2016-05-25 Thread Michael Lueck
Rollback successful on all 12.04 servers to PHP build 5.3.10-1ubuntu3.
Websites are again working.

** Description changed:

This morning I applied the following updates to Ubuntu 12.04 webservers:

Looks like I am trying to roll back all those php packages... Which I
see several updates marked Security Update in the changelogs, thus
checking the "security vulnerability" box as rolling back in this case
  is such. :-(

@John #9, I had brought to my attention this:

https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Samba_4.2_Features_added/changed
New smb.conf options

I make use of both OS/2 which has a LANServer client integrated, and the
DOS LANManager client in order to connect to our Samba server for drive
imaging. I was suspecting I need to investigate adding:

client ipc min protocol
allow dcerpc auth level connect

options. If it really seems no smb.conf adjustments were required as
part of applying this proposed update to the Samba packages I will hold
off testing adjusting the smb.conf files for now.

Thank you.

@John #7, no we do not make use of the LDAP backend, thus did not spot
the similarities with bug #1572122.

I suspect this is not directly related to/not to the presence of an LDAP
backend or not.

[Bug 1574228] [NEW] Changes to Samba packages for April 12 prevent legacy Windows clients from logging in to NT4 style domain

2016-04-24 Thread Michael Lueck
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu 12.04 fully patched, this weekend I attempted to apply the
samba 2:3.6.25-0ubuntu0.12.04.2 updates. That resulted in a Samba NT4
PDC that downlevel Windows clients could no longer log in to. Logging
into said Windows machines with a local account and manually issuing the
NET USE command to bring up drive mounts to the Samba server were
successful.

I have taken log snapshots with Samba logging set to level 3 of a
Windows XP virtual machine attempting to connect to the Samba PDC
server.

>From the working log I see:

switch message SMBwriteX (pid 4906) conn 0xb82f9978
  api_rpcTNP: rpc command: NETR_LOGONSAMLOGON
  schannel_fetch_session_key_tdb: restored schannel info key
SECRETS/SCHANNEL/MDLXP
schannel_store_session_key_tdb: stored schannel info with key
SECRETS/SCHANNEL/MDLXP
Forcing Primary Group to 'Domain Users' for mdlueck

Whereas in the not working log I see at the same spot:

switch message SMBwriteX (pid 21144) conn 0xb96f7200
  srv_pipe_check_verification_trailer: failed

Perhaps did Samba make a change that requires something to be specified
in the smb.conf to accept connections from legacy clients?

[Bug 1280613] Re: Nvidia Optimus + bumblebee configuration not optimized by default

2016-04-19 Thread Michael Lueck
Supposedly there is a way to configure the NVidia drivers to force use
of the NVidia chip always. Yes yes, that drains batteries more quickly.
"I do not care."

System76 knows the technique. I sent them an inquiry seeing that they
offer a laptop with the NVidia Geforce GTX 970M or 980M chips. Their
reply was they configure it without the need of Optimus + bumblebee to
always use the NVidia chip.

That tells me it is possible... "How, please?"

[Bug 1447038] Re: Shutdown/Restart of live session guest does not work in Virtualbox, KVM or VMWare

2016-01-13 Thread Michael Lueck
I used Xubuntu xenial-desktop-amd64.iso on 20160113 and in VirtualBox
PLEU 5.0.12 r104815 and the installer still gets hung after it has
ejected the ISO. I know it ejects as VirtualBox flips back from having
the ISO mounted to the drive being empty.

Should not it then get to some message about pressing any key to
restart? Pressing keys did nothing to cause a restart of the VM.

I used VirtualBox's hard reset and the VM boots up just fine. Does not
look completely fixed to me.

[Bug 1526042] [NEW] WARNING Couldn't connect to accessibility bus Failed to connect to socket /tmp/dbus* starting sound-juicer

2015-12-14 Thread Michael Lueck
Public bug reported:

Sound Juicer application will not start on my fully updated Xubuntu
14.04 x64 system today. I tried starting it from the terminal window,
and see this error while doing so:

$ sound-juicer

** (sound-juicer:18540): WARNING **: Couldn't connect to accessibility
bus: Failed to connect to socket /tmp/dbus-xQCoPAmspq: Connection
refused

I tried to run it as root via:

$ sudo sound-juicer

with similar results.

