[Bug 1093788] Re: X doesn't load after fglrx install

2020-06-01 Thread Michael Tsikerdekis
** Description changed:

It may be a duplicate but I haven't found anything similar. I am
reporting here since this is an ubuntu package problem although I have
tried the official stable and beta releases provided by AMD as well.

I installed fglrx and then reboot it but the system hangs.

I also tried using the command aticonfig --initial -f but again no
  effect.

I entered as root and used startx and here I provide the error log. It
seems that there is a problem with reading the VBIOS.

[Bug 1093795] Re: Backlight does not work on sony vaio sve1112

2020-05-27 Thread Michael Tsikerdekis
** Description changed:

Using the default ati open source driver hotkeys are not working, echo
commands are not working but files exist in sys/class/backlight.

I used acpi_backlight=vendor , legacy and also the
  video.use_bios_initial_backlight=0 with no effect.

Reverse mainline kernel version bisecting revealed the fix landed in the
transition from 3.6.11 raring to 3.7-rc1 quantal.

[Bug 1289977] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 Update breaks grub, resulting in error: symbol 'grub_term_highlight_color' not found

2014-05-30 Thread Michael Tsikerdekis
@robert-tindall I think you are definitely on to something. Your
suggestions did help although my circumstances differed.

I was running 14.04 with a downgraded version of grub due to this issue.
I decided to go ahead and do a dist-upgrade. After that I would this
error msg that everyone has been having (so basically no boot menu, no
options whatsover just straight to grub_rescue).

My laptop is a VAIO and does have EFI. Multiple restarts would still get
me to grub_rescue. Then I decided to use the assist button and select
load from USB (but I had no USB inserted). I got Operation system not
found!. Then I turned off my computer, turned it on again and suddenly
grub menu worked!!!

I got into ubuntu and I tried to dpgk-reconfigure grub-pc only to find
out that grub-pc was not installed and grub-efi was instead installed in
its place. So, I did a apt-get install grub-pc and it automatically
removed the grub-efi and install grub-pc.

Now, when I restarted everything worked fine BUT the moment I entered
windows and then restarted my computer again, I got the beautiful
grub_rescue screen. I bypassed it by using the asist button, booting
through a USB that does not exist and restarting.

From what I've seen, grub-pc or grub-efi doesn't make a difference on
the result. But, loading windows affects things. There is something
that happens when loading windows in my case at least that forces ubuntu
afterward to look for grub at the wrong place.

Any ideas on what may be the issue? I suspect that somehow MBR is
affected by Windows but in an UEFI computer I am not sure how that may
be,

[Bug 1289977] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 Update breaks grub, resulting in error: symbol 'grub_term_highlight_color' not found

2014-05-07 Thread Michael Tsikerdekis
@Scott you can find the old deb packages here:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/saucy/grub2

You will have to fix any dependencies but it's easy just download the files
needed. You may need to add Windows manually through editing
/etc/grub.d/40_custom
In my case I had to add this:
menuentry Windows 8 {
insmod part_gpt
insmod chain
set root='(hd0,gpt3)'
chainloader /EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bkpbootmgfw.efi
}

I am running UEFI system and that partition is the small one containing
that folder. Also I had to use that specific efi file instead of the
default bootmgfw.efi. The easiest way to figure out what works is to add
multiple entries on the 40_custom file with various settings and test
them. This will save you multiple reboots.

[Bug 1289977] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 Update breaks grub, resulting in error: symbol 'grub_term_highlight_color' not found

2014-05-06 Thread Michael Tsikerdekis
@Scott the only solution that worked for me was to actually install
specific deb packages for grub2 from the 13.10 version. See my earlier
post. the issue is that this fixes the problem but you cannot do a dist-
upgrade without upgrading grub. there are workarounds for this but still
it is a hassle.

2014-05-05 Thread Michael Tsikerdekis
So is there an actual solution to this? I am stuck with ubuntu 14.04
with a grub2 from 13.10 and I don't do dist-upgrades because the beta9
grub2 version does not recognize windows properly. Any solutions?

