[Bug 287745] [NEW] Installing sugar-web-activity uninstalls epiphany

2008-10-22 Thread Morgan Collett
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sugar-web-activity

sugar-web-activity depends on python-xpcom and needs v1.9. However in
intrepid, python-xpcom is 1.8 and python-xpcom 1.9 is provided by
xulrunner-1.9.

Installing python-xpcom (1.8) uninstalls epiphany.

To fix this, the dependency must be changed from python-xpcom to
xulrunner-1.9.

[Bug 284876] Re: Default jabber server doesn't work

2008-10-21 Thread Morgan Collett
Hi James,

The error stating org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Un...etworkManager doesn't
exist (as it displays for me) is a separate issue, but not an actual
problem on Ubuntu. It relates to a sort of flight-mode for the OLPC
hardware, disabling the wifi radio. I've logged bug 287028 about that.

As long as the Server: bit below that is empty, this particular issue
is solved.

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sugar

In the control panel, under Wireless / Radio, the error
org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Un...etworkManager doesn't exist is

2008-10-18 Thread Morgan Collett
There is a dbus error about the OLPC hardware manager not being found,
but that's not relevant.

Look in ~/.sugar/default/config for:
[Jabber]
server =

If it says server = olpc.collabora.co.uk, that's the old behaviour that
results in breakage.

If it has server =
(blank) then this is fixed.

To test a new profile, as Luke said, move ~/.sugar out the way and start
Sugar again.

2008-10-17 Thread Morgan Collett
The 0.7 interface is very different. The upstream Sugar team intend to
fix this soon but it's been pending for a long time so I don't have
confidence we'll have a real fix before intrepid releases.

I am watching the progress, so if they come up with a fix I'll log a bug
to revert this patch and apply that one.

In the mean time, this is quite critical to get into intrepid as
collaboration is one of the core features of Sugar.

[Bug 284876] [NEW] Default jabber server doesn't work

2008-10-17 Thread Morgan Collett
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sugar-toolkit

Sugar has a default jabber server to add to new user profiles, which is
olpc.collabora.co.uk. This was a development server but now runs
experimental changes, so it doesn't provide the collaboration features
any more. Using this server causes link local collaboration, the
fallback, to fail too because Sugar thinks it is connected to a valid
server.

A newer stable upstream release 0.82.9 has removed the default jabber server
and allowed an empty string:

2008-10-16 Thread Morgan Collett
Thanks James,

Upstream haven't been publishing changelogs for hulahop (just indicating
bugs fixed in release announcements) - I'll ask them to do so. Based on
the git logs the changes between 0.4.1 (the previous version) and 0.4.6
are all bug fixes, not new features, but I couldn't tell which version
specifically fixed the issue from the git logs - testing showed that it
works with the latest stable release.

I'll use the .diff.gz method next time for a new upstream revision.

Luke, it needs abiword to be built in a modular way to produce a
libabiword package, which python-abiword would need. I spoke to abiword
upstream (uwog) and it will probably happen for the next major abiword
release.

Abiword is built like this in the sugarteam PPA, so I'll update it to
the latest abiword version (2.6.4) there and keep sugar-write-activity
there until we can support it in the main archive in jaunty.

[Bug 284557] [NEW] Sugar Presence Service fails to connect to jabber server

2008-10-16 Thread Morgan Collett
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sugar-presence-service

Sugar Presence Service fails to connect to a jabber server, with the error in
presenceservice.log being:
1224179059.306887 DEBUG s-p-s.psutils: Error getting NetworkManager devices:
org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownMethod: Method getDevices with signature
on interface org.freedesktop.NetworkManager doesn't exist

This is because PS (Presence Service) works with NetworkManager 0.6.x,
and not 0.7 which is in Intrepid. NM 0.7 has a different D-Bus interface
for this call.

The failing call is to watch NM to see when we have a valid IP address.
There is a fallback to manually check the IP address, but it isn't
called if NM is seen on the session bus, so I have a patch to disable
the initial check for NM.

[Bug 219358] Re: Package has unresolved dependancies

2008-10-15 Thread Morgan Collett
Updated packages for hardy including Sugar 0.82 are in the Sugar Team
PPA: https://launchpad.net/~sugarteam/+archive. I'll test and make sure
Write is working there.

