[Bug 1210848] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS - intel ips failed to update for more than 1s

2015-07-13 Thread Nick Jenkins
@Joseph (jsalisbury)

Yes, I still have this laptop. it is currently installed with Windows 7
for the pending OEM Windows 10 upgrade. I have a spare HDD I can swap
out for testing for a Linux install though. What would you like me to
try out?

[Bug 299021] Re: evolution crashed with SIGSEGV in strlen()

2013-11-03 Thread Nick Jenkins
Yes this bug is obsolete now (software is 5+ years old), but I can't see
a bug status option for Obsolete or Expired, only Invalid - but
this was a valid problem in this software. Seems like there's no status
available that I can select that reflects what actually happened?

[Bug 1201659] Re: gnome-panel crashed with SIGSEGV in gweather_location_equal()

2013-10-29 Thread Nick Jenkins
This happened to me in Ubuntu 13.10, when I was in Gnome 3 fallback desktop.
I right clicked on the panel clock - preferences - ticked show weather -
close, and then it crashed.
If it helps, under the Locations tab, I have only one location, being Sydney
Airport Eastern Time (New South Wales).

[Bug 903306] Re: no reaction on shortly pressing power button

2013-08-25 Thread Nick Jenkins
on my machine everything work now, can you control on yours?
No, it's still present as a problem in Ubuntu 13.04 Raring. Pressing the power
button _after_ logging in will bring up the shutdown dialog - but at the
greeter/login screen, pressing the power button still does nothing, so it's
still an issue.

So the set I would want to test is #5?

5. tags from the combined v2.6.32.x.y tree (by StefanBader) which is
v2.6.32.x with DRM from 2.6.33.y.

Is that correct?

[Bug 1210848] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS - intel ips failed to update for more than 1s

2013-08-12 Thread Nick Jenkins
From the saucy image install from step 3

First I ran:

sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade -y sudo apt-get dist-
upgrade -y

Then I installed your (Joseph Salisbury) patch in this order:

linux-headers-3.11.0-2
linux-headers-3.11.0-2-generic
linux-image-3.11.0-2-generic
linux-image-extra-3.11.0-2-generic

Shutting down via GUI hung. Some info below:

* Killing all remaining processes... [fail]
modem-manager[674]: info Caught signal 15, shutting down...

* Deactivating swap... [ok]
mount: / is busy
* Will now halt
[ 2035.062909] mei_me 000:00:16.0: stop
[ 2035.303455] Power down.
##Never fully powered off##

Rebooted the system and logged in.
Was prompted about sending a bug report for bug #1206314 (did not submit
because it's known).

/var/log/syslog still contains many entries for:
intel ips :00:1f.6: ME failed to update for more than 1s, likely hung

I am not sure what you would like done with the tags as mentioned in
comment 3.

[Bug 830915] Re: [Oneiric] Error during kernel upgrade: Could not locate dkms.conf file

2012-05-23 Thread Nick Jenkins
You might have some other directories left over from an old version of
virtualbox under /var/lib/dkms/ . For example, I had some directories
left over from 3.2.6, and the fix for me was:

sudo rm -r /var/lib/dkms/vboxnetadp /var/lib/dkms/vboxdrv
/var/lib/dkms/vboxnetflt

Basically you should check the timestamps of any directories under
/var/lib/dkms that start with either 'vbox' or 'virtual'. If they're
fairly old (e.g. 1 year) then there's a reasonable chance that they
might be cruft left over from an old version of VirtualBox. Deciding
whether to delete them or not is at your discretion.

And really, there are 2 entirely separate software problems here:
1) VirtualBox should clean up after itself by removing these old directories
when being uninstalled or upgraded.
2) dkms should be explicit and unambiguous about which directory it has a
problem with. For example there would be a LOT less confusion all round if it
said Error in directory /var/lib/dkms/vboxdrv , belonging to package
'virtualbox' - Could not locate dkms.conf file. instead of the completely
non-specific: Error! Could not locate dkms.conf file.

[Bug 795332] Re: nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV in app_chooser_online_get_default_ready_cb()

2012-03-29 Thread Nick Jenkins
If the upstream bug is correct, then that upstream bug is a dupe of:

RESOLVED FIXED 2 months ago. Perhaps this should be marked as RESOLVED

bug, so alternatively perhaps this bug is a dupe of that one?