[Bug 1289977] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 Update breaks grub, resulting in error: symbol 'grub_term_highlight_color' not found

2014-04-18 Thread Michael Tsikerdekis
I managed to get it work. Have a look here for the solution:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/23164040/grub-2-cannot-find-efi-for-
windows/23164859

You will have to adapt your configuration to reflect your system's setup
but I've posted mine so you should have enough to get it work. You will
have to downgrade the files mentioned here by another user. Then an
additional step is needed to make Windows 8 (in my case work).

install a kernel from raring or will I break anything?

[Bug 1093795] Re: Backlight does not work on sony vaio sve1112

2012-12-27 Thread Michael Tsikerdekis
I just installed the raring kernel on my 12.10 quantal setup. The
brightness works on that kernel perfectly but I lost wireless
connectivity through the network manager. I have no problem if this is a
configuration problem and there is a network incompatibility with raring
kernels and quantal distros. Backlight though works.

What's next?

[Bug 1093795] Re: Backlight does not work on sony vaio sve1112

2012-12-27 Thread Michael Tsikerdekis
Done the bisect procedure for the packages found in
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.6.11-raring/

The change occurred in the transition from 3.6.11 raring to 3.7 raring.

3.7 raring works without any problems on my 12.10 install. I'll try
3.7-rc1 for quantal and post the results here.

[Bug 1093788] [NEW] X doesn't load after fglrx install

2012-12-26 Thread Michael Tsikerdekis
Public bug reported:

It may be a duplicate but I haven't found anything similar. I am
reporting here since this is an ubuntu package problem although I have
tried the official stable and beta releases provided by AMD as well.

I installed fglrx and then reboot it but the system hangs.

I also tried using the command aticonfig --initial -f but again no
effect.

I entered as root and used startx and here I provide the error log. It
seems that there is a problem with reading the VBIOS.

[Bug 775950] Re: fixing recursive fault but reboot is needed! upon boot (always reproducible on battery only, but sometimes on AC too)

2011-07-08 Thread Michael Tsikerdekis
I have the same exact problem on a sony vaio with a fresh wubi
installation of ubuntu. The AC power seems to play a critical role on
the occurrence of the error but also experienced the error every time
there was a first run for the kernel i.e. after wubi finished installing
i got the error, then powered off and on again and it was fine, then i
was prompted about updates and after i restarted again to load with a
new kernel i got the message again.

[Bug 433055] Re: 9.10 Internal Microphone Does not Work on Aspire One

2009-11-22 Thread Michael Tsikerdekis
Ok here is my lspci
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition
Audio Controller (rev 02)

I also think that i accidentally discovered something that might help
you tracking the problem. Except from skype mic which doesnt work i also
tried to fix my microphone for rosetta stone through wine. I am using
the latest compiled alsa but the default that linux had was returning
the same results.

So in my search for making the mic to work under wine i realized that
the problem is the same as skype. I installed the pulse audio volume
control and pulse audio device chooser. What i found was tha from the
pulse audio device chooser when i would open the sound monitor it would
show that its receiving sound from the mic while the pulse audio volume
control will show only i small steady signal of sound being received by
the mic.

I dont know how the programming code is for both of these utilities but
obviously if you can check how the device chooser works and gets the
sound the only thing need to do is fix the volume control and that's all
(in theory at least and in my mind)

Hope it helps

[Bug 296478] Re: coretemp doesn't support intel atom processors

2009-10-18 Thread Michael Tsikerdekis
Yes i agree that adding that to karmic should be easy although since 2.6.32
kernel has already the fix i dont see the point of patching an old kernel. They
can just add the new kernel as an official with the release or put it in the
backports.
Although i believe that it would be smarter to add it in the new release of
karmic since it would be a complete solution for all atom processors and it
will help in the sense that the karmic will be released as bug free.
Promotional-wise it would be better.

