[Bug 1219951] Re: help.ubuntu.com/contributors.html should be removed.

2014-10-21 Thread Matthew East
Benjamin asked me to take a look at bug 1383576, which is marked a
duplicate of this one. I think that the licence does require attribution
of contributors (see paragraph 4(c) of the licence) but agree that
properly maintaining the file is difficult or impossible.

I don't think linking to the Launchpad group (whether or not it points
to former members) is necessarily the answer: that would not attribute
contributors who were never members of the team. Could it be better
perhaps to link to the revision history of the relevant branch(es) which
would contain reference to all authors?

Matt

[Bug 1245685] Re: Unable to connect to wifi AP

2013-10-28 Thread Matthew East
I'm just guessing the affected package. Since I can't connect with WEP
either, I guess that this isn't an issue with wpasupplicant so am
setting this to network-manager.

** Package changed: wpasupplicant (Ubuntu) => network-manager (Ubuntu)

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

For the last couple of months I have been unable to connect to my
wireless access point using Ubuntu. When I try to connect, the system
sees the AP, and asks for the password, and then thinks for a while
before asking me for my password again.

I found another bug which suggested to remove "system-ca-certs=true"
from the config file. But this wasn't found in the config file. I tried
to add "system-ca-certs=false" but this didn't solve the issue.

I've tried two different pieces of hardware (the one which I have used
immediately prior to submitting this bug is as ASUS USB-N13) as well as
all of the different security settings on the access point. All my other
devices (phone, table, TV) are able to connect to the AP without
problems. I am currently using a fresh install of Ubuntu 13.04. I was
unable to try 13.10 because the live usb wouldn't load on my system.

I hope that the information submitted with this bug is enough to
diagnose the issue, but please let me know if further information is
  needed.

  Many thanks for your time,

  Matt

[Bug 970890] Re: Translations are not automatically imported from Gnome-user-docs

2012-04-02 Thread Matthew East
Launchpad imports translations from upstream packages, but gnome-user-
docs is not an upstream package of ubuntu-docs, so that is why
translations don't get imported automatically.

Since we began using gnome-user-docs strings, we have always encouraged
translators to upload upstream translations manually. Some additional
infrastructure would be needed for us to sync gnome-user-docs
translations with ubuntu-docs translations, but I agree that it is a
good idea. I look forward to suggestions as to how that could be
achieved.

Yes, the program is included by default. The point of the automated
message is that an error message of this type indicates a problem with
your hard disk ("input/output error")

[Bug 880507] Re: does not start straight away when installed

2011-11-16 Thread Matthew East
No, you've misunderstood the bug. The indicator does go into the panel
automatically, but it doesn't do so until a logout/login. As I said in
the originally bug report, that wasn't explained during the installation
and it was difficult to figure it out. The applet should go into the
panel as soon as the program is installed, or software-center should
explain that a logout/login is required before it works.

You've filed this bug on the ubuntu-docs package but this isn't about
Ubuntu documentation. I don't know the cause for this, but I would think
that the appropriate package is either network-manager or linux.
Reassigning to the first of these.

In fact, to test my own theory here, I've just tried merging zh_CN from
ubuntu/natty/gnome-user-docs with ubuntu-docs/oneiric, and unfortunately
very few translations were achieved. I have to say that I don't really
know why that has happened, because as far as I am aware, the actual
documentation is reasonably similar. I tried merging the translations
both using Launchpad and using msgmerge and got the same result. So
there may be a toolchain problem there.

[Bug 882664] Re: no Chinese/Simplified translation in oneiric

2011-10-29 Thread Matthew East
I'm quite surprised that there are as many as 13% common strings between
ubuntu-docs/oneiric and ubuntu-docs/natty. Essentially ubuntu-docs in
oneiric is completely and entirely different to ubuntu-docs in natty. I
cannot comment on whether the approach used to produce this figure is
valid.

However, there are two places where many translation teams should be
able to recover a large number of translations:

1. ubuntu-docs/oneiric is very similar to ubuntu/natty/gnome-user-docs
in Ubuntu, so it should be possible to recover a lot of translations
from there[1]:

I merged translations from ubuntu/natty/gnome-user-docs into ubuntu-
docs/oneiric on 1 August 2011 but it is possible that some translation
teams have made progress since then. It looks like an example is
Simplified Chinese, who at that time did not have any translations in
their po file [3] but who now have the template practically fully
translated.

Of course, Launchpad should share translations automatically so when
translating ubuntu-docs/oneiric, if a string appears which has already
been translated elsewhere, it should appear as a suggestion.