[Bug 903306] Re: no reaction on shortly pressing power button

2012-02-22 Thread Nick Jenkins
I have a desktop with USB keyboard mouse, and a motherboard (MSI
G31M3) that intermittently (around 1 boot in 15) fails to initialise
USB correctly in the BIOS. Unplugging and re-plugging USB devices
doesn't help, the whole subsystem is non-functional, the only thing that
works is to reboot.

For those boots when I have no functioning input device, in Ubuntu 11.04
and before, the power button on the case was my input device, because it
could be pressed briefly, and the computer would then shut itself down
cleanly after 60 seconds, and then I could boot again normally, and the
USB problem was easily worked around. But from 11.10 onwards, this no
longer works, so all I can do is a forced power-off, with resulting
possible disk data corruption problems. It would be really good to have
this functionality back.

[Bug 575204] Re: evolution crashed with SIGSEGV in g_slice_alloc()

2011-09-01 Thread Nick Jenkins
I don't think I've seen this on Natty (i.e. Evolution 2.32.2), but it
only occurred occasionally under earlier versions, thus making it hard
to be certain. Given that I haven't seen it after some months on this
version, I'd tentatively say that it's most probably fixed, and marking
it as expired is probably the way to go.

2011-08-31 Thread Nick Jenkins
I think this has been reported and fixed upstream in

As long as Ocelot/11.10 ships with Evolution 3.1.3 or higher, or Evolution

[Bug 777777] Re: Mark read / unread only works once in message window

2011-08-21 Thread Nick Jenkins
This has just been fixed upstream.
Mailing list discussion was here:
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/evolution-list/2011-August/msg00084.html
Fix is here:
http://git.gnome.org/browse/evolution/commit/?id=d33ed726f9562015b65c27360b02be0dfad7c11b
In general for Evolution bugs, I'd recommend logging it upstream at
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/ as that'll get it seen by its developers and fixed
faster.

[Bug 643910] Re: No effect when unchecking Compress weekends in month view

2010-11-29 Thread Nick Jenkins
So this appears to be an Ubuntu-specific issue, not appearing on other
distros. Surely that implies that Ubuntu are modifying something that
other people are not? For example, the patch from comment #6 ? In which
case there's nothing that upstream can do, and it really has to be
resolved at the root cause, i.e. with the Ubuntu-specific modification.

[Bug 643910] Re: No effect when unchecking Compress weekends in month view

2010-11-29 Thread Nick Jenkins
Oliver, I'm sorry, but I don't agree that this bug existed in 2.28-3. I
say that because of the following: I used Evo 2.28.3-0 on 10.04
LTS/Lucid, with the expanded weekends option (2 full days rather than 2
half days in the month view), and it seemed to work as expected for me.
I only noticed this problem 1 day after upgrading to Evo 2.30.3 on
10.10/Maverick. This also concurs with the original reporter, who wrote
says == Regression details == ; Discovered in version: evolution |
2.30.3-1ubuntu6; Last known good version: evolution | 2.28.3-0ubuntu10.
Therefore I think this problem was introduced by either something in
Ubuntu's version of Evo 2.30.3, or by some other change in Ubuntu
10.10/Maverick.

[Bug 297744] Re: No Sound with VIA 8237 (snd-via82xx) using pulseaudio

2010-07-16 Thread Nick Jenkins
I have an ASUS K8V-MX motherboard, which had never been used to play
sounds previously (was previously a headless development box). Recently
re-purposed it, and installed MythBuntu 10.04, and could not sound to
work at all, using the onboard VIA 8237, with the snd_via82xx module
(this was using ALSA though, not pulseaudio). Had tried everything in
software (mixers, checked modules, etc), and had begun to conclude it
was this bug. But after many hours finally saw this post: http://ubuntu-
virginia.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=919634page=2 , and added a
jumper to pins 5-6 and 9-10 on the motherboard's FP_AUDIO block. Then
after undoing some of the software changes I had made, sound just
worked. So, this hardware seems to be fully capable of sound in Linux,
just make sure that it's not a hardware problem - by either using the
front audio connectors, or have the 2 jumpers on the motherboard's
FP_AUDIO block if you want to use the rear connectors.

