[Bug 1309578] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 suddenly reboots when booting from Live USB AMD A8 6600k

2014-06-07 Thread Martin Zuther
I tried muhfi-asbin's solution (thanks for that!). After booting into
recovery mode, I installed "fglrx-updates" and rebooted. So far, my
computer seems to be fine.

[Bug 677989] Re: Long wait when querying disk

2010-11-21 Thread Martin Zuther
Having finished writing this bug report, I had an idea I should have had
before. What if the ext3 file system of my "/home" partition was by
some means broken?

So I moved all my files from my "/home" partition to another one (using
the "System Rescue CD"), reformatted "/home" as ext3 and moved all files
back. Rebooted into Kubuntu 10.10 (amd64) and no problems whatsoever!
:)

I'll keep you posted if the problem reappears...

[Bug 677989] Re: Long wait when querying disk

2010-11-21 Thread Martin Zuther
Let me correct myself, the first "unblurring" icon is of course the hard
disk icon. The KDE icon comes last... :)

Also, I forgot to describe how the bug manifested itself in Kubuntu
10.04. Logging into KDE was fast and the problem occurred later on,
whenever my home directory was first queried. That is, when I quit
Emacs (it happened on writing the file "~/.recentf"), started Dolphin
and moved to "~" or started Konsole and ran "ls -la ~". Interestingly,
"ls -l ~" did not trigger the problem.

The problem did then vanish, unless I did a lot of programming (I was
debugging faulty memory buffers at the time) or had my system running
for a looong time with lots of work done. This recurrence, however, was
not reproducible - it just happened occasionally.

[Bug 677989] [NEW] Long wait when querying disk

2010-11-20 Thread Martin Zuther
Private bug reported:

Hi!

This is a bug that has occured since Kubuntu 10.04 (everything worked
fine in 9.10 and before). I just didn't get to report it as I had to
write my Ph.D. thesis... ;)

After entering username and passwort on logging into KDE, the startup
screen shows up and the first icon (white "KDE" on blue) is "unblurred".
At that moment, a heavy disk activity starts. Approximately 70 seconds
later, the other icons "unblur" and logging in continues uninterrupted.
The system then works fine. This happens every time on my desktop
computer, both on a 32- and 64-bit kernel. My 32-bit laptop, however,
seems unaffected.

Another way to reproduce the bug: when the KDE login screen comes up,
press CTRL-ALT-F1, log into bash and type "ls -la". Again, heavy disk
activity followed by the output of "ls" some minute or so later.

A third way to reproduce the bug: my "/home" resides on a separate
partition. I changed "/etc/fstab" so that this partition is mounted to
"/media/home" instead, rebooted, logged into KDE - everything worked
fine. I then started "konsole", mounted "/media/home" and ran "ls
/media/home/$USER/". Again, heavy disk activity followed by the output
of "ls" a while later. This is BTW how I produced this bug report on a
fresh and up-to-date install of Kubuntu 10.10 (maverick). My current
kernel:

  Linux spittelfink 2.6.35-22-generic #35-Ubuntu SMP Sat Oct 16 20:36:48
UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

I have tried to debug this on my own for a while. But I didn't find any
special processes that lock my system or anything strange, so far.
Maybe you can help me a little.

I can now only hope that I haven't forgotten anything... :)

Best regards,

Martin

[Bug 490246] Re: impressive dies on ooimpress generated pdf files in Karmic

2010-04-18 Thread Martin Zuther
Could someone *please* fix this? This bug makes "impressive" completely
unusable for a lot of people! I have supplied a *very* simple patch (4
lines) that has already been accepted by the author of "impressive", but
as he seems to be involved in a major rewrite of impressive, it might
take quite a while until a fixed version of "impressive" will be
available.

BTW, I have tried to contact the upstream package manger and never
received a reply.

Thanks for listening,

Martin

[Bug 490246] Re: impressive dies on ooimpress generated pdf files in Karmic

2010-01-26 Thread Martin Zuther
Hi pp06610,

please do not try to apply patches by hand. The patch file for this bug
fix is rather simple, but most patch files aren't. There is an extra
application called "patch" that does the work for you.

First, download the patch file "impressive.patch" to a convenient
location. In this example, I'll assume that you have downloaded the
file to your home directory. Then open a console window and run the
following command:

  sudo patch --backup /usr/bin/impressive ~/impressive.patch

This will apply the patch and create a backup (/usr/bin/impressive.orig)
in case things go wrong. You need superuser rights (sudo), because
normal users do not have sufficient rights to change the files located
in /usr/bin/.

If you are uncomfortable with using the console, look for someone who is
used to it or do a bit of googling first.

Good luck!