[Bug 398214] Re: Karmic Koala stopps dead after /scripts/init-bottom

2009-09-15 Thread Michael Tsikerdekis
i just did a dist-upgrade on karmic and i have the problem.
The solution above does not work.

I found out that if you use through group the init=/bin/bash and change the ro
option to rw you can have some short of a console to work with the filesystem.
When i tried to upgrade i had the error that initscripts have been kept back
and if i would try to force install then i have to lose all xorg packages!

[Bug 430272] Re: karmic boot hung after /scripts/init-bottom

2009-09-15 Thread Michael Tsikerdekis
I can confirm that the same thing happened to me. After before 1-2 hours i did
a dist-upgrade and system wont boot after reboot.
The system hangs after /scripts/init-bottom.

In my case i manage to login to the system by editing through grub and putting
rw instead of ro and init=/bin/bash
When i tried an apt-get upgrade the package initscripts has been kept back. if
i force install it the system ask me to remove almost all packages (gdm, ubuntu
desktop, etc)

The worst is that i can get to connect to the net so i have no idea how
am i going to fix that system failure.

A superblock for that kernel was f***ed so i booted with an older on did
an fsck and then rebooted.

I can verify that the system boots normally with the old kernel and the
latest one.

[Bug 364592] Re: [acer aspire one D150] ACPI lid events are broken

2009-09-11 Thread Michael Tsikerdekis
about the mic problem i have a post here that works for me. Although you have
to apply the same procedure everytime there is a kernel upgrade for ubuntu. But
its simple...
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=7445135postcount=17

Does anybody else keep having problems with 1.09 bios and fan noise? Even after
the upgrade the damn thing never goes completely off. Although it changes
states from slow to fast spinning it never goes totally off. And the fixes that
they have out for acer aspire is not for D150.
Anybody knows a way to fix this?

[Bug 420985] [NEW] pidgin cpu usage high

2009-08-29 Thread Michael Tsikerdekis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin

Im experiencing after recently upgrading pidgin packets (with the latest
upgrade that update-manager prompted) high cpu usage from pidgin. It takes
about 1-5 minutes after loading pidgin that this thing occurs.
I ran pidgin --debug on terminal and observed what was written the moment that
the cpu problem occurred.
Sometimes im experiencing crash problems too but i havent been able to
reproduce the error while i ran pidgin from a terminal.

[Bug 281737] Re: 2.6.27-7 kernel breaks USB

2008-10-13 Thread Michael Tsikerdekis
Also this bug has a random period of occurrence. For example now i work with
the new kernel and every usb device works fine even if plug and unplug.
Other times when i boot with the new kernel some devices if connected(like usb
media, or usb flash disk) work fine but mouse doesnt. Now if one of these
devices is disconnected then there is no way you can get it back. Of course no
chance for the mouse unless you restart and you be lucky with the new restart.

Could it be that this is a bug due to falty upgrade of ubuntu? Maybe
some weird corruption.

In my case when i upgraded there was a problem with the package rarian-
compat(probably faulty download). This led to installation failure of
packages that depend on it suchs zenity, gdm and many gnome packages for
that matter(found by apt-cache depends). Gnome was unable to load. In my
case i just loaded with terminal and i --purged the package rarian-
compat that was the one i was getting errors and issued an upgrade which
led to downloading again the package and finalize the rest of the
installation. Im saying this in case other users had problems with
upgrade maybe this is what's causing it.

[Bug 281737] Re: 2.6.27-7 kernel breaks USB

2008-10-12 Thread Michael Tsikerdekis
I did an apt-get update and ugrade.
I wan on 2.6.19 and restarted to the new kernel. Every usb device in the system
worked perfectly. I kept a log of this.
The second time around when i restarted again the system every device didnt
worked.

The same thing happened in the morning too. At first i loaded the old
kernel because i wanted to work with mouse, then i restarted to the new
kernel and worked...after one reboot all got back to the old ways of no
usb working.