I have removed the files /tmp/dbus-* including the root owned ones from
the sudo attempt.

This sounds similar to defect:

"Couldn't connect to accessibility bus: Failed to connect to socket /tmp/dbus-*"
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1193236

Although all of those reported application issues have been resolved.
Perhaps just Sound Juicer was overlooked?

[Bug 1307546] Re: dist-upgrade from 12.04 - 14.04 axes /etc/X11/xorg.conf

2014-05-27 Thread Michael Lueck
I apologize, I find I have drained my supply of test systems with custom
xorg.conf files. The rest of them are simple machines directly attached
to their display, thus get by just fine without any xorg.conf file at
all. The more complex configurations are at my desk where I make use of
a KVM switch, thus require xorg.conf files as the system can not
directly communicate with my display - the KVM switch blocks direct
access.

Someone else will need to test this.

[Bug 1309927] Re: LTS upgrade from 12.04 to 14.04 deleted xorg.conf file completely

2014-04-21 Thread Michael Lueck
I had this same thing occur on my main desktop computer as well. Knowing
that the xorg.conf file got trounced on my main notebook, I made sure I
had a good backup of my xorg.conf file before beginning the LTS upgrade.

At the conclusion of the upgrade, the xorg.conf file was still in the
directory. Upon IPL, however, it was gone, and X started without the
correct settings. I copied from my backup, IPL, and Xubuntu came up with
the correct display settings.

This desktop system transitioned up to driver package: nvidia-331
during the LTS upgrade. On this system I had already selected: nvidia-
current-updates ... not sure if the notebook had the -updates version
of the package, might have simply been current on that system.

[Bug 1309927] [NEW] LTS upgrade from 12.04 to 14.04 deleted xorg.conf file completely

2014-04-19 Thread Michael Lueck
Public bug reported:

I just completed the LTS upgrade of Xubuntu from 12.04 to 14.04. Upon
rebooting, my notebook lost its dual display behavior of cloning the LCD
to the external display.

Researching, I found no /etc/X11/xorg.conf file in place.

Fortunately I make backups as I need different configuration settings
based on my exact hardware set up configuration. I merely copied the
correct template back to xorg.conf, IPL, and the display is now working
as expected in this hardware configuration.

Aparently, conf files from Xubuntu 12.04 were still correct as I did not
make any changes. The xorg.conf file was mistakenly removed during the
LTS upgrade process.

Any update available on getting the Ubuntu repository updated and in
sync with the official stable release of SQL Ledger before the trusty

[Bug 1304808] Re: All USB ports/devices randomly stop working

2014-04-18 Thread Michael Lueck
I just reloaded the production drive in the test machine with the GA
release of Xubuntu 14.04 x64 and find that the USB mouse is working as
expected.

I note the mention of nvidia drivers in #11. I had not added those what
I found USB ports dead. I need to install those. I had opened a bug
report about difficulties installing the nvidia drivers on this machine,
here:

Nvidia Optimus + bumblebee configuration not optimized by default
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1280613

We shall see if that damages USB mouse support, if it actually works as
well in the GA release.

[Bug 1286638] [NEW] LTS upgrade removes needed dnscache-run package

2014-03-01 Thread Michael Lueck
Public bug reported:

I was running through the LTS upgrade of our last production 10.04
server, upgrading finally to 12.04. I have run into a repeat issue with
the do-release-upgrade LTS upgrade process.

Our configuration calls for the use of DJBDNS rather than Bind or some
other DNS implementation. Going through the LTS do-release-upgrade
upgrade removes those DJBDNS related packages and substitutes resolvconf
and also seems to be related to package ubuntu-minimal.

Attached is the term.log of me correcting the misconfiguration of
DJBDNS.