[Bug 597914] [NEW] [MICRO-STAR INTERNATIONAL CO., LTD MS-7528] suspend/resume failure [non-free: nvidia]

2010-06-23 Thread Nick Jenkins
Public bug reported:

Was resuming desktop PC in the morning after suspending the previous
night. First time I have tried this. On pressing the power-on button on
the case, the keyboard, mouse, and monitor did not respond (USB mouse
keyboard had no power [e.g. no light on the mouse's sensor], and the
monitor had no signal). Had to hold down the power button to force the
computer to turn off, and then boot normal. All of the suspended state
/open-apps/etc were lost.

This was Ubuntu 9.10, so I will try upgrading this system to the latest
10.04 in a few weeks, and will retry suspend/resume with that release
see if still happens, and will add a comment with the results.

[Bug 149076] Re: I can't write a cd

2010-03-18 Thread Nick Jenkins
At least in some cases, I suspect the errors might reflect an actual hardware
problem (e.g. comment 19 from cosmix had a similar error to the one I
encountered). I had a samsung SH-S223 SATA DVD writer (showed up as TSSTcorp
CDDVDW SH-S223F SB00 in wodim), and it could read all media fine, but it
repeatably gave an error when burning CDs, such as the one below:
--

cmd finished after 0.085s timeout 200s
/usr/bin/wodim: A write error occured.
--
I had initially assumed it was related to this bug, but decided to try buying a
new DVD drive. Bought the Pioneer DVR-218L SATA DVD writer (as this one
apparently did fairly well in a dust test). When replacing the drive, there was
quite a lot of dust in the case (removed with compressed air). A CD burn worked
straight away no problems with the replacement drive (and all the same Ubuntu
9.10 software). So it seems as is the old drive might have had some dust inside
the drive, causing this error. Replacing the drive fixed it. For laptops,
obviously it's harder more expensive to replace the drive, but for a desktop
system replacing the drive doesn't cost too much and may solve the problem for
some of you. For the remaining software issues, this bug seems to contain a
number of different errors, which may or may not be related. E.g. Perhaps there
should be separate bugs for each sense code error?

[Bug 467326] Re: at-spi-registryd assert failure: ERROR:orbit-object.c:149:do_unref: assertion failed: (robj-refs ORBIT_REFCOUNT_MAX robj-refs 0)

2009-11-02 Thread Nick Jenkins
I'm getting this right after upgrading from 9.04 to 9.10, and then
rebooting. Was not trying to play any media files (I think), so not sure
of the cause.

[Bug 364127] Re: Hotkeys for changing volume broken with jaunty (on Thinkpad R60)

2009-04-20 Thread Nick Jenkins
I am the reporter of the bug 359478 duplicate. I observe the same
behavior as described above, on my ThinkPad T40 running the Jaunty pre-
release.

The visual feedback is extremely useful. I do consider the Jaunty
behavior a regression, because the visual feedback used to work great in
previous versions (e.g. 8.04 and 8.10), and now it does not appear at
all.

IF the choice is to have visual feedback and have the two volume control
systems linked and have double stepping, OR to have no double-stepping
and no linkage, THEN the old behavior, with the double-stepping, was far
superior, in my opinion. From my perspective, double-stepping was
definitely the lesser of two evils.

[Bug 359478] Re: volume keys and mute key don't work in Thinkpad T40 - Jaunty regression

2009-04-17 Thread Nick Jenkins
I have applied some further updates 9.04 since logging this, and what I
observe now is that pressing the mute and volume keys does now mute and
change the volume; However, still I don't get a popup notification of
the changed volume, and if I click the volume panel applet, then it is
still set to the same volume despite any changes that I make by pressing
the buttons.

In 8.10 and 8.04, it used to show a notification on the screen when the
sound volume was changed with these keys or when the sound was muted.
Also the volume applet would reflect changes in volume made with these
hotkeys. So whilst the actual volume is changed now in 9.04 with these
keys, the bit the links it to the software, or gives visual software
feedback from these keys, appears to have regressed from previous
versions on the T40 Thinkpad.

I am testing out the pre-release of Ubuntu 9.04, but unfortunately it
only seems to have GDM version 2.20.10-0ubuntu2. Is there a chance that
we could please update to GDM 2.22 or higher? This is because 2.22 is
the version that has the upstream fix described above.

[Bug 306735] Re: Automatically clone video output when plugging a VGA cable into a laptop. An It Just Works presentation mode.

