[Bug 1813765] [NEW] Freeze on Lenovo laptop in dock station

2019-01-29 Thread Mikael Ståldal
Public bug reported:

I have a Lenovo T470s laptop with a Thinkpad Ultra dock.

After upgrading kernel to 4.15.0-44, the system freeze and has to be
hard reset (hold power button for 7 seconds) when booting, unlocking or
changing display configuration when in dock.

I downgraded the kernel to 4.15.0-43 and the problem went away.

(The system information is collected after downgraded the kernel to
4.15.0-43 and removing 4.15.0-44.)

[Bug 251632] Re: DHCP client should not create temporary files in /etc

2012-07-22 Thread Mikael Ståldal
The bug is not actually fixed, it is only worked around by installing
the "resolvconf" package by default. If you uninstall the "resolvconf"
package, the bug will reappear.

However, the buggy package is now "isc-dhcp-client".

[Bug 894448] Re: Unable to access USB storage of ZTE Blade Android phone

2011-11-27 Thread Mikael Ståldal
Yes, it's a bit strange.

With the current configuration, usb_modeswitch seems to do exactly the
opposite of what it is supposed to do, it puts my device into install
mode (0083). Without usb_modeswitch, my device ends up in non-install
mode (1350) and things works fine. I uninstalled the usb-modeswitch and
usb-modeswitch-data packages, and it works fine without them.

But when connecting my device to a Windows machine without driver, it
ends up in install mode.

There seems to be quite a lot going on in the udev subsystem when you
connect a USB device, can there be something else there which manages to
take the ZTE Blade out of install mode (which usb_modeswitch then
accidentally manage to undo)?

[Bug 894448] Re: Unable to access USB storage of ZTE Blade Android phone

2011-11-26 Thread Mikael Ståldal
No, it is not possible to use both modem and storage at the same time.
Modem and storage can only be activated when the device is connected.

When I activate modem mode, the device switch Id from 1350 to 1365. Id
1350 also seems to be the default when neither storage or modem is
activated.

ADB mode can be activated before plugging in, and it works in parallell
with storage, but not in parallell with modem.

2011-11-25 Thread Mikael Ståldal
When I connect it to a Windows 7 machine, a fake CD-ROM drive appears
with a driver on it.

When activating USB storage on the device, it will appear as a disk
device in Window, without having to install any driver.

Before installing the driver on Windows, it is not possible to access
the ADB.

After installing the driver on Windows, it is possible to access both
storage and ADB, but not at the same time it seems.

This bug is not a duplicate of bug #888274. This bug is about showing up

called in Unity), while bug #888274 is about showing up in the Dash (the

This bug is not fixed by the patch for bug #888274.

Sorry, I have misinterpreted this bug. It does indeed show up in the
Dash now, as it should. Pinning seems to be available as well.

It doesn't show up in the notification area (or whatever the right part
of the top panel is called in Unity) though. This is what bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnote/+bug/880899 is about,
someone has incorrectly marked it as duplicate of this one.

2011-11-17 Thread Mikael Ståldal
My user is part of the "libvirtd" group though, I followed this instruction:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/KVM/Installation

-
Add Users to Groups

Karmic (9.10) and later

The libvirtd-bin package will automatically add your username to the libvirtd
group. There is no need to be part of the kvm group.

[Bug 888757] Re: Home folder refuse to open with keyboard shortcut

2011-11-15 Thread Mikael Ståldal
It might be specific to the keyboard I use.

I have an USB keyboard from Logitech, lsusb says:
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 046d:c30e Logitech, Inc. UltraX Keyboard (Y-BL49)

My keyboard has six extra keys, one of them with a "home" icon on it,
which I want to assign to launch home folder.

This key is described as follows by xev:
KeyPress event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x4c1,
root 0x1ad, subw 0x0, time 4362256, (141,103), root:(142,156),
state 0x0, keycode 180 (keysym 0x1008ff18, XF86HomePage), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XFilterEvent returns: False

I open System Settings, go to Keyboard, Shortcuts, Launchers. There I select
"Home folder" and press this key, the key is named "HomePage". Then when I
press this key, the home folder icon in the Unity launcher flashes for a few
seconds and this is written to ~/.xsession-errors:
Could not parse arguments: Unknown option --browser

[Bug 757991] Re: java applications a double icon appears

2011-11-15 Thread Mikael Ståldal
I have a similar problem with IntelliJ IDEA. I cannot get it to be kept
in Launcher at all.

If you download and install a cross-platform Java application, not
specifically packaged for Ubuntu, then you will obviously not get any
.desktop file. Are you, as a user, supposed to write a .desktop file for
it in order for Unity to handle it properly?

I think that it is quite important for a user to be able to reconfigure
key bindings like Alt-F1 and Alt-F2 since they clash with some
applications, such as IntelliJ IDEA.

[Bug 886898] [NEW] More file handling functions in Eye of GNOME

2011-11-06 Thread Mikael Ståldal
Public bug reported:

In the image viewer Eye of GNOME, the file handling options are very
limited. You can only Move to trash and copy (by using "Save as..."
which is a bit non-obvious).

Make all file handling functions in Nautilus (those you find on the
context menu for a file) in Eye Of GNOME. This includes Cut (to move the
file), Copy (to copy the file), Create link, Rename, Delete (if
activated in Nautilus preferences) and change file attributes.

(I posted this as an idea on Brainstorm, but it was rejected there and I was
told to file a bug instead, so here it is
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/20680/)

[Bug 883107] Re: Rygel fails to listen on eth0

2011-10-29 Thread Mikael Ståldal
Possibly, but shouldn't rygel listen on eth0 if I explicitly tell it to
do so, regardless of what NetworkManager says?