[3]
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-core-doc/ubuntu-docs/oneiric/revision/12#ubuntu-help/zh_CN/zh_CN.po

2. ubuntu-docs/oneiric takes a lot of strings from gnome-user-docs
upstream - I do not know exactly how many but I guestimate that it is
about half. Translations can therefore be uploaded from upstream to
ubuntu-docs/oneiric. (This isn't a point which helps Simplified Chinese,
because upstream translations in that language are at 0% [4]).

I know you have asked this of a specific individual, but in case he

It is fine to file bugs on the ubuntu-translations project where the
bug is about translations not having been completed. If you open such
bugs on packages but the package is not responsible for the absence of
the translation, they are likely to be rejected, because those working
on the package have no ability to fix the bug and there is nothing
wrong with the package. That's certainly the approach we use in
ubuntu-docs.

I believe that you know this already because I've seen you correctly
use this approach on another bug.

Robbie,

Yes, once the theme is settled I was planning to adapt it for the
various different parts of help.ubuntu.com. That still includes a fair
amount of docbook material, so a "docbook-based" version of the theme
will be required whether we include the server guide or not. Personally
I think that desktop and server docs should be in the same place.

[Bug 880507] [NEW] does not start straight away when installed

2011-10-23 Thread Matthew East
Public bug reported:

I just installed indicator-weather from software center. However after
doing so I was unsure how to start it. I searched in the dash for the
weather applet but nothing was there. I clicked on empty space in the
panel but nothing happened. I had to log out and in again in order for
it to work, but that wasn't intuitive.

The applet should go into the panel as soon as the program is installed,
or software-center should explain that a logout/login is required before
it works.

[Bug 589057] Re: help.ubuntu.com still uses old logo/branding

2011-10-22 Thread Matthew East
Update:

= Wiki =

I have a working wiki theme here:

https://code.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-core-doc/ubuntu-docs/helpwiki-light-
moin-theme

I'll ask the Canonical Sysadmins to copy it to the wiki server as a non-
default theme for testing and send a call for testing to the ubuntu-doc
mailing list.

= Static section =

I have adapted our build tools for Ubuntu 11.10 to the light-base-theme
found on the ubuntu-website project here:

http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-core-doc/ubuntu-
docs/oneiric/revision/61

However this rather different to the wiki theme which uses a different
codebase and for simplicity I will probably try to reformulate this
using the codebase used on the wiki theme.

After that it will be necessary to port over the theme to the other
releases of Ubuntu covered by the site (8.04 LTS, 10.04 LTS, 10.10 and
11.04).

[Bug 814822] Re: Ubuntu Desktop Guide is not translated

2011-10-20 Thread Matthew East
There are two separate bugs being described here as I understand the bug
report and its comments.

The original report is that the French documentation is not translated
at all, and the report in comment 3 is that the text "Ubuntu Desktop
Guide" in the navigation trail is not translated in Finnish (and other
languages).

The first bug is caused by the fact that the French translations of the
documentation have not been done by the translation team - that's not a
bug with ubuntu-docs, so please contact the French translation team
about this.

The second bug could be a problem with yelp-tools, so I'll reassign the
bug. Gabor, if you have already forwarded that bug upstream, please
could you link it here.

That's an inappropriate usage, because Launchpad will close the bug
automatically if no response is received. "Incomplete" should be used
where further information is required from the original reporter in
order to diagnose the bug.

[Bug 778289] Re: Help button in Unity default launcher

2011-09-27 Thread Matthew East
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 860501 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/860501

John, while I appreciate you taking the time to respond in a bit more
detail, your response is a vast overcomplication of a simple problem
with a simple solution. Users need help - it is a truth universally
acknowledged. In the current version of Ubuntu, contrary to versions
prior to 11.04, users can't find it. This is a regression. The possible
solutions are simple ones and even if there are different possible
solutions, one of the simple ones should be implemented as soon as
possible. There are two easy solutions, one is to put a link to help in
the dash, the other is to put a link to help in the launcher[1].
Discussing these solutions and implementing one is perfectly normal
practice for a bug report such as this one, and closing it pending
specifications and so on simply prolongs the difficulties experienced by
our users.

[1] I appreciate that the launcher is a bit cluttered right now with
unhelpful links, but that is another problem.

The opinion status means a lot more than just that the bug is a
feature request. The "opinion" status essentially closes a bug on the
grounds that there is a *difference* of opinion. You haven't expressed
any different opinion so marking this as opinion is simply another way
of saying that it's a feature request *which you have no intention of
paying any attention to so want it off your list of open bugs*.

Feature requests on the other hand can and should be valid bugs until
they provoke a difference of opinion which deserves discussion
elsewhere.

 - Ref https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Status

"The status 'opinion' means there is a difference of opinion around a
particular bug and people are free to continue the discussion, but the
project or package maintainers need to move to other work and are
considering the issue closed. The idea is that bugs can be marked
closed, so developers aren't wasting time on them, but discussion can
still be on-going."