[Bug 490246] Re: impressive dies on ooimpress generated pdf files in Karmic

2010-01-14 Thread Martin Zuther
You're welcome! As a side note, I have contacted the original author of
"Impressive", and he'll integrate the patch into the next release of the
software.

Nevertheless, I think that upstream should also be contacted and asked
to apply the patch. There's nothing worse than having a presentation
and the computer suddenly "freaking out" somewhere in the talk. I tried
to send the patch to Debian myself, but "pgpv" didn't seem to like me
today, and I don't want to compromise the package by patching it without
being able to validate its signature.

I have found the culprit: the function "decode_literal" doesn't filter
out NULL values, while the function "pygame.display.set_caption" expects
strings without NULL values. If you know that, the solution is rather
easy. I have attached a patch that works for me.

[Bug 153759] Re: gtkpod-aac unable to find support scripts

Hi Tom,

I'm currently moving to a new town, so this will be short... ;)

First close "gtkpod", then open the file " ~/.gtkpod/prefs" in an editor
and change the paths. In my case, I had to change "/usr/share/gtkpod-
aac/scripts/" to "/usr/share/gtkpod/scripts/", and everything seems fine
now.

Good luck,

[Bug 370542] Re: Accessing http://localhost gives a 403 Forbidden when using apache "allow localhost" directive

2009-05-02 Thread Martin Zuther
Hi!

Damn, you're fast... :)

I tried Jonathan's suggestions (A) and (B) as listed under EVIDENCE, and
each one resolved the issue.

Still, I think there's more to it than "IPv6 awareness" alone.
Otherwise, running "sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart" wouldn't change
anything, would it? By the way, "sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 reload" does
NOT help at all, suggesting that this problem might lie outside of
Apache's config files.

@Andreas: I'm using the Gnome NetworkManager applet, so it's session
based. Is that what you meant?

BTW, I always reinstall my complete system using the graphical installer
and then restore (and of course thoroughly adapt) my important settings
using a config file backup software I wrote. When diffing the old and
new "/etc/hosts" files, the "localhost" entry in the ::1 line of
"/etc/hosts" was clearly new, but I kept the addition.

[Bug 231034] Re: desktop freeze when moving emacs in workspace switcher

2009-02-07 Thread Martin Zuther
Hi!

I can confirm this bug on my system (Ubuntu 8.10 intrepid). Until now I
always thought that Firefox was the "culprit", as it often froze when I
switched from Emacs GTK to Firefox.

The interesting part is that this bug has so far *never* occurred during
a switch from Emacs GTK to Konqueror, but very often during a switch
from Emacs GTK to Firefox.

I'll try switching off "assistive technologies" and report back when I
know whether it helped.

[Bug 151382] Re: nvidia with compiz and with dual core freeze

2009-02-07 Thread Martin Zuther
Hi!

This is probably obvious - if you want to apply the solution
permanently, just add the line

  echo 1 | tee /sys/devices/system/cpu/sched_mc_power_savings

to the file "/etc/rc.local". But make sure you insert it *before* the
last line ("exit 0"), which you must not remove.

All the best,

Martin

[Bug 151382] Re: nvidia with compiz and with dual core freeze

2009-02-05 Thread Martin Zuther
Hi!

It seems that Ubuntu 8.10 (intrepid) is also affected by this problem.
But after trying hirumono's solution, things look much better. There is
however an easier way to achieve it - just start your system, open the
terminal and type:

echo 1 | sudo tee /sys/devices/system/cpu/sched_mc_power_savings

You can verify that it works with "cat
/sys/devices/system/cpu/sched_mc_power_savings" ...

Thanks for the solution, it was bitterly needed by me!

[Bug 297110] Re: System crashes using firefox / network

2009-01-20 Thread Martin Zuther
Hi!

I'm starting to get somewhere (yes, my system just crashed again...).

I'll attach an archive with my X server log file - there's a backtrace
in the end -, my "kern.log" and my "syslog". The crash happened at
about 19:02 h.

Thanks,

Martin

P.S.: This bug doesn't show up anywhere on

there a reason for it?

[Bug 278095] Re: MASTER crash in getenv() ... spi_atk_bridge_exit_func()

2009-01-20 Thread Martin Zuther
Hi RockeT,

backtraces end up in the directory /var/crash.

If you know your way around the console, you could try "apport-cli"
without additional options. This should look in /var/crash for pending
bug reports.

If this doesn't work (i.e. all reports have already been processed), do
a "ls /var/crash" and see if you can find the backtrace yourself. Then
just call "apport-cli -c /var/crash/your-backtrace".  I'm not a
professional "backtracer" myself, but this procedure helped me once or
twice...