But perhaps we have a bug in NetworkManager. How can I check which
interfaces NetworkManager thinks is available (without using rygel)?

[Bug 159178] Re: Banshee does not read ID3v2 UTF-8 encoded tags

2011-06-17 Thread Mikael Ståldal
I experience this bug in Ubuntu 11.04 with banshee 2.0.0-2ubuntu1.

Try with the attached MP3 file, it contains an ID3 title tag with
Swedish non-ASCII characters encoded with UTF-8.

The id3v2 tool shows it correctly in the terminal:

$ id3v2 -l test.mp3
id3v1 tag info for test.mp3:
Title : Räksmörgås Artist:
Album : Year: , Genre: Unknown (255)
Comment: Track: 0
id3v2 tag info for test.mp3:

[Bug 608588] [NEW] Sometimes fails to create certain directores in /var/run at startup

2010-07-22 Thread Mikael Ståldal
Public bug reported:

The startup scripts creates a number of directories in /var/run at

[Bug 22199] Re: Firefox steals Alt-Tab whilst in URL completion drop-down

2010-07-05 Thread Mikael Ståldal
This is indeed a real problem which needs to be fixed.

I have now experienced problem with Firefox 3.6.6 hangs, and when it
hangs in this state, the whole system became effectively unusable since
you are not able to switch to another program or kill Firefox. (The fact
that Firefox 3.6.6 hangs is another, probably unrelated, problem.)

However, you can argue that the problem actually is that the desktop
environment allows Firefox to steam keyboard shortcuts.

[Bug 550774] [NEW] Run Application does not have proper file name completion

2010-03-29 Thread Mikael Ståldal
Public bug reported:

The "Run Application" (Alt-F2) dialog in GNOME does not have proper
support for file name completion.

If you want to run a file in some directory, you enter the directory
name and then you are stuck unless you know the first character of the
file name. Even if there is only one file in the directory, you need to
supply the first character of the file name to proceed.

And if the directory contains more than one file with the same file name
prefix, you need to enter an unique prefix to proceed.

It should be possible to get a list of files matching a given prefix (or
all files in the directory if no prefix is given). It should provide the
same functionality as TAB completion in the shell (but not necessary
using the TAB key).

(Ubuntu 9.10.)

message:

But it does work to mount it from /etc/gdm/PostLogin/Default.

I use DHCP. I suspect that NFS mounting does not wait for the DHCP

[Bug 251632] Re: DHCP client should not create temporary files in /etc

2009-11-15 Thread Mikael Ståldal
OK, I have made a new patch according to what nfm says, for the new
version of dhclient-script in 9.10.

Could someone please apply this now, so I don't have to do this again
for 10.04?

[Bug 465349] Re: /etc/gdm/Xsession does not call /etc/X11/Xsession

It seems like removing the file /etc/X11/Xsession.d/99x11-common_start
is a workaround for this.

I just wondered why my ~/.xsession did not execute any more after
upgrade to 9.10, here is the answer.

Are there any workaround for this bug?

[Bug 400127] [NEW] gimp-help packages is for old version of GIMP

2009-07-16 Thread Mikael Ståldal
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gimp-help-common

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 9.04
Release:9.04

The gimp-help packages are for an older version of GIMP (2.4.1) than the
gimp package (2.6.6).

And it is not even possible to remove the obsolete gimp-help packages
since the language-support-translation packages depends of them :-(

[Bug 235165] Re: tools should use libvolume-id instead of libblkid

2009-04-15 Thread Mikael Ståldal
blkid has the bad practice of updating a file in /etc (blkid.tab). This
is annoying and against the spirit of http://www.pathname.com/fhs/pub/fhs-2.3.html#ETCHOSTSPECIFICSYSTEMCONFIGURATION";>FHS.

Can you fix that while you're at it?

Well, it might be regarded as a feature by some. But nevertheless it

[Bug 329008] Re: .xsession it aborted at shutdown

2009-02-18 Thread Mikael Ståldal
/etc/rc*.d requires root access to setup, and by default it is run as
root for every user. And AFAIK, it's the same with Gnome logout
notification, isn't it?

I want something which a user can setup without root access, and which
is run as that user and only when that user logout (or shutdown).

A laptop user which often run out of battery might not want to use this
feature (or have a very quick backup procedure). But that's not a valid
reason for not providing it for everybody else.

Not everyone have a laptop, and not everyone with a laptop actually make
extensive use of the battery (I almost never use my laptop when it's not
plugged in).

That's the way I use to shutdown Ubuntu desktop.

Anyway, wouldn't it be USEFUL if the stuff in .xsession was executed at
shutdown?

Should I perhaps submit this to Brainstorm instead?

[Bug 329008] Re: .xsession it aborted at shutdown

2009-02-14 Thread Mikael Ståldal
So why does not the shutdown sequence wait for .xsession to finish? It
did in Ubuntu 8.04.

Is there any other way for a user to run stuff at logout AND shutdown?

I know you can fiddle with /etc/rc2.d stuff, but that's complicated and
requires root access.

[Bug 329008] [NEW] .xsession it aborted at shutdown

2009-02-13 Thread Mikael Ståldal
Public bug reported:

I have created an ~/.xsession file to run stuff at login and logout.
This works file when I logout, but when I use the shutdown option in the
menu, the .xsession is aborted and the logout stuff is not run.

1)
Description:Ubuntu 8.10
Release:8.10

3) Using this ~/.xsession file:
#!/bin/sh
logger "Before gnome-session"
gnome-session
logger "After gnome-session"

I expect "After gnome-session" to be written to syslog when I logout or
shutdown.

4) "After gnome-session" is written to syslog when I logout, but not
when I shutdown.
