[Bug 1956821] Re: System hangs on reboot and shutdown

2022-01-19 Thread Michael Mulqueen
I'm experiencing the same issue on GNU/Linux 5.13.0-27-generic x86_64

Hardware is ASUS PN50-E1 / AMD Ryzen 7 4700U with Radeon Graphics

I've been unable to find anything useful in the systemd journal with log
levels for systemd and udev both at 9 - the problem seems to be after
the journal stops. During the stuck shutdown process, Alt+SysRq+B works
and forces a reboot.

I do not encounter the same issue with 5.11.0.27-generic (HWE) nor with
5.4.0.96-generic (latest non-HWE).

Is a lack of testing for trusty going to prevent a patch for
xenial/artful? We don't have any machines on trusty to test it with, but
if it's going to block the whole patch then we might be able to wipe an
affected machine and install trusty to test it.

Re: [Bug 643822] Re: System freezes unless mouse/keyboard constantly used

2010-12-02 Thread Michael Mulqueen
@Rüdiger, I don't really understand it enough to explain it, but I
understand the general gist of it. This bug is related to the way that
the kernel keeps time. The way the kernel used to work (by default)
was by ticking. The new way is tickless. nohz=on is tickless, nohz=off
is tickful. I won't even try to explain it. Some explanation here that
was published when it was added to the kernel:

@Rüdiger, have you tried my workaround as mentioned in the above
comments? If so, did it work? Also, are you experiencing any problems
with wireless networking, because I am and I'm wondering whether there
is any connection between this bug and it.

Regards,
Mike (original submitter)

2010/11/6 Rüdiger Kupper ruediger.kupper+launch...@gmail.com:
I confirm this problem on an ASUS Notebook. It behaves exactly as described
in #1. Something stops basically all processing until the mouse is moved or
any key hit. I find myself hitting Shift constantly just to keep things
 going.
I confirm that it's very unspecific and seems to affect everything. It has a
severe impact on the general usability of the computer.
The problem appeared after upgrade to Maverick. It was never present before.

Re: [Bug 631735] Re: Wireless is disabled on boot

2010-10-11 Thread Michael Mulqueen
In the end, I went back to the b43 driver. That _also_ has a bug in
it. Even after I have worked around that, I still have to right click
and enable wireless when I start each new session. Standby and
hibernation break the wireless (seemingly irreparably) and I have to
reboot.

The difference between your bug and my bug (or perhaps the way they
manifest themselves, they may still be the same) is that I couldn't
enable wireless, because it was greyed out.

Re: [Bug 643822] Re: System freezes unless mouse/keyboard constantly used

2010-09-22 Thread Michael Mulqueen
I've found a workaround. I did a lot of searching, looking for similar
problems and then tried about 15 different things, 2 worked.

If you use the kernel flag nolapic_timer, the problem goes away. A
proper solution still needs to be found though. The kernel flag
nohz=off also works, but it doesn't seem to play nicely with my
wireless networking.

To do this in the long term:

(Do all of these steps as root)

Open:
/etc/default/grup

Change:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash

To:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash nolapic_timer

Run:
update-grub

[Bug 643822] [NEW] System freezes unless mouse/keyboard constantly used

2010-09-20 Thread Michael Mulqueen
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Maverick (up-to-date with latest packages as of 19:25 GMT
September 20th)

Essentially, unless the keyboard or mouse is constantly in use, the
system freezes/locks up/appears to be doing nothing. As soon as the
keyboard is pressed or the mouse is moved, everything starts going
again.

Examples:
* System will never make it through boot process unless ctrl (or other) key is
held down, just hangs
* I'm watching a video, if I don't hold down a key, press a key every few
seconds or constantly move the mouse, then it will stop playing and the sound
will loop, playback resumes as normal as soon as I trigger an input again
* I'm running aptitude update, if I don't keep moving the mouse or whatever, it
will appear to stop doing anything (get stuck). I can't tell whether it is
doing nothing or just appearing to do nothing. Again, as soon as I trigger an
input again, everything starts back up (for a few seconds and then it stops
again, unless I keep triggering inputs)
* I'm shutting down, it won't ever get there unless I keep pressing/hold down
keys, it will just hang. I've left it all night and in the morning it's still
stuck at the same point. Hold down a key and off it goes again.