2011-09-24 Thread Matthew East
It is inappropriate, and frankly rude, to close a bug without explaining
the reason why you are doing it. In the Ubuntu community we encourage
polite and respectful discussion.

I'm reopening the bug as a result.

"Every bug report is a conversation with the reporter. The first contact
any reporter usually has with the Ubuntu community is through a bug
triager, who tries to put together a complete bug report. It's very
important that we give a good impression, so please be polite and try to
use your best English." https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/HowToTriage

[Bug 764744] Re: [UIFe] Add system setting icon to Launcher

2011-09-21 Thread Matthew East
Just to be clear, the only approval that the docteam has given to this
is to add an icon to the launcher. If, as appears to be proposed, the
system settings icon is also *removed* from the session menu, it seems
to me that this will break every piece of documentation that refers to
system settings. I haven't checked but I would assume that there are a
lot of these and therefore we can't agree to this at this late stage in
the release cycle.

This comment might be redundant in circumstances where the release team
has rejected the UIFE but I thought it was worth clarifying anyway.

[Bug 589057] Re: help.ubuntu.com still uses old logo/branding

2011-09-06 Thread Matthew East
Hi Manjul - sorry for the late response. The steps are pretty much set
out at my long comment 8:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-
docs/+bug/589057/comments/8

Can you have a read of that, then a dig around in the relevant files,
and ask questions to me by email?

I should say that members from the Canonical website team (Anthony
Dillon and Steve Edwards) have also indicated to me that they are
working on this, but I don't know what the status of their work is - I
haven't seen any bzr branches in progress on the project relating to
this. I've subscribed them to the bug to get their comments.

As it is getting closer to the end of the release cycle, I will make
this bug a priority for completion by the end of this cycle and work on
it myself if others are unable to do so.

[Bug 841340] [NEW] Needs to strip translations from /usr/share/help

2011-09-04 Thread Matthew East
Public bug reported:

As of oneiric several packages now install documentation in
/usr/share/help instead of /usr/share/gnome/help. Examples are ubuntu-
docs (as from version 11.10), gnome-user-docs and deja-dup.
Pkgbinarymangler needs to be updated to strip translations which are
installed in that location as well as /usr/share/gnome/help.

Thanks!

Public bug reported:

location of the default desktop yelp from ghelp:ubuntu-help to help
:ubuntu-help. Yelp needs to be updated to reflect this.

Just for completeness, other help pages outside the software-center

documentation team of any further changes (and thanks for having done

They aren't exactly identical. ubuntu-docs and gnome-user-docs in
oneriric are currently quite similar but that won't remain the case
for very long.

We will need to make a seeding change to remove gnome-user-docs for
the default install after this change is made and add it as a
dependency for the Gnome Shell packages (unless that is already the
case).

As I understand it, the package (which contains only the "C" locale) can
be copied to natty-updates. The translations are dealt with separately
and I can't think of any reason why it should be a problem to copy the

[Bug 819158] [NEW] Patch yelp for new documentation homepage

2011-08-01 Thread Matthew East
Public bug reported:

In oneiric we will not use the same document id for the yelp homepage as
we did in natty.

Yelp needs to be patched so that it opens the document id "ubuntu-help"
as its homepage, and not "gnome-help".

Ideally, the homepage would be customisable so that it would open
ubuntu-help when running the Ubuntu/Unity session, and gnome-help when
running the Gnome3 session. I believe some work is going on upstream to
enable this but for the time being a simple patch to always open
"ubuntu-help" would be fine.

[Bug 589057] Re: help.ubuntu.com still uses old logo/branding

2011-07-28 Thread Matthew East
Anthony Dillon of the Canonical web design team has provided some images
which can be used to develop the xslt and moin themes necessary to fix
this bug. Here is information he has provided:

The attached zip contains:

 * background image - to be repeated across the whole background.
 * background header - the background to the header links.
 * background header active - the background to the header links on hover (roll
over).
 * logo ubuntu footer - the ubuntu logo to go at the bottom of the page.
 * logo ubuntu header - ubuntu logo with documentation tagline added.
 * ubuntu.com - an image to help template the page on.

A few tips for the style:

 * Links are #DD4814
 * It would be good if the font was Ubuntu if possible.

[Bug 687670] Re: [Natty] Add a ubiquity slide for GDM Session choosing. Also add to help files.

2011-07-20 Thread Matthew East
This has mutated into two ideas, as I read the comments on the report.

First is the idea that the help be autostarted on first login. That's an
interesting idea, but probably deserves discussion on a wider basis that
just in a bug report. Would you be willing to start a discussion on the
ubuntu-desktop mailing list? Dylan is right that this is only really an
option now that yelp loads very fast, and we have a really inviting
front page for the help.

