Another boot another lag (just a little less than last time):

2min 32.337s plymouth-quit-wait.service

But in journal there are a lot of interesting delays. But nothing in

[Bug 2064034] [NEW] Boot takes a long time due to "plymouth-quit-wait"

2024-04-28 Thread Michal Hečko
Public bug reported:

Fresh install of Ubuntu 24.04. Boot takes too long. Everything seems
corrent, plymount's loading screen disapears after a while (few seconds)
and black screen happends. This is the time when GDM3 should shows up. I
have to wait few minutes and then after changing TTY by pressing i.e.
CTRL+ALT+F2 and then immediately switch back by CTRL+ALT+F1 GDM3 shows
up.

I figured out, that "plymouth-quit-wait.service" took too much (4+ minutes).

[Bug 1898383] Re: tcsh filename pattern matching fails

2022-05-15 Thread Michal Szymanski
Ubuntu Maintainers, please fix that nasty bug ASAP. It is a serious bug, easily
leading to, e.g. accidental, unwanted deleting of files.
For an unknown reason, Ubuntu keeps distributing this buggy tcsh 6.21 version
although it was fixed already in 6.22 released in November 2019. There is now
version 6.24.1 and Ubuntu 22.04 still ships with 6.21.

[Bug 1969353] Re: Apt/Grub issue with 22.04 Upgrade (Missing libcrypto.so.1.1)

2022-04-27 Thread Michal Petřek
Hi all,
found out, that grub customizer provides backup of all the files before its
install in /etc/grub.d/backup. One workaround is simply just follow
RESTORE_INSTRUCTIONS placed there. Obviously there is a problem, that all
changes made to grub after customizer install will be lost, but after I
realized, what a mess this package made, I refuse to use it again.
Not sure, if this is possible after running release upgrade. I landed here
thanks to release notes, so I am doing this as a precaution.

[Bug 1970402] [NEW] Initrd out of memory error after upgrade to 22.04

2022-04-26 Thread Michal Zubkowicz
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to 22.04 system is unbootable because of "out of memory" error
when loading initial ramdisk. I was able to fix it by editing cat
/etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf

Not sure which one helped, but I can test it if needed.

[Bug 1964941] [NEW] Adding bpf to CONFIG_LSM in 5.13 kernels

2022-03-15 Thread Michal Rostecki
Public bug reported:

Linux kernel since 5.7 allows to write eBPF programs which can be
attached to LSM hooks. More details here:

https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/v5.9/bpf/bpf_lsm.html

There are already projects trying to leverage that

systemd with the restrict-fs feature
https://github.com/systemd/systemd/blob/main/src/core/bpf/restrict_fs/restrict-fs.bpf.c

https://github.com/linux-lock/bpflock

https://github.com/lockc-project/lockc

However, BPF LSM has to be enabled by adding bpf to CONFIG_LSM.
That was already done in:

Arch Linux

https://github.com/archlinux/svntogit-
packages/blob/4615bb2493649ad6fa133f864f94cb95c824f361/trunk/config#L9963

Fedora

https://fedorapeople.org/cgit/thl/public_git/kernel.git/tree/kernel-x86_64-fedora.config?h=kernel-5.17.0-0.rc5.20220225git53ab78cd6d5a.106.vanilla.1.fc34=e661d91eb909e777a9d28425ef50fcc5ef7fa5ed#n3291

openSUSE

https://github.com/openSUSE/kernel-
source/commit/c2c25b18721866d6211054f542987036ed6e0a50

Could we please enable BPF LSM in Ubuntu kernels as well? Without that
change, users trying to play with the mentioned projects have to edit
their /etc/default/grub to add bpf LSM.

[Bug 1652631] Re: [Feature request] Dependancy reduction

2021-11-26 Thread Michal Dziczkowski
Hello Paul and thanks for your answer. The problem is, that this case is
more server global one and does apply too many packages. Listing them
either here or in separate ticket's would be annoying from the reporting
side, plus I know that people here are volunteers who have also their
busy lives.

Thereof, this case should be given to the repository maintainers to
check why does such things were even able to happen.

[Bug 1652631] Re: [Feature request] Dependancy reduction

2021-11-25 Thread Michal Dziczkowski
I would like to add to my post an information that oftenly it comes to
the situation that after updating one package, it breakes another one,
with requires a dependant package with is unavaliable in the repository.

Maybe the repository maintainers should look up to this case and do
something to fix it ?

[Bug 1951827] Re: APT crashes with Segmentation fault

2021-11-24 Thread Michal Dziczkowski
This was only a informative bug report because Ubuntu and Debian share
many common packages.