Unfortunately, sugar-write-activity still won't work in intrepid out of
the box because abiword is still not packaged in ubuntu with libabiword
and python-abiword. I'll carry over the python-abiword to intrepid in
the PPA to handle this.

The best course of action may be to remove sugar-write-activity from
intrepid's archive to prevent support issues.

[Bug 283254] [NEW] sugar-pollbuilder uninstallable

2008-10-14 Thread Morgan Collett
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sugar-pollbuilder-activity

It depends on python-abiword which is unpackaged.

Abiword upstream say it requires libabiword and pyabiword to be packaged

dependency since it's not required for the core functionality of this

2008-10-08 Thread Morgan Collett
I tried running this against hulahop, which is the hardy package, but it

build in intrepid because the build deps were wrong. I filed bug #280424

[Bug 277770] Re: Please sync sugar 0.82.0-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main).

2008-10-07 Thread Morgan Collett
Debian do not want to provide the sugar-activities metapackage. In the
hardy packages, this is produced by the sugar sourcepackage.

My intention is to add the metapackage back to debian's sugar package
once we have it synced - unfortunately it is a deviation but a very
minor one.

In the long term, we will have more activities (apps) packaged in Debian
(and some are only in Ubuntu but we will submit them to Debian) and then
having a metapackage that installs *everything* will no longer be
appropriate, but upstream is producing a set of activities which are
developed in tight coordination with the Sugar platform, called
Fructose, whereas other activities are community-developed on their own
schedule (and code-named Honey). This is reflected on our
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SugarTeam/Packages page. So in intrepid+1 we may
replace sugar-activities with sugar-fructose as a metapackage which
pulls in the upstream blessed activities.

For now I would prefer to continue using sugar-activities as a patch
carried over from the hardy packages - but we will continue working with
Debian to feed our patches and suggestions back to them and minimise the
delta.

Morgan

I'd also question calling it a window manager when it depends on

Yes, it's not a window manager, more of a platform. I have found several

show stoppers. I'll send them patches.

On Mon, Oct 06, 2008 at 11:00:31PM -, James Westby wrote:

This is a feature, not a bug: Debhelper 5.0.44 and newer supports
Debhelper compatibiliy level 6.

Has ${shlibs:Depends}, ${python:Depends} for a python package,
should rather be ${python:Depends}, ${misc:Depends} I think.

Agreed.

Thanks for spotting this - it is now added for the next Debian release
of all Sugar packages.

Also, this popped up during the build:

WARNING: The following new or changed copyright notices discovered:

That warning does not occur on Debian unstable, so is most likely due to
the use of a different version of the licensecheck tool.

In other words: feel free to investigate, but the warning is most likely
harmless.

Kind regards,

[Bug 274820] Re: Sugar feature freeze exception

2008-10-03 Thread Morgan Collett
norsetto,

I have pulled the debian packages into my PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~morgan/+archive - the only changes I made were
changing the maintainer to me in debian/control since it wouldn't upload
without an ubuntu.com address.

(Initially I uploaded for hardy, so I reuploaded for intrepid to make
sure the packages were built against intrepid.)

The hardy sugar sourcepackage produces three binary packages whereas
debian's doesn't - the extras, sugar-emulator (installing just one file
/usr/bin/sugar-emulator and depending on xephyr) and sugar-activities (a
metapackage) are trivial to add in debian/ so I can do that as soon as
we sync.

sugar-hulahop is the one problem now since it requires python-xpcom 1.9,
and we only have python-xpcom built off xulrunner (1.8) not
xulrunner-1.9 so I have logged bug 277564 for that. sugar-hulahop is a
dependency of the web browser, sugar-web-activity, so that won't work
unless this is fixed, but it's just a packaging issue for xulrunner-1.9.

With that exception, I installed the other packages on a new intrepid VM
and got the attached install log.

[Bug 274820] Re: Sugar feature freeze exception

2008-09-27 Thread Morgan Collett
Cesare, we have packaging of newer upstream components in a PPA,
following the existing hardy packaging:
https://launchpad.net/~chapter78/+archive. That doesn't change package
names or binaries. While we have been working more closely with the
debian maintainer recently, it might be more risky to switch to the
debian packaging and maybe we should update the current packaging with
the latest upstream stable (slightly newer than this PPA - see
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SugarTeam/Packages where I have listed all the
versions).

I'll update the Sugar Team PPA to this latest upstream packaging in the
next few days and we can evaluate that. I'm open to suggestions in this
- what I want to see is Sugar updated before intrepid releases.