It affects everything, not just these things. These are just some of the
best examples. Freeze ups are not localised to one window, seems to
affect everything. I can't be sure, but I reckon it is probably doing
something funny with the hard disk when on battery mode (seems to be
spinning up and down more often). Hard disk partitions are all ext4,
both have plenty of free space.

It seems to have been a problem since I upgraded to Maverick a week or
two ago. But in the last day it has become more severe. Previously, it
only seemed to affect boot up and down, not it is affecting normal
desktop usage (like videos). May coincide with a recent update to
2.6.35-22 from 2.6.35-x. I have booted into 2.6.32-x instead and the
problem does not exist at all there. Definitely did not exist in Lucid
either. Definitely looks like a kernel issue based on that.

Hardware is Lenovo Ideapad S12 with Intel Atom processor and Intel
graphics.

This a big problem for me. It is making my computer almost unusable.
Please could someone look into this urgently.

Definitely sounds familiar. When this problem was happening to me but
was less severe, I was doing the pretty much the same.

Do you know whether this has been reported upstream to the kernel
developers?

I will contact the company that I bought my notebook from, they sell a
lot of linux devices and use them extensively themselves so they might
be able to help. I'll report back if I have any good news.

Right, just came back to my computer after leaving it idle for a
while, looked at the time on it, thought that it couldn't be right,
looked at my phone, knew it wasn't right. Ran ntpdate-debian to fix it
and to be sure. It was _40 minutes_ out. That shows that this isn't
just cosmetic. This is actually stopping the continuous execution of
processes (and ones as basic as time keeping processes).

[Bug 621927] Re: Embedded Terminal Emulator isn't giving a TERM variable

2010-09-09 Thread Michael Mulqueen
My understanding is that this is due to a change in behaviour in new
versions of libvte/python-vte. It used to provide the TERM variable, but
now it doesn't and so it's up to the application (guake, tilda etc.) to
provide it instead. I presume that this is an intentional change to
libvte.

As a horrible, quick and dirty fix.

From /usr/bin/guake (press Alt+F2, type gksudo gedit
/usr/bin/guake,press Enter to edit), change:

exec -a guake $PYTHON -OO $GUAKEPATH/guake.py $@

To:

exec -a guake $PYTHON -OO $GUAKEPATH/guake.py $@ -e export
TERM=xterm

Is guake still being maintained? because I'll fork the code base and
patch it properly myself if it is no longer being maintained.

[Bug 631717] [NEW] GDM login screen hangs unless mouse is moved

2010-09-06 Thread Michael Mulqueen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Ubuntu Maverick (10.10 development branch)
gdm 2.30.5-0ubuntu2

When gdm loads, it just displays the purple-y Ubuntu background until I
wiggle the mouse, and only then does it display the user selection
dialogue. In Lucid, the background would appear and the user selection
dialogue would follow almost immediately afterwards, with no mouse
stimulation.

Also, but perhaps unrelated, after authentication, the dialogue
disappears and it takes absolutely ages to progress from the purple-y
Ubuntu background to my logged in desktop (as in my user session doesn't
visibly start for ages).

[Bug 631735] [NEW] Wireless is disabled on boot

2010-09-06 Thread Michael Mulqueen
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Maverick
bcmwl-kernel-source 5.60.48.36+bdcom-0ubuntu5

When I boot and then log in, wireless does not connect. If I then use
nm-applet, I see that wireless is disabled and also impossible to enable
(greyed out).

The only way I have found to fix this is to open up jockey-gtk, remove
Broadcom STA and then activate Broadcom STA. This is forgotten after
every single boot, so I have to go through this 3 - 5 minute process
every time I boot if I want to access my wireless network.