This bug has appeared suddenly and without any warning or possibility to
backtrack, so it would be good that Ubuntu dev team was aware of it.

Have a nice day ;-)

[Bug 1950460] [NEW] grub doesn't load videoinfo with secure boot enabled

2021-11-10 Thread Michal Petřek
Public bug reported:

When I enter grub, whole interface is really unresponsive and rendering is
visibly slow. This is not new issue, so I was invastigating why is this
happening. When I enetered grub console after reboot and entered 'videoinfo'
command, grub answered 'Secure boot forbids loading module from
hd(...)...videoinfo.mod'.
When I disable secure boot, everything works as expected.
While I am using dual boot with windows 11, I need to keep secure boot enabled,
so the only solution from my point of view is to add videoinfo module into
'grub-efi-amd64-signed' package.

[Bug 1933532] Re: Large Page support disabled on Raspberry Pi kernels

2021-10-17 Thread Michal Babej
Would also appreciate if this was enabled.

Have a RPi4 with 8GB that runs Rosetta (from BOINC) with idle priority.
The tasks eat about 1G ram each; with 4 running there are quite a few
TLB misses:

root@vadelma:~# perf stat -I 1000 -e
dTLB-load-misses,dTLB-store-misses,iTLB-load-misses -a
# time counts unit events
   1.000395577 16,504,784 dTLB-load-misses

   1.000395577 1,562,981 dTLB-store-misses

   3.002516807 1,527,325 dTLB-store-misses

   3.002516807189,333 iTLB-load-misses

   4.003480550 27,343,138 dTLB-load-misses

   4.003480550 1,542,708 dTLB-store-misses

   4.003480550118,987 iTLB-load-misses

After recompiling the kernel with transparent hugepages and enabling
them:

root@vadelma:~# perf stat -I 1000 -e
dTLB-load-misses,dTLB-store-misses,iTLB-load-misses -a
# time counts unit events
 1.000446250 6,559,299 dTLB-load-misses

 1.000446250 78,022 dTLB-store-misses

 1.000446250615,533 iTLB-load-misses

 2.001771713 7,980,471 dTLB-load-misses

 2.001771713172,949 dTLB-store-misses

 2.001771713837,294 iTLB-load-misses

 3.002796124 6,795,584 dTLB-load-misses

 3.002796124 84,586 dTLB-store-misses

 3.002796124760,424 iTLB-load-misses

Average TLB misses are down about 2/3 while IPC is slightly up, by
8-10%.

I'm perfectly fine if it's disabled by default, but it would be nice to
not have to recompile the kernel.

[Bug 1846374] Re: Having a video playing/paused when switched to another user generates gigabytes of error logs

2021-10-03 Thread Michal Grňo
I can confirm this also happens on elementary OS 6 with nvidia-driver-470. I
tried to add a limit to /etc/systemd/journald.conf, but it didn't help at all.
Finally I managed to limit the log size using this tutorial:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/184949/how-do-i-limit-the-size-of-my-syslog

I still have problems with hight CPU & SSD usage caused by the logging,
but at least it doesn't fill my disk entirely.

[Bug 1939073] [NEW] [USB-Audio - Saffire 6 USB, playback] Sound is distorted and high-pitched

2021-08-05 Thread Michal Lašan
Public bug reported:

Probably after an upgrade of kernel to 5.11.0-25-generic from
5.8.0-50-generic which worked well in this regard, sound in the
Focusrite card started to be high-pitched and distorted. When I use the
normal audio output, the sound is correct.

Further debug info can be found here:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+question/696837

This is from the times when I accidentally upgraded to a newer
unofficial kernel and the same bug occurred to me. It seems that now an
official kernel with this bug has been submitted.

[Bug 1936919] Re: Some windows sometimes freeze

2021-08-03 Thread Michal Lašan
Today, also one window of Firefox froze. Do you think it is a similar
bug there? Can an application bug cause a window in which it is to be
completely irresponsive? I cannot move it, nor click any of the three
top buttons, nor can I close it by a Gnome extension for forcefully
closing windows.

[Bug 1936721] [NEW] [USB-Audio - Saffire 6 USB, playback] No sound at all - unable to play any audio, but it works after unplugging and plugging in the device

2021-07-17 Thread Michal Lašan
Public bug reported:

It sometimes happens, just like now, that I am unable to play any
youtube or local file - when I click play, the progress bar does not
move and there is no sound. I have to unplug and plug in the USB cable
of the Saffire one time or several times to make it work again.