2008-09-27 Thread Morgan Collett
Stefan,

Jani Monoses who did the hardy packaging is on our mailing list,
although he has little time for involvement. I'll ask him for his input
here.

I've been holding back on advertising the team and the tasks to recruit
more people to get involved, until we have the FFE and some packages,
but I'll see who I can recruit to assist.

[Bug 274820] Re: Sugar feature freeze exception

2008-09-27 Thread Morgan Collett
I am an upstream developer and have been involved in the Sugar 0.82
release, so I'm very familiar with the upstream source. I am the direct
upstream maintainer of sugar-chat-activity, sugar-read-activity, sugar-
pollbuilder-activity and co-maintainer of sugar-presence-server.

I will discuss what Jani has raised with the Debian team. We have some
activities packaged that they don't yet have, although in most cases
there have not been significant updates since the hardy versions, so
that's not a significant problem. I'll see if we can get those
activities into Debian.

At this point, Ubuntu is considered the best platform for people to use
for Sugar besides OLPC's XO. This is due to the hardy packages, as well
as the PPA that I mentioned. I would hate to see that regress.

Admittedly I am new to deb packaging, although I have in the course of
working for OLPC become a fedora maintainer for several of the Sugar
components, and am confident that I'll master the deb packaging in short
order.

[Bug 274820] [NEW] Sugar feature freeze exception

2008-09-26 Thread Morgan Collett
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sugar

Sugar (http://sugarlabs.org/) is the UI from One Laptop Per Child that
has spun off into an upstream project.

The intrepid packaging is very out of date since it hasn't been updated
since hardy. Jani Monoses did that packaging but hasn't been able to
work on this. We have formed a Sugar Team to work on packaging (see
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SugarTeam) but we are quite behind on this.

There has been a major release of Sugar recently, which we want to land
in intrepid.

We want to sync Sugar's 0.82.x packages from debian, according to this
list: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SugarTeam/Packages - there are a few minor
packages which debian doesn't have, where we do have updated packaging
in a PPA: https://launchpad.net/~chapter78/+archive

None of the packages we want to touch are dependencies of other things -
this is a very self-contained project at this stage.

Please grant a Feature Freeze exception for Sugar so we can get this
updated.

[Bug 213906] [NEW] python-central postinst failed: terminator is not installed

2008-04-08 Thread Morgan Collett
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: python-central

Background:
Some time ago I read an article about terminator, with a download link. The
download link turned out to be for the package in hardy/universe, and it would
not install on gutsy because it depended on a newer python-central. I
aborted/removed it (or so I thought.)

I upgraded from gutsy to hardy on 7 April, using update-manager. At some
point things started failing with a message like:

Could not install python-central: subprocess postinst returned error
exit status 1

This caused a whole lot of other things to not install (gnome-panel etc)
as they depended on python. I eventually completed the upgrade in a
terminal. When I tried to upgrade python-central manually, it reported:
pycentral: pycentral pkginstall: package terminator is not installed.

I installed terminator from universe, and then upgrading python-central
succeeded - and I could install the failed packages and complete the
upgrade to hardy.

[Bug 43961] Re: Power down after shutdown does not work...

2007-05-17 Thread Morgan Collett
Let me state my experience again which corresponds to the bug status in
the different kernel versions for Dapper, Edgy and Feisty:

Dapper could not power off or reboot for me. (Sony Vaio VGN-S460)
Edgy could reboot but not power off for me.
Feisty can reboot and can power off - fixed for me.

Reading recent comments on this bug, it's not clear whether people are
complaining about Feisty - which would be a legitimate cause for concern
- or about Edgy (or Dapper) which are not fixed. (And unlikely to ever
be fixed.)

So please say what release you are running...

Those comments seems to be this problem, although bug 43961 itself is
now fixed for me on Feisty (on different hardware where it did occur).

[Bug 86504] Re: Shutdown, Hibernate, and Suspend Not Working

2007-03-11 Thread Morgan Collett
I have the same issue, I think. Shutdown is similar to a reboot - the
computer appears to power off completely, but a second later it boots up
again. Hibernate does the same.

This is on a platform we hope to hardware certify for Feisty - if we can
solve this problem.

There is no page https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelSuspendDebugging ?

I will attach the data requested in a separate comment.
