and PC Beep. All
except PC Beep are turned all the way up. Still no sound.

When I lost sound, I also made the edit to /usr/share/alsa/init/00main,
replacing the single reference to 00_mainend with 00main_end. After
rebooting still no sound.

[Bug 363892] Re: No sound in Dell Inspiron 1420 in Jaunty

2009-05-27 Thread Mark Dwyer
Ok. Here's a big hint. All I have to do is edit and save
/etc/modprobe.d/lanai-sound. To start, I had

options snd-hda-intel model=dell-3stack

When I commented this line out and restarted, I had sound. To check, I
tried restarting a second time. No sound. I then went back and added and
deleted a whitespace to the lanai-sound file and saved it. Note that
all the lanai-sound file now has in it is the options line above
commented (#) out. Restarted the inspiron and sound came back.

So it's not the content of lanai-sound that matters. It's whether it's
new or not. What is that about?

Re: [Bug 363892] Re: No sound in Dell Inspiron 1420 in Jaunty

2009-05-28 Thread Mark Dwyer
Thanks Alex. The only difference I saw was in the value of Master
Playback Volume. But I think this was something I adjusted. When I had
no sound it was 81, when I had sound it was 84. When I didn't have
sound I moved the Master Playback up and back to check that there was
no sound. I think that accounts for the discrepancy.

comment.count 1
comment.range '0 - 127'
comment.dbmin -9525
comment.dbmax 0
iface MIXER

value 81
}

I also don't think that editing the lanai-sound file matters. I think
I just get sound on every other reboot. Or maybe it is how I edit the
file. Maybe I have to make sure that it starts with a "#" rather than
a whitespace.

[Bug 300637] Re: autofill problem evolution enter breaks address

2009-05-29 Thread Mark Dwyer
I have the same problem with evolution with one particular address:

Mike Harris .

I found that when I type "mharr" and get the autocompletion suggestions,
there are two (because I have 2 different email addresses for this
person). If I hit the down arrow to select the email address I want, and
then hit enter, the email address is correctly entered. If I just try to
hit enter, I get the comma-separated email address similar to what is
described above.

[Bug 363892] Re: No sound in Dell Inspiron 1420 in Jaunty

2009-05-31 Thread Mark Dwyer
Ok. Think I got it. Can anyone confirm that saving old lanai-sound and
alsa-base.conf files by adding an extension to them and keeping them in
/etc/modprobe.d/ is a bad idea? Once I moved the detritus I created to
an oldfiles folder I got sound on two restarts in a row. The clue here
was running the alsa-info script and noticing that it contained multiple
driver loads and old driver loads that matched greps of the same driver
names. When Daniel Chen talked about removing all quirks in all files
in /etc/modprobe.d above, that meant ALL FILES.

I don't know if this is the same bug or not, but icsl times are not
displayed correctly in my Evolution emails. I am using Jaunty but this
problem goes back to Gutsy, at least for me. I received an .ics
attachment from the East Coast for a meeting at 14:30 EDT/11:30 PDT. I
am on PDT. Rather than showing the call at 11:30, it shows it as being
at 10:30. I've attached the meeting.ics file. I can't seem to copy and
paste how this is displayed in Evolution.

I note that in Thunderbird, the time is listed as 14:30 EDT - that is - at
least it is listed correctly for the East Coast.

[Bug 270346] Re: Messages are sent with wrong identity when using multiple identities

2008-12-26 Thread Mark Dwyer
I have two separate IMAP accounts I am accessing from evolution
(2.24.2). They use different SMTP accounts. On the Account Editor page,
neither account has "Make this my Default Account" selected. Even so,
in the "Evolution Preferences" window Acct #1 is listed as the default
account. When I select the Inbox for Acct #2, and compose a new
message, the default identity is that of Acct #1. There is a scroll bar
in the "From" field that allows me to select Acct #2 as my identity, but
if I forget to do this it is sent from the (wrong) identity - Acct #1.

A work-around for this is to create a third, dummy account that is not
activated, and to make this the default account. Then my "From" field is
blank. Then the message cannot be sent unless I manually select (the
appropriate) identity.

I note that Thunderbird selects identities based on whichever Inbox is
highlighted.

(2.24.2) on Intrepid Ibex. They use different SMTP accounts. On the Account
Editor page,
neither account has "Make this my Default Account" selected. Even so,
in the "Evolution Preferences" window Acct #1 is listed as the default

This is what I expected to happen (and I thought this worked under
Hardy Heron). Instead, the default identity for any mail composed "under" any
IMAP inbox is that of the "default" account.