The result is that DNS is no longer working after the LTS upgrade, until
manual correction of the needed dnscache-run package.

[Bug 1280613] [NEW] Nvidia Optimus + bumblebee configuration not optimized by default

2014-02-15 Thread Michael Lueck
Public bug reported:

Hardware configuration is a ThinkPad T540p with GeForce GT 730M. I
understand that this graphics chip as some new fangled Nvidia Optimus
technology involved.

I began testing with Xubuntu 13.10 x64, then re-imaged the system with
the Alpha build of Xubuntu 14.04 x64 of 20140214.

I have had to do extensive hand editing to the configuration of
selecting both nvidia-graphics-drivers-331-updates and the bumblebee
packages in order to at least see the Nvidia driver active in the
Nvidia Settings applet.

I have been updating the modprobe configuration:
/etc/modprobe.d/bumblebee.conf
commenting out the exclusions for the 331 version driver

I have updated the bumblebee configuration:
/etc/bumblebee/bumblebee.conf
according to the example found here:
http://elementaryforum.org/forum/support-assistance/how-to_aa/3996-nvidia-optimus-drivers-and-tools-installation#post3997

To get the NVIDIA Settings to show the board finally...

I found this command here:
Nvidia Optimus on Linux \ How to use Bumblebee.
http://www.linux.org/threads/nvidia-optimus-on-linux.4415/

optirun -b none nvidia-settings -c :8

However starting an additional instance of the NVIDIA Settings applet
via the Xubuntu menu system shows that instance not being able to detect
the Nvidia drivers being loaded. So it seems that one must use the
optirun command to start individual programs that the Nvidia drivers are
requested to service the video for?! This makes absolutely no sense.

Shortly I am seeking automatic configuration of the latest Nvidia binary
drivers to be used 100% of the time. Even the old Envy Nvidia binary
driver installer worked far more simply than dealing with this Nvidia
Optimus technology. Needs improvement.

[Bug 1279557] [NEW] Support ntfs partition type for brand new blank hard drives

2014-02-12 Thread Michael Lueck
Public bug reported:

I have been advised that the ubiquity package is where this request
should end up.

Adding Linux to an existing hard drive with Windows / NTFS format
already present magically adds a partition type of NTFS to the Use As
pick list. Thus one can establish mount points for the copy of Windows
already present on the drive.

However it is not possible to pick NTFS when the partition is not pre-
existing.

Thus to restore a partition backed up with NTFS3G / ntfsclone, one
cannot prepare those partitions and mount points during installation of
Linux.

This has been a challenges for quite many versions which have included
NTFS3G and ntfsclone, as it has been fully possible to backup / restore
Windows images using Linux... just not to be able to set the mount
points during the Linux OS installation.

Please lift this slight restriction, allowing blank drives to be loaded
in a Dual-Boot configuration utilizing for the Windows half an NTFS3G /
ntfsclone prepared image.

If you can drop this into a daily, please let me know when that has been
done and I will pull down an xubuntu daily image to test / verify.

Thank you! :-)

[Bug 1063350] Re: curl corrupts floating point context

The #4 work-around solved this problem on an x86 based install of

Was there a security risk in that version of the package that the latest
version was suppose to address?

Aptitude is having a hard time locking in that specific back level
version, thus thinks there is an update available all the time.

What can I do to assist with resolving this bug? TIA!

[Bug 874698] Re: Ubuntu Lucid, Oneiric, and Debian 6.0.3 prevent system POST once installed

2013-06-25 Thread Michael Lueck
@Phillip #9

Thank you for following up on this case.

What ever partitioner the Ubuntu LiveCD GUI installer uses to partition
the disk made a partition table which was incompatible with the latest
BIOS available from Intel for the motherboard in this system. Placing
the hard disk drive into a system with older Intel motherboard (also
with latest available BIOS for that motherboard) would POST and boot
properly.

I have since migrated this troublesome system to Xubuntu 12.04, and that
LiveCD installed BEAUTIFULLY on a brand new blank hard disk drive.

