[Bug 1286638] [NEW] LTS upgrade removes needed dnscache-run package
Public bug reported: I was running through the LTS upgrade of our last production 10.04 server, upgrading finally to 12.04. I have run into a repeat issue with the do-release-upgrade LTS upgrade process. Our configuration calls for the use of DJBDNS rather than Bind or some other DNS implementation. Going through the LTS do-release-upgrade upgrade removes those DJBDNS related packages and substitutes resolvconf and also seems to be related to package ubuntu-minimal. Attached is the term.log of me correcting the misconfiguration of DJBDNS. The result is that DNS is no longer working after the LTS upgrade, until manual correction of the needed dnscache-run package. ** Affects: update-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Attachment added: term.log correcting the package misconfiguration https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1286638/+attachment/4002765/+files/term.log -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1286638 Title: LTS upgrade removes needed dnscache-run package To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/1286638/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1280613] [NEW] Nvidia Optimus + bumblebee configuration not optimized by default
Public bug reported: Hardware configuration is a ThinkPad T540p with GeForce GT 730M. I understand that this graphics chip as some new fangled Nvidia Optimus technology involved. I began testing with Xubuntu 13.10 x64, then re-imaged the system with the Alpha build of Xubuntu 14.04 x64 of 20140214. I have had to do extensive hand editing to the configuration of selecting both nvidia-graphics-drivers-331-updates and the bumblebee packages in order to at least see the Nvidia driver active in the Nvidia Settings applet. I have been updating the modprobe configuration: /etc/modprobe.d/bumblebee.conf commenting out the exclusions for the 331 version driver I have updated the bumblebee configuration: /etc/bumblebee/bumblebee.conf according to the example found here: http://elementaryforum.org/forum/support-assistance/how-to_aa/3996-nvidia-optimus-drivers-and-tools-installation#post3997 To get the NVIDIA Settings to show the board finally... I found this command here: Nvidia Optimus on Linux \ How to use Bumblebee. http://www.linux.org/threads/nvidia-optimus-on-linux.4415/ optirun -b none nvidia-settings -c :8 However starting an additional instance of the NVIDIA Settings applet via the Xubuntu menu system shows that instance not being able to detect the Nvidia drivers being loaded. So it seems that one must use the optirun command to start individual programs that the Nvidia drivers are requested to service the video for?! This makes absolutely no sense. Shortly I am seeking automatic configuration of the latest Nvidia binary drivers to be used 100% of the time. Even the old Envy Nvidia binary driver installer worked far more simply than dealing with this Nvidia Optimus technology. [Bug 1279557] [NEW] Support ntfs partition type for brand new blank hard drives
Public bug reported: I have been advised that the ubiquity package is where this request should end up. Adding Linux to an existing hard drive with Windows / NTFS format already present magically adds a partition type of NTFS to the Use As pick list. Thus one can establish mount points for the copy of Windows already present on the drive. However it is not possible to pick NTFS when the partition is not pre- existing. Thus to restore a partition backed up with NTFS3G / ntfsclone, one cannot prepare those partitions and mount points during installation of Linux. This has been a challenges for quite many versions which have included NTFS3G and ntfsclone, as it has been fully possible to backup / restore Windows images using Linux... just not to be able to set the mount points during the Linux OS installation. Please lift this slight restriction, allowing blank drives to be loaded in a Dual-Boot configuration utilizing for the Windows half an NTFS3G / ntfsclone prepared image. If you can drop this into a daily, please let me know when that has been done and I will pull down an xubuntu daily image to test / verify. [Bug 874698] Re: Ubuntu Lucid, Oneiric, and Debian 6.0.3 prevent system POST once installed
@Phillip #9 Thank you for following up on this case. What ever partitioner the Ubuntu LiveCD GUI installer uses to partition the disk made a partition table which was incompatible with the latest BIOS available from Intel for the motherboard in this system. Placing the hard disk drive into a system with older Intel motherboard (also with latest available BIOS for that motherboard) would POST and boot properly. I have since migrated this troublesome system to Xubuntu 12.04, and that LiveCD installed BEAUTIFULLY on a brand new blank hard disk drive. So unless a different partitioner is used between the Ubuntu and Xubuntu LiveCD's, then this problem is resolved by the code in 12.04. In the case Ubuntu and Xubuntu use a different partitioner, then my success with Xubuntu 12.04 is irrelevant. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/874698 Title: Ubuntu Lucid, Oneiric, and Debian 6.0.3 prevent system POST once installed To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/parted/+bug/874698/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

My system is currently running with package: 2011-10-11 04:10 cups- pdf_2.5.0-17ubuntu1~lucid1_amd64.deb I do not see unique filenames in the created PDF's. I changed my configuration per the OP's suggestion and now at least get the job number in the PDF filename. [Bug 507499] Re: All created pdf file have the same name
