[Bug 627014] Re: Text color issue in Maverick Alpha

2010-12-03 Thread MrMacman2u
Looks like the latest patch release of the light-theme package has
(finally) been made aware of the CPU Scaling Monitor applets special
case.

This bug report can be considered resolved as the problem has been
fixed.

Thank you!

[Bug 617085] Re: Transmission causing a kernel panic

2010-10-03 Thread MrMacman2u
I haven't used Transmission in quite some time because I have been
focusing on other problems/bugs/life, however, I discovered today that
Transmission STILL causes a kernel panic on my T42 Thinkpad after a
random amount of time. Sometimes it's 5 minutes, sometimes it's and hour
and happens regardless if the computer is being used or not.

Oddly enough the kernel panic does NOT seem to occur when the laptop is
on battery, but the battery is old and only lasts for about 30 minutes
so I have not extensively tested that.

This problem is something that happens 100% of the time and is
completely reproducible: Make sure laptop is on AC power, Open
Transmission, wait some time, watch it crash and burn (KP). Clockwork.

This is with a very nearly stock and fully up-to-date install of
Ubuntu (Maverick RC) with no other running applications and no settings
in Transmission have been changed.

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu maverick (development branch)
Release:10.10

$ apt-cache policy transmission

  Candidate: 2.04-0ubuntu2
  Version table:

This problem has rendered Transmission completely useless for use on my
Thinkpad!

[Bug 646474] Re: Screen Resolution not correctly detected

2010-09-29 Thread MrMacman2u
Having a similar problem though I've been slow to report it. Oddly my
resolution is not being correctly detected in the OTHER direction as the
original poster. My Thinkpad T42 has a 1024x768 display and after
updating at roughly the same time, my log in screen and Gnome desktop
after logging in were both set to 1360x786... BEYOND the maximum of my
Thinkpad's internal display (no external display connected or HAS been
connected)

I was able to set the desktop back to 1024x768, but the log in screen is
still missing the entire right 337 pixels which hides the shutdown and
restart, etc... options off the physical edge of the display.

A screen shot of my gnome desktop is attached, I do not know how to get
a screen grab of the log in screen.

[Bug 641525] Re: Screen with 4:3 ratio incorrectly detected as having 16:9 ratio

2010-09-29 Thread MrMacman2u
Alvaro, your solution does solve the symptoms (thanks!!), but a peek at
my xrandr output leads me to believe that the underlying problem may not
be gone.

$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 4096 x 4096
VGA-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DVI-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
LVDS connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm
   1024x768 60.0*+ 60.0
   1360x768 59.8
   800x60060.3 59.9
   848x48059.7
   720x48059.7
   640x48059.9 59.4
S-video disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

It's still detecting my 1024x768 laptop display as 1360x768 CAPABLE
which is quite incorrect. I'm using a T42 Thinkpad with the M7 (Radeon
Mobility 7500)

Thanks for your solution and any additional consideration to this issue!

[Bug 647488] Re: when xorg starts, screen is corrupted

2010-09-29 Thread MrMacman2u
Not sure what you might have wrong here, I also have a T42 Thinkpad and
have become a casual expert on the glitches and inconsistencies of the
radeon driver and the 7500 Mobility because when I reinstall or dist
upgrade, something breaks to some extent or another (performance
regressions, not suspending during system sleep, KMS issues, agp mode
breaking and falling back to 1x, XAA being used instead of EXA, etc...)
I've had to wrestle with it every. single. time.

Regardless, KMS seems to be working for me with no trouble (currently),
and I've been running Maverick since Alpha 2.

If nomodeset is working, I'm guessing you've built an xorg.conf file?
If you have, try removing that (backups are good) first.

If that fails try the solution in the comments here:
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
ati/+bug/641525

Maybe one day the 7500 in the T42 wil work correctly with an out of the
box Ubuntu install, but that day is not today ;)

[Bug 576698] Re: gnome-power-manager hibernates instead of suspending on idle

2010-09-28 Thread MrMacman2u
Just a note here, I hadn't noticed previously, but when on AC power the
system properly suspends to RAM when the idle timer has expired. On
battery power the laptop suspends to disk (hibernates) after the time is

[Bug 650683] [NEW] [Maverick] System hibernates when suspend is implied on battery

2010-09-28 Thread MrMacman2u
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

This is more of a wishlist item at this point, but I am adding it as a
bug because it's inconsistent with the UI, inconsistent within itself
and I would consider VERY annoying to laptop users. I know it drives me
CRAZY because hibernation is painfully slow (several minutes) on my
laptops.

Basically the problem is simple, when any laptop is on AC the system
idle timeout invokes suspend to RAM, while on battery the system idle
timeout invokes hibernation.

I am expecting suspend to RAM (sleep) to be invoked for BOTH instances
as described within the gnome_power_manager GUI To quote from both the
AC and Battery options, they have identical wording; Put computer to
sleep when inactive for:. This implies that the action taken would be
the same (sleep aka suspend to RAM) whether on AC or or battery power.
It is not and this was a cause of some serious confusion until I figured
out that my computer WASN'T going into suspend, but was instead
hibernating.

The fix:
It is literally one setting that can be changed via gconf-editor apps
gnome-power-manager actions and changing the option sleep_type_battery
from hibernate to suspend.