So unless a different partitioner is used between the Ubuntu and Xubuntu
LiveCD's, then this problem is resolved by the code in 12.04.

In the case Ubuntu and Xubuntu use a different partitioner, then my
success with Xubuntu 12.04 is irrelevant.

@nobuto: Thank you for sharing your steps to success. The apt-get

[Bug 585910] Re: [Upstream] Impress Font fuzzy in presentation mode when Use hardware acceleration enabled

2013-01-27 Thread Michael Lueck
Greetings Steve,

This evening I attempted to get it tested on my Xubuntu 12.04 x64
system. I ran into a snag.

I suspect what Aptitude was telling me is that the package python-uno
needs to also be updated and was not provided. Following is a text
screen dump of the dependency tangle. I had only left all of the
libreoffice* packages enabled to be upgraded to the test release.

Please advise how I should proceed in this case.

Sincerely,
Michael

[Bug 600603] Re: Skyrocket screen saver failing to start, screen dims, then pops back to 100% normal brightness

2012-12-28 Thread Michael Lueck
I was able to reproduce these odd behaviors with Xubuntu 12.04 x64.
Therefor it is probably not something Gnome specific as it happens with
Xcfe as well.

I have not installed Virtual Box on this system yet. So that rules out
all VM involvement.

I did a bit of research. These rss-glx screen savers seem to come from
Terence Welsh / Really Slick. I have contacted him directly, referencing
this support thread.

[Bug 874698] Re: Ubuntu Lucid, Oneiric, and Debian 6.0.3 prevent system POST once installed

2012-11-23 Thread Michael Lueck
I was able to load a blank hard drive successfully in this same system
with XUbuntu 12.04.1 x64 edition. I did not have to partition the drive
with Ubuntu 9.04 like I had to when loading 10.04 LTS.

I suppose it to be a bug in the specified editions of Linux around the
time of release of 10.04 LTS. Fortunately it seems to have been
corrected in the next LTS release of Ubuntu.

[Bug 645211] Re: USB HDD and Flash Drives no longer recognized

2012-04-25 Thread Michael Lueck
@Christopher,

I do not have capabilities to test the latest Ubuntu on our production
servers. I will not be upgrading production servers until well after
12.04 LTS releases stable.

As indicated in this dupe report:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/625134

Upgrading to Ubuntu 10.10 resolved the problem for the OP, per post #3
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/625134/comments/3

So already it was corrected in the 10.10 kernel tree.

What ever the fix is it has never been identified and merged into the
10.04 LTS kernel tree.

Could you please put this bug report back to Confirmed against the
10.04 LTS version tree?

If there is a 10.04 LTS kernel build already prepared that I should
test, please indicate so in a reply. I have tested other 10.04 kernel
fixes already and the fixes have been distributed to production
machines... so I am aware of how to do so. I recall different
instructions in that case than KernelMainlineBuilds, however.

Thank you!

[Bug 645211] Re: USB HDD and Flash Drives no longer recognized

2012-04-08 Thread Michael Lueck
FYI, this is still an issue with the current 10.04 LTS x86 PAE kernel
build.

Linux ldslnx01 2.6.32-40-generic-pae #87-Ubuntu SMP Mon Mar 5 21:44:34

I still must run my fixext_backup.sh script to get the USB HDD to attach
via the USB 2.0 controller.

Any suggestions what is still broken in the 10.04 kernel?

[Bug 585910] Re: [Upstream] Impress Font fuzzy in presentation mode when Use hardware acceleration enabled

2012-01-27 Thread Michael Lueck
@Christopher,

??? I am on Ubuntu Linux 10.04 x64, not Vista. Gee that is great
that it is unreproducible with Vista.

Meanwhile I have switched my machines all to LibreOffice via the PPA
instructions found here:
http://www.ubuntugeek.com/install-libreoffice-in-ubuntu-11-0410-1010-04-using-ppa.html

Yes I still needed to disable the acceleration to not have the font go
fuzzy with LibreOffice.