I've tried rmmod-ing and then modprobe-ing wl as an alternative, but
that doesn't seem to do anything useful.

This is a regression compared to Lucid and Karmic. Wireless was flawless

I think it's a Broadcom chip connected via USB (it's inside the netbook,

Re: [Bug 308191] Re: Multi fingers touch doesn't be correctly recognized

Just confirming that this is still a problem for me on Lucid (no
multi-touch whatever I do). At least now though,
gnome-mouse-properties has 2 finger scroll greyed out. When I called
up gsynaptics, it had Enable Touchpad unchecked and checking it and
closing gsynaptics had no observable effects.

@Dana Goyette
I believe the synaptics driver has software emulation of multi touch
(for single touch devices), for some reason it isn't working on
certain pads. This is probably not because they were never supported,
because it seems that some people had it working on earlier versions
of Ubuntu.

The new versions really do a lot to make utf-8 work well with cheetah

Re: [Bug 308191] Re: Multi fingers touch doesn't be correctly recognized

2009-11-24 Thread Michael Mulqueen
I have just tried that workaround (the synclient ...MinZ=10 one) but
it doesn't work for me. The command executes fine, it just has no
effect, even if I fiddle with gnome-mouse-properties. I should add, my
settings are almost entirely the defaults if not entirely the
defaults. Perhaps this bug affects different touchpads in different
ways (my touchpad is an ALPS Glidepoint one), what is yours? Post a
copy of this command if possible:

xinput list | grep -i pointer

Regarding making a permanent change to the touchpad configuration: I'm
not sure in all honesty. I think you can specify it in xorg.conf
(although, by default X doesn't use a configuration file any more, but
it will read one if it exists). HAL is being depreciated, but to my
understanding, it is still in progress (with input devices still being
handled with HAL rather than udev) but by no means finished. This wiki
page provides some details:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Halsectomy

Out of interest, has anyone tried this with a different distribution?
(non-Debian derived or otherwise)

This bug doesn't seem to be getting that much developer attention, we
should consider raising this upstream (if it's not Debian/Ubuntu
specific).

[Bug 213140] Re: Problems maximizing Inkscape 0.46 on Ubuntu Hardy

2008-12-07 Thread Michael Mulqueen
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 168648 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/168648

The issue still exists in Intrepid. If Inkscape would remember that the
vertical toolbar wasn't docked then it wouldn't be such a problem.

Other programmes have very similar problems (to do with the resolution
being too small). I've seen it in Evolution, KmPlot, GIMP (less of a
problem though), compizconfig settings manager and others.

It'd be great to see this fixed.

[Bug 289316] [NEW] Warn when dvipng isn't installed (when user attempts to use formula plugin)

2008-10-25 Thread Michael Mulqueen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: zim

Preferably the user should be warned that dvipng is not installed if
they try to use the Formula Plugin rather than getting a massive log
file with no obvious indication of what's going wrong. Even a short and
specific error message would be useful. This kind of thing really
baffles people if they don't have a clue about possible problems.

At the very least dvipng should be listed as recommended in deb package.

sudo apt-get remove openoffice.org-gtk
... makes the problem go away but leaves openoffice dead-ugly.
Is there maybe a QT/KDE version you could use instead to make it un-ugly?

How could this have passed through to Gutsy when it was reported a month
before it's release?
Presumably because it's partly as a result of 3rd party themes that aren't
written properly and therefore they spent their time fixing more important
things...

[Bug 152484] Re: kdebase-workspace can not be installed

2007-10-14 Thread Michael Mulqueen
I'm having the same problem (I think). I believe the cause is that
kde4base is at version .93 but kdelibs5 is at .94 (which seems to have
the effect of kde4base depending upon libsoprano3 and kdelibs5, while at
the same time kdelibs5 depends upon libsoprano4. Libsoprano4 and
libsoprano3 conflict therefore making it all uninstallable). Presumably
the kde4base package just needs to be upgraded in the repository.
Hopefully someone will sort it out soon.