Good luck,

Martin

[Bug 297110] Re: System crashes using firefox / network

2009-01-18 Thread Martin Zuther
Hi Dan,

my system just crashed again and "apport" is enabled (it caught another
application crash three days ago). However, there's no new crash report
in /var/crash ...

I'm willing to cooperate, especially as this is an issue introduced by
"intrepid" and it's a severe one at that - but I'm at a loss as what to
do now. I can't possibly launch my X server in debug mode for an error
that occurs once per week, can I?

FYI, this time, "firefox" was not running, unless it didn't fully quit
and was lurking around in the process table somewhere. Here's my
relevant system log from a few minutes before the crash to now:

[Bug 72609] Re: K3b temporarily ejects disk before verification

2009-01-16 Thread Martin Zuther
Hi!

Same problem for me. There's a temporary workaround, though. In "K3b"
options, open the "Advanced" tab and mark this:

  [x] Do not eject medium after write process

Damn, this thing has annoyed me for so long, and I had actually
forgotten about this setting... Works fine here, even though there
might of course be caching issues like kko already mentioned.

Have fun,

Martin

2009-01-16 Thread Martin Zuther
Hi!

I just an across this problem today. Installing "at-spi" and "python-
pyatspi" from "intrepid proposed" and reinstalling "gnome-orca" seems to
have solved the issue for me. After changing to "intrepid-proposed":

  $ firefox http://www.ubuntu.com
  $ firefox http://www.ubuntu.com
  $ firefox http://www.ubuntu.com
  $ firefox http://www.ubuntu.com
  $ firefox http://www.ubuntu.com

After getting back to "intrepid":

  $ firefox http://www.ubuntu.com
  Segmentation fault (core dumped)
  $ firefox http://www.ubuntu.com
  Segmentation fault (core dumped)

And forward again to "intrepid-proposed":

  $ firefox http://www.ubuntu.com
  $ firefox http://www.ubuntu.com
  $ firefox http://www.ubuntu.com
  $ firefox http://www.ubuntu.com
  $ firefox http://www.ubuntu.com

My system's here:

[Bug 297110] Re: System crashes using firefox / network

2009-01-15 Thread Martin Zuther
Hi,

I probably have a related problem here. Since upgrading to "intrepid"
(on the very day it came out), my X server has crashed about five times,
but restarted afterwards. The first time might have been unrelated,
though, it happend directly after "nvidia-glx-177" was updated by
"synaptic" with a related error.

Other things I've noticed, "firefox" reacts quite slow, and "nautilus"
was also faster in "hardy". Everything's fine under Windows, though.

Here are the "dmesg" entries of the last crash:

[12906.426435] __ratelimit: 21 callbacks suppressed

[Bug 302017] Re: evince didn't respond when changing page in PDF

2009-01-08 Thread Martin Zuther
Hi Pedro,

unfortunately I'm not able to reproduce the problem. I chose to report
it anyway, as I thought maybe you could make something of it or that it
might be the missing link to an already known problem.

If it happens again I'll try a backtrace, but to be honest, chances are
pretty low.

[Bug 226410] Re: Intel 3945: please disable_hw_scan=1 by default --- struggling to connect to AP that worked fine in Gutsy

2008-11-24 Thread Martin Zuther
Hi Martin,

I have been running the kernel 2.6.27-8-generic for a few days now, and
so far my WLAN connection hasn't dropped out, nor has the kernel itself
shown any problems. I have tried this both when the kill switch was off
during startup and also when it was switched too the off state after the
laptop had already been running.

The only thing that doesn't work is the automatic detection of networks
after changing the kill switch. Network manager says something like
"WLAN networks disabled" ("Funknetzwerke sind deaktiviert" in
German...), which is also grayed out, and running "sudo iwlist scan"
results in

  loInterface doesn't support scanning.

  eth0  Interface doesn't support scanning.

  irda0 Interface doesn't support scanning.

  wmaster0  Interface doesn't support scanning.

  wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down

  pan0  Interface doesn't support scanning.

Running

  sudo modprobe -r iwl3945
  sudo modprobe iwl3945

actually starts a scan and connects me to known WLAN networks.

Thanks for working on this bug, and please tell me if you need further
informations.

2008-01-17 Thread Martin Zuther
Hello!

I run an up-to-date Gutsy, and my version of sudo (1.6.8p12-5ubuntu2)
still shows the bug. I think it is a serious security problem for the
everyday user, because if you are unaware of the problem and encounter
it for the first time, anybody happening to look over your shoulder
knows your root password. Therefore I vote for a fix in Gutsy, not only
in Hardy!