Please advise how I may assist in this matter. Thank you! :-)

[Bug 507499] Re: All created pdf file have the same name

2011-11-18 Thread Michael Lueck
My system is currently running with package: 2011-10-11 04:10 cups-
pdf_2.5.0-17ubuntu1~lucid1_amd64.deb

I do not see unique filenames in the created PDF's.

I changed my configuration per the OP's suggestion and now at least get
the job number in the PDF filename.

Therefor I can not confirm what ever fix was suppose to have been sent
out back on the 7th of this month.

Please help me understand what is going on with this bug report / fix.
Thanks!

[Bug 507499] Re: All created pdf file have the same name

2011-11-18 Thread Michael Lueck
Greetings Martin-Éric,

Per the bug title All created pdf file have the same name... I thought
fixed would mean that jobs now are given unique names.

Thank you for clarifying what actually was fixed. I was expecting
something unique in the filename such as the job number. I thought I was
seeing the document title all along... printing several documents from
the same program would end up trouncing files silently.

I will continue to manually configure cups-pdf per the OP's suggestion:
TitlePref 1 as that is the most useful configuration in my case.

[Bug 507499] Re: All created pdf file have the same name

2011-11-15 Thread Michael Lueck
I just finally upgraded to 10.04.3 x64 edition a few weeks ago.

I had forgotten what I did to generate unique filenames in PDF files.

The default behavior is to still not put the job number in the filename.

I finally found this old bug report. Appears the fix has been already
distributed.

Since I am not seeing unique filenames (at least I do not think so as I
do not see the job number in the filenames) then what fix was intended?
TIA!

[Bug 874698] Re: Ubuntu Lucid and Oneiric prevents system POST once installed

2011-10-23 Thread Michael Lueck
An associate I work with was able to correctly identify the trouble with
loads of Lucid, Oneiric, and the latest Debian. Turns out there is a HDD
geometry incompatibility with these newer distros.

The work-around that masked the situation was to partition the blank
drive with Ubuntu 9.04, then reboot to 10.04.3, specify the mount points
for the existing partitions, and thus arrive at success.

In my mind, it is absolutely unacceptable for a modern Linux distro to
mess up the HDD geometry / partitioning such that at system will no
longer POST properly! I ended up RMA'ing a perfectly good / new HDD back
to the manufacturer!! Not cool!!! :-|

Reclassifying this report against fdisk and not grub2.

[Bug 874698] Re: Ubuntu Lucid, Oneiric, and Debian 6.0.3 prevent system POST once installed

2011-10-23 Thread Michael Lueck
The HDD BIOS settings in my computer are as follows:

ATA/IDE ModeNative (can not change this)
Configure SATA As AHCI
S.M.A.R.T. Enabled
SATA 1 - 4 They just autodetect - can not even arrow to these,
cursor position skips over them
Hard Disk Pre-Delay 0

In order to be able to change the ATA/IDE Mode, I needed to adjust the
AHCI mode down to IDE, then I am able to adjust the ATA/IDE Mode setting
and select between Native and Legacy.

None of the settings allow for manual adjustment of the drive geometry
settings. All possible modes the BIOS support always force auto-detect
of the geometry details.

[Bug 874698] Re: Ubuntu Lucid and Oneiric prevents system POST once installed

2011-10-22 Thread Michael Lueck
I was able to clean load 10.04.3 x64 from the LiveCD onto my machine, as
usual no POST once loaded.

Then I took the drive to the P4/945 based system, installed Lilo, got
that configured. I needed to update /etc/fstab back to using /dev
devices and not referring to partitions by their UUID. Then it still
wanted to put Lilo on the partition, not on the drive. So hand tweaked
/etc/lilo.conf just a bit, and was successful with Lilo.

Next I purged off the two Grub packages.

Finally I took the drive back to my computer... and still will not POST
with the 10.04 drive in it. So I guess Grub2 is really not to blame.
What else could it be, though?

Any suggestions of what to try next?

[Bug 874698] [NEW] Ubuntu Lucid prevents system POST once installed

2011-10-14 Thread Michael Lueck
Public bug reported:

My trusty main Linux machine, still loaded with Ubuntu 9.04 x86.