[Bug 254980] Re: Calendar displays appointments/meetings at incorrect times

2009-06-10 Thread Mark Dwyer

When: Thursday, June 11, 2009 2:30 PM-3:00 PM (GMT-05:00) Eastern Time (US &

Actually after restarting the inspiron, I've lost sound again. Also
ever since I originally lost sound under jaunty I have had a really

how to get rid of it?

When I didn't have
sound I moved the Master Playback up and back to check that there was
no sound. I think that accounts for the discrepancy.

   control.28 {
comment.access 'read write'
comment.type INTEGER
comment.count 1
comment.range '0 - 127'
comment.dbmin -9525
comment.dbmax 0
iface MIXER
name 'Master Playback Volume'
value 81
}

When I didn't have
sound I moved the Master Playback up and back to check that there was
no sound. I think that accounts for the discrepancy.

comment.count 1
comment.range '0 - 127'
comment.dbmin -9525
comment.dbmax 0
iface MIXER

value 81
}

I don't know if this is the same bug or not, but icsl times are not

problem goes back to Gutsy, at least for me. I received an .ics

I note that in Thunderbird, the time is listed as 14:30 EDT - that is - at

I also don't think that editing the lanai-sound file matters. I think
I just get sound on every other reboot. Or maybe it is how I edit the
file. Maybe I have to make sure that it starts with a "#" rather than
a whitespace.

[Bug 363892] Re: No sound in Dell Inspiron 1420 in Jaunty

2009-05-25 Thread Mark Dwyer
Thank you for these directions. I too lost sound under Jaunty on my
1420n. First I reversed a change that I had made to

/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

when I lost sound in upgrading from Gutsy to Hardy. At that point, I
had added the line

options snd-hda-intel model=auto

to the alsa-base.conf file. That seemed like an "snd-hda-intel model
quirk" so following the post above I removed it.

I then made the lanai-sound changes above and rebooted. Sound works
great. Thanks again.

[Bug 311602] [NEW] evolution assigns wrong identity with multiple IMAP accounts

2008-12-26 Thread Mark Dwyer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I have two separate IMAP accounts I am accessing from evolution
(2.24.2) on Intrepid Ibex. They use different SMTP accounts. On the Account
Editor page,
neither account has "Make this my Default Account" selected. Even so,
in the "Evolution Preferences" window Acct #1 is listed as the default

This is what I expected to happen (and I thought this worked under
Hardy Heron). Instead, the default identity for any mail composed "under" any
IMAP inbox is that of the "default" account.

John,

Thank you for your reply. After I sent this bug report I realized
that I sent it to the wrong place. I am having problems with
evolution, not thunderbird. Thunderbird is working great, and does
not have this problem. I have resent this bug report to evolution.
Again thanks for your reply. I think this "bug" can be considered
resolved, at least as far as thunderbird goes.

I verified that I am running on AC
power. Instead, the external display turns off when the notebook lid is
closed.

Just updated evolution. Very cool that multiple IMAP account selection
has been fixed. Thanks!

[Bug 311602] [NEW] evolution assigns wrong identity with multiple IMAP accounts

2008-12-26 Thread Mark Dwyer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I have two separate IMAP accounts I am accessing from evolution
(2.24.2) on Intrepid Ibex. They use different SMTP accounts. On the Account
Editor page,
neither account has "Make this my Default Account" selected. Even so,
in the "Evolution Preferences" window Acct #1 is listed as the default

This is what I expected to happen (and I thought this worked under
Hardy Heron). Instead, the default identity for any mail composed "under" any
IMAP inbox is that of the "default" account.

2008-12-27 Thread Mark Dwyer
John,

Thank you for your reply. After I sent this bug report I realized
that I sent it to the wrong place. I am having problems with
evolution, not thunderbird. Thunderbird is working great, and does
not have this problem. I have resent this bug report to evolution.
Again thanks for your reply. I think this "bug" can be considered
resolved, at least as far as thunderbird goes.

When I didn't have
sound I moved the Master Playback up and back to check that there was
no sound. I think that accounts for the discrepancy.

   control.28 {
comment.access 'read write'
comment.type INTEGER
comment.count 1
comment.range '0 - 127'
comment.dbmin -9525
comment.dbmax 0
iface MIXER
name 'Master Playback Volume'
value 81
}

2009-06-10 Thread Mark Dwyer

When: Thursday, June 11, 2009 2:30 PM-3:00 PM (GMT-05:00) Eastern Time (US &
Canada).