It happened again and the report was made at that moment.

[Bug 1926504] Re: [Possible bug] dpkg-XXX (where XXX is name) does not read env variables

2021-04-30 Thread Michal Dziczkowski
There are meant all the developer related flags with are listed when
running the dpkg-buildflags with given the parameter to list them (for
example CPPFLAGS).

I have other parameters set in enviroment for them (according to getting
the best required result of compilation) and when attempting to build a
deb archive, it's beeing build with the ones from the mentioned in above
program, with creates a trash in form of debug files (and related), with
is by some applications a "bad thing to have" because it can create a
vulnerabilities (especially it it's a security related software)

[Bug 1926504] [NEW] [Possible bug] dpkg-XXX (where XXX is name) does not read env variables

2021-04-28 Thread Michal Dziczkowski
Public bug reported:

The reported problem (who exist in the most versions of Ubuntu and
Debian) apply to the tools, who's name begin with "dpkg-". I'll give the
problem description, basing on the example of "dpkg-buildflags".

After running the dpkg-buildflags command with a propper parameter, in
the terminal is displayed a list of compiler, linker, etc. flags, who
differ themself from the ones with are set in the enviroment and with I
wanted to use (instead of the displayed ones).

The problem that the enviroment aren't read in any way thru this
programs and use only the "build-in" ones, with is a quite serrios issue
because it may create vulnerabilities in the created archives or even
software.

[Bug 1912659] [NEW] [X570 UD, Realtek ALC887-VD, Green Headphone Out, Front] losing the sound

2021-01-21 Thread Michal Trachta
Public bug reported:

alsa force-reload + reboot helps, but only temporarily (similar to Bug
#1874689)

Unplugging and plugging in the headphones again results in losing the
sound.

During the time I was reporting the bug, the sound was OK. I unplugged
and plugged the headphones in -> no sound. Quite surprisingly, when I
finished the bug reporting, the sound was back.

Using Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. I have quite a new desktop, so some newer
hardware may be responsible for the issues

[Bug 1626689] Re: During boot process, system goes to sleep

2020-12-05 Thread Michal Hagara
Hi,

I've came across this bug report, when dealing with the same problem on
Dell E7450 (pretty much always docked) on kernel 5.9.11.

For anyone who stumbles upon this:

button.lid_init_state=open itself wasn't satisfactory, because it left
my laptop display ON of course, making it the main one. I've took the
naive approach, as my laptop is pretty much docker all the time.

cat /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/10-lid-workaround.sh
#!/usr/bin/bash

display_cnt=$(xrandr | grep -c " connected")
if [ $display_cnt -eq 3 ]; then
  xrandr --output DP1-1 --auto --left-of DP1-2 --output eDP1 --off
fi

which turns the laptop display off after login, while maintaing monitor
arrangemment I want display names might differ in your case.

@ Chris Guiver:

you are wrong here. I'm not ignoring it's limitations. I'm just got
suprised that Ubuntu has loosen the Wifi interface without any warning
while restart (even if Software Properties shows that Ubuntu should use
the driver, with was working before the shutdown)

[Bug 1906794] [NEW] Issues with LiveUSB related to persistant mode

2020-12-04 Thread Michal Dziczkowski
Public bug reported:

After downloading the Ubuntu 20.10 ISO, burning it out on a USB stick
and testing it(savings weren't saved) some time ago, I had decided to
modify it and add "persistant" (as described in Ubuntu domumentation) to
it to store the settings. After I did that, following problems started
to occur with the system:

1. Ubuntu started to work much slower then before adding "persistant"
2. after the computer was turned off (with proper system shutdown) and then
turned on, wifi has "vanished" (in the "Additional drivers" tab of the Software
Properties it was selected to use the driver, but it seem like the Wifi
interface wasn't existing anymore. I had to do following steps to restore it:

in the Software Properties in the tab "Additional drivers":

* select "don't use this device" and clicked "apply"
* had to restrart the computer

in the Software Properties in the tab "Additional drivers" (again):
* select "use the (...)" and click apply

after that I could close the Software properties with wifi restored

[Bug 1884734] Re: OVN deployment issues with high CPU load and disconnects

2020-06-25 Thread Michal Nasiadka
Update: it seems there is a bug in kolla-ansible causing this - we are
setting OVS system-id based on {{ inventory_hostname_short }} and if
Ansible inventory contains ip addresses - it will cause multiple OVN
chassis to have the same system-id - and they will ,,override'' each
other - which means OVN will get multiple create/delete events per
second - which results in 100% CPU usage of Neutron and OVSDB.