Intel DG33BUC motherboard, latest BIOS rev
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8500

So to upgrade, I purchased a new drive:

Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.C 0F10383 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s
3.5 Internal Hard Drive

BIOS saw the drive fine, Ubuntu 10.04.3 x64 boots / installed smoothly

Eject the CD, reboot, system WILL NOT POST! I see the nVidia BIOS
screen, then blacks out, loan cursor at the top of the screen, FDD light
stuck on. The cursor is at the top of the screen in that position PRIOR
to the Intel splash screen coming on. Thus I know that POST has been
halted.

Switch drives back to the 9.04 drive, system boots fine. Switch back,
same symptoms.

Same thing with Ubuntu 10.04.3 x86.

Using another computer with Intel D945GNTL MB and Intel P4 631 CPU boots
Lucid perfectly fine as installed on the DG33BUC system. So using that
system, a disk erase / wipe utility to begin erasing the drive, and
THEN the DG33BUC will POST again with the drive installed in it.

What does Ubuntu 10.04.3 both x86 and x64 do that is so nasty so as to
prevent POST in an Intel DG33BUC based system?

** Affects: grub2 (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 486443] Re: [upstream] Can not save files to NAS cifs - needs nobrl or disable locking

Depends: libreoffice-report-builder-bin but it is not going to be

This is after it comes up with an additional changes dialog stating that
OpenOffice related packages will be removed.

So, that must not be complete steps to transition form OO to LO. Could

Bug #586438
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/586438

I removed the nobrl option from my mount commands

I logged off all mounts / logged back on

I can open files on the Samba server successfully, I can SaveAs creating
new copies of files, and I can successfully open the new copies.

I think this one is confirmed fixed with 10.04 Lucid and LibraOffice
installed via the instructions in #18

[Bug 313792] Re: VNC protocol greyed out in Terminal Server

2011-08-14 Thread Michael Lueck
@Jeremy #5:

It is NOT an update which solved this problem, it is the addition of a
package which was not in the suggested list in the tsclient package.
IT SHOULD BE LISTED AS A SUGGESTION! Otherwise people have no way of
knowing why tsclient has the VNC protocol grayed out.

Marking back to Confirmed.

[Bug 313792] Re: VNC protocol greyed out in Terminal Server

2011-08-14 Thread Michael Lueck
Thank you for the addl explanation. I am contently running 10.04 LTS.

I liked tsclient as it did not waste screen real estate when connecting
to remote systems. Vinagre wastes a bit more space, but has the C-A-D
capability which comes in handy on Windows hosts. I use them both.

[Bug 709188] Re: Samba in Lucid upgrade killed Envelope Feeder on HP LJ4000 printer

2011-08-12 Thread Michael Lueck
Thanks, I flushed out the previous PPA's and added that one. I see it
now.

The samba package depends on:

* samba depends on libwbclient0 (= 2:3.5.8~dfsg-1ubuntu2.1~lucid~ppa1)

Which libwbclient0 is not on our servers. Did you build your package
some other way than the official Ubuntu 10.04 ones?

[Bug 709188] Re: Samba in Lucid upgrade killed Envelope Feeder on HP LJ4000 printer

2011-08-12 Thread Michael Lueck
All right, I got the dependencies happy finally. Pulled down the
following packages:

libpam-smbpass_2%3a3.5.8~dfsg-1ubuntu2.1~lucid~ppa1_i386.deb
samba_2%3a3.5.8~dfsg-1ubuntu2.1~lucid~ppa1_i386.deb
samba-common_2%3a3.5.8~dfsg-1ubuntu2.1~lucid~ppa1_all.deb
samba-common-bin_2%3a3.5.8~dfsg-1ubuntu2.1~lucid~ppa1_i386.deb
libwbclient0_2%3a3.5.8~dfsg-1ubuntu2.1~lucid~ppa1_i386.deb

I then booted up a WinXP machine, started Windows Explorer \ Printers
and Faxes on our Samba server \ properties of the three LJ4000 drivers.