Second is the idea that the help should contain a page explaining the
different login options. That seems to be a good idea to me. I've opened
a separate bug report dealing with that at bug 813369.

Closing this one.

[Bug 813369] [NEW] Document login options

2011-07-20 Thread Matthew East
Public bug reported:

On bug 687670 there has been some discussion of the idea of adding a
help topic to deal with the options at login, particularly in relation
to choosing a different desktop (Unity, Unity 2D, etc). I think this is
a good idea. This bug is to keep track of progress on such a topic.

Look forward to others' thoughts.

I thought that deletion of pages and attachments was limited to

I think that deletion of pages and attachments is not restricted on
wiki.ubuntu.com, but that is a different site and different policies may
be appropriate. That's not a question for the ubuntu-docs project at
all.

[Bug 589057] Re: help.ubuntu.com still uses old logo/branding

2011-07-16 Thread Matthew East
Robbie, I think your comment, and especially the caps, is a bit over the
top. From this page (https://help.ubuntu.com/11.04/index.html) it is
extremely clear that the documentation is for 11.04 and is up to date.
On each page of the serverguide it shows clearly at the top that the
page is for 11.04 (https://help.ubuntu.com/11.04/serverguide/C
/introduction-chap.html). The branding doesn't really imply that the
information is outdated. There is similar branding on the Ubuntu Forum.

Obviously it is important to update the branding, which is why we have
the bug report. But it will take someone with a fair bit of free time
who is familiar (or willing to get familiar) with the documentation
toolchains and processes.

Here is some information on how help.ubuntu.com works and what would be
needed to fix this bug, in case someone is interested in working on it.
If not, I will be looking to work on this bug at some stage over this
release cycle with a view to fixing it by Ubuntu 11.10. If someone wants
to work on this before then, I am happy to mentor it.

There is some information here
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DocumentationTeam/SystemDocumentation/BuildingDocumentation)
but it is probably incomplete and this should help.

*One thing that would be really helpful* would be if someone with
graphic software skills could implement a logo for the top right hand
corner of the site. So, similar to the "Ubuntu wiki" logo on
wiki.ubuntu.com, but enough to make it clear that the site is for
documentation. I guess substituting the word "documentation" for the
word "wiki" in the appropriate font would be sufficient.

help.ubuntu.com has two components, the wiki (help.ubuntu.com/community)
and the static html (help.ubuntu.com/). For consistency both parts
should be updated at the same time. The themes for each component must
be consistent and there should be a way for the user to distinguish
between the two (as there is now).

= Static html =

This is generated from our xml documentation which is found in our bzr
branches. Generally in each bzr branch there is a Makefile which
contains the instructions and commands needed to build the html. The
html is produced by xslt stylesheets which are used in conjunction with
processing tools to build html. Part of the theme is in the xslt files,
and part of the theme is in css files.

For all versions prior to Ubuntu 11.04, the relevant code and theming is
in the ubuntu-doc branches (see the main series here:
https://code.launchpad.net/ubuntu-docs). For Ubuntu 11.04, the relevant
code and themeing is in the gnome-user-doc branch. The xslt files are
different for Ubuntu 11.04, because we changed the documentation format
used for Ubuntu documentation, using Mallard instead of Docbook. This
required some new theming to be written.

There are certain pages which are generated manually by copying them
over from one release to the next. These include:

 * the index page for each release;
 * the index page for the installation guide;
 * the main index page for the site gets updated manually.

Apart from these, all other pages in the site are generated using the
build tools described above (unless I'm missing something).

Updating this part of the website will involve designing new xslt
stylesheets for the Docbook and Mallard files, and regenerating the html
for each version of Ubuntu carried on the website. We can probably use
one of the themes on the ubuntu-website project
(https://code.launchpad.net/ubuntu-website), probably the light-base-
theme. But the xslt will require some work.

The eventual product can be pushed to our bzr branch for help.ubuntu.com
(https://code.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-core-doc/ubuntu-
docs/help.ubuntu.com), which is automatically synched once a day.

In the future, I think there is an interesting discussion we should have
about whether we should carry so many versions on the website. Having so
many versions makes it quite time consuming and difficult to update.

= Wiki =

The wiki runs on MoinMoin software and the theme is here:

https://code.launchpad.net/~mdke/ubuntu-docs/helpwiki-newtheme

This is pretty much simply taking the moin theme for the new brand
(there is a base here: https://code.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-website-
community/ubuntu-website/light-wiki) and customising it for the
help.ubuntu.com site.

There is no staging server but a good way to test the theme as it is
being developed is to download a desktop version of moin (instructions
here: http://moinmo.in/DesktopEdition) - but make sure you get the same
version as the one used on help.ubuntu.com (1.6.3).
