[Bug 380665] Re: straight line upper-left corner to pointer

2009-12-07 Thread Michael Monreal
The patch helps, a bit... but I just tried using gromit with a wiimote
and got this strange result. All those lines are in fact only dots I
drew, but those dots get extended in a certain direction. I guess this
is the point the mouse was when gromit was activated?

[Bug 296867] Re: empathy needs to support OTR encryption

2009-10-29 Thread Michael Monreal
I don't agree that this has the same importance as https in browsers
(Pidgin does _not_ support OTR out of the box and the devs even refused
to pull in the plugin). Still I think the request is reasonable and
Empathy should support OTR either natively or using a plugin (which
would require a plugin system first...)

[Bug 379971] [NEW] Turkish is always listed in GTK apps even when not installed

2009-05-24 Thread Michael Monreal
Public bug reported:

Not sure if this is a bug in aspell, gtkspell or some other package but
GTK apps like Evolution and Empathy always show "Turkish" as one of the
available languages to spellcheck, even if only other dicts are
installed.

I have tested the same on Fedora 11 and I do not see the bug there.

[Bug 303146] [NEW] Jockey does not provide a way to install drivers for GF1 and GF4 cards

2008-11-28 Thread Michael Monreal
Public bug reported:

Jockey lets me install the nvidia drivers just fine for a GeForce6 card
(6600 GT) but does not list anything on the same system with either a
GeForce 1 DDR or GeForce 4 4600 card.

The GF1 should be supported by the legacy driver (still used it on hardy
with the legacy driver)

The GF4 should work with the normal driver (not the new one).

The dialog just says that the system is not using proprietary drivers
and has two empty boxes below it.

[Bug 292228] [NEW] Should depend on foomatic-filters

2008-11-01 Thread Michael Monreal
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: foo2zjs

I recently installed a minimalistic ubuntu on my girlfriend's laptop.
She has a CLJ 1600 at home, which is shared by a windows PC. She managed
to setup it correctly with system-config-printer but printing failed
without any meaningful error message. Debugging the problem I found CUPS
complaing about foomatic-rip not being available. Installing foomatic-
filters solved this problem.

Now I wonder if the foo2zjs package should depend on foomatic-filters,
as it surely does not work without it?

2008-10-06 Thread Michael Monreal
Ok I set the console-setup to the same as above but replaced the Evdev
keyboard with a generic 105 intl one. This seems to work fine on the
console now.

In GNOME, I currently also have the generic 105-key intl one set (using
germany eliminate dead keys layout) and it also works fine.

I have not, however, configured any keyboard in xorg.conf, is that
correct?

[Bug 277156] [NEW] Hide KNetAttach launcher in GNOME

2008-10-02 Thread Michael Monreal

When installing any KDE4 app, you will also need to install the kdebase-

[Bug 277034] [NEW] Evdev keyboard setting not working correctly

2008-10-02 Thread Michael Monreal
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xkeyboard-config

I tested the latest alpha release because of the input-hotplug stuff
(and possible problems) mentioned here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/alpha6

What I found is that the keyboard did not work out of the box but that
I can get it to work properly (on GNOME), but not if I follow the
official instructions. Here's what I did:

$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-setup

Keyboard model: Evdev-managed keyboard
Origin of the keyboard: Germany
Keyboard layout:Germany - Eliminate dead keys
AltGr key replacement: Right Alt
Compose key:No compose key
Encoding: UTF-8
# Latin1 and Latin5 - western Europe and Turkic languages
Console font: VGA 16

The only thing I'm not 100% sure about is the evdev- managed keyboard
model, do I need to set this here too? The rest should be fine.

In GNOME I set "evdev managed keyboard" and the layout "Germany
eliminate dead keys". Result: some keys not working. Those include ^, ~,
`, '. I first thought the 3rd level modifier was not working but I could
use @ and €, and ^ is first level for example. So I experimented a bit
and found when I set the keyboard to the 105intl one instead of generic-
evdev it works perfectly in GNOME.

On the console however, it does not. I cannot type ^ or ~ or @ or €. The
3rd level modifier seems to be completely dead. Well, sometimes it even
moves the cursor one character to the left before it inserts the 1st
level character of a given key (for ~ I get "+" for example). I
have tried some other settings but have not yet found one that works
correctly on the console.

Please first take a look at my console-setup config above and clarify if
"Evdev-managed keyboard" is the right model.

[Bug 206568] Re: network manager editor does update the keyring

2008-10-01 Thread Michael Monreal
Well, "metoo" after installing a new system using the intrepid alpha6.
Copied my old keyring over, no joy as the name under which the key is
stored has changed from NM 0.6-NM0.7. Nice... I guess this will affect
any user.