As usual, the Envelope Feeder check box will not stay checked on the PCL
5e and PCL 6 drivers. I check the box and the Apply button does not
un-gray ack'ing that a change has been made which is possible to Apply /
Save.

Do you think the uploaded drivers might have been corrupted by the
former Samba build? Shall I go through the purge Point-n-Print drivers
process and re-upload them?

I checked back this evening on this topic. Now I see Samba package files

However Samba does not show up here:

So not a surprise that I am not offered to move to that build of Samba.

More assistance please.

2011-05-10 Thread Michael Lueck
Suggestion noted how to handle responding to a developer question. I had
no idea that Incomplete had a timer ticking.

BTW: Is there a best place to install Ubuntu Lucid (10.04) packages of
Samba higher than the stable release maintained for Lucid? Perhaps this
is fixed by a higher release of Samba.

In the past when I started with Samba I was using Debian Sarge. I
installed Samba from the official Samba repo. However, I have only used
official Ubuntu packages since switching to Ubuntu. Thus since switching
to Ubuntu I sort of feel out of the loop with what developments Samba
has brewing.

taking a shot at updating the tags on this bug report. Hopefully soon
these new Lucid kernels will be released, and this problem will fade
into memories... :-)

[Bug 692848] Re: Regression between 2.6.32-27 and 2.6.32-26 xfsdump SGI_FS_BULKSTAT errno = 22

2011-03-18 Thread Michael Lueck
Greetings Martin, Thank you for this invitation. This morning I followed
the step in the documentation you posted a link to. I do not see an
updated kernel version queue up for installation. I suppose that is to
be expected as I only have the -26 kernel installed.

Manually looking through (in aptitude) I do see higher kernel versions.
Which one should I chose to install as I am currently running:

linux-image-2.6.32-26-generic-pae in the x86 architecture.

Thanks!

[Bug 518393] Re: Gtinydns id not created, but two other id's created

2011-03-15 Thread Michael Lueck
Yes the tinydns component of djbdns needs that specific ID.

Per DJB (the author) three ID's are needed for a basic installation of
djbns.

Johannes Hessellund pointed out that a fourth ID is needed for an
optional step in the set up of djbdns, so I added that ID as well, and
references the URL's to DJB's documentation where both are specified.

I have documented my steps of the basic installation using the Ubuntu packages
rather than compiling from source here:
http://www.lueckdatasystems.com/HOW-TO_Basic_installation_of_Daniel_J_Bernstein_djbdns_TinyDNS_on_Ubuntu_Linux

If not in the djbdns package, then in the dnscache-run package. Those
are the only two packages I must add to a system in order to set up a
basic djbdns implementation. (Yes, those two drag on dependencies as
well.)

Aaahhh, the binary that the Gtinydns ID is passed in as an arg to comes
from the djbdns package, not the dnscache-run package. So yes, I would
think at least the original three I proposed need to be added by djbdns.

And the same is true for the axfrdns account, the binary that needs it
also comes with djbdns and not a separate package. I just have never
needed that one, aparently Johannes Hessellund has.

[Bug 709188] Re: Samba in Lucid upgrade killed Envelope Feeder on HP LJ4000 printer

2011-03-10 Thread Michael Lueck
All right, I retested this via testing Samba Port based printing which I
used until SpoolSS / Point-n-Print was not working properly in Samba,
back in v 3.0.2 time frame. That works properly allowing the check boxes
/ selection to enable the Envelope Feeder option to be active.

I was able to print a COM10 envelope from WordPerfect and it was pulled
correctly from the Envelope Feeder.

Port based printing is where you go to the ports tab of the printer
properties, add a port, and fill in the UNC path to the printer resource
on the Samba server.

So I believe this is specifically a problem with storing the printer
driver on the Samba server via Point-n-Print and printing via SpoolSS.
That would also tie in with check boxes not staying checked as the idea
behind Point-n-Print is for administrators to be able to publish
printers and pre-configure the driver for use with that SPECIFIC printer
and its capabilities.

issue.