Greetings Martin-Éric, Per the bug title All created pdf file have the same name... I thought fixed would mean that jobs now are given unique names. Thank you for clarifying what actually was fixed. I was expecting something unique in the filename such as the job number. I thought I was seeing the document title all along... printing several documents from the same program would end up trouncing files silently. I will continue to manually configure cups-pdf per the OP's suggestion: TitlePref 1 as that is the most useful configuration in my case. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/507499 Title: All created pdf file have the same name To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups-pdf/+bug/507499/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I just finally upgraded to 10.04.3 x64 edition a few weeks ago. I had forgotten what I did to generate unique filenames in PDF files. The default behavior is to still not put the job number in the filename. I finally found this old bug report. Appears the fix has been already distributed. Since I am not seeing unique filenames (at least I do not think so as I do not see the job number in the filenames) then what fix was intended? [Bug 874698] Re: Ubuntu Lucid and Oneiric prevents system POST once installed
An associate I work with was able to correctly identify the trouble with loads of Lucid, Oneiric, and the latest Debian. Turns out there is a HDD geometry incompatibility with these newer distros. The work-around that masked the situation was to partition the blank drive with Ubuntu 9.04, then reboot to 10.04.3, specify the mount points for the existing partitions, and thus arrive at success. In my mind, it is absolutely unacceptable for a modern Linux distro to mess up the HDD geometry / partitioning such that at system will no longer POST properly! I ended up RMA'ing a perfectly good / new HDD back to the manufacturer!! Not cool!!! :-| Reclassifying this report against fdisk and not grub2. ** Package changed: grub2 (Ubuntu) = gnu-fdisk (Ubuntu) ** Summary changed: - Ubuntu Lucid and Oneiric prevents system POST once installed + Ubuntu Lucid, Oneiric, and Debian 6.0.3 prevent system POST once installed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/874698 Title: Ubuntu Lucid, Oneiric, and Debian 6.0.3 prevent system POST once installed To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnu-fdisk/+bug/874698/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

The HDD BIOS settings in my computer are as follows: ATA/IDE ModeNative (can not change this) Configure SATA As AHCI S.M.A.R.T. [Bug 874698] Re: Ubuntu Lucid and Oneiric prevents system POST once installed
I was able to clean load 10.04.3 x64 from the LiveCD onto my machine, as usual no POST once loaded. Then I took the drive to the P4/945 based system, installed Lilo, got that configured. I needed to update /etc/fstab back to using /dev devices and not referring to partitions by their UUID. Then it still wanted to put Lilo on the partition, not on the drive. So hand tweaked /etc/lilo.conf just a bit, and was successful with Lilo. Next I purged off the two Grub packages. Finally I took the drive back to my computer... and still will not POST with the 10.04 drive in it. So I guess Grub2 is really not to blame. What else could it be, though? [Bug 874698] [NEW] Ubuntu Lucid prevents system POST once installed
Public bug reported: My trusty main Linux machine, still loaded with Ubuntu 9.04 x86. Intel DG33BUC motherboard, latest BIOS rev Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8500 So to upgrade, I purchased a new drive: Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.C 0F10383 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5 Internal Hard Drive BIOS saw the drive fine, Ubuntu 10.04.3 x64 boots / installed smoothly Eject the CD, reboot, system WILL NOT POST! I see the nVidia BIOS screen, then blacks out, loan cursor at the top of the screen, FDD light stuck on. The cursor is at the top of the screen in that position PRIOR to the Intel splash screen coming on. Thus I know that POST has been halted. Switch drives back to the 9.04 drive, system boots fine. Switch back, same symptoms. Same thing with Ubuntu 10.04.3 x86. Using another computer with Intel D945GNTL MB and Intel P4 631 CPU boots Lucid perfectly fine as installed on the DG33BUC system. So using that system, a disk erase / wipe utility to begin erasing the drive, and THEN the DG33BUC will POST again with the drive installed in it. What does Ubuntu 10.04.3 both x86 and x64 do that is so nasty so as to prevent POST in an Intel DG33BUC based system? ** Affects: grub2 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/874698 Title: Ubuntu Lucid prevents system POST once installed To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/874698/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 709188] Re: Samba in Lucid upgrade killed Envelope Feeder on HP LJ4000 printer
Suggestion noted how to handle responding to a developer question. I had no idea that Incomplete had a timer ticking. BTW: Is there a best place to install Ubuntu Lucid (10.04) packages of Samba higher than the stable release maintained for Lucid? Perhaps this is fixed by a higher release of Samba. In the past when I started with Samba I was using Debian Sarge. I installed Samba from the official Samba repo. However, I have only used official Ubuntu packages since switching to Ubuntu. [Bug 518393] Re: Gtinydns id not created, but two other id's created
Yes the tinydns component of djbdns needs that specific ID. Per DJB (the author) three ID's are needed for a basic installation of djbns. Johannes Hessellund pointed out that a fourth ID is needed for an optional step in the set up of djbdns, so I added that ID as well, and references the URL's to DJB's documentation where both are specified. I have documented my steps of the basic installation using the Ubuntu packages rather than compiling from source here: http://www.lueckdatasystems.com/HOW-TO_Basic_installation_of_Daniel_J_Bernstein_djbdns_TinyDNS_on_Ubuntu_Linux If not in the djbdns package, then in the dnscache-run package. Those are the only two packages I must add to a system in order to set up a basic djbdns implementation. (Yes, those two drag on dependencies as well.) Aaahhh, the binary that the Gtinydns ID is passed in as an arg to comes from the djbdns package, not the dnscache-run package. So yes, I would think at least the original three I proposed need to be added by djbdns. And the same is true for the axfrdns account, the binary that needs it also comes with djbdns and not a separate package. I just have never needed that one, aparently Johannes Hessellund has. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/518393 Title: Gtinydns id not created, but two other id's created -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 709188] Re: Samba in Lucid upgrade killed Envelope Feeder on HP LJ4000 printer