Stupid workaround of the day: get opensuse 11 (live cd), connect to the
wlan(s) you use, copy the keyring to ubuntu => works

So other distributions manage to ship a non-broken NM, I hope Intrepid
will not ship broken!

2008-09-20 Thread Michael Monreal
I had the "pleasure" to work on the Inspiron 3500 of my gf today. Same
problem as described here with Ubuntu 8.04.1.

However, digging around I got it working.

1.) some mail from these http://www.mail-archive.com/search?q=inspiron
3500&[EMAIL PROTECTED]&start=0 seems to suggest that the
Inspiron 3500's NM256 is actually no proper NM256. It seems to be
missing AC'97 and use a Crystal chip.

2.) The solution posted here works for me:

[Bug 243957] Re: Some text in intrepid's new default theme is unreadable

2008-06-30 Thread Michael Monreal
I noticed the problem in firefox, too. Also note the brown area to the
side of web entries, this will look bad in both gecko 1.9 and webkit
apps.

Even with those bugs fixed the new theme is unusable for me on my
laptop. It looks about usable on the desktop, but the laptop screen has
less contrast and my eyes start hurting after looking at the white-font-
on-dark-brown for a while. Bright themes like the SuSE default theme
work much better on this screen. I would think twice before making
something like this default for the release...

Well... I just set up a test partition with Intrepid and found myself in
the same situation as many users on this bug: my user is added to the
right group, I logged out and back in, virt-manager works but I can't
press "+ add" to add new virtual networks unless I run as root. From
what I understand the "virt-manager -c qemu:///system" is no longer
necessary as it seems to be the default, but I tried never the less and
it does not make a difference. If I connect this, I see a "default"
network but I cannot edit it or add a new one. What do I need to do to
get this functionality?

No this does not only affect AWN. Open writer, minimize it and alt-tab.
You should see it (even better if you are using compiz). I don't know
what gtk_window_set_icon_name does under the hood but that would be the
right behavior. We have the required icons in hicolor/*/apps/* now, so
why not make good use of them?

I second this. Mime icons make only sense in multi-document apps. While you
could see OOo als multi-doc, as we have the app-(part) specific icons, let's
use those.

Inside OOo we already have a nicely sized mime icon for 16x16 toolbars,
providing the 22x22 (pr whatever the large toolbar is) should be
trivial.

[Bug 153755] Re: [Gutsy] Synaptic has different "main icon" instead of one

2008-06-16 Thread Michael Monreal
Ugh...

The problem here is that the icons should *not* be in the tangerine
theme. Putting them there means the right icons will show up (in the
menus) for users of a) the tangerine theme and b) the human theme. But
all other users (using gnome-icon-theme, tango-icon-theme or any other
theme not based on tangerine) will never see the icon.

The solution is to either use icon spec names or let the synaptic
package install the icon into hicolor, where every theme can access it.
Is there a reason why you don't want to use the "system-software-
install" icon provided by the icon spec? There's mo spec name for the
update properties icon so that has to be shipped with the update
manager's package.

Please, let's fix this bug.

- What are those openoffice24-* icons (in apps and mimetypes) shipped

[Bug 237488] [NEW] Let packages add user privilege templates

2008-06-04 Thread Michael Monreal
Public bug reported:

When installing fuse packages like sshfs you will get a message telling
you that you have to give the user special permissions to use fuse (you
have to add the user to the fuse group).

The user management tool has a "user privileges" tab. It would be nice
if packages like fuse could add "templates" like "Use FUSE mounts" which
then would add the user to a given group.

[If fuse is already a default system group, perhaps it would be easier
to add the "Use FUSE mounts" privilege setting to the dialog
unconditionally]

Luca: I think those changes you linked *caused* the problem here. Or,
well, partly. The problem is that the deb package was never updated to
also include and install the hicolor app icons transmission now
installs.

Others: I'm not very familiar with .debs, but does the patch above does
just this: add the icons installed to /usr/share/icons/hicolor/* to the
package? If yes, this is the right fix and it would be great to see it
accepted.

Note: currently the menu launchers look bad because of the same thing,
having the other icon sizes would fix this, too.

[Bug 172490] Re: system-config-printer.py Toolbar Icon Metaphor

2008-05-25 Thread Michael Monreal
After looking at the app itself I think we could get away easy by just
using the list-add icon for "New Printer" (as currently used in the menu
already). I would also rename this action to "Add Printer" and move it
out of the Edit menu to a "Printers" menu, which would replace "File".

As for "New Class", I would rename "Class" to "Group" in the whole UI
and also move it to the "Printers" menu as "Group Printers" as suggested
by Jones. Do we really need a toolbar button for this? If no, the menu
entry could surely live without an icon. If yes, the icon could show two
printers with some colored outline around them, showing the grouping.