2009-03-20 Thread Nick Jenkins
Thank you! The TMM overview document was very interesting and highly relevant
to this discussion:
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/platform/mobilepc/tmm.mspx
I had never heard of TMM, and have never used Vista, but they have basically
captured exactly what I was trying to express in the hypothetical use cases -
they even use the phrase it just works! :-)

To summarise: they say it works fine with DVI and that for DVI that it
works without polling using interruptible HPD. For VGA, they say there
are known problems with autodetection, but that they're using periodic
DCC polling using the I2C bus, and that it only works for analog
displays with EDID support, and that they use non-destructive polling
unless requested to detect something by the user, and that non-
destructive polling does not cause any visual artefacts or flashing, and
that the specific implementation for polling is up to the hardware
vendor (maybe it's part of the Windows driver supplied by the hardware
vendor?). For VGA polling, it happens once per second or less. There is
no polling of TV outputs, and TV-out is not really covered very much,
and is doesn't sound like it gets any of the benefits of auto-detection.
Hardware must work with TMM in order to get the top level of Vista
certification.

Bottom line: It is possible to do this, especially for hardware that
already works with this TMM thing. However there would almost certainly
be some older or cheaper display adapters that do not work (if there
wasn't, Microsoft would have no need for a certification requirement),
so there would have to be a white-list of known supported cards, or in X
the driver would have to say if the hardware was capable of this. And
frankly, that's fine - if the hardware can't do it in a non-obtrusive
way, then the hardware can't do it, and that's just the way it is. But,
it is definitely do-able, for at least some hardware, and TMM serves as
a proof-by-existence of this.

[Bug 306735] [NEW] Automatically clone video output when plugging a VGA cable into a laptop. An It Just Works presentation mode.

2008-12-09 Thread Nick Jenkins
Public bug reported:

Summary:
This is a feature request, requesting that when a VGA cable is plugged into a
laptop, that it automatically produces a clone of the laptop screen on the
external monitor when the cable is plugged in, without having to do anything /
detect anything / change any settings / run any commands, besides physically
plugging in the cable.

Background:
I attended an Open Source conference recently (OSDC2008au), and one repeated
problem for people giving presentations or lighting-talks on their Linux
(generally Ubuntu, typically release 8.10) laptops, was when connecting their
laptop to the VGA projector, that the external display required some action to
get working. This was usually either through the menus (System - Preferences
- Screen resolution), or mucking about on the command line (xrandr
--ridiculously --long --list --of --obtuse --command-line --arguments), or
they had to reboot (and have the projector connected when rebooting). It was,
frankly, kind of embarrassing. The worst were the lighting talks - you've only
got 3 or 4 minutes from when you step up to the podium, and only about 65% of
people were able to get their laptops to work in that time, the rest just had
to wing it after giving up, and talk but not show their presentation. This is
not a satisfactory situation, and it reflects poorly on Ubuntu specifically and
on Linux in general, in a very public and humiliating way.

Disclaimers:
* I don't know if there's some way to automatically detect when a VGA cable is
plugged in. Obviously this is required. (e.g. on my laptop xrandr shows
different outputs when the cable is plugged in, and when it's not, but I don't
know if there's an event or something that gets generated when this situation
changes - hopefully there is, or one could be added).
* The Ubuntu 8.10 feature list / release notes included this line: X.Org 7.4
brings in hot-plug support for multi-monitor setup - plug-in the external
monitor and resolution etc are automatically detected and set. I had (probably
mistakenly) assumed that this would mean that in Ubuntu 8.10 I would be able to
plug in a VGA cable after booting, and that it would just work, but I can
only report that on my laptop (a Thinkpad T40, with ATI Mobility Radeon 7500
chipset) that it does not work. Also running xrandr --output LVDS --auto
--output VGA --auto --same-as LVDS or xrandr --output LVDS --mode 1024x768
--output VGA --mode 1024x768 does not do anything either. Also doing things in
System - Preferences - Screen resolution does not work either. Pressing Fn-F7
doesn't seem to do anything either. The only thing that I have found that works
is to reboot, with the VGA cable plugged in, and that's the only way I have
found to get output on the external monitor to work (from memory, I think I can
then unplug it and then plug it back in and it will still work, as long as I
have not rebooted).
* I don't know if this should be logged upstream somewhere, or if this is a
meta bug (number of smaller updates required to achieve a larger objective), or
is a bug in specific driver (and everyone else already has this feature - but
from observing the conference, I highly doubt it). So I don't know where to log
this, but the fact remains that the current situation sucks, so it needs to be
logged somewhere, and hopefully it can be improved. If this is in the wrong
place, then I apologize, and please direct me to where it should be located,
and I'll log it there instead.