Could someone please review my patch and check it in. That would be
appreciated! :-)

[Bug 709188] Re: Samba in Lucid upgrade killed Envelope Feeder on HP LJ4000 printer

2011-03-09 Thread Michael Lueck
@Tim: The only application I know of which is able to comprehend the
envelope feeder on the printer is WordPerfect which is a Windows
application.

We run Ubuntu Server edition on our servers, no GUI, no nothing!

Yes my workstation runs Ubuntu Desktop edition (9.04 still as I have one
application dependent on 9.04 code).

Likewise I am printing directly to CUPS and having much better success.
Print jobs from Firefox went to never-never land while print jobs from
Thunderbird (2.x) would print. Since switching to direct to CUPS
printing Firefox is able to print. However that was broken even when the
server was running 9.04. I have since upgraded it to 10.04 LTS.

And it is not only the envelope feeder which got killed by the upgrade
form 9.04 - 10.04. I quote: The PCL 5e and PCL 6 drivers print COM10
envelopes on plain paper from the tray, and they do not even rotate the
text 90'.

So Samba MUST be doing more than merely spooling print data headed to
CUPS. But it is coming from Windows... how much detail could Samba
possibly figure out about the print job?!?! I would think Samba merely
spools data to CUPS, but apparently not the case.

One thing which I just realized, I have not tried to connect with
Windows to the print queues on Samba without using the Point-n-Print
uploaded drivers. I will try to work up a test environment to test that
scenario. Specifically, still printing through Samba but not make use of
the driver already uploaded to the server.

[Bug 692848] Re: Regression between 2.6.32-27 and 2.6.32-26 xfsdump SGI_FS_BULKSTAT errno = 22

2011-03-03 Thread Michael Lueck
Thank you so much Stefan!

I switched over 100% to Ubuntu with 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) and XFS has been
very stable since then. (Other than 7.10 which was the worst release
ever, and I never did get a 7.10 box to production state!)

What about maverick (10.10) and also natty? Are these versions also
affected?

As I am sticking with the -26 kernel, none of my servers which run
apticron are nagging me for a kernel update. I suppose -26 is too far
back and that is the reason I do not get notified. Could someone please
attach a comment to this bug report when the new kernel build which
includes this fix actually gets distributed so that I may update our
systems? Thank you!

[Bug 709188] Re: Samba in Lucid upgrade killed Envelope Feeder on HP LJ4000 printer

2011-03-01 Thread Michael Lueck
Aaahhh, excuse me, Chuck Short: How could this possibly be CUPS which is
causing these problems? The workstations print to Samba, which in turn
prints through CUPS. CUPS direct printing from Windows workstations
works. CUPS does not get involved until the print job reaches the
server, however we are having difficulty getting the driver to keep the
appropriate option check boxes when using Samba for Point-n-Print, which
CUPS has nothing to do with.

So how could it NOT be Samba which is causing the trouble?

[Bug 692848] Re: Regression between 2.6.32-27 and 2.6.32-26 xfsdump SGI_FS_BULKSTAT errno = 22

2011-02-22 Thread Michael Lueck
@Stefan #8, On our server which I first saw the crash on, only three out
of the eight or so xfsdump backups regularly scheduled caused this
crash. The others all backed up successfully. The dump I originally
started this case with actually produced a partial backup size. The
other two backup jobs resulted in 0 length dump files. Thus I decided to
focus on the backup job which resulted in some size at all.

I could boot from the -26 kernel build and get 100% success backing up.
Reboot to the -27 kernel, xfsdump crashes. The crashing has persisted
into the -28 kernel build. For now, -26 is where we must stay.

Getting no responses here, I referenced this bug report with a note to
the XFS developer list. Shortly some xfs chances were identified as
being done for the -27 kernel, that one was suspected as having gotten
overlooked when xfs code changes were merged into the Ubuntu Lucid code.

The thread on the xfs developer list has fallen silent, and now progress
has been made on this bug report.