[Bug 227505] [NEW] Not restoring volume levels

2008-05-06 Thread Michael Monreal
Public bug reported:

For some time now after each boot I have to manually unmute master and
pcm and set the volume level because Ubuntu does not seem to restore the
settings. Initially I thought this was due to my new usb webcam (which
also has a mic) but now I tested without the cam plugged and same
problem, so it has to be a change introduced in a recent (2-3 month)
kernel module updates or alsa tools.

I now found out that I can restore the volume/mute state "manually" with
"alsactl restore" (which I put into my gnome session) but I guess just
this *should* be run by the system at some point?

Note: I do not use pulseaudio.

2008-05-06 Thread Michael Monreal
>> the menu item is easy enough to add using the menu editor if you need

Sebastien, "NotShowIn=GNOME;" is used in the .desktop file. This means

a) it will show up in other DEs. Is this what you want?
b) it does _not_ show up as a disabled launcher in Alacarte for those of us who
want to re-enable it. I think it would need the NoDisplay=true entry for this
to work?

[Bug 153350] Re: prism54 does not work - need to use p54pci and p54common

2007-10-21 Thread Michael Monreal
I think I am seeing the same problem with my sister's PC.

It is using one of those softmac cards and Gusty tries to load the old
prism54 module. dmesg says "irq line busy", this is normal with this
driver. I then blacklisted the prism54 driver and on the next boot it
loaded another driver (prism54pci or something) which worked without a
problem then.

How do you plan do fix this? Doesn't the new driver also support the old
"hard" mac cards?

[Bug 40521] Re: Tango Artwork

2007-08-25 Thread Michael Monreal
Wrong!

1.) gnome-icon-theme also follows tango guidelines

2.) network manager installs it's current set of icons to hicolor/, and
that is where those tango icons should be put instead. This way, all
themes can inherit the tango icons. I don't really know why this is not
being done upstream, but perhaps RedHat doesn't want those icons in SVN.
Anyway, for themes like GNOME, Tango, Tangerine and Human, those icons
would be a great improvement.

[Bug 111454] Insane CPU usage with compiz

2007-05-01 Thread Michael Monreal
Public bug reported:

I installed Ubuntu Feisty on my old PC which is now used by my sister.
Everything worked great until I enabled desktop effects (compiz). Things
went very laggy, like windows only redrawing 1-2 times when moved
across the screen. This was strange, as I had compiz working great
previously!

I checked "top" and found the reason: after starting compiz (like that:
compiz --replace gconf) the evoltution-data-server-2.10 process uses up
about 60% of the CPU, constantly! Killing that process or removing the
"Evolution Alarm" from the session (and not starting evolution at all)
fixes the problem!

So I suppose somethings very woring with eds on feisty.

For reference, I use the nvidia-glx driver shipping with feisty on a
geforce4 card.

[Bug 80605] TLS/NTPL Problem with Edgy initrd and Xen

2007-01-19 Thread Michael Monreal
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: initramfs-tools

When starting Xen 3.0.4 domains (both dom0 and domU) on Edgy I see the
following warning:

 ***
 ***
** WARNING: Currently emulating unsupported memory accesses **
** in /lib/tls glibc libraries. The emulation is**
** slow. To ensure full performance you should **
 ** install a 'xen-friendly' (nosegneg) version of **
** the library, or disable tls support by executing **
** the following as root: **
 ** mv /lib/tls /lib/tls.disabled**
 ** Offending process: init (pid=693) **
 ***

I installed libc6-xen to get rid of this (it should provide the nosegneg
stuff) but it didn't work. I then executed the described command but
that too didn't fix the problem. Ilooked a bit deeper into what's
causing this and it seems to be a problem with the initrd: if I boot a
domU system without the initrd it will naturalyl not be able to use
features like ext3 filesystem but the warning is gone.

I don't really know what the cause is but it seems to be something with
the libc that is used in the ramdisk. Can someone tell me more and
perhaps have an Idea how to fix this?

[Bug 61176] Re: Inconsistent use of Icons

2006-09-19 Thread Michael Monreal
I'm a big fan of the tango project, I really like the guidelines and the
resulting icons. Tango icon theme is really nice, so was Tangerine. And
the new Gnome icon theme is even better. So I'm all for getting more of
the deskop tangofied.

BUT: I never understood why tango was used as a fallback for human, the
two styles doen't fit each other. Ubuntu having it's own visual
identity, blah blah... yeah I can understand that but the Human theme is
miles behind both tango-icon-theme and gnome-icon-theme... and it's not
following the tango guidlines. Do you really plan to do Human icons for
all those apps which have tango themes right now like (as travis
mentioned) Gimp or OOo?

IMHO Ubuntu would do best with the following: reuse Human again for edgy
but drop it after that release in favour of a small add-on icon theme
which inherits most icosn from the default gnome theme. This way ubuntu
could get its identity (color of folders etc) but still fit with the
majority of upstream artwork.