[Bug 148070] Re: KeyJnote failing Error: pdftoppm produced an unreadable file (page 1)

2007-11-07 Thread Martin Zuther
If you can't adapt Marc's command for yourself, then download the patch,
move it to your home directory, open the shell ("Terminal") and type:

  cd /usr/share/keyjnote
  sudo patch --backup keyjnote.py ~/keyjnote_v10.0.patch

You have to run "patch" as superuser (sudo), otherwise you'll get an
error. This command also creates a backup of the original file
(--backup), which is always a good idea if things go wrong, and loads
the patch file from your home directory (~). :)

[Bug 111179] [apport] crash after "envy24control -D delta_1010"

2007-04-29 Thread Martin Zuther
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: alsa-tools

Not knowing "envy24control", I tried to start it using the option "-D
delta_1010". My "asound.conf" follows:

pcm.delta_1010
{
type hw
card M1010
device 0
}

I admit I should have read the man page first, but still, the
application should give a warning instead of crashing... :)

All the best,

Martin

[Bug 65964] Re: Pymol does not start because of wrong python interpreter name in start script

2007-02-18 Thread Martin Zuther
I want to confirm that this bug affects Edgy.

Also, I'd like to double Pawel and Patrik - please include this fix for
Edgy, as PyMol is totally useless without it and the fix is trivial
(i.e. it doesn't break any other packages).

2007-01-03 Thread Martin Zuther
Hi!

The updated ipw3945 module from http://kmr.nada.kth.se/~mini/ubuntu/
works fine so far on my Lenovo ThinkPad Z61m 9453-A11 with kernel
2.6.17-10-generic.

Thanks a lot (and merry Christmas... ),

[Bug 72925] Re: Problems with WLAN and "ipw3945"

2007-01-03 Thread Martin Zuther
Hi!

It's me again...

I forgot to add that I *have* to reload the "ipw3945" module with
"modprobe". Switching the WLAN adapter's kill switch off and on again
doesn't work.

BTW, I currently use a patched version of the "ipw3945" module,
according to Launchpad bug #63418.

Greetings,

Martin

[Bug 72925] Re: Problems with WLAN and "ipw3945"

2007-01-03 Thread Martin Zuther
Hi!

I am back home now and so are my problems, while my wireless
configuration worked flawlessly at my parents' WLAN:

I could always reconnect by running a simple "sudo ifup eth1" after a
"sudo ifdown eth1" at my parents' WLAN (even though the WLAN LED
flickered for a while), but back home my interface "eth1" gets lost
after "sudo ifdown eth1".

Here is my current "wpa_supplicant.conf" (unchanged, except that I
removed the "eapol_version" and "ap_scan" options):

   ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant

   network={
   ssid="some_ssid"
   scan_ssid=0
   proto=RSN
   key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
   pairwise=CCMP
   group=TKIP CCMP
   psk="some_psk"
   }

And here is a sample session with these settings (at my home):

[Bug 72925] Re: Problems with WLAN and "ipw3945"

2006-12-25 Thread Martin Zuther
Hi Carthik,

sorry for the delay. Here are the steps to reproduce the problem:

1. Save some money and buy a Lenovo ThinkPad Z61m 9453-A11 (which includes an
Intel 802.11abg wireless card).
   The problem will probably occur on other laptops with the same card, though.

2. Install "Kubuntu Edgy 6.10" with the latest updates.

3. Get a (decent ?) WLAN router, set it up to use WPA2-PSK and install the
packages "wireless-tools" and
   "wpasupplicant".

4. Edit "/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf" as recommended by the
man pages:

  ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
  eapol_version=1
  ap_scan=0

  network={
 ssid="..." # enter ssid here
 scan_ssid=0
 proto=RSN
 key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
 pairwise=CCMP
 group=TKIP CCMP
 psk="..." # enter psk here
  }

5. Run the following commands:

  sudo modprobe ipw3945
  sudo ipup eth1

6. If you're lucky, the connection will come up and will work for a long (or
even very long...) time. If you're not,
   the WLAN LED will start to flicker, and nothing will work until you run the
following commands:

  sudo ipdown eth1
  sudo modprobe -r ipw3945

   The flickering will *always* start when you run "ipdown eth1", and it
of course ends when you unload the driver.

7. If everthing works fine, repeat steps 5 and 6 until it doesn't... ;)

8. If you cannot connect to the WLAN network at all, set "ap_scan" in
"wpa_supplicant.conf" to 2 and repeat
   steps 5 and 6.

I just found out today that if you remove "ap_scan=..." from
"wpa_supplicant.conf", you can always connect to the
network, even if the WLAN LED flickers. I stay with my parents for a few days,
though, so it may be different when
I return home (fingers crossed...).

Another thing to take into account: I didn't upgrade Kubuntu to "Edgy", but did
a fresh install. "/etc/hostname"
was empty until I noticed and entered my hostname today.

Have a nice Christmas (if you celebrate it), and thanks a lot!

Martin