Dual desktop setups:
There should be some way to configure this for people that want dual desktop
set-ups (i.e. different outputs on laptop screen the VGA out), but IMHO 95%
of the time a VGA cable is plugged into a laptop, it's because a person wants a
clone of the desktop, to give a presentation / show somebody something / use a
larger monitor. Furthermore, if you want a dual screen setup, then you are
typically not under the same time-pressure to get it working (i.e. there is not
a room of people sitting there waiting for you), so it's usually less of a
problem if it takes longer to configure a dual desktop. But automatically
cloning the laptop screen onto the VGA out, as soon as the cable is plugged in,
is going to the correct default action around 95% of the time.

From the instructions on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed , I
think you can maybe replace this last line

With this command, so as to just install these updates, without the confusing

 sudo aptitude install -t hardy-proposed gvfs-fuse gvfs-backends gvfs
(I'm no expert though, but that's what I did, and rebooted, and it seems to be
working okay - no crashes so far).

[Bug 283622] [NEW] Right-click to search for files in Nautilus?

2008-10-15 Thread Nick Jenkins
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

In Gnome's Nautilus, is it possible to right-click on a folder and get a
Search... menu? There seems to be Places - Search for Files...,
which does allow searching for files, but there does not seem to be
right-click option, integrating into Nautilus this search, but
restricted to within the selected folder. From Googling, there is a
package called nautilus-search-tool ( http://www.getdeb.net/app
/nautilus-search-tool ), which _seems_ to add this, but it's not
available in Ubuntu's repository, and may even be deprecated because
it's so old. Is there some way to do this, or something else that needs
to be installed? If not, can it maybe be added please?

[Bug 264287] Re: zoom keys dont work in my microsoft natural keyboard 4000

2008-09-25 Thread Nick Jenkins
I am running Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS, and can confirm that I am having the
exact same problem with the exact same keyboard (zoom key does not work
on the Microsoft Natural Ergonmoic 4000 Keyboard). All the other
special keys seem to work okay.

If it helps to explain what this key is, the zoom key is marked as item
number 1 on this image of they keyboard:
http://i.testfreaks.com/images/products/600x400/159/microsoft-natural-
ergonomic-keyboard-4000.205983.jpg

Also if I run sudo showkey -t 2 to see the keycodes, the result is as follows:
# the keycode for the up key is:
0x00 0x83 0xa2
# (The above keycode will be repeated whilst the zoom key is held in the up
position.)
# Followed by this on release:
0x80 0x83 0xa2
# They keycode for the down key is:
0x00 0x83 0xa3
# (The above keycode will be repeated whilst the zoom key is held in the down
position.)
# Followed by this on release:
0x80 0x83 0xa3

Note also that on running xev that I don't get any events when I press
or release the zoom key in either the up or down positions, so based on
comment #2, this would indicate a problem with the kernel.

[Bug 267667] Re: Evolution crashes do not generate a log in /var/crash, even with apport installed

2008-09-08 Thread Nick Jenkins
No, sorry, I had not enabled it. I did read the online docs at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Apport page, but did not see anything about
having to enable it, or how to enable it. I have added a new section now
describing how to do this, under the How to enable apport section.
Thank you very much for pointing me in the right direction, and this bug
report can be closed.

[Bug 264553] Re: add a way to prefill username field with last username used.

2008-09-04 Thread Nick Jenkins
Done! Logged upstream as: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=550822
My apologies for logging it in the wrong place - I didn't mean to suggest that
this was a distribution-specific thing - it's not - more something that would
be nice to have in gnome generally.

[Bug 264550] [NEW] Add ability to Kmail to delete mail folders in folder view by pressing the delete key + delete multiple folders at once.

2008-09-03 Thread Nick Jenkins
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kmail

Under local folders in Kmail, if I create a test folder by right-
clicking on Local folders and going New folder, I would then like to
be able to delete that folder by highlighting it, and pressing the
Delete key. Instead this does nothing, and I have to right-click and
go Delete folder. This is okay for one folder, but when you have to
delete 10 folders this way, it gets more annoying because you cannot
delete more than one folder at once using the right-click method. You
can however select 10 folders at once.