If, for some reason, this is desired behavior, then please consider this
bug report as a complaint about the GUI wording inconsistency that leads
to user confusion and thus unexpected system behavior.

On a personal note, I hope it's not desired behavior on part of the
developers as my experience has shown that hibernate is more often
broken on laptops than suspend to RAM, especially on my T42 Thinkpad.

Ok, this has been bugging me since I installed Alpha 3
(Ambience's-maverick-beta theme) and still has been persistent even after it
was renamed to Ambiance in a recent update. There are certain text elements
that show up almost invisible because they are so dark. Screenshot will be
attached with an example of the CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor where I first
discovered the problem and will add more examples as I remember (found examples
of the problem in some Firefox add-ons as well).

This was not a problem with the 10.04 Ambiance theme but showed up in
the ambiance beta theme for 10.10. See the attached screen shot for a
good example. This seems to be a problem with theme's handling of
certain usage of text elements/formatting in applications and not the
applications themselves.

Manual suspend works correctly.

This is a very frustrating bug as hibernate is incredibly slow on this

[Bug 622555] Re: gnome-applets CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor Display quirk

2010-08-29 Thread MrMacman2u
Ok, I have found this problem in other area's such as firefox add-on's
and it may be necessary to move this bug into the Maverick Ambiance
theme package as the problem seems to be a theme issue and not an applet
issue as I first suspected...

I suspect this is the source of the problem, but when I choose to restart or

[Bug 613143] Re: Theme settings do not apply fully

2010-08-25 Thread MrMacman2u
Having the same issue here on the 32 bit x86 version of 10.10. When I am
running Compiz and a new theme is chosen, all the elements correctly
change EXCEPT the window border. The only way to change the window
border is to choose Customize and set it manually to the correct
theme.

Quite annoying and could be very confusing to newcomers! I doubt it's
considered a show-stopper, but still, it's glitch that didn't exist in
previous versions so I suppose it's a regression.

[Bug 606706] Re: [maverick] HD spins down all the time on AC

2010-08-24 Thread MrMacman2u
Ok, as I sit here on my T42 Thinkpad running on battery and a fully up
to date version of Maverick Alpha 3 and listen to my hard drive spin up
and down so often it rarely actually FINISHES spinning DOWN before
spooling back UP, I'm going to chime in and say the settings are way,
way, WAY too aggressive.

This MAY be a stupid question, but couldn't we let the user change the
spin-down times for ac AND battery instead of(including?) simply
providing a yes or no check box to allow spin down in Gnome?

Failing that, what config file/script needs to be edited in maverik in
order to tone down the settings manually. I don't want the hdparm
settings solution as that doesn't stick across reboots. Thanks!

[Bug 622555] [NEW] gnome-applets CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor Display quirk

2010-08-23 Thread MrMacman2u

I hope this is the right place to file this, I am still unsure and offer my
apologies if I guessed incorrectly, but the CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor
applet from the gnome-applets collection does not properly display the correct
color text when the Ambiance-maverick-beta theme is chosen.

Instead of having the text showing the current CPU frequency display in
white with the dark theme, it displays in black which makes it
impossible to read.

Just a minor quirk, I hope I filed it correctly. Thanks!

Sure thing! I have attached a screen shot that shows the problem. The
CPU frequency monitor applet that is suffering from the problem is in
the bottom right next to the system monitor applet and the workspace
switcher. You can still see the icon and if you look at it just right,
you can barely see the text, but it's black on black.

[Bug 614039] Re: gnome-power-manager crashed with signal 5 in _XError()

2010-08-23 Thread MrMacman2u
The update fixed the crashing problem, but now the gnome-power-
backlight-helper is chronically in your face asking for authentication
twice on boot up and every 10 seconds or so (two times each time) if you
leave the dim display when idle option checked.

So, it seems we're no longer crashing, but now the backlight manager is
more annoying than Vista! Still, progress in the right direction :)

[Bug 619047] [NEW] radeon putting AGP V2 device into 1x mode

2010-08-17 Thread MrMacman2u
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-radeon

When using KMS, dmesg shows that the radeon driver puts my 7500
Mobility in 1X mode instead of 4X mode which the AGP V2 bridge supports.
It used to default to the correct mode with 9.10. The problem originally
appeared on 10.04.

lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu maverick (development branch)
Release:10.10

apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-video-radeon
xserver-xorg-video-radeon:
  Installed: 1:6.13.1-1ubuntu2
  Candidate: 1:6.13.1-1ubuntu2
  Version table:
 *** 1:6.13.1-1ubuntu2 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick/main i386 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

The driver should be setting the detected AGP v2 bridge to 4x mode
instead of the fallback 1x mode.

Please let me know if any additional information is required to help
resolve this problem, I'd love to see a release of Ubuntu where the
first thing I do after installing is NOT have to fight with my Radeon
7500 Mobility on my T42 Thinkpad!

[Bug 617085] [NEW] Transmission causing a kernel panic

2010-08-12 Thread MrMacman2u
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: transmission

Transmission is causing a Kernel Panic on my system after about 10
minutes if the system is left idle, I have not measured the time it
takes, but it happens 100% of the time I have transmission open. It does
not matter if I have other applications open or not, the kernel panic
will ALWAYS occur.

The kernel panic happens when I have active transfers, however I have
not tried it if the transfers are paused or if there are no transfers.