All right, I retested this via testing Samba Port based printing which I used until SpoolSS / Point-n-Print was not working properly in Samba, back in v 3.0.2 time frame. That works properly allowing the check boxes / selection to enable the Envelope Feeder option to be active. I was able to print a COM10 envelope from WordPerfect and it was pulled correctly from the Envelope Feeder. Port based printing is where you go to the ports tab of the printer properties, add a port, and fill in the UNC path to the printer resource on the Samba server. So I believe this is specifically a problem with storing the printer driver on the Samba server via Point-n-Print and printing via SpoolSS. That would also tie in with check boxes not staying checked as the idea behind Point-n-Print is for administrators to be able to publish printers and pre-configure the driver for use with that SPECIFIC printer and its capabilities. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to samba in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/709188 Title: Samba in Lucid upgrade killed Envelope Feeder on HP LJ4000 printer -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 709188] Re: Samba in Lucid upgrade killed Envelope Feeder on HP LJ4000 printer
@Tim: The only application I know of which is able to comprehend the envelope feeder on the printer is WordPerfect which is a Windows application. We run Ubuntu Server edition on our servers, no GUI, no nothing! Yes my workstation runs Ubuntu Desktop edition (9.04 still as I have one application dependent on 9.04 code). Likewise I am printing directly to CUPS and having much better success. Print jobs from Firefox went to never-never land while print jobs from Thunderbird (2.x) would print. Since switching to direct to CUPS printing Firefox is able to print. However that was broken even when the server was running 9.04. I have since upgraded it to 10.04 LTS. And it is not only the envelope feeder which got killed by the upgrade form 9.04 - 10.04. I quote: The PCL 5e and PCL 6 drivers print COM10 envelopes on plain paper from the tray, and they do not even rotate the text 90'. So Samba MUST be doing more than merely spooling print data headed to CUPS. But it is coming from Windows... how much detail could Samba possibly figure out about the print job?!?! I would think Samba merely spools data to CUPS, but apparently not the case. One thing which I just realized, I have not tried to connect with Windows to the print queues on Samba without using the Point-n-Print uploaded drivers. I will try to work up a test environment to test that scenario. Specifically, still printing through Samba but not make use of the driver already uploaded to the server. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/709188 Title: Samba in Lucid upgrade killed Envelope Feeder on HP LJ4000 printer -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

(Other than 7.10 which was the worst release ever, and I never did get a 7.10 box to production state!) What about maverick (10.10) and also natty? Are these versions also affected? As I am sticking with the -26 kernel, none of my servers which run apticron are nagging me for a kernel update. I suppose -26 is too far back and that is the reason I do not get notified. Could someone please attach a comment to this bug report when the new kernel build which includes this fix actually gets distributed so that I may update our systems? [Bug 709188] Re: Samba in Lucid upgrade killed Envelope Feeder on HP LJ4000 printer
Aaahhh, excuse me, Chuck Short: How could this possibly be CUPS which is causing these problems? The workstations print to Samba, which in turn prints through CUPS. CUPS direct printing from Windows workstations works. CUPS does not get involved until the print job reaches the server, however we are having difficulty getting the driver to keep the appropriate option check boxes when using Samba for Point-n-Print, which CUPS has nothing to do with. So how could it NOT be Samba which is causing the trouble? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/709188 Title: Samba in Lucid upgrade killed Envelope Feeder on HP LJ4000 printer -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 692848] Re: Regression between 2.6.32-27 and 2.6.32-26 xfsdump SGI_FS_BULKSTAT errno = 22
@Stefan #8, On our server which I first saw the crash on, only three out of the eight or so xfsdump backups regularly scheduled caused this crash. The others all backed up successfully. The dump I originally started this case with actually produced a partial backup size. The other two backup jobs resulted in 0 length dump files. Thus I decided to focus on the backup job which resulted in some size at all. I could boot from the -26 kernel build and get 100% success backing up. Reboot to the -27 kernel, xfsdump crashes. The crashing has persisted into the -28 kernel build. For now, -26 is where we must stay. Getting no responses here, I referenced this bug report with a note to the XFS developer list. Shortly some xfs chances were identified as being done for the -27 kernel, that one was suspected as having gotten overlooked when xfs code changes were merged into the Ubuntu Lucid code. The thread on the xfs developer list has fallen silent, and now progress has been made on this bug report. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/692848 Title: Regression between 2.6.32-27 and 2.6.32-26 xfsdump SGI_FS_BULKSTAT errno = 22 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
