[Bug 1249067] [NEW] nvidia prime causes freeze at start up

2013-11-07 Thread Matt Joiner
Public bug reported:

I believe nvidia-prime modified my xorg.conf to use intel during boot. I
had to remove xorg.conf to enable my system to boot to unity again. I've
attached the file that caused the problem.

My system has onboard intel graphics on the motherboard, and a beefcake
nvidia card to which my monitors are connected.

[Bug 664534] Re: feature request: do-release-upgrade --download-only

2012-06-23 Thread Matt Joiner
@karora: No it wouldn't be too difficult. One would apply the
sources.list change to a temporary or sandboxed clone of the apt config
that shares the dpkg cache lock, and then do the equivalent of dist-
upgrade --download-only. The goal is to populate the package cache with
the next releases packages but leave the system config unmodified. There
was a bug that the package cache is cleared during upgrade (thereby
wasting your effort), but this is alleged to be fixed.

[Bug 563474] Re: scrollbars are really hard to see with the ambiance/radiance themes

2011-11-14 Thread Matt Joiner
Still can't make out the contrast, this is a very serious visual problem
with the default theme.

In the old days when cleanlooks and ubuntu human were popular, this
wasn't a problem. Cleanlooks had a bright blue slider, and ubuntu human,
orange. The new unity scroll bars are okay for those apps that use them:
they have a thin sliver of orange, and a giant popup handle when u get
near.

I'm attaching a screenshot of the problem.

[Bug 885027] Re: SUID Mount Helper has 5 Major Vulnerabilities

2011-11-03 Thread Matt Joiner
1) It does not work out of the box on all distros (it needs
configuration)

Contribute whatever magic you used to work around doing this
configuration yourself.

2) It may not even be installed on some distros, for example, it isn't
installed by default on gentoo.

I'm certain that Calibre isn't installed by default. Since you will
responsibly put all your other dependencies in your Calibre packages,
why not add pmount to those dependencies?

3) It has been deprecated in favor of udisks (which incidentally calibre
tries to use before falling back to the mount helper).

Why not put a dependency on udisks?

[Bug 665168] Re: Rhythmbox fails to connect to DAAP share

2011-05-04 Thread Matt Joiner
The bug renders connecting to DAAP shares with non-standard ports (3689)
impossible. Entering _any_ port will also cause host lookup failure as
the port is included in the host name.

TEST CASE: In Rhythmbox, click Music-Connect to DAAP Share... in the
menu. Enter a hostname and port number in the syntax specified in the
dialog (one does not even need to be there). Click the newly added share
in the Shared section of RB's side pane. An error dialog Cannot
resolve hostname will come up, regardless of whether or not the host
name is valid.

[Bug 516412] Re: Pressing Enter causes X to freeze

2010-02-10 Thread Matt Joiner
Note to others! The conf file goes in /etc/**init** not init.d, which
I'm used to typing.

The provided conf file did not work, I did reinstalls of all plymouth,
xorg and nvidia packages, and rebooted several times.

No ubuntu logo. I saw a blue and white bar, which after using the new
conf didn't jumble as it has earlier, it was a single line. (Previously
it would spread out over other lines with error messages about
ureadahead). Also a fsck warning right after pressing the grub menu
option has gone.

$ cat /proc/fb
0 VGA16 VGA

$ ps aw | grep X.*vt
 1731 tty7 Rs+0:06 /usr/bin/X :0 -br -verbose -auth
/var/run/gdm/auth-for-gdm-4fxC0r/database -nolisten tcp vt7
 2282 pts/0S+ 0:00 grep --color=auto X.*vt

I am using BINARY driver (nvidia-current, no idea what's going on with
the packages, so I installed this one, and configured with nvidia-
settings).

I always get the freeze, the provided .conf slightly improves the boot
process, but it's no worse than it was.

Steve does this change do more than adjust the plymouth-splash.conf?

For others, I found that pressing Alt+SysRq+K as soon as GDM first loads fixes

Running 'sudo apt-get remove plymouth' has fixed it permanently.

[Bug 519410] [NEW] Lucid freezes at gdm login

2010-02-09 Thread Matt Joiner
Public bug reported:

I installed Lucid at alpha1. Since the 2.6.32-12 kernel, my system
crashes as I'm typing my password into gdm. The scroll lock light on the
keyboard flashes briefly on about the 3rd or 4th key and the system
locks up completely. The mouse and keyboard stop responding, and I have
to reset the power.

Using the recovery option in GRUB I've tried removing nvidia, and
booting some earlier kernels to no avail.

[Bug 459054] Re: ubiquity partition step does not show some hard drives

2009-12-21 Thread Matt Joiner
This problem was solved for me in the Red Hat Bugzilla.
Here's the link: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=533703

I was directed to look at this issue:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Common_F11_bugs#dmraid-nodmraid
Running the recommanded command `dmraid -rE` then solved the problem, on both
Fedora *and* Ubuntu.

I've seen various comments around the place mentioning that this problem
is due to changes in the kernel and how it handles BIOS RAID settings.
Hopefully it will eventually be fixed upstream, if not here.

[Bug 379761] Re: MASTER - FF 3.5 font hinting does not honour gnome-settings

2009-11-01 Thread Matt Joiner
I fixed it by doing the following:

$ sudo rm /etc/fonts/conf.d/10-hinting-slight.conf
$ sudo ln -s /etc/fonts/conf.avail/10-hinting-medium.conf /etc/fonts/conf.d/
$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig

Qt apps and the like were none the worse for it.

Relevant details will likely only include the existence or
preexistence of software raid setups on your system.

Hardware specifics should be unnecessary.

load.

[Bug 459054] Re: ubiquity partition step does not show some hard drives

2009-10-30 Thread Matt Joiner
I was able to install using the alternate installer. An option comes up
to disable software raid, which I accepted. As a result I'm able to see
all disks. Later after installation completes, I ran update-grub, and
got some errors about software raids (of which I should have none, and
if I do they're unintentional), and it fails to parse operating systems
on other drives. I removed the dmraid package, and reran update-grub,
and it works correctly.

This problem is somehow related to incorrectly picking up software raid
volumes that aren't in use, or previously existed.

A workaround is as I explained, use the alternate installer, and
immediately remove the dmraid package.

[Bug 459054] Re: ubiquity partition step does not show first hard drive

2009-10-25 Thread Matt Joiner
I can confirm this also occurs in both in live mode, and pure installer
mode, for the i386 AND amd64 RC installers.

Disconnecting the disks I did not want to install on did not fix the
problem, instead the installer session never managed to load X during
boot. I'm not sure if this is related.