So effectively, two requests:
1) Delete key on a folder == right-click and choose delete folder.
2) Ability to delete multiple folders at once.

 version info

Release: Ubuntu 8.04.1, AMD64.
apt-cache policy kmail shows: Installed: 4:3.5.9-0ubuntu3

[Bug 264553] [NEW] To login screen, add a way to prefill username field with last username used.

2008-09-03 Thread Nick Jenkins
Public bug reported:

Looking for a way to have the Ubuntu login screen remember the last
logged in username, so that I just have to press enter to reuse the last
login name, and then it goes straight to the password prompt.

Under system-administration-login window, I currently have it set to
show the list of users, so I can click on my full name. Ideally though,
I would like the username to be prefilled, and just have to press enter,
and then type my password, without using the mouse.

I.e. I am fine with my username being disclosed to anyone who walks up
to the login screen, but I still want to have to authenticate myself
with a password. I could not see a way to do this, and some Google
searches (e.g. Ubuntu login screen remember username) did not turn up
anything that looked applicable, other than this similar request:
http://www.daniweb.com/forums/thread47878.html

 version info

Release: Ubuntu 8.04.1, AMD64.

[Bug 84965] Re: Support for Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000

2008-09-03 Thread Nick Jenkins
In Ubuntu 8.04.1 almost all of the keys are working, apart from the zoom
key / slider. Is there some way to get the zoom key to behave like the
scroll wheel on a mouse (e.g. scoll up and scroll down a web page when
zoom slider is slid up or slid down?). The zoom key is marked with a red
1 in this diagram: http://i.testfreaks.com/images/products/600x400/159
/microsoft-natural-ergonomic-keyboard-4000.205983.jpg

P.s. To get the back / forward keyboard keys working in Firefox, when
using the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic 4000 Keyboard, go System -
Preferences - Keyboard - Layout - click the model button - Choose
Microsoft - set model to Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro USB - click
close.

[Bug 263500] [NEW] Create Folder in Nautilus is counterintuitive - does not apply to selected folder

2008-08-31 Thread Nick Jenkins
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

What I did: In Nautilus, I open a Windows share, with the left-hand
places sidepane open. I have View as List selected. I drill down 4
or more folders deep until finding some directory, several levels deep,
in which I want to create a new folder for my files. I click on that
directory on the right hand part of the window, to make it active, and
it is highlighted in an orange colour to indicate that is it active. I
then go File - Create Folder.

What happens: This creates a new folder in the top level directory. So
it ignores all the drilling down, ignores the active directory, and
creates a folder at the top-level.

What I expect to happen: Create folder should be relative to what is
active. If a folder is active, then Create Folder should create a new
folder inside that active folder. If a file is active, then create
folder should create a folder inside the current folder. Create Folder
should not create a folder at the top level, and should not ignore what
the user has selected.

Related information: The same thing happens when pressing Ctrl-Shift-N,
which is the keyboard shortcut to create a new folder.

Possibly related information: The what I expect to happen behaviour is
what Windows Explorer does, and is what I am familiar with, but it is
also I think the most logical thing to do, and what most users would
expect to happen.

[Bug 262073] [NEW] Scroll back and forward through document pages with back and forward keys

2008-08-27 Thread Nick Jenkins
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

[Bug 83715] Re: local loopback interface isn't brought up on boot

2008-04-22 Thread Nick Jenkins
Running 8.04 RC Hardy Heron, experiencing a similar problem. Upgraded a few
days ago from 7.10, and in 7.10 I could not print reliably in evince (ended up
assuming it was a buggy app and installing acroread instead), and I would get a
~3 minute delay on login. The same annoying ~3 minute delay persisted in 8.04
RC, and furthermore I would often get a gnome session error on login. By good
luck I came across this bug (after many unsuccessful attempts to google for
similar problem reports). From the comments here, I then tried pinging
localhost, and got no answer, and ifconfig showed no loopback interface. The
solution was very simple - just add these 3 lines to /etc/network/interfaces :
# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

... and I rebooted and now logging in is fast and quick. Yay! I have no
idea where the loopback interface lines went to from the interfaces
file. Maybe some bit of software deleted it? Maybe I deleted it? Seems a
bit unlikely to me though, as I have no recollection of doing that.
